Bo staff?

Recently I purchased a bo-staff and I am beginning to learn the basics on how to exactly use it correctly. (holding it, figure 8, etc.) For anyone that has used one or has learned to use one: is it really a potent weapon? I can't help but be a little bit curious as to if these skills that I am learning would be useful in what you could call "the real world".

Well, in the first NES TMNT game, it really made Don the best turtle. Maybe that's who you should emulate.

Well, you see, the issue with applying these skills your learning in the real world kind of requires that you be carrying your staff on you at all times. Have fun with that.

You never know. He may be a monk...

Or he could have a really big hiking stick...

Shame canes went out of style if you're sub-60, they have a variety of stick fighting styles out there, or sword if you concel one.

In terms of potency, just from my guess, obviously you aren't going to win against a gun, and it could get messy in cq due to the staff's length (say someone bumrushes you with a knife), but if you can hold off and disable your opponent at range with it, it should do its job well enough for defense.

Canes and staves are very different weapons, and should not be treated as similar ones. A good cane should be equivalent to or under half a person's height while a bo staff is equivalent to their height (+-a foot). That said, if you are looking for a self defense weapon, a cane can be very effective. However, for practicality's sake, the best weapon to master would be the arnis/kali/escrima sticks. (they mean the same thing, the Phillipian tribes that originated them had hundreds of languages). The reasoning for this is the application of the weapon. A standard escrima stick is between 1 and 2 feet long, meaning that you can substitute a variety of things you may find for an escrima should you need to defend yourself (ruler, wooden sticks, piece of pipe, etc).
