I know a lot of people who read Saramago but I've never read anything by him myself. I can talk to them and ask for similar authors if you want. I'm more of a fiction reader though I enjoy poetry from time to time.
I've read pretty much everything by Tolkien (sans the Camelot tales), Dracula, Frankenstein, Mists of Avalon, Gulliver's Travels, The Iliad, Brave New World, The da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, The Lost Symbol, Darkover Landfall, and The Name of the Rose. More recently (since a few months ago) I read the first volume of Barnes & Noble's Sherlock Holmes collection, The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick and Watchmen. Oh yeah, I like me some comics. I follow The Walking Dead, Bleach, Berserk and XXXHolic. Taking my sweet time with Full Metal Alchemist.
As for Brazilian writers, I've read Iracema (José de Alencar), Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (Machado de Assis), Quincas Borbas (Machado de Assis), O Cortiço (Aluísio Azevedo), Capitães da Areia (Jorge Amado) and Viagem à Aurora do Mundo (Érico Veríssimo).
I can give you a more detailed account of each if you want.
Like I said I have a ridiculous backlog and I don't know if it is worth to share but, again, you wish is my command.
