Battle Spot Teambuilding Discussion & Help Thread (read post #453, page 19)

Hey aniravjain :) Welcome to Smogon! It would be useful to post the EVs of your team so that we can get a better idea of them. If you look at previous posts here you'll see the format that we use to post pokemon sets.
A useful tool that I've found in team building is Break My Team to let you know which pokemon you have trouble with both offensively and defensively (Omastar68 this might be useful for you too). If you're looking to target a specific pokemon then Victim of the Week might give you some ideas. Have a look through all of the entries for that week, not just the winner!
Are you playing on the 3DS or on Showdown? Either way there'll be people who will be happy to help out in Showdown's Battle Spot room. Sorry that I haven't given you any direct advice on your team but I'm sure that after you post EVs someone will be here to help!

Thanks for directing me to that tool. Before you made this post, I'd already decided to use different Pokemon. That said, I've been wondering about one of my Pokemon that has been pretty good in the past, but not quite great.

Smeargle@Choice Scarf
Ability:Own Tempo(Moody would probably be better, but maybe not for this one.)
EVs:252HP/ 4Def/ 252 Spe-I'm guessing these don't matter so much, aside from the speed, of course.
IVs:0 Atk.(I don't know what idiot would use Foul Play on Smeargle, but might as well.)
Timid Nature
-Spore
-Switcheroo
-Parting Shot
-Topsy-Turvy

Hopefully this is pretty self explanatory. Spore is more or less a given on Smeargle. The Choice Scarf is useful not only because you can Switcheroo it to something else, but it allows for a fast Parting Shot. I'm pretty fearful of stat boosters, so I wanted a Topsy-Turvy user(and Smeargle is the only good choice for one.)

Hey! Welcome on battlespot! I see that you really are a newcomer, so first i would like to recommend you some pages where you will learn a lot from! First, i think you will learn a lot from reading the introduction for sixth generation single pokemon battles on this link http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/an-introduction-to-3v3-singles.3494393/ . Then you could read some of the teams some more experienced users uploaded on this page http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/battle-spot-sample-teams.3520502/ so you can see what makes a good singles pokemon team. Then, to see which pokemon are used most and thus are probably the best, look at this statistics page from the official pokemon site itself: http://3ds.pokemon-gl.com/battle/oras/#single .

Hello there, and welcome to Smogon! From your list, it seems as though you have quite a few competitively viable Pokemon. However, a thing you have to make sure of is whether or not they have the right Natures and/or IVs. I'll refer you to this guide: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/696959-pokemon-x/67604326. This will inform you of everything you need to do to breed better Pokemon. You should also check out Pokemon Showdown!, a simulator where you can test out your Battle Spot teams. There's even a Battle Spot chat room, where we talk about the metagame. http://pokemonshowdown.com

To add to the great advice don't forget the WiFi section. There's a 6iv Ditto giveaway from a user called Most. Everyone is happy to help new users too.

Hey there TheHammer123 and welcome to Battle Spot (and Smogon!).

Love the enthusiasm, you should definitely swing past our chat room on Pokemon Showdown! There's always a bunch of us hanging out there and you should have no trouble finding help there.

One piece of advice I'd like to give you is that you shouldn't breed a bunch of random stuff and then try to put a team together consisting of them, you should instead decide what you'd like to use and breed for those accordingly. You can practice with ideas you have on Pokemon Showdown! before you breed, just be aware though that the PS! metagame is a bit different to the actual in-game meta, but it's still a solid way of practicing instead of going into the real thing blind.

If you want to jump straight in now, from your list of already bred/trained Pokemon I would suggest trying out; Greninja, Dragonite, Scizor, Tyranitar, Latias and Gengar. The other Pokemon you listed aren't really good choices in Battle Spot Singles (and Kyogre is banned). I trust these were all bred with perfect IVs in the important stats and with the proper natures, otherwise you'll find that they won't perform as well as you'd like.

There are a few threads you can check out here to help with team ideas, there's an old Sample Teams thread, a Japanese Resources thread, and another with Japanese Team Translations. All these have great examples of teams that you can use to (at least) mild success while you learn about the meta and can then use that knowledge to edit those teams to your needs or create new ones from scratch!

Hey! Im not new to Smogon, but Battle Spot is new to me!

So, i'd love if someone can help me to build a team with Mega Gengar and CB Talonflame.

That's all for now!

Both Mega Gengar and Talonflame are so splashable onto almost any team so it's kinda hard to suggest teammates based on only that.

When we wanna steal teams look at stuff for inspiration we all use this site; it features links to blogs featuring all the top Japanese teams. Doing a quick search for a team with both Mega Gengar and Choice Band Talonflame gave me this team (all the other M-Gengar + TFlame teams use a specially defensive stallbreaker TFlame set). I'll try translating it here:

I Checked the site, i saw a really interesting team with my favourite megas in Maw and Gengar (Uber Megas ftw!)
I'll make sure to try the team you suggested me.

Cool team, and cool site. But why does that Talonflame have Giga Impact? If anything, it should get Sleep Talk or a support move, i.e. WoW. I'm also thinking that you should forego Destiny Bond on the Gengar set for Substitute or Disable. But that's just me. Welcome to Battle Spot tho.

He didnt make the sets, its from a japanese site

Yeah 6tennis that team is a direct translation. I was talking to the guys and the only use we could think of for Giga Impact was against Rotom-W/H. Really though, on a Banded set that fourth moveslot is very rarely used so it's just filler..

As for the Gengar, I suppose using both Protect + Sub would make it easier to stall out the Perish Song turns, but if you drop Sub then you only have to survive one more turn between Protects, and makes it easier to snipe something with Destiny Bond since you'd most likely be left with very low health (meaning you can trade 2:1). I dunno that is just my very rough justification since I agree, if using Perish Song you're best off running both Protect + Sub... I would understand dropping Sub if you were also running either Wobbuffet or Gothitelle since you can switch to them to stall turns, and save Gengar for more Perish Trapping..

Hey so I'm not really sure how this goes since I've never tried to build a competitive pokemon team but I'm trying to build a around Mega Aerodactyl or what I would call a speed based team. A lot of the information will probably be left out simply because I'm not sure what I should be aiming for and I'm very open for suggestions if you think I should use a different pokemon, item, or move feel free to let me know. But here is what I have been thinking so far for a Battle Spot Doubles or triples team.

Pokemon1:
  • Name @ Item: Mega-Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
  • Ability: Tough Claws
  • EVs: Not Sure
  • Nature: Not Sure
  • Moves:
    1. Stone Edge
    2. Tailwind
    3. Wide Guard
    4. Sky Drop
  • Reasoning: Because from what I've read he seems like a very good pokemon that can get in quick and get the job done while having decent defense
Pokemon2:
  • Name @ Item: Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
  • Ability: Regenerator
  • EVs: Not Sure
  • Nature: Not Sure
  • Moves:
    1. Rage Powder
    2. Spore
    3. Giga Drain
    4. Protect
  • Reasoning: I like this pokemon because I currently use it in my team and I feel that it is an amazing tanking pokemon that would be good at keeping the others alive
All the following pokemon are ones I have just thought about but I'm unsure how well they will all fit together.
Pokemon3:
  • Name @ Item: Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
  • Ability: Gale Wings
  • EVs: Not Sure
  • Nature: Not Sure
  • Moves:
    1. Brave Bird
    2. Flare Blitz
    3. Sword Dance
    4. Roost
  • Reasoning: It is a very fast pokemon that, from what I have heard, is apprently very hard hitting and I think might fit with the kind of team I'm aiming for
I'm really not sure what other pokemon I should consider for this team. Please let me know what suggestions y'all have for me. Thanks ahead of time!

Hey everyone! Not new to the competitive scene, but new to Battlespot. I was looking for a suggestion for a third pokemon alongside my physical wall Landorus-T and Special Mega Manectric. Most of my strategy runs with Manectric using Volt Switch into Landorus. Any third pokemon suggestions? Thank you!

I actually happen to be currently using that core myself! I've found Talonflame to be very effective with this core. It rounds out the weaknesses of Manectric + Lando-T pretty well (can't be touched by Ground, is neutral to Ice, Manectric deals with the Water-types, Lando-T with the Electric- and Rock- types), and the three of them together form a nice VoltTurn core. I'll suggest Special Defensive Talonflame to tank special hits that the two can't.

Sounds interesting! What moveset do you run with talon? I assume Gale Wings as well. Also, do you find a lack of damage by using another defensive pokemon?

The specially defensive set that 6tennis is referring to is this:

Talonflame @ Lum Berry
Ability: Gale Wings
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 4 Atk / 44 Def / 188 SpD / 36 Spe
Careful Nature
- Brave Bird
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Roost

I can confirm that it is a cool set and a bunch of us have been trying it out. The Lum Berry helps it beat stall better by taking a status move on the switch or incase its Taunt is too slow, you can also use a Rocky Helmet but that's better suited to a more physically defensive spread (and if you're using a "physical wall" Landorus-T I suspect it might be holding it).

Brave Bird is a lot weaker than the offensively-inclined sets but power isn't the aim of this set. You mostly just use it to pick off stuff that's been whittled down by Burn damage / bopping Mega Blaziken / Breloom. You can also try Acrobatics if you don't like the recoil but it means you need to have your Lum Berry activated or not run one at all...

Other common mutual teammates of M-Manectric + Landog include Suicune, Ferrothorn, and Aegislash.

Thanks! I'll definitely give this a try. Also, what pokemon should one Taunt? It seems counter intuitive to want something to damage you.

Mostly defensive pokemon like Porygon2, cresselia, etc., limiting their recovery and such. Also really nice against aegislash

Can I also ask what you run on Landog and MManectric? Getting the exact IV for HPice seems very difficult and I don't find much need for Stealth Rock on Landog.

Thanks! I'll definitely give this a try. Also, what pokemon should one Taunt? It seems counter intuitive to want something to damage you.

Like NOVED already auggested; Taunt stops foes from healing themselves, boosting their stats so the can fight through your defenses, or crippling you with their own status. Defensive Pokemon (like this Talonflame set) are designed to take hits so that they can use Taunt and tank whatever the foe uses. There's also a bunch of passive Pokemon such as Cresselia, Porygon2 and Ferrothorn that get totally stopped by Taunt

Unfortunately, Hidden Power Ice is mandatory on Manectric. If you're breeding with a hex-flawless Ditto (31/31/31/31/31/31) then just breed until you have an Electrike with perfect HP, SpA, SpD and Spe, then check with the Hidden Power checker to see if it's Ice. Ice requires a 31/even/even/31/31/31 IV spread and is therefore one of the easiest to get. Manectric should run this:

Manectric @ Manectite
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power (Ice)
- Overheat / Flamethrower
- Volt Switch

When using Landog with Manectric it's probably best to use the standard Scarf set rather than a defensive one (especially since you said you don't want Stealth Rock). That looks something like this:

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Rock Slide / Stone Edge
- Knock Off / Superpower

31/e/31/31/31/30 possible too, considering Mane's almost exclusive Speed tier it isn't losing much in the way of speed ties.
