ORAS OU Bringing Sand Stall back

Intro
Hello guys Liar here. I've been working on this new team recently and I thought it was pretty interesting so here I am sharing the result. I've always liked the concept of using passive damage to wear down the opponent and sweeping with a pokemon of choice and that's what I'm going for here. So let's get into it, shall we?

The Team

Amoonguss @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
IVs: 0 Atk
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Sludge Bomb
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Foul Play

So what I'm going for is a defensive core with triple Regenerator users. Why? I try to wear down my opponent with Sand and hazards, but at the same time I can now also heal my team members constantly without having to do anything. Well half of them that is, but still it works really well. Amoonguss is my special wall of choice, also dealing with top threats like Thundurus, Keldeo, Breloom, Clefable, Rotom-W, Gengar, Azumarill etc. It's a really underrated mon imo, more people should use it. Spore is also like almost guaranteed unless they're running Mega Venusaur or Ferrothorn. I have Foul Play so I can break Gengars Subs and hit Bisharp who SD in my face for solid damage.

Slowbro @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Psyshock
- Slack Off
- Calm Mind

Slowbro forms a well known core with Amoonguss, he's pretty much your typical Scald spamming bulky Water. He's one of my only ways to reliably deal with Heatran. He's a tricky mon, on one hand he's forced out easily because of his crippling Dark and Electric weaknesses but on the other hand he's hard to switch in on safely without risking a burn. Sometimes he's not that useful, but he keeps the core going and allows me to outstall stuff like Stallbreaker Mew by burning it with Scald, then outstalling it out of recovery by switching around with Amoonguss. I have Calm Mind just because stuff like CM Magic Guard Clefable can sweep me otherwise.

Tornadus-T @ Assault Vest
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- Heat Wave
- Superpower

I love this set! It looks awkward but it's actually quite a pain to deal with for most people. Basically Tornadus-T gives me utility, coverage and momentum. Knock Off is a must on every team nowadays, and it works especially well when you remove their Leftovers and they're weak to Sand and hazards. Hurricane misses a lot more than I'd like, but Air Slash is just too weak to secure kills when it needs to. It does however do a great job at wrecking Mega Venusaur, Keldeo and Conkeldurr. Heat Wave is something nobody expects for some reason, but I've killed countless Scizor and Ferrothorn with it so I'll take it. Guess they expect U-turn, but I don't need switch momentum when I have the AmoonBro core. Superpower maims Bisharp and T-tar and is quite crucial for Heatran too.

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
IVs: 0 Atk
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Spikes
- Defog
- Roost
- Counter

Skarmory is an important physical wall. It does well in the current metagame with Landorus-T spamming U-turn all over the place. I also can't have too many hazards on my side, even SR is quite crippling so Defog is a must. Counter is literally just so Bisharp doesn't sweep me. I lose Skarmory in the process but it's more than worth the trade usually. My Spikes usually don't stay up for long, but they force a Defog which lets me gain momentum and go from there. Otherwise pretty much the standard set.

475-1.gif

Gallade @ Galladite
Trait: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch

Here's my sweeper of choice, Mega Gallade. Aside from the cool factor it's a really solid sweeper; it has a nice speed tier, solid bulk and sky high attack. There's like two big checks to it running around in OU being Talonflame and Thundurus, both of which my team handles with ease. T-tar + Fighting type in general is like bread and butter. Swords Dance gives me the power to plow through a team with relative ease, while Drain Punch is mostly for Bisharp. You can recover most of your health if they try to weaken you with Sucker Punch for something else. Knock Off and Ice Punch just gives the best overall coverage imo.

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 216 SDef / 40 Spd
IVs: 0 Atk
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Protect
- Fire Blast

This is a bit of a funny set but it gets the job done. Usually Hippowdon is the sand setter of choice for Sand Stall teams, but it's a bit too passive for me so I went with Tyranitar. A Stall team is not complete without a status move, so I figured why not put it on Tyranitar? T-tar often baits out mons like Landorus-T or Rotom-W who really dislike Toxic, and you can follow up with Protect to scout their move. Toxic + Sand + Protect is pure epicness, it just always works with no risk involved. Lastly Fire Blast deals with Steel-types not named Heatran who are of course immune to poison.

So that's the team, ratings and comments are appreciated :)

Hi Liar,

This is a pretty cool team. I like the idea of having a solid defensive core and also a to clean up after the opposing team has been weakened.

I think one of the largest threats to your team is Bisharp. Once Amooguss has spored a Pokemon, Bisharp can simply set-up Sword Dance and then spam Knock Off. At +2, Tyranitar is KO'd by Iron Head while Tornadus-T falls to Sucker Punch. Even Skamory can't directly switch in since Knock Off 2HKOs (+2 252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 231-273 (69.1 - 81.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). Although Skarmory has Counter, it will be heavily weakened in the process of dealing with Bisharp.

Another problem I found are strong Fire-types such as Zard-Y and Heatran. For Heatran your only real switch in is Slowbro, which doesn't really like getting burned or poisoned by Toxic. For Charizard-Y, Tyranitar falls after a bit of prior damage (252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 216+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 300-356 (74.2 - 88.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery). Tornadus is 2HKO'd by Flamethrower and the Sun also reduces Hurricane's accuracy.

A few other Pokemon that look problematic are Landorus with Knock Off (Tornadus is your only real switch-in and doesn't really like Knock Off), Mega-Gardevoir (2HKOs most of your team with Psyshock+Hypervoice+Focus Blast), Mega-Sableye (can set up Calm Minds against most of your team), Manaphy with Psychic (can set up Tail Glow and spam Scald), Gyarados (Sub+Bounce or Crunch variants) , and Kyurem-B.

With this in mind I have a few suggestions. Firstly, I recommend putting Whirlwind over Spikes on Skarmory. Whirlwind allows Skarmory to phaze out potential set-up sweepers, which is huge for not letting Skarmory become set-up fodder. This allows Skarmory to check physical attackers much better, as you no longer have to rely on Counter and can prevent set-up sweepers from setting up to +6. In addition, having Spikes and Defog can be somewhat ineffective since your own Defog will remove your hard-won spikes.

Next, I think you should replace Mega-Gallade with Sub CM Keldeo. Keldeo gives you a win condition like Mega-Gallade but with key fighting and fire-type resistances. These allow Keldeo to check Bisharp and fire-types like Heatran. Importantly, Keldeo does not need to Mega-evolve before bypassing 100+ speed, which helps greatly in checking/revenging faster Pokemon like Landorus, weakened Manaphy, and Mega-Gardevoir. With Calm Mind and Scald, Keldeo also has a decent chance against Mega-Sableye (you can Sub on the predicted Will-o-wisp to avoid the burn). If you like, you can replace Substitute with HP Electric to better handle Gyarados.

On Amoonguss, I think you can try out Clear Smog or Stun Spore over Sludge Bomb. Clear Smog allows Amooguss to take-on set-up sweepers better (most notably Clefable), while Stun Spore cripples common Amoonguss switch-ins such as Latios, Latias, and Charizard. Both help prevent Amoonguss from becoming set-up fodder once it has used Spore.

On Tyranitar, I think you should go for a more physical set, using Stone Edge and Pursuit over Fire Blast and Protect with a Careful Nature. Fire Blast gives Tyranitar poor coverage, which hanpers it in check the special attackers it is suppose to check like Latios, Thunderus. Having a strong STAB Stone Edge allows Charizard to check the aforementioned Pokemon much more easily. In addition, Pursuit allows Tyranitar to trap Latios and Latias, which helps the rest of your team immensely.

As an alternate option, I think you should test putting SR on Skarmory over Defog and running a Choice Scarf Tyranitar. Although you lose Defog, your team isn't very weak to SR with 3 Regenerator users and Spikes aren't very common. With a Choice Scarf set, Tyranitar gains an important speed boost, allowing you to check Pokemon like Charizard-Y and Latios better. In addition, Tyranitar can revenge kill most Pokemon below base 115 speed, giving you a better way to deal with Mega-Gardevoir, Manaphy, and Kyurem-B who might otherwise outspeed and KO you.

Hope this helps!
