I meant rock/ground attacking types, i use cradilly as a wall and wanted to know if EQ would be a good alternative to SR

That would depend if you want to cover more types with your Cradily and be able to wall them too or get some extra damage on switchins with Stealth Rock so you can perhaps KO with your other pokes.

EDIT: Oh and this might sound stupid but how do you bold your words when typing?

Put [b ] and [/b ] around your words. Of course w/o the spaces.

If played well, probably. Note that in OU, Dragonite outclasses Altaria, so you may want to try that? iirc Cipher did utilize Dragonite. You last slot should be devoted to something that can stop Heracross and Tyranitar from ripping apart. I don't know much about OU, so. =/

So what's the deal with EV training? I thought you had to get so many EV points per level up but now it sounds like you just stockpile points until they're maxed out in every stat, or at least the stats you wish. Or... is there a set number of TOTAL EV points they can have? I have this level 43 Drapion that I just leveled up by fighting anything like usual, never grinding EV; do I just go back and grind on ATK and SPD or have I wasted the points and need to start all over? In case of the latter, why should I care that much?

If you ever wanted to take EVs away, just use the berries. They are easy to
identify for the same reason as above. They will take away 10 EV points, or if
you have more than 100, they will lower them to 100. If you have no idea about
the EV's of a pokemon, 11 berries will always lower them back down to zero. I
would just save first, so you aren't wasting berries.

I don't quite understand what this is saying. If a Pokemon has 252 EP points in a stat, will the berries not drop the stat down to 0? Shouldn't it take 26 of each berry to lower a stat until it can't drop anymore? I'm just a bit confused, and I really thought I had the "correct" grasp on EV training...

Well to answer your question it depends who you fought with your Drapion and if you have fought the maximum pokemon to gain the max. number of EVs for your pokemon then yes you would have to start over with ev training. You should care because EV training is what wins a lot of battles for you.

EDIT: To answer jbozz1217's question it takes I think 10 of each berry max. to drop that stats evs by 100, only use these berries if you don't know what evs your pokemon has obtained by leveling up through the main story in d/p.

So... there's a type of berry that you can feed to your pokemon to reduce their EV points by 10 at a time? I have no idea how many EVs my Drapion has. What is the name of this berry? How many EV points can one pokemon have at max? Do they have that many open slots for EVERY stat or is it a set number shared amongst all the stats? Let's pretend the number of EV slots is 500 and I want ATK and SPD on my drapion, so I give her 260 ATK, 230 SP, and 10 in something else. Is that how it works? So I just grind on a species that gives X points, counting how many I knock out, and then when I'm done I go power level them at the Elite 4 or something?

Also, do you get EVs using the Exp. Share or does the pokemon you're training have to land the killing blow?

You're very close. What it is saying is, if you have more than 100 EVs in a stat, then using one EV reduction berry will drop it down to 100. So you could have anywhere from 101 to 255 in the stat, but you'll still end up with 100. Once you have 100 or less EVs in the stat, then each the berry will subtract 10 EVs per used. So to answer your question, it takes 11 berries maximum like the guide said (1 for the drop to 100, 10 for getting down to 0 from there), not 26.

Hopefully that clarified it for you.

Here's one: What the heck is a metagame and why is this forum so complicated? Not to be rude but I came here looking for help in learning how to make a balanced team to effectively fight random strangers anywhere over Wi-Fi for the fun of it. Now I find you have this "metagame," whatever that means, with tiers and special rules and a complicated RMT thread where posting what you have and saying "Well I picked these because I like them but I could use some help to figure out if I'm doing it right." isn't good enough.

I don't want to get you wrong but it's starting to look like some elitist forum for hXc players only and it doesn't feel very welcoming or friendly at all. What am I missing here?

If you just wanna stroll into competitive battling, its not for you. for amny peopel it takes about a month to learn about competitive battling and another month to start winnign some battles. most of the pros have been battlign for a VERY long time.

I understand what it is saying, but I just wanted a different interpretation because to me this does not make sense at all.

Was this also true in 3rd Generation? I know for a fact that I have used numbers of berries in the 20's in order to reduce a Pokemon's stats, even when that Pokemon "adores" me. Eventually it says "it would have no effect", but I have used it MUCH more than 11 times before it stops saying "___ was lowered" or whatever.

OK, fair enough. How do I battle other human beings for fun?

Pokeymanz is serious business.

Just read some guides. I got into competetive battling years ago at the end of G/S/C, I was about 14 IIRC. I picked it up pretty quickly and the rules rolled over.

The metagame is the game of prediction within a game. An example is in chess, theres that 3 combo move to win instantly. However, when people used this, others found out, and changed the way they played to "counter" that threat and stop it from destroying them. Same applies to the game-breaking Swampert back in R/S/E/FR/LG and so people stuck Hidden Power grass on everything to "counter it".

Hope that makes sense. Its loads of fun, or at least, the metagame is what I find fun about it. I dont think this forum is elitest, just needs more guides for the unitiated.

Cheers.

Your best bet is to play one of the non-balanced tiers, ubers and BL. With the emphasis on countering strategies, instead of individual Pokemon and sets, there is far more variety in team building and strategy. Of course, ubers has a small pool of viable Pokemon to choose from, as well as a ladder, making even it pretty competitive. However, neither experience the extreme rigidity of OU and UU.

*shott'd for shamefully and intentionally promoting BL play*

Thank you for the reasonable responses. I don't really are about tiers though. Most of the pokemon I like are "underused," some "border line," and others "overused." I think I'll just go to Marriland and see what I can find there, they might be more my level.

I do really need some help understanding EVs though. What's up with that? And how the heck am I supposed to figure out the IVs and whether or not I'll get the Hidden Power type I want?

They have calculators for the IVs and the Hidden Power type and Smogon has a thread on this about finding out what type your hidden power is based on the IVs, I just don't remember the link:(
