Bastiodon [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

The shield that can't be broken *cough

[Overview]

Wielding massive defensive stats, a typing that gives it a bunch of nifty resistances, and the ability to set up Stealth Rock and phaze with Roar, Bastiodon has a solid niche on defensive teams. However, its rare and defensive Steel typing is sadly hindered by its additional Rock typing, giving it many exploitable weaknesses, including two 4x ones to very common offensive types in the tier, Fighting and Ground. In addition, Bastiodon has no offensive presence or reliable recovery moves, so it can easily end up being dead weight to the team. While these traits hinder Bastiodon greatly, some stall teams still find this Pokemon's plethora of resistances and support moves to be just what they need to patch the holes in their defenses.

[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Roar
move 3: Magic Coat
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Sturdy
nature: Careful
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Bastiodon will start off most games by switching in on a defensive Pokemon or a Pokemon with ineffective attacks to set up Stealth Rock to support the team. Magic Coat will bounce back Taunt or harmful statuses, ensuring Bastiodon's longevity; it can also reflect any incoming Spikes or Toxic Spikes, saving the team time for setting up while the opponent has to lay down entry hazards. One of Bastiodon's redeeming qualities is its treasured ability to safely counter the antics of Pokemon with the Prankster ability, such as Swagger and Foul Play Liepard and Copycat and Roar Riolu, as Magic Coat has a higher priority than what Prankster gives their moves. Once enough entry hazards are on the opponent's side of the field, Bastiodon can begin phazing with Roar, racking up as much damage as possible. Toxic is in the last slot as it is the only significant source of damage Bastiodon can offer, and it can neuter some important Pokemon such as Alomomola and Audino who have the Regenerator ability, which minimizes entry hazard damage. It also badly poisons Flying-type and levitating Pokemon, who avoid Toxic Spikes.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Sturdy is the better ability because it nearly guarantees that Bastiodon will set up Stealth Rock, ensuring only Bonemerang Marowak and Pokemon with the ability Mold Breaker can stop it. Against more offensive teams, this will most likely be all that Bastiodon is able to accomplish, as its typing leaves it open to many common moves, such as Earthquake, Close Combat, and Hidden Power Ground. Its EVs can be switched from Special Defense to Defense depending on the team, but Bastiodon's Defense is much more exploitable due to its typing. If Toxic damage is really important to the team, Protect can be used instead of Magic Coat to rack it up, gain Leftovers recovery, and scout for Pokemon with Trick or with super effective coverage. Metal Burst can also be used in place of Magic Coat for decent damage, but Magic Coat will generally provide more utility to the team as Protect is only a safe option and Metal Burst is situational at best.

Because of Bastiodon's lack of reliable recovery, Wish support is recommended to keep it alive. Alomomola is a good partner, as it can take Water-type attacks aimed at Bastiodon. Misdreavus also patches up both of Bastiodon's 4x weaknesses with its immunity to Fighting- and Ground-type attacks; Misdreavus is also one of the tier's best spinblockers and can help ensure Bastiodon's phazing deals optimal damage. Bastiodon also covers Misdreavus's weaknesses to Dark- and Ghost-type attacks, so they have great synergy with each other. As Spikes and Toxic Spikes support is necessary for a stall team, physically defensive Scolipede is an excellent partner for Bastiodon, being able to take the Fighting- and Ground-type attacks headed towards it better than Roselia and Garbodor.

[Other Options]

While it's blessed with an extensive movepool, Bastiodon fails to use almost any of it effectively. Rock Blast could fit into a slot, but it could only really hit Ninjask and break Haunter's Substitutes, and Bastiodon can safely Roar them out anyway. Its special movepool is marvelous, as it contains Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Flash Cannon, but none of these attacks will do close to satisfactory damage unless super effective. A Curse set is plausible with Rock Blast and Avalanche, but it would need many boosts to do significant damage. Bastiodon can also learn Taunt, but it is too slow for it to be effective.

[Checks and Counters]

Because of its typing, Bastiodon can be defeated by almost any Ground- or Fighting-type attack, so it is threatened out by the likes of Sawk, Primeape, Golurk, Pinsir, and Golem, all of which are common. Marowak deserves a special mention, as it can bypass Sturdy and OHKO with Bonemerang; any Pokemon with Mold Breaker, such as Sawk, Rampardos, and Fraxure, can also bypass Sturdy and KO Bastiodon. Water-type Pokemon such as Samurott and Ludicolo can also hit Bastiodon super effectively, but Bastiodon can usually survive one hit and phaze them out. In addition, any residual damage, such as entry hazards and burns, will wear down Bastiodon quickly because it can't heal itself reliably.

[Overview]
 • Wields the rare Steel-typing of NU
 • No offensive presence
 • Weak to the most common attack types of NU/ 4X weak to Ground/Fighting
 • Good ONLY on super Stall teams by patching up weaknesses/phasing
 • No reliable recovery
 • Role: Reliable bulky phaser with Stealth Rocks as a bonus
[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Roar
move 3: Magic Coat
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Sturdy
nature: Careful
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpDef

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Walls a bunch of stuff depending on coverage moves.
 • Primarily phases so needs hazards
 • Magic Coat for Taunt/other annoyances
 • Sturdy guarantees Stealth Rocks at beginning, but you shouldn't lead with Bastiodon or it will die
 • Liepard counter O_O
 • Toxic is main source of damage, good for particularly walls with Regenerator (Alomomola and Audino) that take minimal phasing damage
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Needs Wish support (Alomomola Audino)
 • Misdreavus is a great partner as it is immune to Bastiodon's 4X weaknesses and Bastiodon resists Misdreavus' Dark, and Ghost weaknesses. Misdreavus also spinblocks!
 • Spikes and Toxic Spikes are needed so phasing has a purpose. Good users are Roselia, Garbodor, and Scolipede, but they all cannot take Ground-type attacks well so make sure to compensate for this stacking of weakness.
 • In place of Magic Coat, Bastiodon can also use Protect to rack up poison damage and scout for super-effective moves, or use Metal Burst which can deal some serious damage. It's decent, but Bastiodon doesn't have the room for it.
 • Need partner to fill the Water weakness (Alomomola who can also pass Wishes)
 • Sturdy is better than Soundproof for the situational longevity
[Other Options]
 • Incredible special movepool but terrible Special Attack stat
 • Utility moves such as Torment and Block but they are counter productive to Bastidon's purpose of phasing
 • A curse set is optional but it will need a lot of boosts to deal damage/take a super-effective hit
 • The evs can be switched to Def if you are lacking there, but most of its weaknesses are physical types so it won't work out very well most of the time
 • Rock Blast can be used instead of Magic Coat for breaking Haunter's substitutes, Ninjasks, and ensuring it is not complete Taunt bait
[Checks and Counters]
 • A Fighting-type attack (Sawk Primeape Pinsir Gurdurr )
 • A Ground-type attack (Golurk Golem Marowak Kangaskhan)
 • Both Ground and Fighting-types must be careful of Metal Burst sets.
 • Water types to an extent (Samurott Gorebyss) but Bastiodon can live most attacks and phase them back out.
 • Hazards on your side of the field will quickly wear down Bastiodon as he lacks proper recovery and will switch in a lot
 • Rapid Spinners (Wartortle Torkoal Armaldo) defeat Bastiodons purpose in life.

I'm at work, so I can't fully look at this, but mention Protect in AC as a possible option over Magic Coat in order to stall out Toxic turns, gain HP from Lefties, and scout Choiced Pokes. Mention that it is less situational than Magic Coat (and Rock Blast?), but it doesn't provide as good a benefit either (which is why its not a main move).

[Overview]
Remove the first and the fourth lines in the Overview; also remove everything that comes after stall teams in the second to last line. Replace them by talking about Bastiodon's role in the metagame: being a great asset to stall by having a combination of bulk, access to Stealth Rock, and phasing abilities.

[SET]
Remove Rock Blast from the main set and throw it in AC instead, saying how it's only useful for Substitute variants of Haunter.

[SET COMMENTS]
Toxic is basically Bastiodon's main form of damage outside. Of pain with hazards and should be mentioned when you talk about Toxic in Set Comments. Even then Toxic is actually mainly for Musharna than anything else as Bastiodon's typing means it can Toxic Musharna without being afraid of Synchronize while still walling it and even being able to Roar it out if it's a CM Pass variant.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
Add Alomomola and Audino as examples of Wish partners for Bastiodon's in AC. Add Garbodor, Scolipede, and Roselia as Spikes and Toxic Spikes partners in AC (mainly the first two for TSpikes; Roselia likes its recovery and dual STABS)

Stall doesnt have room for another Stealth Rock Pokemon, so remove mention of that and just talk about Metal Burst being decent, but how Bastiodon's doesn't have room for it.

[Other Options]
Remove mentions of Avalanche, Stone Edge, and Swagger for here.

[Checks and Counters]
In general just add more things here.

Implement everything and I'll stamp it later.

You still need to add Bastiodon's role in the metagame to the Overview, which I said in my previous check.

Looking back at it, I think that Rock Blast is more of an Other Options mention as there is never a stall team I would rather have Rock Blast on Bastiodon than any of its other moves. Remove mention of it in both Set Comments and Additional Comments and add it to OO instead. Make sure to emphasize that it is literally only for Substitute Haunter as it already has Magic Coat to deal with Taunt and doesn't have any moveslots to spare.

Kangaskhan is mainly an Earthquake user than a Drain Punch user so this should be shown in C&C when you talk about Fighting and Ground moves that hit Bastiodon.

Merge the first two sentences in the Overview together (first would be fluff otherwise).

[Set Comments]
The last sentenceabout being a great counter to certain Prankster users should go near the beginning of Set Comments because it provides a good reason for using Bastiodon. The Sturdy mention should also be moved to AC, since its really Bastiodon's only good option (lol Soundproof).

[Additional Comments]
Protect is a "safe" move; rather, it should say that Protect and Metal Burst don't provide as much utility as Magic Coat most of the time. Also, Protect scouts Choiced Pokes, which is one of its main selling points against something like Mold Breaker Sawk (especially cool when they use Ice Punch predicting a switch and you Protect scout that and force them out, but this isn't something to put in the analyses ofc).

[Other Options]
First off, I think you mean that the EVs can be moved from SPECIAL Defense to Defense. Taunt also deserves a mention, but add that it is too slow to really use it well.

Do all of this and

Overview doesn't properly convey Bastiodon's role in the metagame. Really the first sentence of the Overview should be just that; saying that its combination of bulk, Stealth Rock, and phazing is makes it good on stall teams. From then on start talking about its cons. Instead of combining the first two sentences, just remove both of them. Have Bastiodon's role as the first sentence and go from there; reworking the following sentence to make more sense with the context. The second sentence can talk about the pro and cons of its typing. You can remove the second to last sentence in that case as it will be replaced by the first. The last sentence is kind of fillerish as well. Something like this would be good to start off:

Bastiodon's combination of bulk, access to Stealth Rock, and ability to phaze with Roar give it a niche as a great support Pokemon on defensive teams. Its typing is a mixed bag, giving it terrible weaknesses to common Fighting- and Ground-type attacks, but also allowing it to take on Pokemon such as Musharna, Jynx, Serperior, and Skuntank. Bastiodon has no offensive presence or reliable recovery moves and has to rely on support such as Spikes and Wish to make up for it. With these limitations, Bastiodon's viability on anything other than defensive teams is entirely nonexistent.

More things can be added to it, but this is a rough outline of what I'm looking for. You can just use what I have if you want, feel free to add anything else you feel necessary. I feel like the mention of Spikes is a little ambiguous, so fixing that part up to imply that Spikes are for hazard shuffling with Roar would be good.

Make sure you change the title to [Copyediting].

Anyways, amcheck! I honestly did not change much, and the only major thing I changed was in the AC; the order of which you described things were literally all over the place. Usually, the first sentence lists the optional moves and the EVs, then the second sentence lists the partners, so if that AC looks funky, my apologies in advance. :<

Bastiodon will need multiple entry hazards up so its phazing has a significant purpose.
Because of its typing, Bastiodon can be defeated by almost any Ground Ground- or Fighting-type attack, so it it is threatened out by the common likes of Sawk, Primeape, Golurk, Pinsir, and Golem (add comma) all of which are common. Marowak deserves a special mention as it can bypass Sturdy and OHKO with Bonemerang; any Pokemon with Mold Breaker (add comma) such as Sawk, Rampardos, and Fraxure, can also bypass Sturdy and KO Bastiodon, such as Sawk, Rampardos, or Fraxure. Water-type Pokemon such as Samurott and Ludicolo can also hit Bastiodon super-effectively super effectively, but Bastiodon can usually survive one hit and phaze them back out. In addition, any residual damage, such as entry hazards and burns, will wear down Bastiodon quickly because it can't heal itself reliably.

[Overview]

Wielding massive defensive stats, a typing withat gives it a bunch of nifty resistances, and the ability to set up Stealth Rock and phaze with Roar, Bastiodon has a solid niche on defensive teams. However, its rare Steel(space)typing is sadly hindered by its additional Rock typing, giving it many exploitable weaknesses, including two 4x ones to very common offensive types in the tier, Fighting and Ground (A little subjective here, but I think it's pretty important to mention this.).

Magic Coat will bounce back Taunt or harmful statuses, ensuring Bastiodon's longevity; it can also reflect any incoming Spikes or Toxic Spikes, saving the team time for setting up. One of Bastiodon's redeeming qualities is its treasured ability to safely counter the antics of Pokemon with the Prankster ability, such as Swagger and Foul Play Liepard and Copycat and Roar Riolu, as Magic Coat has a higher priority than whatheir Prankster boostedgives their moves (Some people might misinterpret Prankster into thinking it gives moves a power boost.). Once enough entry hazards are on the opponent's side of the field, Bastiodon will begin phazing with Roar, racking up as much damage as possible. Toxic is in the last slot, (RC) as it is the only significant direct source of damage Bastiodon can offer, and it can neuter some important Pokemon such as Alomomola and Audino who have the Regenerator ability which minimizes entry hazard damage.

Its EVs can be switched from Special Defense to Defense depending on the team, but Bastiodon's physical dDefense is are much more exploitable due to its typing.

Alomomola is a good partner, as it can take the super effective Water-type attacks aimed at Bastiodon. Misdreavus also patches up manyboth of Bastiodon's 4x weaknesses with its immunity to Fighting- and Ground-type attacks, both of Bastiodon's 4x weaknesses; Misdreavus is also one of the tier's best spinblockers and can help ensure Bastiodon's phazing deals optimal damage as a result.

Its special movepool is marvelous with, (AC) as it contains Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Flash Cannon, but none of these attacks will do close to satisfactory damage unless super effective. A Curse set is plausible / an option with Rock Blast and Avalanche, but it would need many boosts to do significant damage. Bastiodon can also learn Taunt, but it is too slow for it to be effective.

Just some nitpicks.

However, its rare Steel typing is sadly hindered by its additional Rock typing, giving it many exploitable weaknesses, including two 4x ones to very common offensive types in the tier, Fighting and Ground.
I feel like you should say here that its Steel typing is a blessing because of its very useful resistances to Ice- and Psychic-types and that it's not just "rare." But, like you said, this blessing is hindered with its Rock typing. Perhaps you can say: "However, despite it being blessed with the rare Steel typing, it is sadly hindered..." It seems a little more fitting because being part Steel in NU is a major boon for Bastiodon. Furthermore, I believe there should be a colon after "tier" because its used for the reader to focus their attention on what's to follow and you're introducing a list.

Magic Coat will bounce back Taunt or harmful statuses, ensuring Bastiodon's longevity; it can also reflect any incoming Spikes or Toxic Spikes, saving the team time for setting up.
It's not that you're saving time for yourself because you have to put out less hazards, it's the fact that the opponent is prevented from getting them up himself for the time being, which is an enormous benefit for any stall team. You should probably mention this because it's pretty important and what makes Magic Coat a great move.

One of Bastiodon's redeeming qualities is its treasured ability to safely counter the antics of Pokemon with the Prankster ability, such as Swagger and Foul Play Liepard and Copycat and Roar Riolu, as Magic Coat has a higher priority than what Prankster gives their moves
Instead of saying Foul Play, I'd put Thunder Wave or Encore here. Foul Play doesn't get boosted by Prankster which you're making it seem like it is with the last sentence. You don't need to mention it because Magic Coat doesn't even do anything about it.

Once enough entry hazards are on the opponent's side of the field, Bastiodon will begin phazing with Roar, racking up as much damage as possible.
I'd rather say "can" here instead of "will."

Toxic is in the last slot as it is the only significant direct source of damage Bastiodon can offer, and it can neuter some important Pokemon such as Alomomola and Audino who have the Regenerator ability which minimizes entry hazard damage.
Toxic isn't a direct source of damage. Remove it and keep it as significant source of damage. Also, the bolded sentence is kind of wordy and unpleasant to read, but that's just my look on it.

Its special movepool is marvelous. as it contains Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Flash Cannon, but none of these attacks will do close to satisfactory damage unless super effective.
A comma after marvelous.

Steel-type pokemon are rare and that i was going for. I should hope to think that the readers can know how the types work. and a colon could work too thanks.

but you do save time in setting up because you are free to do whatever you want while the opponent lays down their hazards that you bounced back

Swagger and Foul Play Liepard is the nuisance that Bastiodon beats. I means that Bastiodon can beat those two moves in conjunction because of its bad attack and resistances. Does that make sense?

I'd rather say "can" here instead of "will."
K sounds good thanks

K i added a comma to single out the extra information hopefully that helps

A comma after marvelous.
whoa nice catch thanks

I know, I'm not telling you to remove that. I'm just saying Steel is a very good typing, something that wasn't brought up, and the reader should understand that. Everything else is perfect, I just felt like adding how good Steel is would be beneficial. All you say is that it's rare which doesn't really mean anything to be honest... What I suggested still includes the rarity that Steel is but also brings up how good it is and how that it paired with Rock gives Bastiodon the 4x weakness to Fighting and Ground like you said. That's all.

but you do save time in setting up because you are free to do whatever you want while the opponent lays down their hazards that you bounced back
Again, I know this. I'm not telling you to remove it. I wanted you to add that it prevents the opposition from having hazards on the field when you do, giving you the instant upper-hand.

Swagger and Foul Play Liepard is the nuisance that Bastiodon beats. I means that Bastiodon can beat those two moves in conjunction because of its bad attack and resistances. Does that make sense?
I think you're misunderstanding a lot of what I'm bringing up. Bastiodon destroys Liepard, that makes sense to me, but it beats it because of Magic Coat. You don't have to say Swagger + Foul Play Liepard because the way you have it written kind of suggests Magic Coat does something against Foul Play, but it doesn't. The reasoning for having either Thunder Wave or Encore instead of Foul Play is to demonstrate how Magic Coat can completely nullify entire strategies that some Pokemon rely on. Foul Play is just unnecessarily mentioned and obvious that it doesn't hurt Bastiodon significantly.
