Welcome to Battling 101! If you're seeking a tutor for SS Monotype, you are in the right place. Please read all the rules carefully and fill out every part of the application.

THE RULES

  • You must be able to access Discord, or whatever your tutor wants as the primary form of communication.
  • You must be willing to use Pokemon Showdown! even if you are being tutored in a cartridge format such as Battle Spot or VGC.
  • You, the tutee, MUST have at least 35 posts before signing up for tutoring. If you do not reach that threshold, you WILL be skipped.
  • You must have battled competitively for a decent amount in at least ONE of the Smogon tiers or Battle Spot / VGC to sign up. Playing 10 or so matches on the PS! ladder is not substantial enough, ~70 or so is more reasonable. This experience does not need to be for the format you sign-up for; this is just to weed out people who have never played competitively that can improve themselves simply by using resources already available to them without needing a tutor to hold their hand.
  • You, the tutee, are responsible for setting up times with your tutor. Don't expect them to come to you. Take the initiative and post on their VM wall first. Additionally, please be patient if your tutor doesn't respond in the first 2-3 days.
  • Use the Tutee Talk forum to complain about your tutor (or praise them if they're doing a good job). These are no longer mandatory, but if your tutor is ridiculously inactive or is a complete jackass, COMPLAIN HERE.Nobody can see your tutee talk posts except for you and the Battling 101 Staff; everything is confidential.
  • Don't request tutors unless they have agreed to tutor you.
  • If your timezone and hours of availability do not match up with the correct thread, your post will be skipped. Please PM a B101 mod if you are unsure about which thread to post in.
  • You may only post in ONE of the signup threads. Delete your post if you change your mind about signing up for something.
Here is the signup template, and an example sign-up post.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitively in early XY and spammed Baton Pass on the ladder. I was pretty skilled I guess. I then got more involved with Smogon and started to play in various tournaments like UUPL and later on Snake and SPL. I could use a bit more practice in this tier though, so I'm looking to get help
Do you understand how the blacklist works?: Yes
Here is the Monotype Tutoring Discord for anyone interested in learning about the metagame! https://discord.com/invite/upaNs9u

The Blacklist (aka Battling 101 Detention)
You will be banned from signing up in the future if:

  • You show poor activity over a course of a month (banned for 6 months, infracted for 1 point)
  • You decide during the tutoring round that you do not wish to be tutored anymore, or you mistakenly sign up for a tier you thought was something else, and no longer wish to be tutored. This is most common when selecting Smogon Doubles / VGC, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING (banned for 6 months)
  • You show a lack of enthusiasm or you're consistently distracted by other things (banned for 3 months)
  • You fail to complete the tutor evaluation form that we will send out during the last week of the round(banned for 6 months, infracted for 1 point)
  • You are annoying to deal with. This will vary from tutor to tutor. Some tutors don't like it when you talk back, argue with them, whine about hax, whine about sucking at Pokemon, or any version of the 'woe is me' attitude. Tutors get pissed at different things, so if they complain to us that you are exhibiting poor behavior, expect to be on the blacklist.(banned for 3-6 months)
Repeated offense of any of the situations above can potentially mean a year ban. If you have been on the blacklist for three different instances, you will be EXPELLED from Battling 101 (perma-ban from signing up).

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitively in early XY and used a few gimmicks to earn a name. I was pretty bad overall. I then got more involved with Smogon and started to play in various tournaments like Seasonals and Ladder Tours which I got destroyed in frequently. My greatest feat in the tier was getting carried to 5th place in the last BLT. I have been doing decently well this generation and intend cultivate this potential. I look forward to expand my knowledge in the tier with the help of an esteemed tutor.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started competitive mons in XY, and got involved in Smogon tournaments in the latter stages of SM onwards. I participated in various tours such as Seasonals and Mono BLT, and assisted in building for a few team tours. However, I've not been able to push forward this gen with the new mons/meta as much as I would have liked in SwSh Monotype, so I would appreciate to be tutored by a more experienced player.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I began playing basic OU at the start of SM, and gradually started playing the tier seriously a couple months in. Around a year and a half ago, I started playing in draft leagues, and I've now competed in more than 25 seasons of draft, and know a decent bit about building. I started investing my time in monotype last summer, joining the Aroma league immediately and playing in a few tours from there. I faired decently in gen 7, but would really like to hit the next level in this generation, especially after I lost to peachy r1 in the monogens tournament and realized how much further I needed to go. My only notable feat so far was in the monotype opening team tour, where I hit semifinals with some friends from Aroma with an undefeated run of 6 wins. But beyond that, I really hope to train with someone experienced to reach new heights.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing monotype in SM in the ladder reaching the top in a few weeks, after a while I continued playing only in ladder then I did the maroon tutoring almost at the end of SM Monotype where I ended up playing the odd tour getting regular results.

I'm a pretty chill person, but my reputation prevents me from proving that. It is what it is, I like playing Pokemon a lot, just noticed that I fell off this Gen as opposed to last Gen. Hoping to get some of those skills back. Thanks in advance.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started in gen 7 AG, was pretty decent, learned the ropes, later moved to gen 7 ou. Currently play mostly Nat dex OU and VGC2020, but have dipped my feet into monotype on occasion (with uhm not good results). My general weakness is that I have limited meta knowledge and am generally not good at teambuilding.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): Been competitive since late Gen 6 (played since Gen 4?), decent enough tour results, but nothing noteworthy. Always been just above average, trying to get to that next level of competitiveness and start making better tour performances. My main focus here is the tour world of play. Proper prepping and more "higher level" plays/mindsets/etc to start gaining traction in the tour circuit.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): i started playing really casually during mid Gen 5, but I didn’t join Smogon or get into competitive until mid gen 7. I started out with old gens, especially RBY, and eventually came to play pretty much exclusively Monotype. I’ve done decently well in my first few real tournaments, and have been able to climb the ladder with a few types, but I want to branch out and learn the ropes of a few more types as well as get a better understanding of the metagame in general.

I have been playing competitive Pokemon for a bit over 3 years now with playing multiple metagames such as 1v1, LC, PU, ZU, old gens of 1v1, LC, Monotype and RBY OU. I have made it far last gen in mono with being a mono gen finalist and making Monotype Ribbon playoffs. I have also been in multiple team tours in the time I had here and mostly had good results. However, I have been having trouble with building this gen because of the dex cut and feel like im missing vital metagame knowledge to make me excel this gen.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences):
I've been playing competitive pokemon for just over 2 years now. Started playing USUM Battle Spot Singles from nothing but ingame experience (im talking beating elite 4 lol here not cart laddering), over that 2 years accomplished a lot and made a name for myself in the scene and even became a tutor for the tier and writing a lot of the resources and analyses that are around today. Placed high in tours, I'm currently in one that I'm in the final 6 see if we can win that, managed in BSPL to finals, probably the most active player atm in the BSS scene. Play a few other tiers that I've picked up in the meanwhile, started with RBY OU which Im pretty good at now (I think with a decent amount of practice, I could probably get to SPL level...tho rip to that), played DPP, ADV, USUM OU, some of the lower tiers, done randbats runs and have had brief forays into the monotype ladder too.

My monotype experience actually starts from 3v3, I originally started using Mono-Steel to style on my friends in stupid games and then kinda realised that monotype was pretty cool. I'd continue using Monotype teams on ladder, eventually getting 1550 with a mono-poison team (https://pokepast.es/3b36fa36af8c37e6) which was top 100 at the time against meta teams. I enjoyed the idea of having restrictions self imposed which allowed you to explore pokemon in different unique ways and find new niches that would otherwise not really be explored. By having limited tools, I think it really means your creativity game needs to be upped. I played a bit of actual monotype in gen 7 and did alright with Mono Normal though it was never a priority at the time since I was busy managing a BSPL team but haven't really played too much in SWSH other than briefly taking the Mono Water team from the sample teams list and laddering and playing a few people in the monotype room with it.

The main thing that actually encouraged me to sign up and learn monotype was actually the activity and passion of the scene. I want to be involved in something like that.

I started playing competitive Pokemon 2 years ago and started off playing tiers in gen 7 such as OU, UU, AG (one of my best tiers back then) and Monotype. As the years went on I have been playing a bit of some gen 8 OU but it hasn't been very appealing to me, while Monotype seemed like the perfect metagame to try. I joined Smogon and joined a Monotype tour, though I havent made it very far and can only reach to 1300s on gen 8 Monotype ladder, so I need some more experience from somebody to help me out with Monotype.

I started in 2014 X/Y, but never climbed above 1.2k until recently in OU. I reached 1.6k last night - the highest I've ever been! I'm super interested in Monotype, but have little experience regarding it other than "for-fun" mono-teams in natdex.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started competitive Pokemon in late gen6, and once I joined mono I've been focusing on building creatively. I peaked last gen which was my goal and accomplishment, but I want to improve my skills in teambuilding and battling more. In tournaments like BLT or SmogTours, it's always this one thing that screws me up or just not battling correctly.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing Pokémon in gen 7, though I was generally a more casual player that drifted more towards the Draft League scene. I was then introduced to smogon by some friends and have been just been playing casually for about 2 years, never seeing this more than a little hobby to pass time and have fun. I have been taking it more serious as of late (more towards the end of gen 7) and have seen pretty good results in terms of growth throw pokemon. I also fell in love with monotype after getting a peak of around 1600something using mono ghost back in gen 7.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I really started playing competitively back in gen 6 when I mained LC and I've just recently participated in 1v1 PL. I've always had an interest monotype as I think it's a very fun tier with a lot of diversity. My main issue this gen is building so if I get tutored, I feel my play in this tier will rise exponentially. (I don't post a lot on the forums but I assure you I'm very active rn).
