Battle Spot - Simple Questions and Answers

I think you're talking about Power Trick (which switches the Defense stat with the Attack stat) and not Power Split (which averages your offenses with the opponents). They are both rather poor strategies because Shuckle's defenses are all that it going for it. Remember that Shuckle has 20 base HP and 5 base Speed - if you take away its defenses, it's going to be an incredibly fragile Pokemon that is incredibly slow and will likely be KO'd quickly before it can do anything. Sure, it has Sturdy, but that's not quite a point in its favor. Shuckle doesn't have the greatest of offensive movepools either.

If you want a monstrous Rock-type sweeper, DD Mega Tar offers more power (355 Atk at +1 vs. Shuckle's 310 with Power Trick assuming Adamant and 252 Atk) after a turn of setup with much, much less risk. In general, Shuckle should stick to Infestation + Sticky Web, maybe Toxic, but in most cases I don't recommend using Shuckle.
ok, that makes sense, i try to use shuckle as toxic staller, but Ill try Mega Tar. Shanks Chu Berry Mush

Ok, so since we don't have analyses as of right now (unless I'm mistaken), I would request a good Mega Scizor set. I'm trying to make a team with it to be that guy who uses his favorite mega where it's outclassed creative. Currently using the Bulky SD sweeper set in the OU analysis, with Bug Bite instead of Knock Off, but I'm wondering if there is a more optimal set for Battle Spot. Thanks!

Mega Scizor with pre-gen 6 moves isn't that bad, lol. You resist Mega Kanga's STAB, destroy many fairy types, have a relatively good matchup against mega mawile (unless it carries fire fang), and have the surprise factor, since people won't know what to expect from your scizor, especially if you have a 2nd potential mega on your team.

The best place to start looking for info on a pokemon you want to use is here, and then click on the tab for the format you're interested in. If your pokemon isn't in the top 12, you can click on the "choose a pokemon" button to search for the one you're looking for.

Here's a screenshot of sample information you can get here:

Scizor PGL Data.png

Based on this, I can tell that scizor has about a 50-50 chance of mega evolving (so ~ to the surprise factor), most of them (87.7%) are adamant, and you've got some choice on which specific moves are popular to run, besides bullet punch. Though u-turn is more popular than bug bite (65.4% vs 9.7%), if you're going to set up a swords dance, you want to keep bug bite, which also lets you snipe your opponent's sitrus berry. If you switch to a roost set, maybe trying u-turn would be fun for switch initiative. Dunno if I'd recommend using both SD and roost on the same set, simply because battle spot is a much faster paced meta than OU, and you'll likely not have time/opportunity to use both. Otherwise, I'd recommend knock off or superpower for the coverage attack. Something like:

Scizor @ scizorite
Technician
- Swords Dance / Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Bug Bite / U-turn
- Knock Off / Superpower

EDIT: cleaning it up a lot, lol.

I know I already got a Scizor from you (who is already doing great work in the Battle Spot, by the way), but since I don't have access to the X Mega Stones, I'd really like one of those Manectrics if it comes with the stone.

:)

Thanks for the feedback! That site is looking REALLY helpful, I'll be using that a lot. I'll likely try both a defensive set w/ U-Turn and an offensive set w/ SD to see which fares better. Guess Roost and SD have to duke it out in the movepool n_n. Anyway, thanks for the site, that helps a lot! ^_^

Glad to hear that scizor is working for you! You're actually exactly the kind of person that I want to give pokemon to through this distribution, since you're actually using the pokemon competitively. The eligibility rules are mostly there to discourage moochers who don't actually want to play and contribute.

Anyways, about manectric: mega stones can't be sent through GTS, so we'll have to do a direct trade. I've added the FC you posted on the FC thread, mine is in my sig (or also on the FC thread). We can discuss the details in PM or you can post on my profile, whichever makes you most comfortable.

Please remember that the data available there is live usage data based on the on cart battle spot. Since you're playing primarily on sim, you might run into a different collection of pokemon and sets. Anyways, glad I was able to help, and good luck! :)

All: What would you use for a Mandibuzz set on the Battle Spot? I'm thinking this:

Mandibuzz @ Rocky Helmet (Lefties not available)
252 HP / 4 Atk / 132 Def / 116 SDef / 4 Spe
Ability: Overcoat
Impish Nature
- Knock Off
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Brave Bird?

Maybe the EVs are a bit over the place, but the defenses are threshold numbers. Maybe there's a better split between the two, and since M-Kanga is everywhere, I might need some more defense, Jolly Kanga stands a 34,4% chance to 2HKO, meaning I won't have time to Roost if I switch into Return.

Thinking about building a team with Carbink as support in BattleSpot Doubles ladder. Fell in love with it after farming it for over 3 hours :P
Anyone got any ideas of how to make it as useful as possible? :)

Carbink's main (and only) niche in Doubles is for setting Trick Room, and even then it's fairly outclassed by Aromatisse as a Fairy-type TR setter. It does have a few defining qualities in Dual Screens, Clear Body, superior defenses and Explosion, however. Try this I guess:

Carbink @ Light Clay/Normal Gem
Relaxed
Clear Body
252 HP/252 Def/4 Sp. Def
-Trick Room
-Explosion
-Light Screen/Protect/Dazzling Gleam
-Reflect/Protect/Dazzling Gleam

Thanks yeah I was thinking about TR, and cause it is rock, maybe try to smuggle in some sandstorm aspects

Yeah, you're using Mandibuzz's best assets pretty well. In the last slot, I would suggest Toxic or Taunt. Taunt can be helpful since Mandibuzz has a fairly good speed tier, Toxic can also be useful on anything with that good defenses. Brave Bird can be a good idea if your team doesn't have a good check to Blaziken and friends, but may not have the same overall utility as the previous two moves do.

Did you just evenly split defenses for those EVs? I haven't used Mandibuzz very much, but I can generally do better with napkin math EVs if I know what kinds of things you'd like Mandibuzz to check but can't because you don't feel like you're investing enough.

So uh, I finally got around to training a Talonflame so what would you guys suggest as a good set for it? It's already 252 Atk 252 Spe. I know Brave Bird and Flare Blitz are givens, maybe Roost and Will-o-Wisp? What about item, Sharp Beak? Rocky Helmet is popular, but does that usually require HP investment?

P.S. if anyone wants 5IV Female Gastly, I have a few to give out. They're in a special ball, I'm not sure what it is called though.

I tried roost a while ago but find it more worth just killing the opponent and yourself then risking that he kills you while using it.
U-turn is pretty good move for reasons.
Steelwing helps against heavy defense rock types and such.
I find Choice atk item, can't remember which one in name, is good as Talonflame works really good as a one hit killer to then just do some damage and then die.
BTW what Ladder? :)

Choice band.

- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz / Overheat (if you've got one with 6IVs)
- U-turn
- Filler (I hear sleep talk is all the rage now, to better counter breloom)

EDIT: steel wing isn't as strong an option, since there are very few things it hits harder than the 2 STABs.

Oh yeah, how could I totally forget about U-turn, derp.

I wanted to use Choice Band but I also wanted to use Roost or Will-O-Wisp which would kinda suck to get locked into. Sleep Talk sounds like it could be good vs Breloom/Venusaur yeah.

Come to think of it, Roost on Choice Band wouldn't be too bad on a predicted switch. In Gen 5 UU, Roost was actually somewhat common on Choice Band Crobat; this would be kind of similar.

My current talonflame in doublespot

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
IV: 31/31/31/01/31/31
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 6 HP
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Steel Wing

I have found not too many predict the Steel Wing so I am getting some good use out of it. ~1700 rating atm

From what I've seen, Will-o-Wisp is a really good idea on Talonflame as it allows you to beat Aegislash a lot more reliably. Most Talonflame vs. Aegislash encounters usually involve Aeg using King's Shield predicting the Flare Blitz: Will-o-Wisp hurts it a lot by cutting it's survivability and lowering the effectiveness of Shadow Sneak and Sacred Sword (and whatever other physical moves it may be using). You're not scared of Substitute because you'll pretty much always be faster. Will-o-Wisp is also a good move to use in general for beating out slower physical attackers, perhaps as a suicide move in the same vein as Tailwind when against threats like Tyranitar. Bulky spreads seem to work well in the meta atm as well, so that's an option to consider. Try something like WoW-BB-Roost-Tailwind/Flare Blitz with a Leftovers. I feel like Choice Band is overprepared for and expected in general, that's my suggestion anyway :p

My reasoning was this: I wanted max HP for sure and I wanted 4 Spe to win the tie with other uninvested Base 80's (mainly other Mandibuzzes, M-Venusaur and Togekiss) and then I wanted to split the rest between the defenses, but with a lean towards Def because of M-Kanga et al. Since putting the last 4 EVs in either Def or SpD won't do anything, I moved it to Atk instead for a just slightly more powerful Knock Off/Brave Bird. I'm sure there's a more effective split out there, but I went with this one and I have a few Reset Bags stored up for chaning these things.

I tried Brave Bird in the last slot, but I can easily see Toxic working as well, and I will test that too when time permitts.. I played a few games last night with the Mandibuzz, both rated and unrated, and didn't drop a single one. So far, the set seems to work just fine :)

Banned deucer.
I've encountered many bulky talonflame sets, and to me its not really worth it. Its still frail, and only does good against physical attackers, but being x4 weak to rock still hinders it. Also, other talonflames are able to outspeed you and ko you. I find banded as the best set, here is what I find in the upper ladder in Battlespot.

Talonflame @ Rocky Helmet/Leftovers
Ability: Gale Wings
IV: 31/31/31/31/31/31
EVs: 252 HP /252 Def / 4 Spe --random defensive ev spread
Adamant/Jolly Nature (I don't really know the nature for Defensive Talonflame)
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz/Overheat/Will-O-Wisp
- U-turn/Tailwind
- Taunt/Roost

it can be quite annoying to stall pokes, but things like garchomp or hippowdon generally carry rock tomb will hurt. (some scarf varients outspeed, and lum varients take the will-o-wisp) as for hippowdown, it just spams rock tomb.

I actually posted asking about contributing analyses a few months back, and the word from upper levels is that C&C is concentrated on overhauling the site dex atm. I'll try to get in touch with the folks in C&C when I finish a few of the things I've wanted to finish in the forums (viability rankings, articles, etc).

The ladder resetting has given me a kick in the pants: I'm finally finishing fine-tuning my doubles team for some dedicated battle spot laddering, and I've finished the EV spreads for all team members except one: rotom wash.

There's a million and one different EV spreads for the washing machine, and I don't want to re-invent the wheel, but most of the ones listed around the internet are specialized for other metagames, and I want make sure my rotom is as optimized as possible for the battle spot metagame.

So, what are some EV spreads you guys have used on battle spot, and where did you get them from? If you designed your spread yourself, can you describe what it's meant to survive / out-speed / KO?

Rotom-W @ Sitrus Berry
Nature: Modest
Ability: Levitate
-Thunderbolt
-Hydro Pump
-Will-o-wisp
-Protect

Thanks! :)

Has anyone bred/trained a Hitmontop before?

I'm looking at creating an Adamant one now and just ... how do I do that, as far as EV training while making sure his stats are equal prior to level 20? The Adamant nature is going to push him toward Hitmonlee, which means as far as I know even just leaving him in the daycare isn't an option, right?
