Pet Mod Banhammers - Cycle 3: Playtesting

What time should our roomtours be every week?

Hello!

With the first roomtour of Cycle 2 beginning tomorrow at 3 PM EST, we had to just get one more thing into place before we can start.

As I mentioned earlier, someone proposed in the survey that Moves and Items should cost more points to ban as they have an extremely powerful effect, more so than Pokemon bans. After some discussions with others on the Banhammers Discord, we've made a decision!

For Cycle 2:
- Banning a Pokemon will cost 1 point, like last time
- Banning a Move or Ability will cost 2 points
- Banning an Item will cost 3 points
- If you only gained a single point from the tournament (i.e. If you lost your one game in a single elimination bracket but you did finish the game), you are allowed to ban something that normally costs 2 points.

This new system does a couple of things, keeping the sheer number of bans down for easier teambuilding, adds more strategy to banning things, incentivizes getting far in tournaments so you're able to ban more things while keeping the gap between those who always lose early and those who always go far smaller, and more. I'm very interested to see how this system pans out over the course of Cycle 2, so I hope you'll join us for it!

As mentioned earlier, Cycle 2 begins tomorrow at 3 PM EST! As nothing's been banned yet, this tournament will be played using normal SV OU rules and it will be played on the main Pokemon Showdown server in the Pet Mods room! The Pet Mods room isn't public, so you either need to click the link in the last sentence or go on Showdown, go to the plus button where the chatroom are shown, scroll to the bottom, click "Join other room" and type "petmods". See you there!

The first roomtour of Banhammers Cycle 2 is in the books! Let's take a look at the results and, more importantly, the first bans!

Fun fact, PQRDG only got 2nd place in the tournament, with me winning, but since the tournament was double elimination and they lost round 1, they played and won so many games leading up to getting second that they managed to get more points than the winner of the tournament

This roomtour was just a normal OU roomtour, so there's nothing groundbreaking to take away from it, but there were a couple interesting occurences, like Sun being absolutely everywhere and being successful, too, and a few weird Pokemon already coming out before we even had any bans, like Dugtrio-Alola, Greedent, and Drifblim.

And now for what you're here for, the first bans of Cycle 2!

CYCLE 2 - WEEK 1 BANS
Pokemon: Kingambit, Tornadus-Therian, Sneasler, Ting-Lu, Corviknight, Ursaluna, Gholdengo, Enamorus-Base, Kleavor, Dragapult
Moves: Rapid Spin, Defog, Salt Cure, Spikes, Ceaseless Edge, U-Turn
Items: Heavy-Duty Boots, Booster Energy, Choice Scarf, Choice Specs
Abilities: Drought, Regenerator, Levitate, Purifying Salt
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ +Volcarona, +Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, -Kingambit, -Tornadus-Therian, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus-Base, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt

Definitely a few interesting bans here. The main thing about this set of bans is the hazard metagame, which has been mostly gutted. Your ways of removing hazards are now extremely limited (just Tidy Up and Mortal Spin to remove them, plus Court Change and Magic Bounce to punish others for trying to set them up) and you can't ignore them anymore with Heavy-Duty Boots, but on the flip side Spikes and Ceaseless Edge are now banned, as well as Kleavor if you wanna set rocks you have to risk being stopped by Magic Bounce or Taunt. I expect to see a lot of Glimmora and Webs next week to abuse this, as as more grounded Poison-types, Maushold, and Hatterene to try to alleviate hazard pressure.

The other main thing these bans did was making it harder to be super fast, getting rid of Choice Scarf (and Specs, we Gen 3 now), Booster Energy, and Dragapult. Fast sweepers don't have to worry as much about being revenge killed, while Speed control like Webs become even more valuable. Zamazenta (who went basically untouched surprisingly) is also now the fastest relevant mon outside of weather.

Also, note that the challenge command unbans Volcarona and Urshifu-RS, which were banned in OU earlier today, but were legal when the Cycle started, so they will stay legal until someone bans them. Can't have the OU council doing our job for us, unless they wanna join the tourneys.

That's all for now! I'll announce in the the Discord when teambuilder support for the metagame is live on DragonHeaven later, so stay tuned for that!

Lmao dawg what did Kleavor do to deserve a Week 1 ban?!?!?
Exist as part of the hazard game. Don't worry, other ways to set and remove hazards will be gone by next week too, such is the fate of banhammers. (Or you know we can agree to try to keep a metagame with just permanent rocks like DPP, could be fun, right? We could try that, right?)

A few interesting things to note. Mossy Sandwich won the tournament, gaining a whopping 14 points, which is most definitely a record. For the tournament itself, it was Hyper Offense everywhere. From Screens, to Webs, to "Hazard Lead + 5 setup sweepers", games were flying by and many a team was swept. Which is kinda wild, since a lot of good defensive things weren't even banned yet, but everyone collectively decided to make games end fast (me included) and I respect that. The MVP of the tournament was definitely Moltres-Galar, claiming many sweeps and with Mossy's Moltres in particular being a menace, as it was running Mirror Herb to boost alongside other Hyper Offense teams and sweep through them. Other notes were Landorus being #1 in usage (really abusing the fact that it managed to not get banned week 1), Toxic Spikes and Rocks were of course really strong, with our few removal options coming out to try and handle them (Cinderace, Glimmora, Poison-types, though no Maushold surprisingly), and Rain felt really strong but didn't really get used much disappointingly.

So, let's see what kind of bans this chaos brought us!

CYCLE 2 - WEEK 2 BANS
Pokemon: Volcarona, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Landorus-Therian, Enamorus-Therian, Tornadus-Incarnate, Thundurus-Incarnate, Thundurus-Therian, Moltres-Galar, Articuno-Galar, Zapdos-Galar, Great Tusk, Pelipper, Meowscarada, Hoopa-Unbound, Iron Valiant, Cinderace, Azumarill
Moves: Recover, Agility, Dragon Dance, Knock Off, Stored Power, Sticky Web, Surging Strikes, Taunt, Belly Drum, Stealth Rock
Items: Light Clay
Abilities: Protosynthesis, Quark Drive
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Kingambit, -Tornadus, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt, -Landorus, -Thundurus, -Moltres-Galar, -Articuno-Galar, -Zapdos-Galar, -Great Tusk, -Pelipper, -Meowscarada, -Hoopa-Unbound, -Iron Valiant, -Cinderace, -Azumarill, -Recover, -Agility, -Dragon Dance, -Knock Off, -Stored Power, -Sticky Web, -Surging Strikes, -Taunt, -Belly Drum, -Stealth Rock, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Quark Drive

The main takeaway here is the insane amount of Pokemon bans, with nearly 30 mons getting banned between the bans itself and the 2 ability bans, which'll surely make the usage stats look quite different next time. Additionally, Pelipper being banned means we're down to Snow and Sand for weathers, and Stealth Rock and Sticky Web's bans means we only have Toxic Spikes left for hazards, so Rocks-weak mons can breathe a sigh of relief. Toxic Spikes being the only hazard is pretty interesting, as its arguably the weakest hazard but can still really change games. Be sure to pack grounded Poison-types.

That's all for now, see you next week for the third roomtour!

Couple things to note. First, you're probably wondering at how the heck Polteageist got up there, you'd think that thing would never sniff #1 in usage in any meta, let alone here where a lot of usually strong mons are still available. Well, the explanation is very simple and can be described in 3 phrases: Shell Smash, Hyper Offense, and Psychic Surge. This was another pretty Hyper Offense heavy weak, though far from that of last week, mainly featuring Psychic Terrain teams featuring Indeedee setting Psychic Terrain and Armarouge clicking Expanding Force. Polteageist was a fixture on these teams, getting to setup and sweep without having to worry about priority stopping it. The stats aren't super diverse in general due to repeated teams, but there was still a lot here, from Snow with Cetitan, to balance with Heatran, to Zamazenta who was legal and untouched somehow, and more.

Now, for the bans!
CYCLE 2 - WEEK 3 BANS

Pretty lowkey bans this time around, but there are a few notable things to talk about here. A few OU/borderling OU staples that have surprisingly survived this long are now gone, being Heatran, Hippowdon, and Dragonite, as well as Zamazenta finally getting banned after I got to abuse it for 3 weeks. HO took a few more big hits with Psychic Surge, Focus Sash, Quick Claw, and Swords Dance being gone as well, but they'll probably adapt somehow. Aside from that, nothing too major, still lots of strong options left to use, which I look forward to see in the next tournament!

Also, this has been effect since week 1 but I forgot to announce it, so this is the formal announcement that the deadline for sending bans to me is now 11:59 PM EST on the day after the roomtour finishes. This is to give everyone around a week to build around the new bans.

That's all for now, see you soon!

Hello!

This'll be quick because it is 4:30 AM and the tournament in question was also very short, but we had the fourth roomtour of Cycle 2 last Saturday, so let's see what happened!

CYCLE 2 - WEEK 4 BANS
Pokemon: Volcanion, Baxcalibur, Zapdos

Only 5 things got banned and yet this week's bans are significantly more impactful than last week's lol. This is mainly because the last hazard move, Toxic Spikes, is now banned, meaning that the only way to set any hazards is through Glimmora or Glimmet's Toxic Debris. Aside from that, nothing too crazy, just removing 3 more high BST mons that were still kicking.

That's all for now, see you next week for the second-to-last tournament of Cycle 2!

Popping in for a quick second for two quick things.
First, a quick reminder that the fifth roomtour of Cycle 2 will be tomorrow at 3 PM EST in the Pet Mods room on Pokemon Showdown!

Second, since we're two-thirds of the way through Cycle 2, I figured it'd be interesting to check out the combined usage stats of all the tournament so far, seeing what commons mons have survived thus far and how much of an impact the early tournaments had on the stats before stuff started getting banned

| 83 | Gallade | 1 | 1.25% | 0.00% |

A couple notes here:
- Landorus-T sits comfortably at #1, just like the days of OU's past. The fact that it didn't get banned until Week 2, meaning that it was legal for the 2 biggest tournaments, helped a lot. This also explains how Great Tusk and Iron Valiant came in at #4.
- In second place is a tie between the just now banned Baxcalibur and the most common still legal Pokemon, being Hatterene
- Polteageist is the only Pokemon that isn't OU in vanilla to crack the top 10, which was definitely mainly from its Week 3 performance. Polteageist is a UU mon, so that isn't too crazy, but it is a good example of previously (mostly) unseen things rising up in the absence of better options.
- Torkoal's 8 uses from exclusively Week 1 propelled it into the upper echelons of the list. It's still legal if you want to help it climb further, though Drought getting banned immediately should tell you why it hasn't been used since Week 1
- The most used Pokemon with a 100% winrate is a tie at 3 between Abomasnow and Cetitan, a core I've personally had a lot of success using recently
- Conversely, the most common with a 0% winrate is Braviary-H at 4 uses. Aside from the already banned Ursaluna, every Pokemon above it has at least 2 wins
- No NFEs or LCs have been used so far, meaning that we haven't quite sunken to the absolute depths yet but maybe these last two weeks will change that

I'll do this again after Week 6 to see how things change, but this does show that the metagame isn't changing nearly as drastically as it did from week-to-week in Cycle 1, but large changes are still quite evident, which I think is the happy medium we want to hit.

See you tomorrow for the next tournament!

Another quick tournament today, so here's a quick recap!

Hello!

If you haven't noticed, I did not post tournament results for the roomtour yesterday. This is because, as you might've guessed, a tournament did not take place yesterday due to low turnout (as in I was the only person who showed up LMAO). But even outside of that, the writing was very clearly on the wall considering the fact that the fourth and fifth roomtours only had 2 entrants each, a massive drop off from the pretty high turnouts of the first 3 weeks. Thus, it's clear that interest in the roomtour aspect of this cycle has gone down to the point where we should move on to the playtesting portion of Cycle 2. As such, the sixth roomtour of Cycle 2 will not be rescheduled, making last week's roomtour the final roomtour and set of bans of Cycle 2. From here on, the tier will be tiered like a regular tier, but council can't unban anything that was banned through the first five weeks.

So, what kind of meta do we have now? I'll make some more detailed resources later (ik I said this in Cycle 1 and then never did but I promise this time), but I'll quickly list some mons I expect to do well:
:arcanine-hisui:With Choice Band still around and not having to worry about hazards anymore, HArcanine jumps out as a premier wallbreaking option. Banded Head Smash was already extremely hard to switch in to, but it's even harder now when you can't consistently pressure it with hazards or temporarily wall it with the likes of Great Tusk or Hippowdon. Plus, it's the best ESpeed user left with Dragonite gone and Lucario not being able to use Swords Dance
:kilowattrel:A mon I've gotten a ton of use out of in the last couple weeks, Kilowattrel in finally in an environment where it can be the premier Electric pivot it wants to be. It's still a bit weak (especially with Hurricane banned0, but getting to freely run Life Orb helps a bit, it has a pretty much unmatched Speed tier with the lack of Dragapult or Zamazenta (with the best Pokemon that's faster than it being Hisuian Electrode, which Volt Absorb Kilo walls, or maybe Barraskewda) and still gets to use Volt Switch. Plus, it can maybe kinda-sorta fill Zapdos' defensive niche since it can use Roost. Should be a great mon to throw on any offensive or balance team
:glimmora:Glimmora didn't lose much aside from hazards and Choice Specs/Scarf, which means that it still has Toxic Debris. With all hazard-setting moves banned, the only way to set hazards is through Glimmora's Toxic Debris, automatically giving it a niche. But even without that, Glimmora is still a bona fide OU mon that barely got nerfed, should be a great mon.
:slowking-galar:Another mon I've used a lot, losing Regenerator sucks and makes it die a lot faster, but aside from that it's still a great wall and pivot. Probably the best Poison-type not named Glimmora. Similarly, regular Slowking should also be pretty good as a bulky Water pivot as well.
:abomasnow::cetitan:I've abused this core for the last few weeks and it somehow dodged a ban each time, but with Drought and Drizzle gone and not having to worry about hazards anymore allowing Cetitan to run Life Orb or Choice Band, Cetitan becomes an actual threat in Snow, even with Belly Drum banned. Plus, with screens being dead as a playstyle, if you want to run screens, Veil Abomasnow is still okay at that.
:tyranitar::lycanroc::dugtrio-alola:I consider this in the weaker of the weather cores, though maybe I'm biased, but Sand can also thrive here with Great Tusk and Landorus gone.
:garchomp:Garchomp did lose a lot of its best tools in Swords Dance, Rocks, and Spikes, but with basically every other good Ground-type gone or nerfed to oblivion, Garchomp is once again the best Ground-type around, and by a pretty large margin too. When your next best bets are Recover-less Gastrodon, Krookodile, Sandaconda, Palossand, and Mudsdale, you should expect to see Garchomp a lot.
:skeledirge::basculegion::hatterene::zarude::rillaboom::maushold:While not too many, there are a good number of already good Pokemon that either managed to come out unscathed or only had one of their many options removed, so these should remain viable. Skeledirge only got buffed with hazards being gone and losing nothing, Basculegion is still Basculegion, just without rain usually, Hatterene only lost Trick Room, and Zarude and Rillaboom only lost U-Turn and Swords Dance, and even Maushold kept basically everything aside from U-Turn and Taunt.

We'll have to wait and see what rises to the top and what ends up needing to be banned in the future. To play this new metagame, I recommend using DragonHeaven's teambuilder to build a team, then going to the main server, setting your Tera types, and challenging your opponent there. However, with DragonHeaven's imminent Gen 9 update, you'll soon be easily able to play the metagame there as well.

Lastly, council member Ema Skye has left the council due to time constraints, which means that I'm looking for at least 1 person to add to the council. You'll be tasked with tiering for the rest of Cycle 2 and then helping me run future cycles during DLC metas. If you're interested in joining the council, just let me know on Discord!

That's all for now, hope to see you playing the new Banhammers metagame!

After an 11 month hiatus, Banhammers is back!

A LOT has changed since Cycle 2 ended, as that Cycle happened all the way back during the HOME metagame, back when DH wasn't even updated to Gen 9 yet. Since then, we've had both rounds of DLC Pokemon, a ton of strong moves getting more distribution, and a whole new mechanic in Stellar Tera, which means a whole new world of things to ban!

With all of this change, Banhammers will also go through some changes. This will be the last cycle of Banhammers that'll be based on regular Gen 9 OU, so I want to make sure this makes the lasting impact that the first two cycles failed to. This'll be done in two ways. First, the points system from Cycle 2 will be retained but there will only be 4 roomtours instead of 6. By the end of the first two cycles, participation dropped off a cliff, likely in part due to burnout, so capping the number of tournaments at 4 will make it more likely that more people make it to the end, keeping some interest going into the playtesting phase. If you need a reminder of the points system, you can read this excerpt from the OP below:
2. After each roomtour, everyone who played in the tournament will receive points. These points will be used to ban things. You receive 1 point for completing a game in the tournament (defined as either finishing a game, or forfeiting at a point where you were guaranteed to lose), 1 point for every game you win, and an additional point for winning the tournament.
3. After receiving their points, players can ban Pokemon, Moves, Items, and Abilities based on how many points they earned. It costs 1 point to ban a Pokemon, 2 points to ban a Move or Ability, and 3 points to ban an item. If a player only earned 1 point in the entire tournament, they are allowed to ban something that would normally cost them 2 points. Players cannot unban anything, add or remove clauses, be used for complex bans, or ban anything that's not a Pokemon, Move, Item, or Ability. All of a player's points must be used before the next roomtour and unused points do not carry over between roomtours.
The second big change to Banhammers is not a change in rules or procedure but more of a change in mindset. The first two cycles of Banhammers were fun while they lasted, but the thing is that they didn't last. This was in part due to having too many tournaments leading to burnout so there was hardly anyone left for what was to come after, but also because I didn't make much of an attempt to drive interest up again. Thus, for Cycle 3, we'll try to leave behind a real metagame rather just a "novelty", as the first two cycles were. To achieve this, I'm gonna try what I'll call the Destroy, Build, Destroy Plan:
- Destroy - Ban stuff after that week's roomtours as usual
- Build - Build the metagame back up by sharing sample teams and stuff to look out for
- Destroy - Use what we learned from the Building phase to play the week's tournament, then ban stuff again and repeat the cycle

The key change here is the "Build" part of the plan. The other reason why I think interest in the first two cycles dropped so significantly by the end was because it gets exponentially harder to build as the bans stack up. So, to help with this, I'll try to create multiple sample teams every week for people to use, allowing anyone to participate in the fun without having to fumble around the teambuilder every week. Additionally, I'll also try to share what threats catch my eye every week, which should hopefully gives people who don't wanna use sample some teambuilding ideas. I'm also curious to see what effects doing this will have on what people ban, since discussion between tours was non-existent in the past so people usually didn't come in already knowing what they'd ban.

And, after all the roomtours are said and done, we'll continue to Build the metagame from there, with my tentative plan being to run a forum tour soon after to give us a more detailed look at where we should go from there.

And that's all! The current plan is to have the first roomtour of Cycle 3 this weekend, but there are a couple orders of business to attend to first:
- I am looking for at least 2 people to become members of council, where they'll help me collect and organize everyone's bans, build sample teams, and drive metagame discussion
- A poll to decide what time roomtours should take place is now open at the top of the thread

And that's all! Hope to see all of you join us for some Banhammering once again!

Popping in real quick to remind everyone to be sure to get your vote in for what time Cycle 3's roomtours should be, with the poll being at the top of this thread!

With the few votes we have so far, the times are quite spread, but we're trending towards having the tournaments on Saturdays. I'll have an official announcement out tonight once the poll closes.

Also, I'm still looking for council members, so if you're interested in that, then please let me know!

And for everyone planning on participating in the first roomtour this weekend but lacking a team, then don't fret! This is normally where I'd post some teams I've built myself to help you out, but with the first roomtour taking place in regular old OU, any of these sample teams from the OU forum will work just fine. So instead, I'll just link some additional teams from RMTs below:
:bellibolt::basculegion::dragonite::iron treads::barraskewda::pelipper: - Rick Ross Rain by spook
:clodsire::garganacl::zamazenta::tornadus-therian::cinderace::iron valiant: - Anti-Weather Bulky Offense by Vorulito

:torkoal::hatterene::great tusk::slither wing::walking wake::gouging fire: - Slither Wing Sun by RKOtaku

That's all for now, hope to see this weekend!

The time poll is now closed. The results are quite spread out, so while I didn't vote for this time myself, in an effort to have a time comfortable for me but as close to times other people can work with as possible, roomtours for Cycle 3 will take place on Saturdays at 3 PM EST! This could change if the turnout ends up being poor but this will be the time for today's roomtour.

That's all for now, see you in a little less than 15 hours!

As you'd expect with a Gen 9 OU roomtour, offense reigned supreme here with appearances from Webs, Rain, Sun, Terrain Offense, and just regular old offense. On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, we saw some appearances from stall with mixed results. Great Tusk being #1 in usage is no real surprise, Hatterene having 6 uses with a 100% winrate is hilarious, and most other things are fairly normal, though the fact that Raging Bolt saw no usage is quite surprising (maybe the half of this tournament being VaporeMons council members that are tired of seeing that mon contributed to that lol).

That's basically it, it was an OU tour so we weren't gonna get the deepest revelations or anything like we will once the bans take effect, but I do wanna mention one set I had a ton of fun using:
:sm/walking wake:
Walking Wake @ Choice Specs
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Steam
- Draco Meteor
- Flamethrower
- Dragon Pulse

After getting bodied in my first two games of the tournament (well I could've won my second if I won a Sucker Punch mindgame, but if you know me you know that didn't end well LMAO), I switched to a Sun team with this set I stole from this post in the OU VR Thread and this mon is RIDICULOUS. Hits like crack, both in how fun it is to use and how much damage it deals. This + Venusaur in Sun carried me to 3 wins to finish my tournament, it was exhilarating.

That's all for now, see you soon with the bans!

- Some fairly significant early bans here, but I feel like it's less so than the first two cycles from what I can remember, as a good number of OU mons are still untouched after 1 week
- Knock Off's ban means that Heavy-Duty Boots go even crazier
- Related to the above, we probably begrudgingly need Beaf Cultist or someone else to tell us how broken stall is every week (maybe only like one battle a week tho), since you could imagine that a lot of bans are gonna favor nerfing offense (just like real tiering). That said, bans on Toxic, Spikes, Gliscor, and Clodsire do hurt stall a bit, but it looks quite strong
- Special Ice-types found dead in a ditch. Remind me to build a Chilly Reception + Tera Ice Blizzard Kyurem sample team this week
- Earth Power being banned would be a huge issue if Archaludon was legal, but it's not, so that's not too impactful right now aside from nerfing some mons' coverage, especially with the best purely special Ground-type getting banned
- Speaking of the above, the obligatory Paradox ability ban strikes again, was nice to have Great Tusk and Walking Wake (who also got separately banned) while it lasted. Quark Drive survives for now, wonder if that'll stick around this time, especially with Booster Energy getting banned
- Sun suffers a ton from Protosynthesis getting banned, definitely being the most nerfed weather. Rain gets nerfs in Pelipper, Barraskewda, Ice Beam, and Flip Turn bans, but it's still usable. Return to Gen 6 Politoed + Kingdra teams, with some Floatzel or Basculegion sprinkled on
- Rillaboom and Light Clay's bans hurt HO early on, maybe we see some Pincurchin/ETerrain Electrode-H (especially since it's the only way to activate Quark Drive now) or PsySpam stuff. Would also say Webs but Boots will be everywhere so good luck with that
- Volt Switch also dying leaves U-Turn and Parting Shot (and Chilly Reception) as your only pivoting options
- Bans of a decent number of OU mons certainly lowers the power level, but like I said earlier, we do still have a good number of untouched OU threats, so teams next week will be very different but not completely foreign

That's all for now. With the decent Week 1 turnout, we'll go with 3 PM EST again on Saturday, June 15th. Along with the sample teams I'll post later this week, you'll be able to teambuild on DH very soon, so look out for that!
See you soon with some sample teams later this week!

For everyone planning on entering this week's roomtour, I've got some sample teams for you!

Building for this week I felt wasn't super hard yet, in part due to teambuilder support on DH, but also because like I mentioned in the recap in the last post, a good number of OU mons are fairly untouched, so you can still get by with stealing sets from SmogDex. That's not to say that the stuff we did lose didn't matter, though, especially in the hazard control department with Great Tusk and Iron Treads gone and most lower tier options still kinda sucking. At the very least, Heavy-Duty Boots are probably broken right now so not having good hazard control isn't the end of the world.

Anyways, here's some of the teams I built this week:

If you have any suggestions to improve the above teams and are willing to give them out, then please feel free to!

:meowscarada::landorus-therian::corviknight::iron valiant::kyurem::slowking-galar: - That Blizzard Kyurem Team I Promised

Along with the teams, I've also added a brief speculatory viability list based on the changes so far. This is obviously very speculatory, since no games of this week of Banhammers have been played yet, but it'll still help you with building, plus it'll be fun to see how this changes over the next couple weeks

For a couple of brief takeaways from this tournament:
- Corviknight absolutely dominated this tournament, benefitting greatly from the lower power level and lack of Gholdengo to block its Defogs and Body Presses. This overall contributed to bulky balance being the name of the game for this tour, with bulky teammates like Slowking-G and Clefable giving you a great defensive core to support weaker but still strong offensive threats like Weavile, Kyurem, and Meowscarada
- Speaking of offensive threats, Darkrai getting to Week 2 untouched was quite surprising and it proved why that was a mistake on our part. Well, it went 1-5 with the win coming against another Darkrai team, but believe me, it was a menace in the games even if it ended up coming short in the end
- Dark-types overall went crazy, with Darkrai, Meowscarada, Weavile, and Samurott-H all being top threats, being more than able to make up for the absence of Kingambit and Roaring Moon. Helps a lot that Iron Valiant was a lot less flexible without Booster Energy and the loss of a couple Dark checks like Zamazenta
- Hattrem! I used Hattrem on PsySpam because it's genuinely better in the role of Eject Button Magic Bounce pivot than Espeon (though maybe it would've been better to use Espeon as an actual offensive threat hmmmmm) but then I failed to switch into hazard moves and then won the game before I could send it out. Oops!
- The prophesized Kyurem + Chilly Reception Slowking-G core was real today, with Kyurem managing to go 2-0 with help from Slowking's Snow setting
- Aside from Chilly Reception, no weathers were used, seeing a sharp dip in usage after Rain and Sun did quite well last week. Instead, we had a couple terrains, both used by me, with mixed results

Additionally, we have this week's ban already, so here they are!

CYCLE 3 - WEEK 2 BANS
Pokémon: Clefable, Corviknight, Darkrai, Dragonite, Maushold, Primarina, Samurott-Hisui, Slowking-Galar, Weavile
Moves: Focus Blast, Glare, Sticky Web
Items: N/A
Abilities: Unaware, Quark Drive
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Barraskewda, -Cinderace, -Clodsire, -Dragapult, -Enamorus-Base, -Gholdengo, -Gliscor, -Hatterene, -Iron Treads, -Kingambit, -Ogerpon-Wellspring, -Pelipper, -Rillaboom, -Walking Wake, -Zamazenta, -Earth Power, -Flip Turn, -Freeze-Dry, -Ice Beam, -Knock Off, -Spikes, -Taunt, -Thunder Wave, -Toxic, -Volt Switch, -Booster Energy, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Clefable, -Corviknight, -Darkrai, -Dragonite, -Maushold, -Primarina, -Samurott-Hisui, -Slowking-Galar, -Weavile, -Focus Blast, -Glare, -Sticky Web, -Unaware, -Quark Drive
A couple quick thoughts on these:
- Mostly Pokemon bans (which makes sense, they do be cost efficient) that once again serve to generally lower the tier's power level. Unlike last week, these seem to nerf bulkier teams more than more offensive ones with the losses of Corv, Glowking, and Clefable, though losing top offensive threats like Darkari, Dragonite, and Samurott-H is significant as well
- While a bunch of Dark-types just got banned, the bans of Clef, Primarina, and Focus Blast means that Dark-types stay winning
- Unaware's ban might just kill Stall, with Clef's ban adding insult to injury. Better bring out like 3 Haze mons
- Sticky Web and Samurott-H's ban mean that the only hazards that exist are now Stealth Rock (both the move and through Stone Axe) and Toxic Spikes (through the move and Toxic Debris), so while Heavy-Duty Boots are still super strong, they'll mainly only be required for Rock-weak mons, especially if you have a grounded Poison-type for TSpikes
- I got very excited to use my boy Dragonite, used it twice and misplayed horribly both times, then it got banned, I am not okay rn...
- Overall, a couple pretty significant changes tis week. While a number of balance staples are gone, I do expect to see fairly bulky teams do well next week as well as the power level drops and numerous OU-level bulky mons still rock

That's all for now, see you for sample teams later in the week!

Week 3 Sample Teams!

Building was definitely tough this week, but there are still a good amount of "normal" options out there through two weeks. This week is definitely the first where I think some really strong options that haven't gotten play so far are really gonna shine.

As always, teambuilder support is available on DH, but if you're stuck or don't have time to build this week, then I've got you covered with some teams below.

First, hilariously enough, both weather teams from my Week 2 Sample Teams post are still entirely legal, which you can see below:
Additionally, here are four more teams I've built this week:

I've only just now realized that I forgot to change the thread's title after last week's tournament, so I'm popping in real quick to remind everyone that Roomtour #3 of Cycle 3 will be tomorrow, June 22nd at 3 PM EST in the Pet Mods room on Pokemon Showdown!

Hope to see you there!

A couple brief takeaways:
- This tournament was ROUGH for me. I think most of it was me misplaying, but maybe the meta was just also rough to play as well. With most of the strong top tier options gone by now, it's really easy to see how strong the remaining options that got forgotten about are compared to the relatively low power levels of the new metagame around them. I envisioned while building that this week we were gonna see things that have always been strong but overlooked get a real chance to shine and I think I was right about that between the likes of Tornadus-T, Garchomp, Scizor, Glimmora, DDance Kyurem, and this week's #1 in Deoxys-Speed
- That said, we still had room for previously not as strong Pokemon to do really well, with Hydreigon being a menace, our dear mascot Tinkaton absolutely cooking, and Slowking filling the void left being by Slowking-G's ban (to less than stellar results, but still)
- The main takeaway I have from this tournament is, as I kinda expected, this metagame was VERY bulky. I literally won my first game of the today by PP stalling a Garganacl I couldn't break through by simply switching infinitely between my two Regen mons, it was very funny. Even outside of the Regenerator infestation (including Slowking, Torn-T, Amoonguss, Toxapex, and even Hydrapple (not Reuniclus, that one was Magic Guard)), we had OU worthy walls like Ting-Lu and Garganacl getting to take full advantage of the weaker metagame, and Skarmory too but to less success. While offense wasn't completely stuffed or anything, no where near that as adpg.alt did very well with an HO team, the tools that balance had this week really let it shine.
- That said, we did have a bulky metagame, but that doesn't mean that stall was any good. Stall without Clefable or Unaware is in an extremely rough spot and it showed. Shoutouts to Mirror Coat Alomomola, though
- Meowscarada once again underperforming kinda surprises me, Knock Off (and Spikes, ig) are the only bans that significantly affected it, so while it sucks that it has to rely on Throat Chop as Dark STAB, it still has mostly everything that makes it so good in base OU but in a much weaker metagame. Either Meowscarada is a fraud or we (and "we" being "me" because I was the only who used it) are using it wrong. I guess it didn't help that Skarmory, Scizor, and Tinkaton were some of the most used mons in this tournament, but still
- Nearly every mon I ranked in High or Mid-High on my speculatory viability list was used except Moltres, Heatran, and Serperior. I definitely understand forgetting that Moltres exists and Serperior losing Glare kinda ruins it so that makes sense, but no Heatran usage surprises me. I might just be latching on to what I'm used to and not seeing the bigger picture, cuz Heatran losing Taunt and Earth Power does suck a lot, but dang

So, this was a pretty interesting metagame that we had this week. Time to blow it all up!

CYCLE 3 - WEEK 3 BANS
Pokémon: Blissey, Ceruledge, Chansey, Garchomp, Garganacl, Glimmora, Hydreigon, Ogerpon-Cornerstone, Ting-Lu
Moves: Close Combat, Dragon Dance, Meteor Beam, Roost, Scale Shot, Stealth Rock, Tera Blast
Items: Heavy-Duty-Boots
Abilities: Chlorophyll, Regenerator, Swift Swim
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Barraskewda, -Cinderace, -Clodsire, -Dragapult, -Enamorus-Base, -Gholdengo, -Gliscor, -Hatterene, -Iron Treads, -Kingambit, -Ogerpon-Wellspring, -Pelipper, -Rillaboom, -Walking Wake, -Zamazenta, -Earth Power, -Flip Turn, -Freeze-Dry, -Ice Beam, -Knock Off, -Spikes, -Taunt, -Thunder Wave, -Toxic, -Volt Switch, -Booster Energy, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Clefable, -Corviknight, -Darkrai, -Dragonite, -Maushold, -Primarina, -Samurott-Hisui, -Slowking-Galar, -Weavile, -Focus Blast, -Glare, -Sticky Web, -Unaware, -Quark Drive, -Blissey, -Ceruledge, -Chansey, -Garchomp, -Garganacl, -Glimmora, -Hydreigon, -Ogerpon-Cornerstone, -Ting-Lu, -Close Combat, -Dragon Dance, -Meteor Beam, -Roost, -Scale Shot, -Stealth Rock, -Tera Blast, -Heavy-Duty-Boots, -Chlorophyll, -Swift Swim, -Regenerator
Some BIG bans this week, let's talk about them:
- Bans on Garganacl, Ting-Lu, and especially Regenerator, as well as Chansey/Blissey to a lesser extent, will heavily nerf the bulky balance meta. While a lot of the bans still very much lowered the power level of the metagame, bulky teams have gotten severely less bulky with just these bans.
- Regenerator's ban also probably puts the absolute final nail in the coffin for stall, if it wasn't there already
- While only few of the top offensive threats of this meta got banned, being Glimmora, Hydreigon, Ogerpon-C, Ceruledge, and Garchomp, bans on move and ability bans actually do nerf offensive mons quite a bit. Many Pokemon lose their best STAB or coverage option with Close Combat gone, Tera Blast's ban means that Tera's ability to help a mon past a check is weakened, Meteor Beam removes an extremely powerful setup option for a lot of Special Attackers like Deoxys-S, and Dragon-types might just be dead with Draco, DDance, and Scale Shot all getting axed.
- The ban on Heavy-Duty Boots would be absolutely huge, if Stealth Rock didn't also get banned at the same time. Not gonna lie, I think it would've been very interesting to keep Rocks around, as they feel a lot weaker without Spikes around, but oh well. Toxic Spikes are now the only legal hazard, with the best setter after Glimmora's ban being Toxapex (even without Regen) by far. I expect TSpikes to be kinda rare since they're hard to get up, but I'd recommend bringing a grounded Poison-type next week just in case, especially if someone pulls up with Glimmet
- However, the ban on Boots isn't completely a non-factor, as Kleavor's Stone Axe still exists as a way to set Rocks. With the only major nerf to Kleavor being the ban on Close Combat and now having this genuine niche of the only legal Rocks setter, I expect Kleavor to see some good usage next week
- Chlorophyll and Swift Swim's bans nerf Sun and Rain quite a bit. Sun was already cooked with the past Paradoxes gone, but it's probably completely over for that archetype now. Torkoal is probably completely unviable now, with Ninetales being a much better bet as a pretty strong Fire-type wallbreaker and sweeper. Rain takes another big blow after losing Pelipper, Barraskewda, and Flip Turn in Week 1, but Rain still has good options in Zapdos, Greninja-Bond, Manaphy, Keldeo, or even Adaptability Basculegion or Crawdaunt to keep it going. Snow is probably still bad and Sand might actually be the best weather now, with Excadrill just getting bans as the power level drops, though it still hates dealing with Lando-T
- Scizor, Deoxys-S, and Landorus-T all came out with only a single notable nerf (CC for Scizor, Stealth Rock for the latter two), so I expect them to once again see high usage next week. The Landorus-T agenda stays strong, love to see it

And that's all for now! Very excited to see how next week's roomtour goes. Remember that next week's roomtour is the final roomtour of Cycle 3 (final one where you can earn points for bans, anyway), so you want to shape the metagame in your image, this'll be your last chance! Hope to see you there on Saturday, June 29th at 3 PM EST.

See you later this week for sample teams!

Week 4 samples!

I will not lie, I just threw things at the wall this week, teambuilding expectedly got pretty hard this week due to the massive shakeup from last week's bans, but these teams should hopefully be decent. I'm very excited to see what other people come up with if they don't opt to use the sample teams, which I'll now post below!

:zapdos::politoed::greninja::landorus-therian::azumarill::scizor: - Azumarill Rain
:serperior::toxapex::kleavor::heatran::zapdos::excadrill: - Serperior "Hazard Stack"

:kyurem::slowking::meowscarada::landorus-therian::pecharunt::tinkaton: - Kyurem (and its terrible movepool) Balance

Before I get to the viability list for this week, I just really want to draw attention to how dire Kyurem's situation is. Almost every OU mon that's still in the metagame has gotten some significant nerfs for sure, some absolutely ruining them like Unaware-less Dondozo or Sticky Web-less Ribombee, but Kyurem is a special case as it's been a great mon every week and instead of banning it we all just collectively worked to together to absolutely GUT its movepool. No Freeze-Dry, No Ice Beam, No Focus Blast, No Earth Power, No Draco Meteor, No Dragon Dance, No Tera Blast, No Scale Shot. All it has now is Tera Ice Blizzard and a dream and I think that's beautiful.

Anyway, here's the speculatory viability list for this week!
