Bright (Sun Team)

Bright
Intro
Hello guys! As you can see, I'm a new member and am extremely interested in learning the competitive OU game. Tried some research and a weeks worth of test games and tweaking before bringing it here, so hopefully it isn't too bad. ^-^

Team

Ninetales (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Spd / 120 Def
Timid Nature
- Sunny Day
- Roar
- Will-O-Wisp
- Flamethrower
Obviously the MVP weather inducer. I went with the defensive set up to help first of all help Ninetales survive, seeing how important winning weather wars are. This is the same reasoning for the Leftovers. I also went with Hypnosis over Solar Beam because I have plenty of Solars to go around and switching into a pokemon setting up and getting the Drought plus Hypnosis has been a real life saver.
Changes: I ended up changing Hypnosis to Roar. I seemed to have a problem with certain pokemon being able to switch in and set up, without me being able to take them out.

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 4 SDef
Timid Nature
- Sunny Day
- Magma Storm
- SolarBeam
- Earth Power
Magma Trap Heatran is an immediate pressure to the opponent, with its plethora of resistances (which is expanded with the Air Balloon) and wide/hard hitting move pool. Sunny Day is for the off chance Ninetales dies and allows for answering a Politoed without a switch.
Changes: I did end up changing Hidden Power [Ice] to Earth Power, as suggested.

Venusaur (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 72 HP / 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 180 Spd
Timid Nature
- Growth
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sludge Bomb
The special sweeper of the team. Venusaur has an amazing ability in the sun, access to Growth, and has a wide move pool. Giga Drain lets Venusaur recover from the Life Orb damage. My only problem is that he sometimes seems too frail.

Latias @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd / 4 SAtk
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Roost
- Dragon Pulse
- Substitue
I feel that Latias is an overlooked option for sun teams. The dual screens let me drag out matches in a certain sense, but also lets me survive on the off chance an opponent gets a set up in somewhere. Healing Wish is amazing in letting me bring back a pokemon thought to be out, usually catches the opponent off guard.
Changes: Changed from the DualScreens to the SubCM set. I do miss the Healing Wish, but now I have an answer to other Dragons. It has been working quite well, but I still usually never get an opportunity to use him.

Dugtrio (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Reversal
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock
Trapper Dugtrio was tested and ended up replacing Tangrowth. Great way to deal with Volcanora (which I'd been having trouble with) and other threats. He is also a great lead when leading with Ninetales seems too risky. I'm currently adoring his speed, too.

Donphan (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Impish Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Ice Shard
Finally, my Spinner has changed to Donphan. The reason for going this route over Forretress his is access to Ice Shard. Toxic is for stallers, such as the Chansey line. I do worry about Toxic Spikes, but I really don't see a way around it.
Tangrowth (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Spd / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Jolly Nature
- Power Whip
- Growth
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Rock Slide
Tangrowth is the defensive wall and attack sweeper. Rock Slide is used for the troublesome Volcarona and sneaks up on Dragonite and Salamence that seem to be everywhere. I have been torn between Leftovers and Life Orb, but seeing as I'm not running Giga Drain I decided on going with the Leftovers. It hasn't been a problem yet, but what do you guys think?
Claydol @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Careful Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Toxic
Spinner and hazard of the team, usually my lead against another weather team. I went with Claydol over Donphan because of the Levitate over hazards and the fear of Psychic and such. Toxic helps get rid of those stall pokemon.
That is my team, don't hold back.

Nice team Zero, first thing first don't use claydol as a spinner there are alot better options like Starmie and Forretress. You can find their sets here. Forretress | Starmie. That is a pretty cool Tangrowth set i am going to test it out before i say anything about that. Everything else looks pretty good though you could try Roar or Solarbeam over Hypnosis. Anyway nice team you have there.

OK, firstly nice team!
Majorly, only two members of your team are quite bad: Tangrowth and Claydol.
Tangrowth offers VERY redundant coverage as Venusaur already offers Grass-STAB. More importantly, it's not so much than Tangrowth is BAD more than Sun teams need a slot for a VERY important mon: Dugtrio
Dugtrio helps trap and KO mons otherwise detrimental to the Sun-strategy(e.g Ttar).
So I would HIGHLY recommend replacing Tangrowth with Dugtrio.

Claydol is also not a very good rapid spinner as it has WAY too many weaknesses that are too difficult to cover. I would recommend you replace Claydol with Forretress. Forretress is a good rapid spinner as it offers a LOT of good resists, hazards, Sturdy and Rapid Spin that help sun-teams a lot.

Finally, with pursuit-trappers like Ttar and Scizor rampant in the tier, Latias simply doesn't have the time to set up dual screens without wasting crucial momentum. So, I'd recommend you replace the dual screens set with the SubCM set as it can set up a sub on the switch, easily boost to +1 and beat out threats that cause issues for the team otherwise.

Summary of changes:
Dugtrio>Tangrowth: use the only on-site set for OU, the trapper set:http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/dugtrio
Forretress>>Claydol: Use the only on-site set for OU, the Rapid Spin set:http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/forretress
SubCM Latias>Dual Screens Latias: Use the Calm Mind set on-site for OU:http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/latias

Best of luck!

Ok, Forretress and Dugtrio are working beautifully. I'll still keep testing though.

Haven't had many plays for Latias yet, so I'm still going to keep trying.

Alright thought I'd give my rate. Keep your latias as Sub CM, it works fantastic on sun teams, the only thing you need to change is Tangrowth. Your team is really weak to Mamoswine. Never use Starmie in the sun, whoever suggested that must have been sleepy. Scald is weakened by Sun, and it becomes pretty much useless. However, vyomov is correct that Tangrowth offers redundant coverage, Claydol though is a fine spinner, it's outclasses by Donphan a little bit, who can deal with dragons betters, but it still fits on the team. Dugtrio, also, isn't a sun staple, it works, but it is by no means a necessary pokemon to have. The Dual Screens set you have on Latias right now is also quite redundant, you only have 1 sweeper, and Venusaur is walled by Heatran. However, Dugtrio is stupid, because you're still incredibly weak to Mamoswine. Anyways, since it looks like you're sticking to Dual Screens, your last poke needs to be a set up sweeper that can deal with Mamoswine. The only pokemon I can think of that fits into your team is AcroZor. Here is the set.

212.png
Scizor (F) @ Flying Gem
Trait: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Super Power / U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Acrobatics
- Swords Dance

Then if I were you I'd put Earth Power > HP Ice on your Heatran, and do Ice Beam > Toxic on Claydol. Earth Power can hit other Heatrans, and Ice Beam can then hit Dragons. Finally, you might want to try out Earthquake on Venu. It has a large surprise factor, and can also check Heatran. This is the set I use.

003.png
Venusaur (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 20 HP / 60 Atk / 252 SAtk / 176 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Growth
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Earthquake

60 Attack is all you need to KO Heatran after SR, 176 Speed is to outspeed Scarf Latios, no more is really necessary. 252 Maximizes Special Attack, and 20 Hp is there for most overall bulk. Naive Nature because Venu needs to be able to take Physical Priority moves generally. Hope this helps.

Edit'd the OP to show the changes after testing constantly. Thanks so much for the help so far! =]

Thoughts: Am I under prepared for Dragons? I also get the feeling I'm forgetting something.
