Are Iv's Really That Important?

Hmm, when I breed, I personally keep all of them (with the ones of natures that I like). I'd check the IVs AFTER getting about a box full. Only because I find that it's much faster to check like that versus doing one at a time.

But, IVs definitely make a difference in battles. Someone who knows NOTHING about IVs versus Someone who knows stuff about IVs, and actually spends time to get good ones.
The person who knows stuff about IVs and actually spends time to get good ones will generally win; dedication leads to victory.

This is, unless the person who knows NOTHING about IVs has some great great unbeatable strategy (in which case, if they're not willing to try and get nice IVs, they're probably lazy and slapped 6 standards with no strategy together anyways)

The way I see it is if you have access to Emerald then you should always get pokemon with at least two flawless stats. X-acts breeding guide gives exact details on doing that and it doesn't take very long (in my opinion). Depending on the Pokemon in question, the flawless IVs need to be in certain stats. For instance, I'm breeding a Gengar with Hyponsis/Shadow Ball/Thunderbolt/Focus Blast and its holding a Black Sludge. Speed will be of importance since I won't be using a Choice Scarf or a move like agility. In this instance I'm going to want 31 in Speed and Sp. Attack. Having perfect IVs is relative to what pokemon you are creating, but if you have the right materials you should probably take the time and do some of it right.

You usually want 31 in Speed to outspeed all the lazier people in your speed class. The rest is really just enough to OHKO or 2HKO major threats that you plan to be using your Pokemon for. I mean, 31 vs 25. Both OHKO the enemies you're using your Pokemon for. What's the point of trying for higher?

If you plan on playing random battles online when Battle Revolution comes out, I will say that IV breeding won't be that important because I'm estimating that 95% of Pokemon players don't know what IV's are or don't care enough to waste the time. If you are entering tournaments, it's a must.

The cases where a perfect IV is most important is when it's absolutely needed to perform. E.G., base 100 pokemon, who have to compete in speed with all other base 100s, of which there are MANY (Salamence, Staraptor, Raichu, Ninetales, Celebi/Jirachi/Shaymin/Mew/Manaphy, etc.) need to be at absolute max speed in most cases. Then you have cases in which it's vital to have max stats in order to 1HKO/2HKO (any special attacker with focus punch vs. blissey, for instance), or to survive more than 1 or 2 hits from a common counter. And there's the good 'ol 404 HP Sub (Seismic Toss seems to be going out of style though). Usually though, most of these can be fixed with EVs. The only one that can't is speed.

All these special cases aside, personally I'd settle for decent scores in the needed stats (25+) and average or better (15+) in the ones that aren't vital but still useful (hp/def/sp.def on a sweeper). Obviously only the used attacking stat needs to be good, the other doesn't matter (0+). A primarily defensive pokemon doesn't need to worry too much about it's offense, so if it has good defenses and say, 20 Atk/SpA, that should be fine.

To sum it up, in general the only stat that will actually make a life or death difference is speed

I just go til I get something that I like. For instance, I bred about 10 eevees til and picked the one with the best IV's and nature. Not too tedius and I got a decent eevee out of it.

Only one IV SERIOUSLY matters: Speed.

Speed determines who goes first. On a sweeper, if you're not 31 speed, you're trash.

HP is also sometime important so you can optimizes Leftovers in multiples of 16...

I find it's actually pretty easy to get max ivs in two stats, so that's what I go for. I don't try for more then two since it's too complicated and time consuming. Two max ivs is usually all that I need anyway.
