========
Scald is a reliable STAB attack that possesses a chance to make Slowbro even more difficult to take down with physical attacks and threatens Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-types like Delphox, Rhydon, Steelix, and Palossand. Scald becomes Hydro Vortex when used alongside Waterium Z and enables Slowbro to break past even Grass-types like Sceptile and Whimsicott as well as opposing Slowbro with the help of Calm Mind. Block lets Slowbro trap passive Pokemon like Mega Audino, Ferroseed, and Miltank as well as bulky Water-types like Vaporeon, Blastoise, and defensive Slowbro. Calm Mind allows Slowbro to better take on special attackers like Diancie, Comfey, and Whimsicott. Rest restores all of Slowbro's HP and clears it of any status from Pokemon like Xatu, Vaporeon, and Seismitoad, making it difficult to wear down once it gets multiple boosts from Calm Mind. Additionally, it lets Slowbro reliably trap and eliminate Pokemon such as Mega Audino, Vaporeon, and Miltank, which rely on Toxic to defeat bulky Water-types, and enables Slowbro to PP stall Water-immune Pokemon like Vaporeon and Seismitoad.
Set Details
========
Maximum HP and Defense investment alongside a Bold nature makes Slowbro as physically bulky as possible, allowing it to better check physical attackers like Passimian, Rhydon, and Klinklang. Regenerator lets it serve as a consistent defensive pivot. Waterium Z turns Scald into Hydro Vortex, providing Slowbro with a single-use strong attack further augmented by potential Calm Mind boosts. Additionally, Waterium Z cannot be removed by Trick users like Rotom or by Knock Off users like Sneasel, Passimian, and Absol. Normalium Z can be used to provide Slowbro with a Defense boost, making it even more difficult to eliminate. Colbur Berry is an alternative to a Z-Crystal that reduces the damage done by Dark-type attacks once and allows a teammate to hold a Z-Crystal. However, it leaves Slowbro susceptible to Trick, which essentially shuts this variant down.
Usage Tips
========
The most important aspect of using this set is to not reveal Block too early. Once the surprise factor of Block is gone, this set becomes much easier to play around. Furthermore, using Block is especially risky if the opponent has a Xatu, as its Magic Bounce allows it to countertrap Slowbro. Thus, it is best to simply use Scald early-game to chip switch-ins like Sceptile, Guzzlord, and Vileplume. Scald should also be used to threaten Rock-, Ground-, and Fire-types like Diancie, Steelix, Palossand, and Delphox with super effective damage. Additionally, Scald is useful for dissuading physical attackers like Sneasel, Decidueye, and Dhelmise from switching into Slowbro. Heliolisk completely shuts down this set, as Slowbro is incapable of threatening it in any way, and it threatens to OHKO Slowbro with Choice Specs-boosted Thunderbolt. Therefore, if the opponent has a Heliolisk, it's most effective to never leave Slowbro in for too many turns to avoid Heliolisk switching in and gaining free momentum. When looking to trap a foe with Block, ideal targets are bulky Water-types like Vaporeon and opposing defensive Slowbro as well as passive Pokemon like Mega Audino, Alolan Sandslash, and defensive Hariyama that may stay in and use Toxic. Once Slowbro has successfully trapped a Pokemon that cannot threaten it with a KO, it can easily boost with Calm Mind to +6 Special Attack and Special Defense. Thanks to Rest, Slowbro is able to reliably set up Calm Mind against Pokemon that carry Toxic such as Mega Audino and Vaporeon, preventing it from being easily worn down by residual damage. However, much like Block, Rest should not be used early-game, as it denies this set's ability to surprise passive Pokemon. Be sure Slowbro is not asleep after removing a foe, as this leaves it easily exploited by setup Pokemon like Incineroar and Decidueye. Slowbro can be used as a defensive pivot while it waits to trap a foe with Block, repeatedly switching into physical attackers like Passimian, Klinklang, and Aerodactyl with ease thanks to its solid physical bulk and Regenerator.
Team Options
========
Checks to Heliolisk and other Electric-types such as Vileplume, Palossand, and Mega Audino are crucial to pair alongside Block Slowbro, as it cannot reliably trap and beat these Pokemon. Heliolisk, specifically, is problematic due to its immunity to Scald. Mega Audino pairs well with Slowbro on bulky archetypes and can provide it with cleric support, preventing Slowbro from having to use Rest to remove status. Pre-Mega Evolution, Audino forms a Regenerator core alongside Slowbro capable of repeatedly switching into strong special and physical attacks, respectively. Pursuit trappers like Sneasel and Skuntank can deal with Ghost-types like Decidueye, Dhelmise, and Mismagius as well as Heliolisk, letting Slowbro more reliably use Block. Sneasel and Skuntank also threaten Grass-types such as Sceptile and Whimsicott. In return, Slowbro provides a switch-in to Fighting-types such as Passimian, Hariyama, and Medicham as well as other physical attackers like Steelix, Rhydon, and Piloswine. Specially defensive Pokemon like Hariyama, Miltank, and Articuno are capable of checking strong special attackers like Vanilluxe, Diancie, and Guzzlord. VoltTurn support from Pokemon such as Passimian, Xatu, and Silvally-Steel can bring Slowbro in against passive Pokemon it is capable of trapping with Block like Mega Audino and defensive Garbodor. Additionally, Silvally-Steel can check Pokemon like Vanilluxe and Comfey, while Passimian threatens Incineroar and Vanilluxe.
