Setup Sweeper
Axew @ Eviolite
Ability: Mold Breaker
Level: 5
EVs: 220 Atk / 36 Def / 116 SpD / 136 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- First Impression / Aqua Tail
- Breaking Swipe
- Superpower
Dragon Dance gives Axew the power to properly break through walls and revenge killers. After a Dragon Dance or two, Axew is a fast physical sweeper. First Impression is a great move, dealing massive damage to a good chunk of the metagame, unfortunately, it alone cannot score an OHKO on it's own. Aqua Tail is a useful move in which it can check opposing ground and fire types, such as Hippopotas, Drilbur, and Scorbunny. Breaking Swipe is Axew's most reliable STAB move, lowering the enemy's Attack, which can help Axew survive hits it normally wouldn't, such as avoiding a 2HKO from Vullaby and Galarian Farfetch'd's Brave Bird. Superpower is Axew's strongest move, being able to 2HKO Cufant, Ferroseed, and Galarian Farfetch'd after Stealth Rock, even after the Attack drop.
Axew best fits in on teams looking for a pokemon looking to shut down the opposition. Diglett is an exceptional partner for Axew because its ability Arena Trap allows it to trap Steel-types such as Cufant and OHKO them with Earthquake. Hazard support is good for Axew because they wear the enemy down and aid Axew in allowing it to switch in. Examples include Drilbur and Ferroseed. Drilbur helps take down opposing Steel-types, while Ferroseed is a premier hazard setter and offers grass moves for Axew, while both of them can help take down enemy ice-types that would threaten Axew. Drilbur in particular can also take down enemy fairy-types. In exchange, Axew can threaten the fire-types that would normally check both of them with Aqua Tail. Knock Off support is also useful from the likes of Corphish and Vullaby, which can be useful in removing Cottonee's Eviolite, and other items that would typically give Axew trouble.
