2020 INVITATIONAL

Welcome to the final BSS tournament of the 2020 circuit, where the champion will be crowned with a ribbon
on their profile. The top 12 performing players in this year's circuit will be battling it out to win it all.

Specific Rules
  • This is a Standard SWSH Battle Stadium Singles Tournament.
  • As none of the qualifying tournaments this year were using the post-Crown Tundra format, this tournament will DEFAULT to Series 5 (a.k.a. Crown Tundra Pokemon banned). However, if BOTH players agree, the matches can be played in the post-DLC2 Series 7 format. Note that this restriction will only apply to Pokemon species; the use of new items like Custap berry and previously unavailable hidden abilities are allowed even in the Series 5 format.
  • The tournament will be Best of Five, Single Elimination.
  • Matches MUST be played on the Smogtours server (http://smogtours.psim.us/)
  • Replays must be saved and POSTED. Matches without a replay will not count as completed.
  • In an event of a timeout, the player who times out will lose that game unless the opponent grants a rematch. This holds true even for a disconnect, due to being unable to know which three Pokemon have been selected at team preview. Consequently, players do not need to send in their teams to a TD.
Standard Rules
  • Matches will be played in the Singles format
  • Pokemon above level 50 will be brought down to level 50. Pokemon below level 50 stay as is.
  • Players pick 3 of their 6 Pokemon at team preview.
  • Battle Mark Clause: A Pokemon cannot have a set that can only be obtained from before gen 7. (i.e. no past-gen exclusive move tutors/TMs/events)
  • Species Clause: No two Pokemon in the same team can have the same National Pokedex number.
  • Item Clause: No two Pokemon in the same team can hold the same item.

Round 1

(5) greilmercenary9 vs TectonicDestroyer (12)

(6) Suspensse vs Psynergy (11)

(7) cant say vs Breckinridge (10)

(8) Egor vs DragonWhale (9)

Simulator Glitches: Any battle mechanics not properly implemented in the simulator used for a tournament battle are fair game, unless explicitly banned by that tournament's rules. Illegal movesets that are not restricted by the simulator fall into this category as well. However, this does not include faulty tier scripts; for example, if there was a bug in the BW OU tier script that allowed you to use Drizzle and Swift Swim on the same team, taking advantage of this would result in disqualification in that battle. If a game breaking glitch is discovered, we will make a blanket tournament ban on that glitch via an announcement in the Tournaments forum until it is fixed.

Ghosting: The player in a tournament battle should be the one making their own decisions. Do not tell a player what move to make in a tournament battle (i.e. do not "ghost" them), and do not make your moves based on another person's suggestions. If we are made aware that someone playing a tournament battle is making some of their moves based mainly on the suggestions of someone else, punishments may be handed out to both parties involved.

Identity: Pretending to be another player in relation to a tournament battle is strictly prohibited. Do not try to impersonate or play as another player. This applies to the use of alts as well. Any player who breaks this will be disqualified and may be subject to further punishment.

Rule Breaking: If a player breaks a rule during a battle, they are disqualified from that particular battle. If it was a single battle in a series, they will still have the opportunity to play the rest of the series.

Draws: If a battle ends in a draw in an elimination tournament or another tournament format that is unable to handle draws, there should be a rematch between the players with the option for both players to change teams.

Forfeiting: A player may forfeit their battle during or after the battle, as long as the result has not been confirmed by the host. If a player forfeits before a battle commences in the first round of a tournament, they are eligible for substitution if appropriate. We highly recommend that you do not forfeit your tournament battles just because you got lucky, but we do not enforce this.

Host / Tournament Director Decisions: The host may make a judgment call on the outcome of a battle with a disputed result, even if one player has broken the rules. If you believe the host has made an unjust decision, you may inform the Tournament Director responsible for the tournament of the situation and request that they make a final call on it.

Sportsmanship: If a player displays exceedingly poor sportsmanship before, during, or after a tournament battle, they may be disqualified or otherwise punished.

Deadline for Round 1 is Sunday, November 29, 11:59PM EST

Consequently, players do not need to send in their teams to TD.
Yes yes send your teams to me :D

Anyway, so this thread isn't just ded, predicts!

(5) greilmercenary9 vs TectonicDestroyer (12)

Not even a proper matchup, feel sry for this TD guy and how hard he is going to get beaten

(6) Suspensse vs Psynergy (11)

Suspense has silently impressed me the whole year. He has been very consistent in Gen8 tours as of late. Meanwhile, Psynergy is the old guard who is obviously very good. However, Psy seems to be a bit out of touch with the meta, def old gens being his forte. This match playing out in Series 7 could definitely even out the knowledge gaps between these 2 with it being a completely new meta, but honestly I gotta favour Suspensse here.

(7) cant say vs Breckinridge (10)

God tier bss streamer endless grinder pokemon hunter aussie lad Cant say vs Breckinridge. Breckinridge has def had a consistent year lately, playing pretty well. However, Cant say has edges in pure experience as well as metagame knowledge. Big edge to the Aussie Goat.

(8) Egor vs DragonWhale (9)

By far the tightest game. Egor has shone this gen, putting up solid performances accross the tiers and BSPL. Meanwhile Dragonwhale has also been putting up some solid performances as well. In terms of Gen8 so far, Egor has def impressed, but presuming this is getting played in Series 7, both players are going to be put on an even battleground. Im going to favour DragonWhale here as I personally believe that his playing ability is slightly better, but this is going to be a great series.

Since Bobochan is dead, I shall take his place and do some predicts (mainly because I'm bored).

(5) greilmercenary9 vs TectonicDestroyer (12)

I don't think Greil is as far ahead of the curve as last generation, some of that is others catching up and new blood, other parts is because of the volatility of SWSH is to a new level. Tect is probably not the guy to beat him and doesn't have the SWSH experience Greil has, however is a solid enough BSS player in general and likely has somewhere between a 30-40% of winning. I'll be looking forward to this set the most since it has my tutee finally playing on the biggest stage and surpassing his master.

(6) Suspensse vs Psynergy (11)

I saw the above prediction on this match caused a little upset. Psynergy does seem to play generation 8, but to what extent I honestly do not know since I do not interact with him much so much of my experience has to come from playing these two people and watching matches and that's what I'll be using to predict. My gut says Psynergy would probably win this about 55-60% of the time, just based off looking at Suspensse's master's matches there seems to be a lot of cheese and wonky team compositions and it is harder to pull that off when people actually care.

(7) cant say vs Breckinridge (10)

If this was USUM, I'd be betting on Breckinridge, that being said he has had issues with SWSH and hasn't been as involved lately as before. It makes sense that both these guys best scores in the circuit are in Classic. Cant Say has been playing a bit more SWSH and therefore I expect him to have the advantage, though a lot of it really depends on his team choice and how seriously Breckinridge is taking this, very close though. Cant Say is a bit like me where he likes interesting teams so Ill be looking forward to this set the most asides from the first.

(8) Egor vs DragonWhale (9)

Egor I think is probably one of the better newer people to come into the scene, though this is a different level of tournament. He did very well in Open which was a long time ago and I remember losing to him there and beating Dragonwhale for what its worth, though I'd say I took one of those matches significantly more seriously than the other (BSPL was starting during the Egor match). In this early stage of series 7, Dragonwhale who can actually read Japanese has the advantage since he can go on Twitter or follow Japanese youtubers/streamers and get better teams or even just interesting techs. Id give Dragonwhale the advantage similar to suspensse vs. Psynergy 55-60% of the time.

In a return of "All my Bo5 sets go 5 games" Greil, I somehow pulled out one of the closest sets I've seen in recent memory with a clutch last turn G5 survival from Porygon2. Props to Zaaya, who probably deserved that set way more than I did, but sometimes I guess it's better to have what seems to be divine intervention on your side than to play all that great. Again though, great set to Zaaya, ggs.

Predictions is ultimately just a bit of fun and I was bored at the time.

Invitationals isn't really my thing, hence why I'm not in it. I have all the accolades I want this year. Look forward to seeing the finals regardless and hopefully can see some good games.
