A month ago, my friend and I were talking about how amazing Avalugg was-- +4 Flare Blitz Talonflame doesn't even OHKO it if it's Jolly. From various teams, I'd used ice types Abomasnow, Mamoswine, and Weavile, and loved their power.
So I decided to try out a Monotype in OU.
Without further ado, the formation.
There's nothing else I have to say about it: Avalugg. The pinnacle of defense, and Avalanche decimates the highly common Dragon Types. Who are also usually Physical.
I didn't really need Mega Abomasnow, but I need to guard my team against Sun. And besides, what other Mega-Ice types are there?
After that, I simply got two of the best Ice-Type attackers I could think of. Cloyster is a great late-game sweeper. However, I often didn't get the chance to set up, even with Focus Sash, due to priority, which made a problem I would later fix. Mamoswine's offensive typing is just unparalleled, despite being a bit sluggish.
Of course, now I needed a lead. Froslass isn't seen much, so Destiny Bond is a nice, reliable gimmick, especially due to the large ammount of Mega Charizards opening in.
With that, all I had to do is add Weavile. The hax from King's Rock beatup saves me constantly, and should an Aerodactyl murder Froslass, I can simply Ice Punch it into oblivion. However, I had some problems due to Cloyster's fear of priority, so I brought in my new favourite...
Praise Kyurem B. Seriously, with a choice band and a decent movepool, Kyurem-B is the deadliest member of my team-- If anyone can't take it, Kyurem-B's nice bulk and amazing attack can.
Let's start!
AAAAAVAAAAAA (Avalugg) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Ice Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Recover
- Rapid Spin
- Roar
- Avalanche
The moveset here used to be recover, rapid spin, hail, and avalanche. However, after facing stat boosters, I decided to make the change. Now; let's run some calculations:
252+ Atk Choice Band Garchomp Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 150-177 (38 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Avalugg can OHKO Garchomp.
4 SpA Salamence Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Avalugg: 316-374 (80.2 - 94.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Avalugg can also OHKO Salamence, as long as Avalugg has high HP, Avalugg will survive. Even if it's mixed.
252 Atk Life Orb Talonflame Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 174-205 (44.1 - 52%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Avalugg can survive Talonflame, and Avalugg can 2HKO it.
There's a few physical attackers that can knock out Avalugg-- Scizor's a huge problem, as are the Mega Charizards is Weavile and Froslass are out. But Avalugg is highly reliable.
Snow Jesus (Abomasnow) (F) @ Abomasite
Trait: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Wood Hammer
I won't lie. Although Abomasnow was one of my favourite pokemon last gen, Mega Abomasnow lets me down a lot. If only Hail had the +25% SpD boost. But no. Really, although I certainly enjoy the hail and the substituted focus punches, Abomasnow just isn't that good. However, I can't find a better replacement for her, and my team enjoys the slight added damage. If only weather hadn't been nerfed.
ATM (Mamoswine) (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Snow Cloak
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Superpower
- Stone Edge
Mamoswine tends to keep types that my team can't handle away. Although I know that Shell Smash Cloyster would be altogether better, I really can't ignore the fact that priority beats it so badly, especially on a team so weak to Bullet Punch, Mach Punch, and Vaccum Wave; it's just too risky. Apart for that, Mamoswine does pretty well.
Calculations:
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 179-213 (55.2 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
I can also use Stone Edge if I think it might be Adamant, so that saves me some trouble. Also, Dragonite is the least common of the dragons. Continuing...
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 629-743 (155.6 - 183.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Tyranitar is no problem, unless it's scarfed.
Nor are Salamence, Garchomp, Noivern, or Goodra. I have a guaranteed OHKO-2HKO against all of them.
ICCCCCCEEE (Froslass) (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Destiny Bond
- Spikes
- Shadow Ball
- Taunt
Although easily taken by more experienced players, for anyone new to the game or who just hasn't seen Froslass before, Froslass is an abomination. Yeah, she's frail and not as fast as Aerodactyl. However, if I do happen to face Aerodactyl, I can take it out before getting in too much trouble: If taunted, Shadow Ball will take enough out of it's health for Mamoswine or Weavile to OHKO it. All I need to remember when using her is:
When in doubt, Destiny Bond out.
Lord Claw (Weavile) (M) @ King's Rock
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Beat Up
- Low Kick
- Ice Punch
- Ice Shard
With Beat Up arguably boosted this Gen, I had to use it. Since most of my team is strong physically, Beat Up, even with a member down, deals nice damage. On top of that, flinch. Although it's not nearly as strong as Togekiss or Haxatchi, the speed makes it ridicule these two.
Unless, of course, they're scarfed, but that ruins the parahax part.
The other moves are merely for coverage and priority. Beat Up is the attack I always use.
Attack Jesus (Kyurem-B) @ Choice Band
Trait: Teravolt
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Outrage
- Fusion Bolt
- Zen Headbutt
- Stone Edge
I have no idea who said Kyurem-B has a horrible physical movepool, but they're wrong. Although I must admit that on a normal team Zen Headbutt isn't the best move in the world, when against a deadly fighting type (conkelderp), Zen Headbutt saves me.
Matchups against a major threats to my team:
252 Atk Choice Band Teravolt Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 200-236 (58.1 - 68.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Teravolt Kyurem-B Outrage vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 375-442 (90.5 - 106.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Teravolt Kyurem-B Stone Edge vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 1132-1336 (362.8 - 428.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Teravolt Kyurem-B Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Darmanitan: 646-760 (184 - 216.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Teravolt Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 200-236 (58.6 - 69.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Oh, fun fact: With choice band, Kyurem-B's attack stat is 255. Max that a pokemon can ever have as a base stat.
Overview again:
Thanks, and help would be appreciated!
