Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song
You worked out all the logic by why this song might be a bad idea to sub and then didn’t switch it. Ballsy play. It is true, this is one of the first things that came to mind when I went to list examples for this category, but since I hate this I didn’t include it. Bruno’s voice is grating in this song and the half-assed ukulele backing gets annoying really fast. On top of that is that fact that at some point I was forced to repeatedly listen to this song I already dislike because, y’know, radio stations, and it becomes a song I hate.

The Bee Gees - I Started A Joke
This sub confuses me. I don’t see the catfit at all. I guess if I warp it hard I can read it as “I tried but now I’m a joke so I don’t want to anymore” but that feels like I’m trying to warp the song beyond recognition to make this interpretation work. As for the song itself I really don’t like the vocals but the instrumental is rather inoffensive, if a little boring. Could’ve been worse.

This is better than The Lazy Song. It’s still not good, but this is better because my brain doesn’t fully process it as that song I hate, but as some weird experimental noise thing. Listenable. Drop in catfit because the original lyrics are more of a theoretical construct here.

I like the lyrical theme of “Fuck the world, it’s too complicated, just let me enjoy my happy delusions for a while.” As for the song it’s not terribly engaging, but it is relaxing I suppose. Maybe a little too sleepy but I guess that makes sense.
Edit: I think a song by this band showed up in M7’s reveal. I don’t think I was terribly interested in that one.

This is fine. I see the passage where the catfit is supposed to come from, and while I don’t think it’s supposed to mean anything related to the catfit it ends up being alright anyways. Sonically it’s a pretty good catfit, the singing and instrumental are both really restrained. Not exactly chill, but definitely lazy-sounding.

Brad Paisley - I’m Gonna Miss Her
Joining “Better Off Beatin’ Off” and “She Only Bitches When She Breathes” in the trinity of ironic country songs bitching about their wives, we have “I’m Gonna Miss Her”. In this emotional story our protagonist, Brad Paisley, stars in an autobiographical story about wanting to go fishing. His wife declares that if he does go fishing she’s leaving. He’ll miss her. I can generally tolerate country songs when they don’t take themselves seriously and just use the genre as a vehicle to shitpost, so this is probably scoring significantly better than an actual ‘serious’ country song.

HEY THERE DELIAH- wait, wrong song, that was mentioned in shub’s writeup. I feel like the song here is too conservative but that is 100% just me going ‘why go for pop punk when you can go actual punk’, but even at that point I’d be going ‘why go punk when you can go noise?’ so eh. It sounds pleasant and is kind of catchy so I like it. Very good catfit, really captures the ‘fuck life I want to vibe in here forever’ energy.
P.S: The attempt at a scream is funny enough not to be terrible but he needs to try harder.

This isn’t what I was looking for with this category but it definitely fits. Listening to this hurts in the same way that listening to Okkusenman does. Similar themes: both are about killing yourself with work, although in this it’s more about never being able to reach your dream instead of never being able to get those innocent childhood days back. I guess it’s kind of the same thing.
God, this shit always makes me want to be a NEET, but that’s probably the worst alternative of all.
Instrumentally it’s cool and the singer is alright (could be a bit more emotional, even if it sounded terrible I wouldn’t care, this is the kind of track where you just scream it out) but the existential suffering is why it’s scoring so high.

In summary: It wasn't a sinus infection, fluid got trapped in my middle ear. It fuckin' REFUSED to come out, and I had some pretty bad tinnitus, headaches, and ear pain. Currently I still have some symptoms but part of the fluid drained out and they're much more mild. Since music now drowns out the ringing the mast majority of the time and I'm not liable to get killer headaches at random several times a week, I'm going to be resuming judging.

I don't really think the whole 8 (or maybe 16 here?)-bit style does it for me but I can kind of appreciate its usage in this track. With the limited instrument set being used instead of cleaner instruments the whole thing sounds a bit more abstract and disturbed as compared to if you had normal instruments. It's an interesting vibe. Unfortunately it is not that musically pleasing to me, so while I appreciate that it's probably a great mood piece in a game like Earthbound (which everyone has been telling me to play for ages by the way, even though I get the themes of it I totally should someday, although that's a lot of games) it is not great to just listen to without context.

I am a fan of Infected Mushroom but am not intimately acquainted with them. I love The Pretender, same with Wish, and I've heard a good part of the album Wish was on, but only once. Have never heard this track. The soulful opening guitar reminds me of Buckethead, which is instantly a good sign. Personally don't like the somewhat-minimalist electronic sections following it as much, but it's still definitely my kind of thing. Then it turns into a moody semi-classical piece which I⦠surprisingly still like. The nature noises and everything leading up to it really add a weight that it would really lack otherwise. Then the drums kick in again, and we go back into the electronic, except now it's kind of Arabic-sounding? Not really a fan of that part to be honest, but it picks up again towards the end with the synthier parts and the return of soulful guitar.

This song is hilarious and exactly what I was looking for with this category. I'm just relaxing to some nice, smooth jazz one moment, and then the next it's just death metal. At first it seems like something like a love song, but you can feel this dark, ominous backing like nails on a chalkboard and BAM, it intensifies and intensifies, drowning everything else out in the process. I noticed it lurking in the background but did not expect the sudden transformation into harsh noise for a while. It is not terribly pleasing musically, but I don't mind the section and it has a very cool lead-up and I can get the meaning off it- the love breaking down, 'No, I can't trust you'. Then it transforms into this funeral dirge, signifying it's death. Really cool stuff, musically I can appreciate it a lot even if for that one portion it isn't necessarily sonically pleasing.

The vocals here sound a little⦠harsh, maybe 'rubbery', and not in a good way. I'm not sure if that's from bad tuning, the voice bank being used, or both. There is something about the repeated sampling that makes the vocals less 'human', and it is autotuned a bit, but it's not really what I was looking for. Cool song though. The backing is smooth, g r o o v y, and overall relaxing. It also has some more electronic stuff pop in for a while, which might actually tie back into the catfit- I THINK it's a voice being used very subtly to add onto the backing track, and while it's not the main allure or meant to be interpreted as vocals, it's neat.
Not outstanding to me among the sea of tracks like this, but I definitely see the appeal and it's a good track.
Edit: wait, what the fuck, it autoplayed another track by them and I can't find any high-played upload of it but I've definitely heard it before A LOT somewhere
Although now I'm not 100% sure if it's the song itself or if it's sampled in a Moe Shop track.
Edit Edit: no, it samples Dancin' All Night, a 1982 track, and according to the site I'm using Moe Shop never has. Plus, I'm positive I've heard THIS whole thing before
This is such a mindfuck.
...uh, thanks for reintroducing me to a song I like better that's also a better catfit I guess?

The guitar has a chaotic, manic energy and it provides a solid backbone to this track's experimental antics. This track makes me feel uneasy and I love it. It uses the same percussion I'd normally hear in frantic, upbeat tracks, slows it down a little, and changes it into something totally different with this weird spacey, unnatural production. It might just be coincidental, but despite not having any lyrics, this definitely feels like something 'inhuman' is approaching me. If I ever get around to making a proper 'dark atmosphere' playlist for when I read appropriate manga and stuff, this is definitely going on there with the likes of Buckethead and parts of the Saya no Uta and Kaiji OSTs.

Uh, you're kind of unlucky here. This is one of the artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga that my mom really, really liked, and would loudly blare on her radio while drunkenly singing to the point where I now hate it. Now, I don't think I'd like it musically even without that, so you're not being entirely robbed (trying to think objectively, if I had no prior associations this would definitely still get below a 6), but with this artist (and this song in particular) I really can't get past my associations with them to judge 100% objectively... although the point of a walrus is for me to give my subjective opinion, and there's no real 'objective' opinions, just a more unbiased one, so eh.

I don't know if this was intended as a punt or not but it's a good punt if it is. I would not traditionally go wild to panflutes and stuff but hey, with electric guitars anything is possible. I'm disappointed, I was talking about how I had to respect the energy and how it was winning me over a bit and then it's like the song chugged an entire bottle of nyquil just to spite me.

It certainly is a tale that’s as old as time, although I do wonder what parallels older societies had to those who are currently afraid of the rise of the antichrist, the satanic undertones of Harry Potter and Pomeon, and the devilish schemes of those who created barcodes.
Definitely interesting lyrically, underwhelming songwise.

Nun Gun - The Spectre
The lyrics match the mood well here. Everything is falling apart, time is melting, days are no longer days and so on and so forth- very post apocalyptic feeling to it all. It’s a really cool feeling.
Also, I’m reminded of the Salvidor Dali painting with all the melting clocks and I can see this being the ‘turned-up-to-11’ cousin of that.

To Be Gentle - 7/14/19
This tells a cool story. Turmoil, violence, some sort of fight, and then… forgiveness. Things fade to silence, and then begin to build back up from there. Could be just be theme for the song, could be based on something, doesn’t really matter to me, I like it. It’s nice musically too- opens up harsh and aggressive before crashing down. Great sub.
Oh, and when this song finished playing the first time it autoplayed into Shibayan Record’s Tiny Little Adamantium.
0/10 mood ruined

Boston - Foreplay/Long Time
I’ve heard this a lot because my parents liked it, doesn’t matter, haven’t grown weary of it yet, I love this song. Been a Long Time since I heard it though, probably a couple years at least. It’s hard to sort out particulars through the nostalgia goggles but the vocals are nice, guitars riffs are solid, and it makes me happy. Does there really need to be more than that?

Kashiwa Daisuke - April.#02
And now second up in our series of ‘songs I didn’t know when MNIN subbed them but now know of’. Although this one isn’t just a mashup I just, uh, found the artist like a week after the walrus started with this exact song. Great timing. Since he asked ahead of time and I went “nope, never heard of them” I’ll just leave the familiarity points in the pre-walrus state and move on with the song itself.
This is a really good neoclassical piece. It has some elements of noise but it doesn’t get aggressive, and all the intermixing of experimental with orchestra is really amazing. Amazing song.

Closer:
Selo i Ludy - It’s My Life
whether or not making this the closer counts as some sort of eight-dimensional shitposting, uhhhh, I like it so it’s the closer

The final category will be revealed on Sunday the 23rd at 1 PM CST. Will MNIN East or Eagle clench the cup? Will Moose be able to remain below the nosubbing nikeas? Will (YOU) suddenly shoot up the scoreboards and gain 10 places due to the host's bullshittery?
Find out in the conclusion to WALRUS BALL Z BLOODY's 2020 Walrus (ft. 2021).

Header

Shiki(TMNS) - The Final Cypher
I had a lot of really fitting choices for the header, most of them something everyone but me will hate, and, uh, this won. Enjoy? Yeah, enjoy. I will.

Waifus - No Waifu… No Laifu
I feel like this has the potential to be great but wastes it, and that makes me sad. Hearing these lyrics growled at me is funny but the instrumental is really repetitive at parts and the vox are eh. I suppose that’s the charm though.

Gandalf gets intimidated by a fat man in the woods into shedding the blood of saxon men whilst a band plays across, hell, heaven, and Detroit (colorized)
Something about these vocals is off in a not good way but whatever it is makes me laugh a ton. Probably how they ham it up. Yeah, now that I think about it it has to be.

Juan Medrano - Coliseum Battle
A little midi-ish but that’s expected of VGM I suppose. Thought the brass was out of place at first but it settled in there after a while and added an almost sort of Latin feel, kind of like that one thing they’d ALWAYS play in cowboy movies before they had the duel at high noon. Nice song.

Ayreon - Day Sixteen: Loser
I did not expect didgeridoo but its inclusion is appreciated. A bit conflicted about the first part of the song, the vocalist’s voice is extremely showtuney, which is the intent I suppose, and while the instruments are nice it can’t entirely make up for that. Weird synthy instrumental section and the AKJFHSKFJDASHF part at the end are cool though.

Yeah, I can definitely see why this was subbed. Fun riffs, although I’m not sure about the vocalist- they sound a little weird to me. Maybe the mixing? Solo near the end is nice, I dig it.

Nice track- MSI’s vocals never fail to be fun to listen to and the instrumental is engaging. Nice guitar and the record-scratchish effects are appreciated. Anyway, for the story of the track. The bitches love him. He knows how to rhyme, AND he knows how to fuck. Impressive.

Weird Al Yankovic - White & Nerdy
Since you asked, uh, there is a difference between a neckbeard and a nerd but this works anyways. Not a huge fan of the backing on this one but the lyrics? Fun as always, Weird Al is a treasure. Extremely enjoyable, if a bit hard to slam on a random playlist.

DEMONDICE - Gang Gang, Kawaii
I don’t really like the vocalist (is this, uhhh, Mori’s old project? Now that I’ve listened to two songs I think I might recognize her from a verse on The Final Cypher which may or may not be the header/closer as of this comment’s writing) but I thoroughly appreciate the lyricism here. Not something I’ll listen to normally but I definitely had fun listening to it and appreciate the sub. Bumping up to a flat 7 for the lyrics, 3DPD and all that.
Edit: nah, she’s not the chick in that, it’s someone else
Also, this is growing on me on relistens. Much like a tumor, but in a good way. I have gotten past the voice’s initial annoyance.

The noisy feedback sections in this are CRUNCHY and the tuning on Miku is well done. Will have to look into this artist. Oh yeah, and RIP your old sub machinegun jackhammering your death grip bloodshot semi chub with your roided doomfist (with your pappi kevin). It was also a lovely sub.

yeah, this vocalist sounds about right for the cat, I’ll take it. I can’t turn my nose up at djent, it’s a solid song, even if it does go on for, uh… too long in my opinion.

Not sure I get the catfit besides being a little desperate but whatever, it’s the metaphorical image blot test chapter. The singer’s voice is pleasant and while the instrumental isn’t particularly unique I enjoy it. Not particularly distinctive but a little addictive. Like the build near the end too.

Edit: now that I am using my brain I get the catfit more, this man is more desperate than I immediately noticed

The consistency award goes to Eagle, for having the lowest difference of 1.8 points between their best and worst scores. (The runner up is soah, at 2.2)

The professional golfing association this time has swelled to two members, the president Moose, and the probationary member Shad. Each of them will receive a voucher for a free set of golf clubs, provided that they can first find me and purchase me a set of golf clubs to get to them.

The best category was We Could Get More Machinegun Psystyle! -And More Genre Switches- with an average song rating of 8.01, and the worst category was Friday Night, with an average song rating of 7.15. The runners-ups for these were Very Noise, and Motivation is Dead, respectively.

I was going to include catfit/artist final standings again, but then I realized my spreadsheet this time looked much nicer, but it did so by excluding this information from the main spreadsheet. Please imagine such a leaderboard is here and your place on it. You can even give yourself an extra spot or two in your head- I won’t tell.

The best songs submitted are listed below. Thanks for subbing them.
Asa Chang and Junray - a last flower [9.3, Adam]
STACY - So Bad [9.3, MNIN East]
the goslings - croatan [9.2, Egix]
Emanuel and The Fear - Jimmie’s Song [9.1, nutella]
Sweet Trip - Pro : Lov : Ad [9.1, ladd]
Kashiwa Daisuke - April.02 [9.1, MNIN East]
DAI DAI DAI - KUTIUTUSIUTUKUSIWI [9.0, MNIN East]
Fantasy - Against All Logic [9.0, MNIN West]
Car Radio - twenty one pilots [9.0, Brainpan]
Various Artists - Hot Plate Vol. 1 [8.9, termi]

And now what you’ve all been waiting for, the final standings.
1st: MNIN East

4th: Egix (-2.0)
5th: soah (-0.1)

20th: Shad (-0.9)
21st: Moose (-5.3)
22nd: nikeas (-7.7)
23rd: Energy (-35.8)

The “most winning winner (besides, of course, the actual winner)” award goes to Shad and Egix, who won two categories. MNIN East also won two categories, but they are the winner and are thus disqualified. Please point and laugh at them. A list of cat winners is shown below:

Shad: 2 [4, 11]
Egix: 2 [2, 3]
MNIN East: 2 [5, 10]
LordQuas: 1 [11]
termi: 1 [9]
Adam: 1 [8]
ladd: 1 [7]
nutella: 1 [6]
nikeas: 1 [1]

And finally, here are the fancy colored scoreboard and the playlist with all the cat winners in it. Thanks for participating, I had a lot of fun and I hope you all did too!
