Breeding Worthwhile?

The breeding guides on this site are absolutely fabulous, but I've noticed that when you actually sit down to breed a competitive pokemon, it suddenly becomes alot more complicated than the guides show. For example breeding for hidden power becomes several order of magnitudes more time consuming and frustrating when trying to get a specific Nature AND an Egg move AND just 2 or 3 perfect IVs.

I just sat down to figure out what it would take to breed a Mild Specially based Electivire with three perfect IV's, Hidden Power: ICE, and Cross Chop. The answer was an average of 372 eggs. That was before I noticed that Electivire has a 75/25 Male/Female gender ratio, which complicates things more. Assuming 5 minutes per egg (low considering time spent logging on to wifi or rare candy resetting to check IV's, and evolving the stupid elekids with happiness) that comes to 31 hours of play time.

I know you guys are hardcore, but does anyone actually do this? I really hate the idea of just copping out and getting an action replay- but assuming 8 hours a day of play time, 4 days simply to BREED ONE competitive pokemon seems insane.

Are my figures off? Am I making breeding harder than it really is? Should I just go for egg moves/nature and forget about hidden power and perfect IVs? Should I get an Action Replay for battling, but keep my legitimate pokemon only for trading? Any constructive comments or advice would be great- I just wanna get a feel for how most people in the community tackle this.

It took me about 4 days to get a tri-perfect timid Ghastly (Perfect HP, Sp Atk, and Speed, and a lucky 30 in Defense)
Actually, it only took me about 2 days to get a Ghastly with perfect HP, Speed, and Special Attack, but the defenses were bad so I kept breeding trying to get 20+ in both Defenses.

It's not as if I spent 24 hours a day breeding though. Maybe about 4 hours total spread out throughout the day and much of it is just biking up and down while watching TV or chatting on AIM. So all in all it probably only really took me about 16 hours of light playing to get a pretty nice Ghastly that I can use and trade to others. Worth it if you ask me.

I mean. It's better than WoW. :|

As for the gender, the 75/25 is a bit tricky. It was easy for me to get a male and female Ghastly with the IVs I wanted to pass down, but if you're constantly hatching Male Elekids with perfect IVs, and you're not getting the females with those IVs, then it becomes harder to replace the parents to get better IVs.
