Blissey (Analysis)

[Overview]

Blissey used to be has been the premier special wall since it's her release in the GSC. It's not difficult to see why: Blissey has an absurd amount of Special Defense, the highest HP stat in the game, and an incredible support move pool movepool. But it's not all good news for Blissey. Her Defense stat is pitiful, and her offensive stats are mediocre to say the least. To make matters worse, the introduction of Eviolite makes her pre-evolution, Chansey, much bulkier than Blissey. However, Blissey does have some advantages over her pre-evolution Chansey, namely a usable Special Attack stat and the ability to choose between Shed Shell and Leftovers. Unfortunately, Blissey is set-up setup bait for many competent DW threats of the DW OU metagame , like such as Excadrill, Keldeo, and Chandelure. Don't let these faults deter you from using Blissey, though, as she can wall many of the threats in the DW OU metagame.

[SET COMMENTS]

Blissey makes for an excellent Wish user due to her high HP stat and excellent bulk. Wish is mandatory for healing Blissey and teammates. Protect is useful for guaranteeing to guarantee that you regain HP with Wish Wish recovery, Protect is also useful as well as for scouting to scout for Trick, Knock Off, and Fighting-type STAB moves, all of which are extremely detrimental to greatly threaten Blissey. Softboiled can be used if you rather Blissey function primarily as a wall first, and a cleric second instead to increase Blissey's walling capabilities. Once again, Toxic is Blissey's main means of dealing damage to foes, since as her offensive stats are mediocre. Seismic Toss is useful for maintaining consistent damage on all Pokemon that aren't a bar Ghost-types, while Flamethrower is useful for taking down lets Blissey take down Steel-, Grass-, and Bug-types, such as Breloom, Genesect, and Ferrothorn Ferrothorn, and Genesect.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Once again, Shed Shell is the item of choice as it allows you Blissey to escape the wrath of Chandelure. If your team deals with Chandelure quite easily, then feel free to run Leftovers. The EV spread maximizes HP so that Blissey can make weakened Pokemon on your team healthy again to make Blissey's Wishes more effective. Maximum Defense investment is useful so that Blissey can enables Blissey to take physical moves that aren't Fighting-type STABs all but STAB Fighting-type physical moves. An EV spread of 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 HP can be used if you're not concerned with passing enormous Wishes to your teammates (what are the advantages of this other EV spread? any specific KOs it avoids?).

Any sturdy physical wall makes for a decent partner to Blissey. Examples include , such as Slowbro, Gliscor, Amoonguss, and or Skarmory, makes for a decent partner to Blissey. Skarmory gets a special mention because of its ability to set up Spikes for Blissey as Blissey , who in turn can force many switches with her excellent bulk. Speaking of hazards, any Pokemon that can set up entry hazards makes for a decent Blissey partner as she forces switches with her bulk. For this reason, Some good users Setters of entry hazards, include, but are not limited to, including Ferrothorn, and Forretress, and Skarmory also pair well with Blissey.

[SET COMMENTS]

Blissey makes for an excellent support Pokemon with its excellent HP, Special Defense, HP, and movepool. Aromatherapy is useful for removing poison from members of more defensive teams, and removing paralysis from those of more offensive teams ones. Softboiled gives Blissey a reliable recovery move, and allowing allows her to survive throughout the battle. Toxic is Blissey's main means of dealing damage to foes, as her offensive stats aren't great. Seismic Toss is useful for dealing lets Blissey deal consistent and reliable damage to everything excluding Ghost-types. Flamethrower can be used to hit Steel-types like such as Ferrothorn, who might try to set up hazards, or Excadrill, who may might want attempt to get set up a Swords Dance or two.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Shed Shell is the item of choice as it allows enables Blissey to escape the wrath of Chandelure, a Pokemon that can switch into Blissey her with impunity, and is free to freely set up Calm Minds and Substitutes with Substitute + Calm Mind as Blissey sits on her butt. If your team is able to lure and defeat Chandelure with ease, then feel free to use Leftovers. The EV spread maximizes HP and Defense because Blissey's Special Defense stat is so high that there's no need to invest EVs into it (there are always benefits to investing in spd >_> perhaps find a better way to phrase this). An EV spread of 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 HP with a Bold nature can be used if you don't want to invest in Blissey's enormous base HP stat (why would you not want to? what are the advantages of this spread?). If you don't want Toxic or you your team needs a Stealth Rock supporter, Stealth Rock the move is a viable option in the third move slot moveslot.

Teammates that can take on Fighting-types in DW OU make for good partners; notable examples are include Gliscor, Slowbro, and Jellicent. Slowbro and Jellicent deserve special mentions because they are able to can also check Keldeo, one of the few special attackers that can defeat Blissey without resorting to Trick. Entry hazard users, such as Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Tentacruel, make for are also good teammates to Blissey because Blissey who forces many switches. Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Tentacruel are all notable examples. In particular, Tentacruel is a fantastic teammate as it utilizes Toxic Spikes that Blissey can use for stalling out Pokemon the Toxic Spikes it provides can let Blissey stall out opponents. Additionally, Tentacruel also checks the aforementioned Keldeo, and Finally, Tentacruel can take on Fighting-types with its Poison typing and decent bulk.

[Other Options]

Blissey has a plethora of other moves that can be used. A Counter set can be used for surprising physical attackers and then OHKOing them with a Counter surprise and OHKO physical attackers. Thunder Wave can be used over replace Toxic if you rather cripple switch-ins with paralysis as opposed to poison (which group of pokemon/ which pokemon is it more crippling to? and why is it generally inferior to toxic?). Blissey has access to Ice Beam and Thunderbolt (perhaps give a few common targets it hits), but these special attacking options are generally outclassed by Flamethrower (why?). If Blissey is being used on a rain team, Thunder is a good offensive option, though. A Calm Mind set with Serene Grace can be used, but this set is can allow Blissey to make better use of Serene Grace, but would leave her outclassed by nearly every other Calm Mind user. Psych Up can be used for laughing at to laugh at Substitute + Calm Mind users (such as?), who generally can set up all over Blissey. Thunder is a good move to use if Blissey is being used on a rain team.

[Checks and Counters]

Anything with a Fighting-type STAB, such as Breloom, Conkeldurr, or Terrakion, will hit Blissey so hard that an RBY Chansey in the Safari Zone will whimper. This is including, but not limited to Breloom, Conkelldurr, and Terrakion. Swords Dance Scizor and Excadrill can set up on Blissey, only having to as they only fear the uncommon Flamethrower. Toxic Spikes are an excellent indirect check to Blissey as it limits her ability to stay on the battlefield for a long period of time; Some examples of Toxic Spikes users are these can be easily set up by Roserade and Tentacruel. Trick users, like such as Latios, can cripple Blissey as she is incredibly reliant on Shed Shell to avoid the wrath of Chandelure, or Leftovers to give her consistent recovery. In DW OU, Keldeo is stands out as one of the only special attackers that can beat Blissey, as her signature move, Secret Sword, targets Blissey's weak pitiful Defense stat. Other special attackers that can beat overcome Blissey are Reuniculus Reuniclus, Growth Venusaur in the sun, and Wish + Calm Mind Jirachi. Finally, Forretress and Ferrothorn can set up hazards all over Blissey while only having to as they only fear the rare Flamethrower.

 • note that "moveslot" and "movepool" are coined terms; don't write these as "move slot" or "move pool" respectively
 • also note the spelling of Conkeldurr and Reuniclus - if you don't remember/ aren't sure, either use the pstats irc bot or look it up on smogon

try not to overuse the phrase "x is useful for y" - not just because of the repetition, but also because it's unnecessarily wordy! saying "x does y" usually achieves the same thing much more effectively. To illustrate:"Protect is useful for guaranteeing that"
vs "Protect guarantees that".

same thing applies with "x can be used for y": "A Counter set can be used for surprising physical attackers" vs "A Counter set surprises / lets Blissey surprise physical attackers"

hope that helped, and if there's anything you need clearing up, feel free to drop me a VM or something :]

1) this bit still needs more clarification! "if you don't want to invest in HP" is not a reason; why would you not want to invest in HP? what benefits do the alternative spread provide: better physical/ special tanking ability?

2) my bad, EVs should be listed in the order 4/252/252 ("4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD")

3) from the Blissey EV spread discussion in OU C&C, 4/252+/252 is 100% inferior to 252/252/4+

(similar applies to the sentence in first set AC.)

and, uh, I could very well be wrong 'cause I'm entirely theorymonning here, but with the amount of priority Lucario has, maybe it's not the best example of a sweeper that's crippled by paralysis? I don't know lol, feel free to leave as-is :d

A few notes:

 • This is my first complete am GP check, so I'm sorry if I've been persnickety enough to point out trivial errors.

 • I noticed many expressions were used repeatedly; like the "wrath of Chandelure", "set up all over Blissey", and "feel free to use Leftovers". While I might be new here, I do know that repeating expressions make your writing rather bland.

 • I also found some sentences to be long winded. Hence, I split them into multiple smaller sentences.

The rest seems good, thanks to sirndpt's earlier check, which only allowed me to weed out errors.

I'm not gonna comment on the rest of the check, especially the prose changes as those are probably subjective and I did the first check, but just a quick note that the phrase is "setup bait", and never "a setup bait" -- have a look over the previous instances where it's used in this thread to get an idea. :)

Sir, if you're implementing this check, the "a" can simply be removed in both instances of "to avoid being a setup bait for Chandelure".

also just a reminder that this hasn't been addressed from my previous post. point #1 is somewhat whatever, but points #2 and 3 actually do need to be dealt with lol.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Shed Shell enables Blissey to escape the wrath of Chandelure, a Pokemon that can switch into her with impunity and freely set up with Substitute and Calm Mind. If your team is able to lure and defeat Chandelure with ease, then feel free to use Leftovers. The EV spread maximizes HP and Defense because Blissey's Special Defense stat is so high that Blissey can take special attacks with ease even without investment. An EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 HP with a Bold nature can be used if you don't want to invest in Blissey's enormous base HP stat; this spread also lets you avoid a 2HKO from Choice Specs Politoed's Hydro Pump in the rain and a Flash Fire-(hyphen)boosted Fire Blast from Heatran in the sun.(period) If your team needs a Stealth Rock user, the moveStealth Rock is a viable option in the third moveslot.

Teammates that can take on Fighting-types make for good partners; notable examples include Gliscor, Slowbro, and Jellicent. Slowbro and Jellicent can also check Keldeo, one of the few special attackers that can defeat Blissey without resorting to Trick. Entry hazard users, such as Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Tentacruel, are also good teammates tofor Blissey, who forces many switches. In particular, Tentacruel is a fantastic teammate,(comma) as the Toxic Spikes it provides can let Blissey stall out opponents. Additionally, Tentacruel checks the aforementioned Keldeo, and can take on Fighting-types with its Poison typing and decent bulk.

[Other Options]

A Counter set can surprise and OHKO physical attackers. Thunder Wave can replace Toxic if you want to cripple fast sweepers that switch into Blissey such as Lucario. Blissey has access to Ice Beam and Thunderbolt, but these special attacking options are generally outclassed by Flamethrower because of its ability to hit the common Steel-types in DW OU. If Blissey is being used on a rain team, Thunder is a good offensive option, though. A Calm Mind set can allow Blissey to make better use of Serene Grace, but would leave her outclassed by nearly every other Calm Mind user. Psych Up can be used to laugh at Substitute + Calm Mind users such as Jirachi, who generally can set up all over Blissey.<idk, the grammar is fine, but you're just saying stuff. maybe a bit more of why counter isn't used, or why thunder isn't used. the thunderbolt / ice beam part was a good example though>

[Checks and Counters]

Anything with a Fighting-type STAB move, such as Breloom, Conkeldurr, or Terrakion, will hit Blissey so hard that an RBY Chansey in the Safari Zone will whimper<lol idgi>. Swords Dance Scizor and Excadrill can set up on Blissey, as they only fear the uncommon Flamethrower. Toxic Spikes are an excellent indirect check to Blissey as they limits her ability to stay on the battlefield for a long period of time; these can be easily set up by Roserade and Tentacruel. Trick users, such as Latios, can cripple Blissey,(comma) as she is incredibly reliant on Shed Shell to avoid the wrath of Chandelure, or Leftovers to give her consistent recovery. In DW OU, Keldeo stands out as one of the only special attackers that can beat Blissey, as Secret Sword targets Blissey's pitiful Defense stat<subcm rachi can win, specs politoed can often 2hko, etc. not really the only>. Other special attackers that can overcome Blissey are Reuniclus, Growth Venusaur in the sun, and Wish + Calm Mind Jirachi.<oh wait, why did you say only earlier...> Finally, Forretress and Ferrothorn can set up hazards all over Blissey as they only fear the rare Flamethrower.

note: I added Natural Cure as the ability to both sets for obvious reasons. I'm assuming this was just an oversight, but I prefer to inform people when I make changes to the sets lol.

[Overview]

Blissey has been the premier special wall since her release in GSC. It's not difficult to see why: Blissey has an absurd amount of Special Defense, the highest HP stat in the game, and an incredible support movepool. But it's not all good news for Blissey; her Defense stat is pitiful, and her offensive stats are mediocre to say the least. To make matters worse, the introduction of Eviolite makes her Blissey's pre-evolution, Chansey, much bulkier than Blissey she is. However, Blissey does have some advantages over Chansey, namely a usable Special Attack stat and the ability to choose between Shed Shell and Leftovers. Unfortunately, Blissey is setup bait for many competent DW threats, such as Excadrill, Keldeo, and Chandelure. Don't let these faults deter you from using Blissey, though, as she can wall many of the threats in the DW OU metagame.

[SET COMMENTS]

Blissey makes for an excellent Wish user due to her high HP stat and excellent bulk. Wish is mandatory for healing Blissey and her teammates. Protect is useful to guarantee Wish recovery, as well as to and scout for Trick, Knock Off, and Fighting-type STAB moves, all of which greatly threaten Blissey. Softboiled can be used However, Blissey can use Softboiled instead to increase Blissey's her walling capabilities. Once again, Toxic is Blissey's main means method of dealing damage to foes, as her offensive stats are mediocre. Seismic Toss is useful for maintaining consistent damage on all to deal consistent damage to all Pokemon bar Ghost-types, while Flamethrower lets Blissey take down Steel-, Grass-, and Bug-types, such as Ferrothorn, Breloom, and Genesect.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Shed Shell is the item of choice, as it prevents Blissey from being setup bait for Substitute + Calm Mind Chandelure(remove space). If your team deals with Chandelure quite easily, then feel free to run Leftovers. The EV spread maximizes HP to make Blissey's Wishes more effective. Maximum Defense investment enables Blissey to take all but STAB Fighting-type physical moves. An EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD can be used if you're not concerned with passing enormous Wishes to your teammates. O; one of the benefits of the aforementioned this EV spread is the ability to avoid 2HKOes from Modest Choice Specs Politoed's Hydro Pump and Heatran's Flash Fire-boosted Fire Blast in the sun.

Any sturdy physical wall, such as Slowbro, Gliscor, Amoonguss, or Skarmory, makes for a decent partner to Blissey. Skarmory gets a special mention because of its ability to set up Spikes for Blissey, who in turn can force many switches with her excellent bulk. For this reason, setters of entry hazards Similarly, other entry hazard setters, including Ferrothorn and Forretress, also pair well with Blissey.
