Braviary

Wouldn't when competitive spirits activates Braviary will have +3 -1 ATK and DEF or does Superpower's drawback count as 1 "stat drop"
Competitive Spirit won't activate on self-induced stat drops, like Superpower.
I think Braviary should get Fire Punch and Focus Punch, as a bird Pokémon learning those moves would serve as a tribute to the manliest move to have ever been used in any game.
How can Braviary learn those moves when it doesn't look like it has fists? Its claws or wings, maybe?

That is an exception, Togekiss keeps the ability to have those TMs used on it because its pre evolutions have arms.

Rufflet does not have arms.

Did anyone read the last page? The only reason anyone is speculating Braviary has chance (read: not very likely at all but still existant possibility) of picking up any punching moves is because of the emphasis on his burly, powerful talons. He's one of the first birds to use moves associated with claws, fists, and otherwise great physical strength: Bulk Up, Crush Claw, Slash, Strength, Shadow Claw, Thrash, Hone Claws, and to a lesser extent things like Superpower, Rock Smash, and Rock Slide. Even though plenty of previous birds had powerful looking talons, they didn't really learn talon-based moves. Combine this with Sheer Force and his saddening lack of boostable moves, and some folks are hoping that GameFreak will allow him to be tutored the elemental punches when they are inevitably tutor moves down the line.

It's not similar to Togekiss, it's not similar to Gastly, it's in a class on its own in terms of probability. He is a big Pokemon, established to be incredibly strong through ability, movepool, and Pokedex text, with appendages that could potentially form a fist. Wishful thinking? Mostly. But I can see where it is coming from and hope (just for fun) that it does happen. Sheer Force's power boost would make the Punches, especially Fire Punch, nice tools in Braviary's arsenal.

So apparently it's been said Retaliate boosts to 140 base power even in singles after a teammate has been knocked out.

With STAB, this boosts it to 210 base Power, which definitely shreds lots of things. How much damage are we talking here to most common threats? Anyone want to run calcs to see if this is worth using over Return?

I THOUGHT Retaliate worked like that. Everyone thought it had to be the same turn, but apparently it is in fact the following turn.
This is probably actually worth a test. Return is more consistent obviously, but if the 140 base power nets any notable kills it might be worth running it. If you wanted, I guess you could even go Scarf'd with Return/BB/Superpower/Retaliate, if you don't mind losing the utility of U-turn or the extra coverage of Rock Slide.

Could anyone run calcs for Braviary's Retaliate? I'm starting to think that Scarf Retaliate could set him apart a little bit if it gets any notable KOs that Return doesn't.

Thing is, when you actually run Retaliate on Braviary, you're banking on the chance your opponent will NOT switch out to something that resists it. Granted, it hits very hard, but even still, you end up in the situation where you're trying to predict a switch anyway.

I ran Retaliate for a while and ended up rarely using it because chances are, Brave Bird will cover things just as well, or I would find the situation better to U-Turn in to gain momentum. Retaliate really does hit hard though, since 70 x 2 x 1.5 = 210 BP. It's already bad enough you're using Retaliate after you lost a Pokemon, but then you're also locked into it and afterwards, it becomes 70 (before STAB) BP which is really underwhelming.

Braviary
Adamant nature
Evs: 252 attack, 252 speed, 4 defense
Item: Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Moveset:
Rock Slide
Air Slash
Sky Drop
Crush Claw

With Sheer force ability it will power up rock slide air slash and crush claw by 30%
the Life orb will boost all moves by ANOTHER 30%, but with the ability Sheer Force, a life orb doesn't send any recoil damage when using moves that sheer force encourages.
count in that crush claw is a STAB, your lookin at a base power of over 190. and its a physical move so with Braviary's staggering attack, I've taken down defenseive rock types in 2HKO's. not to mention he can take out basically any pokemon it does normal damage to as well. very good sweeper espescially if you can get a support to boost his defense or speed (or both) even more

braviary has shit special attack
that spread has no sp. attack evs

air slash is a special attack.

i will let you figure out whats wrong

Air Slash is Special, and Sky Drop is inferior to Brave Bird. Other than that, you need hazards to take down Tyranitar, and get walled by steel-types, but it's a good set, albeit slow and taken down easily.

Welcome to Smogon!

Welcome to Smogon, Luckybear!

Glad to see another Braviary fan, but he's definitely much better off avoiding special attacks. His stats and movepool make him a pretty solid physical attacker with a Life Orb or choice item, even though he's a little on the slow side. He may not see a ton of usage, but he's pretty useful in RU and UU, and he cleans up VERY well in NU. Hell, even if you want to use him in OU, he's perfectly manageable if you have your heart set on on using him and you play to his strengths.

Still looking forward to new moves he may pick up from B2/W2 tutors or as Dream World special moves (which I hope will be allowed with 5th gen mons in the next games). Roost, Agility, and maybe a few surprising physical options (E.Speed or new Sheer Force moves would be awesome) are all on the wishlist to give Braviary a little extra boost.
