baton stall

I was looking online for a baton pass team that i could suit to my needs, but as I was looking I realized that there were nearly no baton pass teams that use defense boosts. I then encountered a mew that used amnesia, barrier, and baton pass and this spurred me to make this team.

[pimg]151[/pimg]
Mew @ Leftovers Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Barrier
- Amnesia
- Roost
my lead against anything other than taunt/dark types. after using amnesia or barrier, mew will almost always take under 53% damage per hit, which is the max he can take without risking dying the next turn.

[pimg]291[/pimg]
Ninjask (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Speed Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Protect
- Baton Pass
- Swords Dance
ninjask is the standard sub/protect speed boost stall, after aqua ring/ingrain he can easily stall for 32 turns if needed. also, if used after mew sets up completely, his substitutes will often not be broken by the first attack, and he can then use them for a free swords dance or baton pass.

[pimg]286[/pimg]
Breloom (F) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 202 SDef / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Focus Punch/Brick Break
- Seed Bomb
- Brick Break/Rock slide/Thunderpunch

Breloom is my recipient. after ingrain+aqua ring he can use a substitute every turn and not lose any health. This sets lack of coverage is not a problem with +6 attack.

[pimg]134[/pimg]
Vaporeon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Wish
- Baton Pass
- Roar
I use Vaporeon for substitute and wish passing. his substitutes are huge and almost always offer a free turn. if there are spikes/stealth rock on the field, i use sub, wish, then baton pass so Smeargle can get in without a broken focus sash. roar is to phaze things like dragon dance dragonite who will outspeed you after 5 boosts

[pimg]235[/pimg]
Smeargle (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Own Tempo
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Baton Pass
- Ingrain
- Spore
- Aqua Ring
Smeargle is used to pass ingrain and aqua ring. he is usually passed a substitute and will often, if not always be able to set up both with one. do note that spore dosen't work on substitutes, so be sure to hit those with espeon first.

[pimg]196[/pimg]
Espeon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Stored Power
- Substitute
- Work Up
Espeon is my switch if for taunt/entry hazard leads. I do not use him as a lead because then the opponent will be smart and not use them, instead I have Ninjask or mew switch out to her. Espeon is also my primary sweeper, being able to OHKO everything except dark types with the right boosts. if he begins to get whittled down i will baton pass to Vaporeon, who will then pass a sub to Breloom.

weaknesses:

priority
this kills ninjask as well as whittling down the rest of your team, after mew sets up it isnt a problem.

entry hazards
blocked by Espeon, but do hurt if they get through, as i have no rapid spinner. mostly ignore them unless you can get a good prediction and BP to Espeon

taunt
for taunt leads i just switch to Espeon, then to Mew, if it is a dark type then i will use Vaporeon to pass a sub to Ninjask, and then proceed to set up

perish song
i hate perish song, but it is only seen on Politoed in OU. Breloom 2HKO's with seed bomb. if needed, attempt to set up again.

multi hit attacks
annoying if used early, after mew sets up you are fine.

roar/whirlwind
these are generally easily predicted. baton pass to Espeon and continue setting up

tips
dont send smeargle in without a sub up, and dont send him in when the opponent has one up.

after aqua ring or ingrain, ninjask can stall for 32 turns against anything except priority users.

if mew cant get all his defensive boosts at once, pass him a substitute and wish with vaporeon.

other options:
if you want to make this a true stall add tropius:

[pimg]357[/pimg]
Tropius (M) @ Leppa Berry
Trait: Harvest
EVs: 244 HP / 14 Def / 252 Spd
Hardy Nature
- Protect
- Substitute
- Silver Wind
- Toxic

magic HP number for aqua ring and ingrain, which are the only absolutely necessary passes. toxic is for stalling everything except steel types.
+6 speed can be very helpful, allowing tropius to outspeed anything that is unboosted

ideas, thoughts, changes and improvements are welcome.

bump

bump.
I have waited two days, and still no replies. if there is something that is wrong with the way i presented it please tell me, as i cannot fix it if i dont know what the problem is.

Send vm's with a link to the RMT to some experienced raters, i really dont know baton pass or stall so i cant give a good rate, sorry

Baton pass is good for any team unprepared for it. Any team that has the slightest preparation for it can pretty much dismantle it. Looks to be quite the annoying team to face if you get the chance to set up, though. I think I faced this team the other day, but my hyper offense pretty much owned it. You already know the weaknesses, as you stated. Unfortunately, getting set up as you suggest is easier said than done.

But yeah, basically if the opponent doesn't have counter measures for BP teams, I think you'll come out on top.

Lavos, many of your "rates" are horribly negative comments.

Regardless, bobknows, he's right. Fortunately, Haze is an incredibly rare move with low distribution and even lower usage. Heck, I don't think there is a single set on Smogon that advocates the use of Haze. Fortunately, there is a simple fix for this - remove Aqua Ring on Smeargle for Taunt. You really don't need Aqua Ring when you have Ingrain, and Taunt not only shuts down Haze but any boosting move the opponent might use in an attempt to overpower you.

Funny team, I like both stall team and baton pass, I must give an advice. I have many ideas, obviously you shouldn't follow all of them, they are just different ways to fix some weaknesses.

First of all, you have only two pokemons that can dammage the opponent, I think it's really not enough. An unpredicted taunter (such as some Gyarados), or any taunter able to hit Espeon hard will ruin your team. You especially have nothing to deal with defensive Foul play Sableye. You also lack coverage : for example, nothing to hit Lati@s with even neutral damage if you don't use Stone Edge.
Different ways to fix that : X-scissor on Ninjask instead of protect, Scald on Vaporeon, or maybe ice beam on Mew...

I suggest Quiver dance > Aqua ring on Smeargle. It's one of the best boosting move, Smeargle appreciate a speed boost for a safer baton pass. Smeargle is just too frail to set up Ingrain + Aqua ring and then using baton pass before dying.

I think that Mew is too important : nothing else to nab defensive boosts if he dies, not good for a stall team that definitely needs them. You could think of acid armour on Vaporeon to share the tasks.

I'm not sure Breloom is the best recipient for your team. If you don't use spore, as Smeargle already has it, you lose the best reason to use it.
What about Scrafty ? A really good bulk even with few boosts, excellent coverage with only two stabs, only two weaknesses (5 for Breloom), good recocery with Drain Punch, access two dragon tail if you want to be able to phaze, Bulk up if you want to use it before getting all the boosts, and the wonderful Shed Skin to deal with statuses... I think he would really fit well in your team.

Another idea to replace Breloom : Gliscor is really good in Baton Stall. A nice partner for Vaporeon (cover the other's weaknesses, except grass which is well resisted by Ninjask). He is also a status absorber, bulkier, can use baton pass (6 baton passer is just really nice), set up rock polish or sword dance... He is also really good to deal with most physical dragons, if you give him ice fang (2KO offensive Dragonite with a very few investment in Attack).

You should also put taunt somewhere, it's often useful. Ninjask, Mew or Gliscor can use it efficiently.

Good luck with your team, and sorry to criticize so much. Hope I helped.

I think Haxorus would be a better fit on your team than Breloom. For one thing, Haxorus can still do decent damage even if the Baton Pass fails. Then, because Breloom doesn't have Spore, it's useless against anything slower that it can't kill in 2 hits. Haxorus on the other hand could set up if you need it to or just outright abuse the power you give to it:

Haxorus @ Life Orb/Dragon Gem
4 HP | 252 Atk | 252 Spe | Jolly Nature
~ Outrage
~ Earthquake
~ Brick Break
~ Dragon Claw/Dragon Dance

In case the Baton Pass fails, Haxorus can pull up a chance with Dragon Dance and unleash a lethal Outrage boosted by either Life Orb or Dragon Gem for enormous power.

i have noticed, after a few more games that i seem to be sweeping with espeon more than breloom, i am not getting offensive boosts reliably, and that smeargle isnt often getting both aqua ring and ingrain. this, along with your suggestions led me to these changes:

vaporeon
acid armor > wish
reason: i have never found a reason to use wish other than to let smeargle come in a second time, which is now going to be fixed. also splits up my boosts, allowing for a better chance to set up if one pokemon is ko'ed

mew
ice beam > barrier
suggested by smilodon, as vaporeon can now set up defense boosts, i have room for an attack on mew.

smeargle
shell smash > aqua ring
shell smash allows me to get a jump on offensive boosts, and dosen't make that much of a difference at +6 defense. after i use ingrain, i shell smash once or twice if they havent woken up.
note: smeargle should always come after ninjask so that he can be BP'ed a sub, not have his sash broken, and boost until they wake up so he baton passes away at 1 hp.

I have not tried out gliscor yet, but he looks like a great idea. he has defensive bulk, something this set lacks, as well as having poison heal to deal with status.

also, i have been running into things that try and set up on ninjask, I do not use any entry hazards, so would defog > swords dance be a good option?

Defog clears pretty much everything from the opponent's side of the field. This includes Screens and all hazards. Unfortunately, using Defog doesn't clear hazards from your side of the field.
