ORAS UU Blast from the Past

I did a lot of battling back on Shoddy in the old DPPt days, but I haven't really played since then. I recently got Omega Ruby and it rekindled my love for competitive battling, so I made a UU team and have been tweaking it a bit. I've played about ~30-40 games with it and am bouncing between 1250-1350 ranking, so it's decent but I know it could be better. I've done a bit of research, but I still don't quite get all the new Pokes, so my team is mostly guys that I was familiar with back then:

THE LEAD:

aerodactyl.jpg

Aerodactyl @ Focus Sash
Ability: Unnerve
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Spe
- Stone Edge
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake

Aerodactyl used to be an OU lead that was famous for always getting Rocks down. There were very few ways to stop it with his amazing speed. Taunt prevents enemy rocks from getting down as he outspeeds all the other leads bar Scarf Azelf, who is a free switch anyway. Stone Edge OHKOs Beedrill and Galvantula (or at least brings him to sash) and 2HKOs Mandibuzz (maybe just the SpD ones, I'm not really back into damage calcs yet.) Earthquake hits Empoleon (though fails the 2HKO on especially bulky spreads), Cobalion, and the other steels fairly hard. Normally, Aero is a suicide lead, but given his speed and ability to keep rocks off my side of the field, he can sometimes come in at 1HP later in the game to score a revenge kill. Overall, I really like him in this slot.

BREAKER OF WORLDS:

mamoswine.jpg

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Spe
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash
- Knock Off
- Earthquake

LO Mamoswine is another one of my OU favorites that's now in UU. He's probably my second favorite Pokemon of all time (behind Gengar). On this particular team, he's the muscle. He brings priority in Ice Shard that can revenge kill most anything, especially Salamence, Honchkrow, and other flying threats. Icicle Crash is a stronger STAB that can flinch slower walls that I need to hit. Knock Off hits Cresselia and Slowking extremely hard on the switch and disables their regen, and Earthquake 2HKOs pretty much everything that doesn't resist it. If you need something dead, Mamoswine's your man.

THE ANNOYING PIECE OF S***
250px-492Shaymin-Land.png

Shaymin@ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 SpA/ 4 HP / 252 Spe
- Seed Flare
- Earth Power
- Air Slash
- Rest

When I first picked up UU, Shaymin was the BANE of the tier. There was no Blissey, Cressy, Florges, etc. Seed Flare pretty much killed anything and everything it wanted. Nowadays, the above pokemon and a few others can do an admirable job of walling it, but this set can outstall them. I put it on the team initially to deal with the CroCune weakness, which it does admirably. Seed Flare can 2HKO at +1 and even +2 with a SpD drop. Not to mention she doesn't break subs at +1 with Scald without SpA investment (again, basing it on what I've seen, I haven't run the calcs). Subseed lets it wear down anything without reliable recovery while avoiding status. If I end up getting hit with poison or burn, Natural Cure can take care of it. Air Slash gives coverage on Chesnaught and Sceptile, but there's been a nonzero amount of times I've really wanted Earth Power to deal with Doublade, Cobalion, and others that resist Seed Flare. With 100 base stats, she's bulky enough to take the non-SE hits I need her to take, and fast enough to outspeed most of the tier and subseed them to death, along with having one of the strongest STAB moves there is. I will say that about 20% of my losses have been to Seed Flare msises, but that's the price you pay for greatness.

THE PARTNER IN CRIME:
crobat.jpg

Crobat @ Black Sludge
Ability: Infiltrator
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk/ 4 HP / 252 Spe
- Brave Bird
- U-Turn
- Defog
- Roost

Wherever you saw Shaymin, you saw Crobat. He was the best check to Shaymin, the best anti-lead in the tier with Taunt and U-Turn, and threatened really hard once he got Brave Bird in Plat. Nowadays, he still checks Fighting and Grass moves with his excellent typing, and acts as a very fast Defogger. It's absolutely essential against those stall teams that I get the spikes and rocks gone, and Crobat can do it very safely by switching in to a 4x resisted attack. Cross Poison hits Florges harder than anything else my team can muster (though a Mamoswine Earthquake does only slightly less) and he takes only ~30% from Moonblast which is easily Roostable. Unfortunately, Crobat can be setup fodder for bulky Cobalion, Mega Aggron, and Rhyperior, who can all sweep my team if they're weak enough.

I was surprised, however, by how little Brave Bird does to a number of Pokemon when it hits neutrally, and have given consideration to giving Crobat a Life Orb to make him more offensive. He is the one I'm most willing to part with right now.

NFE NO PROBLEM

680.png

Doublade @ Evolite
Ability: No Guard
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk/ 242 HP / 16 SpD
- Swords Dance
- Shadow Sneak
- Sacred Sword
- Iron Head

Voted "Most Likely to Sweep a Weakened Team" by his High School class, and an excellent physical wall that checks dragon types and makes a mockery of all the fighters in the tier (including the dreaded Meinshao). +2 Shadow Sneak does a surprising amount of damage to a surprising amount of things, and Ghost/Fighting/Steel is perfect neutral coverage. Iron Head is the strongest STAB and destroys every Fairy type in the tier after a boost, Shadow Sneak is my 2nd priority for revenge killing and can score some easy kills on Chandelure after boosts. Sacred Sword is the highest BP attack and hits Cobalion and Dark Types on the switch. Speaking of, he's probably the best physical wall that I've seen in the tier between typing and stats, so he forces switches often and this team can really take advantage of that.

Funny story: I asked when I came back why the hell Aegislash was banned in OU because I'd used him in game and played on WiFi and he seemed fine to me. After seeing how much this guy can wreck with a perfect IV/EV spread and set, I can understand why.

MEET THE NEW BOSS
_1077388.jpg

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Torrent/Mega Launcher
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 SpA/ 146 HP / 112 Spe
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Aura Sphere

Holy good goddamn, this is not your parents' Blastoise. I ran this guy as a bulky Spinner back in the day, but now with the Mega Evolution and the new ability in Mega Launcher, he becomes an offensive monster while retaining a really bulky stat spread that lets him switch in on pretty much any resisted attack and hit back with great coverage. Scald is the best STAB simply for the burn chance, though Water Pulse hits a tiny bit harder. Ice Beam hits the Grass switch ins, but barely misses the OHKO on Roserade to my incredible dismay. Dark Pulse hits Psychics and Ghosts incredibly hard with the Mega Launcher boost, as well as being the best neutral move against water resisters due to the flinch chance and high BP. Aura Sphere hits the steels much harder than Scald and nets some surprising 2HKOs. This guy is a powerhouse, but he is also my only check to Fire types that otherwise run rampant through the team, so I have to keep him alive and healthy. He also gives free switch ins to Florges and I can't really punish them for it other than getting a free Defog off Crobat.

THREATS: Normally I'd copy a list from someone else's RMT, but given I only know what I have experience with, I'll just list a few:

Cobalion - This guy can run through my team easily once Doublade is dead. Crobat can take a few hits but can't do anything of substance back, he outspeeds and OHKOs Mamoswine, 2HKOs Blastoise, and 2HKOs Shaymin with the offensive spread. He's the reason I'm considering Earth Power on Shaymin.

Hydreigon - Against Scarf and Specs versions, it's just a prediction game. If I guess wrong, one of my guys is dead, no question. Draco Meteor even does significant damage to Doublade, who can't even OHKO back. If he's weakened, I can Ice Shard him, if he's locked into Dark Pulse, Blastoise can take the hit and get him back with Ice Beam, and Doublade can nail him on the switch with Sacred Sword. The problem is that I literally have to play much better than my opponent to even have a chance.

Florges - Those Moonblasts hit hard. Unlike Cressy, she can break Shaymin's sub and she has access to Synthesis, which means I can't just hard stall her out. She gets free switch ins to half my team and I can't really do much to stop her. Usually she just ends up being a casualty at the end of the game once I'm way ahead, otherwise she's an impenetrable wall for me.

Infernape - Jesus, what's this guy doing down here? Mixape is a real problem for me because my 2 fighting checks get roasted by Fire Blast. I can revenge kill him just fine, but he gets a free switch in to Doublade and can revenge kill something pretty much every time I kill one of his. Grass Knot destroys Blastoise so I can't really swap him in to take Fire Blasts too often, and Ice Shard and Shadow Sneak are both resisted, so he's even difficult to revenge kill. I've had the best luck when he's on teams where I keep Aerodactyl alive so that he can come back and kill him with EQ, but other than that, he's a real problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Like I said, I'm pretty much a newb again. I threw this team together in a few minutes and tweaked it only slightly afterwards, so I know it's quite rough. Looking forward to getting back to the high ranks.

Minor tweak- Probably should make your Blastoise Modest, not Adamant.

I'd do a detailed pick-apart, but I'm tired, so minor help will have to do.

Hey nice team. Here are a few changes:
I think you should run Pursuit over Earthquake on Aerodactyl, since Mega Beedrill is a common lead and you can punish it when it'll U-Turn out turn 2. It also deals with lead Azelfs and breaks their Sash easily. Next up, since you have Natural Cure on Shaymin, running Rest over Substitute is a great idea. I'd also run U-Turn/Taunt on Crobat over Cross Poison and Jolly over Adamant, since that only hits Florges and you have Doublade to punish it, and you'd want to outspeed Azelfs and Mega Houndooms.
Running a Max Defense Florges over Crobat is also a good idea since you're weak to Hydreigon. In that case use Rapid Spin on Mega Balstoise.

Welcome back! Time to rate this :)
  • First off, go Thick Fat > Oblivious on Mamoswine as Thick Fat provides more utility with a Fire neutrality and an Ice resist than a Taunt immunity.
  • Next, I suggest going with Life Orb Shaymin > SubSeed Shaymin as Life Orb Shaymin provides more power as well as Healing Wish utility which alows mons like Doublade a second chance at sweeping after being statused.
Shaymin @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Seed Flare
- Earth Power
- Dazzling Gleam / Psychic
- Healing Wish
  • I second Arifeen's suggestion of U-turn / Taunt > Cross Poison on Crobat for the reasons he stated.
Other than that, I like the team and hope you enjoy my rate! :)

Ah another offense team, what luck. Anyhow I feel some of the sets of the team could definitely be optimized and some changes could definitely be made to ensure you can deal with a few threats with more ease. Without further ado, onto the rate itself:
  • Looking at your threatlist, with the amount of wallbreaking power you have, changing one of the breakers isn't too bad of an idea. Therefore, I recommend having Whimsicott > Shaymin, as this allows you to have a nice and fast Pokemon that has an immunity to Dragon and a Dark resistance, making him a good remedy to your Hydreigon issue while also making Cobalion, Infernape, and Florges less of an issue due to its high Speed and access to Encore, as well as a decently strong Moonblast. It also gives you a good pivot to retain momentum.
  • Next up, I highly recommend having Jolly > Adamant, U-turn > Cross Poison, Taunt > Defog and Sky Plate > Black Sludge on Crobat. Adamant natured Crobat doesn't outspeed the likes of Adamant Mega Beedrill, Modest Mega Sceptile, opposing Crobat and +1 Feraligatr and I've never noticed the power difference anyhow, making Jolly a pretty superior option here. Cross Poison doesn't hit super effective targets much harder than a neutral Brave Bird does anyhow and it's pretty useless on Crobat, regardless of the set and U-turn provides you with a pivot, thus giving you free momentum, it's a much better option here. Defog on a team with a lead seems pretty counterproductive considering you'll just end up removing your own Rocks while not being able to set them up again, and Taunt provides you with good utility in being able to prevent the recovery of walls, prevent the opposing team from setting entry hazards, as well as stop the likes of Cobalion etc from being able to setup among other things. Lastly, Sky Plate boosts Brave Bird to where it can easily 2HKO the likes of Cobalion and Tentacruel among other things, and the more offensive pressure the better.
  • Gyro Ball > Iron Head and Brave > Adamant with 0 Spe IVs on Doublade. Dragon Dance Salamence can be quite a threat should you be relying solely on Whimsicott to handle it and using Gyro Ball helps lessen the pressure of needing Whimsicott to switch into it, and the power difference isn't too noticable at times anyhow, especially after a boost. Brave and 0 Speed IVs are to maximize Gyro Ball damage.
  • I also recommend having 144 HP / 252 SpA / 112 Spe > current EVs on Blastoise, as this allows you to outspeed up to max Speed Adamant regular Swampert before it Mega Evolves, which also includes outspeeding most Suicune and other base 85s, allowing you to hit it before it uses Calm Mind.
  • Lastly, Fire Blast > Earthquake and Naive > Jolly on Aerodactyl. Fire Blast helps weaken the likes of Mega Aggron and Cobalion while also being able to ensure Forretress isn't a pest. Naive allows Aerodactyl to hit the same Speed while ensuring Fire Blast damage isn't minimized while the bulk loss from using Naive shouldn't matter considering this is lead Aerodactyl.
  • Aside from that, you COULD run Rapid Spin somewhere on Blastoise for entry hazard removal but the team doesn't really need it considering you can prevent entry hazard setting via Crobat and Aerodactyl and none of the team members are particularly weak to Stealth Rock, excluding Crobat which has Roost to recover HP anyhow.
Whimsicott @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Encore
- Giga Drain
- Moonblast
- U-turn

Considering this is your only Suicune check, having Giga Drain over other options seems like a good idea considering it gives you decent longevity and allows you to beat Suicune much more easily.

Cool team and I'm glad someone else decided to use Mega-Blastoise. My adivce would be replacing one of the Pulse attacks with Protect, it's your choice. Blastoise benefits a lot from Protect to keep it healthy, survive a turn, scout threads, etc. Also, if your Blastoise doesn't get hit that much I recommend Water Spout instead of Scald. It hits like a truck and it may help against your Infernape problem.

Updated with some changes. Whimsicott I kind of like over Crobat actually, but then my team is so Fire weak that it's insane. The Blastoise EV spread was a good idea, Thick Fat was something I just forgot to do, I prefer Adamant Crobat simply because those 2 speed ties really don't matter, but U-Turn was a better idea now that I've tested it a bit.
