[Overview]
  • typing is very much a mixed bag
  • 4x weak to fighting and ground
  • nu has far fewer fighting-types
  • faces competition from klinklang, rhydon, regirock etc
  • poor offensive stats
  • any decently powerful fighting or ground type move will be the end of it
  • other than that, steel a good defensive typing, many resistances
  • immense support movepool
  • play to its strengths and it'll be a powerful supportive / stalling force

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Roar
move 3: Toxic / Protect
move 4: Stone Edge / Iron Head
item: Leftovers
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
  • immense utility thanks to wide support movepool
  • good defenses lets it provide reliable support
  • hazards, phazing, status, stalling
  • third moveslot depends really on whether your team has toxic spikes support
  • an attack so it isn't total taunt bait; stab stone edge is its strongest

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • EVs balance defenses
  • may want to give it some atk evs as base 52 attack kinda sorta fails
  • rock slide, but see above
  • taunt of its own to prevent sweepers from boosting and walls from recovering
  • but it's slow and is itself taunt bait
  • rest can be used with a cleric
  • weezing has great synergy with bastiodon, and easily stops torterra and sawk
  • altaria, miltank, gardevoir, lanturn, roselia can all provide cleric support
  • the last can lay spikes and toxic spikes too; another option is scolipede
  • alternatively, wish support: alomomola, gardevoir

[SET]
name: Metal Burst
move 1: Metal Burst
move 2: Roar
move 3: Toxic / Taunt
move 4: Stealth Rock / Stone Edge
item: Leftovers
nature: Sassy
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
ivs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
  • metal burst and sturdy combine perfectly
  • rest of the moveslots are variable - suit your team
  • it can choose from status / phazing / entry hazard support
  • taunt to prevent being taunted itself
  • it's horribly slow though so you'll need to predict
  • alternatively, an attack can be run just in case
  • again, stab stone edge is the strongest

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • lowest speed possible to ensure opponent attacks first so you can retaliate with metal burst
  • forgo support move for earthquake for edgequake attacking combination
  • rapid spin support
  • cryogonal, torkoal share weaknesses with bastiodon but are otherwise fairly reliable
  • wartortle is a good choice too
  • this set surprises and takes out ground and fighting type attackers, so pokemon who appreciate them removed work well
  • curse miltank, curse regirock etc

[Other Options]
  • torment + toxic or tspikes support
  • block + toxic stall with sub/ protect but it has no recovery
  • plus it'll usually end up trapping a fighting or ground attacker
  • counter but metal burst is better
  • huge special movepool including boltbeam, flamethrower and their more powerful equivalents, ancientpower and flash cannon
  • but spatk is unusable
  • rock blast to break subs against the likes of kadabra, haunter, glaceon, rotom-f
  • but it's slow and needs to watch out for hp ground / fighting
  • it'll also do a pittance to klinklang, magneton, mesprit and gorebyss etc
  • smack down / rock tomb / heavy slam
  • rock polish but its atk needs help as well
  • curse is its only way of boosting atk - monoattacking boosting set might be viable after certain threats are removed
  • however it doesn't receive gyro ball
  • iron defense
  • screech / metal sound force switches
  • swagger

[Checks and Counters]
  • bulky fighting or ground attackers: sawk, torterra, quagsire, rhydon, even pinsir
  • dugtrio traps and outspeeds
  • most physical walls shouldn't have a problem with it even if they are hit super effectively by stone edge
  • klinklang and magneton are immune to toxic spikes but should be wary of setting up only to be roared out
  • just keep hitting away at it and capitalize on its lack of recovery

Metal Burst is worth a set imo, I'm not sure exactly how it would look, but I do think it's deserving of a set.

scrappy as ability? will edit in more

(also, metal burst is probably the only thing this should be doing tbh)

EDIT: since this thing really kind of sucks

metal burst/sr/toxic/roar is probably best. metal burst is, sadly, the best it can do. iron head off of its awful attack is, well, awful. shame it doesn't learn gyro ball.

lol I kinda hit post too early - I'm still writing the DW section and haven't proofread it (sorry for Scrappy >___>)

I've actually tested Metal Burst / Taunt / Rock Slide / Earthquake (I guess SR could work here too) but I didn't think it could really abuse Metal Burst enough to be worth a set, unlike, say, Endeavor Aggron.

IMO the point is not to abuse it, but rather to make use of it as an attack that won't suck.

Have you tried any sort of Curse set? I feel like it could work pretty well, something like rest/curse/rock slide/earthquake @ chesto berry or leftovers. If nobody has tried it I'll try to find time in between exams.

@Tennisace
That set would would require alot of team support as all opposing pokemon with ground or fighting moves must be eliminated before the set can even attempt to sweep. That basically means that the whole team must be dedicated towards a Bastiodon sweep, I think an oo mention would be best for the curse set

and what sweeper (well except for the best ones) doesn't need this? I mean, any sweeper needs to have his counters removed lol.

And after 1 curse, bastiodon takes non-stabed/boosted fighting and ground attacks like a boss, it has 168 base deffense

Curse is OO material really - there are better Cursers that are much more difficult to 1-2HKO, like Regirock and Miltank. There are just far too many common things that beat it.
