#481 Mesprit
Base Stats: 80 HP / 105 Atk / 105 Def / 105 SAtk / 105 SDef / 80 Spd
Ability: Levitate (ground moves miss)

Notable Physical Movepool
U-Turn

Notable Special Movepool
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Thunderbolt
Charge Beam
Ice Beam
Energy Ball
Grass Knot

Notable Support Movepool
Calm Mind
Reflect
Light Screen
Trick Room
Thunder Wave
Stealth Rock

Mesprit, the most balanced of the Sinnoh Trio. It can boltbeam and has a decent enough movepool to do well. The question is, what is it that it can do that others can't? Cresselia has the levitating wall thing down (poor Uxie ._.), Azelf has the fast sweeping thing down, and really the only thing that Mesprit has over those two is a more balanced stat allocation and a true boltbeam. 80 base speed means that it's hammered by a lot of opponents and it needs to run a +Spd nature to outspeed Adamant Heracross, who murders it with Megahorn.

Mesprit @ Choice Specs
Nature: Timid (+Spd -Atk)
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Spd / 252 SAtk
Trait: Levitate
-Psychic
-Thunderbolt
-Ice Beam
-Grass Knot

Sturdy CSpecs user.

Mesprit @ Leftovers
Nature: Bold (+Def -Atk)
EVs: 196 HP / 172 Def / 32 Spd / 108 SAtk
Trait: Levitate
-Reflect / Light Screen
-Psychic
-Grass Knot
-U-Turn

Barrier passer. U-Turn to scout for CB Pursuiters.

In general, I have no idea what a good Mesprit would be, nor do I know which natures are good for it. Bold seems like a good idea, but then Cresselia does walling and anti-Garchomp / Gyarados / etc. better. It's a conundrum.

How did Charm, Healing Wish, and Imprison not get in your support movepool?

How about this:

Mesprit @ Leftovers
~ Shadow Ball
~ Imprison
~ Stealth Rock
~ Thunder Wave

Disables the Disablers, and protects itself from Gengar/Mismagius' Shadow Ball to boot.

Could use Hidden Power over Stealth Rock for some extra imprison goodness

also Calm Mind/Reflect is a nice combo, with boltbeam or possibly something more unexpected. Future Sight and Substitute, possibly.

I think the thing that hurts Mesprit the most is that 80 base speed stat... With Heracross running all over the place having a psychic thats slower than cross can be a bit of a liability IMO. Boltbeam is nice, but there are plenty of pokemon that can do it better obviously. Its obvious that Mesprit is the hardest of the trio to come up with some working strategy for only because Azelf leans so heavily to attacking and Uxie leans heavily defending. Personally of the 3 I happen to like Uxie the best, but thats the style I like... You would have thought that they would have made Azelf the one that runs on you based on its stats, but whatever...

I agree with you when you said that 80 speed is slow, However I really don't thing it being slower than Heracross is the problem. I mean what is Mesprit going to do switch into a Heracross that could hit it with megahorn and like wise is Heracross going to switch into Mespirit that could harm it with Psychic? I don't even see how that's a liability unless Heracross comes in on Mespirt's set up turn.( that could apply to alot of other pokemon as well) However I can see where your coming from with your Heracross statement.

Moving on. Mesprit is just to balanced I wish it's stats were spread out better. Both of it's siblings are better in the way there stats are focused in a couple area's not spead out thoughout the board. Mesprit's in a bind because other pokemon can do a better job than it. I like the sprite though =/

Azelf can't take hits, Uxie/Cresselia can't attack too effectively - Mesprit can do both. He makes a very effective counter to both Gyarados and Garchomp, plus he can take on Nasty Plot Infernape. There's not much that can do all that at once. If you've got Mesprit you're reasonably safe from three major sweepers, leaving you a lot of freedom when constructing your team.

I like BoltBeam/Thunder Wave or Psychic/U-Turn. Scout for Pursuit with U-Turn, paralyze stuff and throw out Thunderbolts and Ice Beams. Highly underrated Pokemon, in my opinion.

I'm planning on getting a Bold Mesprit, just if someday i use it, i think that balanced ain't always the best, the same happened with Registeel i guess.

Mesprit would be better with that 105 Attack and its 75 HP switched, still is a reasonably well Gyarados/Garchomp counter but also makes Heracross and Tyranitar happy to switch in :S

Mesprit @ Leftovers
Levitate
Bold (+Def, -Atk)
252 HP / 172 Def / 80 SpA
~Thunderbolt
~Ice Beam
~Psychic
~U-turn

I'm using that as a Gyarados/Garchomp counter. It can also counter Infernape provided it doesn't come in on a Flare Blitz (it can survie a CC + Flare Blitz, however). I love this Pokémon, and can't wait to try 'im out.

yea, i might trade one of these duders since it can actually do something. with a good defensive spread he could do quite a bit (with some support too).

Wow, I thought I'd be necroposting.

Anyways, I think we're missing the biggest advantage it has. Calm Mind+BoltBeam is only possible by Clefable, Blissey, Dunsparce, Delcatty, Absol, and Mesprit in Standard play. Clefable, Blissey, and Mesprit are the only ones with the stats to actually pull it off. Mesprit is probably the one most apt to sweep with it, if only because it takes more than a physical attack to down it.

Even with that said, I think BoltBeam/Psychic/Filler is still the best moveset. Choose your filler from Calm Mind, Stealth Rock, Yawn, and U-Turn. Bold is obviously the best nature, because it loves to mess up physical attackers.

The low HP hurts this thing waaaaayyyyy more than the low speed does. This thing reminds me of clefable like others have said. This thing learns yawn? I did not know that.

I've caught a Lax natured one, with 25 HP IV and 26 speed IV, the rest's about 15~20. I'm using this set:
Mesprit @ Leftovers
252 speed, 100 Hp, 152 sp. def

Calm Mind
Reflect
Psychic
Toxic

Covers both sides of damage, and can annoy a little with Toxic.

Uxie should have been the running one, not Mesprit =\
