Brokenfly Dance

brokenfly dance
a baton pass RMT

introduction
5th gen brought about not only an era of stronger pokemon, but it also brought in a plethora of new boosting moves. The most noticeably useful of these moves include Shell Smash, Quiver Dance, and Gear Change. Being a defensive minded player, Quiver Dance truly appealed to me as a fascinating move. If it was already feared on just one pokemon, namely Ulgamoth, it would be destructive if it was passed in a chain.

team

  • EVs are leaning towards defense to fully utilize the boosts from Quiver Dance.
  • Substitute is a necessary precaution against Dragon Tail/ Red Card if Ingrain cannot be setup, as well as critical hits.

Venomoth (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Shield Dust
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Quiver Dance
- Baton Pass
- Bug Buzz
- Sleep Powder

Quiver Dance should always be used first unless
Sleep Powder should be used when your pass is threatened. Otherwise,
Sleep should really be saved until it is urgently needed.
e.g: Politoed's Perish Song, Tyranitar Stone Edge
-Bug Buzz is a needed option when threatened by priority taunt in the middle of a pass chain.

Side Notes
-Defense EVs survive Rock Slide Life Orb from Doryuuzu if Tyranitar is put to sleep.
-Speed EVs outspeed Max Speed Timid Jolteon, just because.
-Shield Dust helps prevent secondary effects, including flinches, so you don't have to worry about those pesky burns from Scald.
E.g: Rotom Thunderbolt, Ninetales Flamethrower

Lead Matchups

Espeon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Baton Pass

-The main role of Espeon is to reflect phaze moves with Magic Mirror.
-Assist Power has the potential power to sweep with just 2 Butterfly Dances.

Celebi @ Leftovers Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Giga Drain
- Substitute
- Calm Mind

- Typing is extremely important to this team.
Counters common threats to baton passing.

e.g: Leech Seed Nattorei, Rotom-W, Borutorosu *with 2 butterfly dances*
-Giga Drain helps to restore health to take more hits in the future.

Togekiss (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Def / 28 SDef / 184 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Air Slash
- Aura Sphere
- Substitute
- Baton Pass

-Togekiss can utilize the Butterfly Dance Boosts almost immediately.
-Air Slash flinch rate deals with opposing Calm Mind/Bulk Up/ Cosmic Power boosters.
-Aura Sphere is mainly for Tyranitar who would otherwise cause trouble.

Vaporeon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Surf
- Roar
- Acid Armor

-Sets up on most physical attackers with Acid Armor.
-Surf is necessary to take out potential threats.
-Roar is for roaring out slower phazers and pokemon setting up.

e.g: Taunters, Skarmory below 100%

dancing smeargle!

Smeargle (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Ingrain
- Spore
- Butterfly Dance
- Baton Pass

-Sometimes Venomoth fails to pass a butterfly dance, so it is good to keep an alternate.
-Smeargle is the only ingrain passer. Ingrain helps to restore HP from Stealth rocks, and prevent random threats such as Red Card.

THREATS
(not easily countered)

Clear Smog: Be aware that it exists and hope that you have Togekiss out. Countermeasures include swapping one of these pokemon with a steel type.

Haze: Best thing to do is try to KO the user before it can haze or put it to sleep.

Perish Song: Don't be too greedy with passes, and try to get to Togekiss as fast as possible. It should be able to take care of the major perish song users such as Celebi and Politoed.

Sweeping is done between Togekiss, Vaporeon, Celebi , and Espeon *with no ingrain and threatened by phazing if you cannot OHKO the opponent*

Having Togekiss out makes me feel secure because it can pretty much flinch the opponent to death.

EVs changed:

Venomoth can now take a rock slide from doryuuzu in the following case:
Sleep powder misses against Tyranitar while it sets up stealth rock, but hits the second time.

Espeon can now 2hko leftovers thundurus *only to be sent in on a taunt*
Takes thundurus 3hko with timid thunderbolt.

Celebi now outspeeds Timid Jolteon after 1 Butterfly Dance.

Togekiss now outspeeds Timid Starmie after 1 Butterfly Dance.

for the people testing this team, Jolteon seems to be a possible replacement for espeon.
Good for taking hurricanes / thunderbolts and pretty much a beast against rain teams.

Though espeon is valued for its protection against lead taunters and whirlwind without ingrain.

Hello,

I have been using a similar team:

Togekiss (F) @ Lum Berry Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 188 Def / 68 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Nasty Plot
- Baton Pass
- Air Slash
- Roost

Vaporeon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 200 Def / 36 SDef / 24 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Acid Armor
- Scald

Smeargle (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Spore
- Baton Pass
- Ingrain
- Quiver Dance

Espeon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Calm Mind

- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Electric]
Venomoth (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Tinted Lens
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Quiver Dance
- Baton Pass
- Sleep Powder
- Bug Buzz

Mew @ Leftovers
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Barrier
- Amnesia

Often, Mew functions as a lead which is why it is EV'ed to outspeed max speed jolly Tar. The +2 or +4 boost which it often passes is invaluable for further baton passing.

This team peaked #91 on the Pokemon Online server.

Yes, use BP Espeon now that it's legal. Also, try Stored Power on said Espeon. 20 base power with +20 for every boost, then there's STAB. With Butterfly Dance and Acid Armor passes, it can be the best sweeper in the game, falling only to a crit and possibly a Chansey/Blissey.

BP espeon is legal? :) thanks guys.

more rates now that this strategy is completely viable and this team can do much better.
peaked 8th on smogon before i got banned but my account is probably decaying :'(

Super Mario Bro

All we ever look for

Espy easily OHKO's Chansey and Blissey (and can even 2HKO Jirachi) with enough boosts. If you pass it Acid Armor, and a couple of quiver dances, the only thing that takes it down is a priority crit (and I usually switch out of 4X resists to psychic unless I have accumulated an insane amount of boosts).

And ya this team is great. It took me a while to get used to, but I was able to peak pretty high on a couple of servers. The only solid counter to this team is Haze/Perish Song Murkrow. lol

Stored Power Baton Pass Espeon makes this team even better.

This is SMB in training btw.

haha sup! i forgot to tell you i was banned -_-

Anyways, since you have tried the team... do you think jolteon could work anywhere O_O
i mean the flying and electric resistance is nothing to pass on, but I cant see a spot for it...
