[Overview]
  • High Attack
  • Bad Defenses
  • bad Movepool
  • Access to DD makes it a decent sweeper
  • largely outclassed by axew
[SET]
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage / Dragon Claw
move 3: Fire Fang
move 4: Rock Slide
item: Life Orb
nature: Jolly
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD / 196 Spe
ivs: 0 HP

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Basic Dragon Dance sweeping set.
  • DD up and tear apart teams that have been worn out
  • Outrage is its most powerful STAB
  • Dragon Claw should be used if you're using Sheer Force
  • Fire Fang takes down Steel-types that wall Bagon such as Ferroseed and Magnamite
  • Rock Slide provides coverage against Flying- and Fire-types.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Jolly to make Bagon as fast as possible.
  • EVs maximize speed and attack
  • Outrage+DragonDance+Sheer Force is illegal.
  • Life Orb gives a nice power boost
  • Teammates: Stealth Rock / Spikes support from Dwebble, Ferroseed etc
  • SubPass Mienfoo can help Bagon while it attempts to setup Dragon Dances and can block status
  • 0 ivs in hp so that bagon takes only 1 damage from life orb
  • Bronzor can take hits, provide paralysis support, and set up stealth rock
  • Since Ice- and Dragon-type pokemon threaten Bagon, Bronzor is helpful.
  • Cleric support from Chinchou and Missy can be useful if bagon gets burned / paralysed
[Other Options]
  • Choice Scarf can be used because Bagon's attack isn't too bad.
  • Brick Break
  • Zen Headbutt
  • Eviolite
  • Hone Claws + Dragon Rush
[Checks and Counters]
  • Snover can outspeed Bagon and OHKO it with Blizzard.
  • Faster Dragon-types such as Axew can finish off Axew with a STAB Dragon-type move.
  • Paralysis hurts Bagon a lot as it stops it from sweeping
  • Burn too
  • Priority can be a huge problem as Bagon's defenses are bad
  • Scarf Mienfoo can switch in on a Dragon Dance, outspeed Bagon at +1 and OHKO it with Hi Jump Kick.
  • Drillbur can easily outspeed bagon if sand is up and ko it with eq
  • Hippopotas can take a hit even at +1 and can Slack Off damage. Life Orb + Sand will take its toll. If Bagon tries to set up, Hippopotas can do a good amount of damage to it with EQ

Outrage >> Dragon Claw. The increase in power is very notable, it allows you to 2HKO Hippopotas an Slowpoke after a Dragon Dance. Also, what is Rock Slide doing? It literally provides no extra coverage, and a neutral Outrage is more powerful than a super effective Rock Slide, so the only thing it hits is Larvesta, which is KOed by a +1 Outrage (almost guaranteed, with 1 HP residual damage it is 100%). Dragon Claw should probably be in the last slot, as it provides a more reliable STAB that doesn't lock you in. Brick Break could be worth a slash since it hits Aron.

Edit: okay, with those changes it becomes the exact on-site set so I don't see why this needs an update tbh.

There's a big problem here: this set is just not good. Whenever I want to use Bagon over Axew (who has better stats) or Dratini (who has better coverage / movepool) I am using it defensively.

One thing you've missed that is huge for Bagon is its access to Wish and its good HP stat along with its more than usable Defense. If Bagon deserves a set on-site, it's a defensive one; perhaps playtest it some more and then get back to us.

(Also, Smogon does not list Wish as a move Bagon learns but it is indeed obtainable via gen iii event)
