Hello, Smogon! Once again, I’m here to improve my main team. Said team works with what I am best with: bulky Pokémon. I don’t like stall (and I find it doesn’t work when I play it in Pokémon), but bulky Pokémon that can take hits just work well for me. While the first version of this team I used in X and Y was good, it had some problems. And it took me forever to modify it since I loved all six members of that team. Especially my Vaporeon since I want to maintain Wish on the team. But, I eventually came up with my fixes. Behold my new and improved Bulky Offense team, updated for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!
Mr. Mole (Excadrill) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
Returning Veteran - Excadrill is here as a bulky wallbreaker/Rapid Spinner. With a 1/4 Stealth Rock resistance and an immunity to Toxic Spikes, there aren’t many better Rapid Spinners in the game. An additional bonus is being immune to the common status moves Toxic and Thunder Wave. STAB Mold Breaker Earthquake takes out many foes, including Gengar and Rotom-Wash. Rock Slide hits what Earthquake can not and Iron Claw is there as an extra cover move. Rapid Spin is there to get rid of Entry Hazards. Exca is holding my favorite new item this Gen: Assault Vest. With no status moves, Exca gets a 50% boost in Sp. Def, which is very useful as his common weaknesses are typically Special.
The Batman (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 40 Def / 224 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Protect
- Ice Fang
- Toxic
Returning Veteran - Once again, The Batman is on my team since he is a fantastic physical wall. Poison Heal Gliscor heals really well, better than Leftovers and it keeps it immune to Frozen, Burn, Sleep, or the rare Paralyze (well, rare for a Ground-type). Earthquake is an excellent STAB and Ice Fang covers nicely. Protect is there to let Toxic Orb do its thing as well as give The Batman a free turn to heal (I love doing that before I switch him out so he has higher HP before leaving the fray and wasting a PP of an opponent’s move). Rounding off the moveset is Toxic, helping me get rid of many bulky Pokémon. Part of me is considering replacing Ice Fang with Knock Off, but I would prefer to keep it so I can fight other Gliscor and some other threats.
Majin Buudra (Goodra) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Dragon Pulse
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower
- Thunderbolt
Returning Veteran - I swear, this is my favorite psuedo-legend of all time. Cute and wonderfully bulky (combined with solid Special Attack), Goodra keeps enemy Pokémon on their toes. Just like Excadrill, Goodra has an Assault Vest, boosting his already excellent Special Defense even higher. Sap Sipper is useful for when I face the occasional Breloom and Smeargle (I’ve killed a few Breloom after it tried to put Goodra to sleep) and pairs greatly with Mega Slowbro. Dragon Pulse is a good STAB move with Sludge Bomb and Flamethrower to help out against Fairies and Steel-type Pokémon. Thunderbolt is on him to handle bulky Water-types that may give me trouble.
Hikari (Chansey) (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Aromatherapy
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunder Wave
- Seismic Toss
Returning Veteran - Just like originally, I chose Chansey over Blissey because I prefer the increased bulk from Eviolite over the continuous recovery of Leftovers (though considering Chansey is OU and Blissey is UU, most of you agree). I’ve seen Garchomp only able to 3HKO with Outrage. Actually, it never got there thanks to Chansey’s egg based variant to Recover, Soft-Boiled. Aromatherapy is there to heal my team of status (though it occasionally heals my Gliscor, but I think about the pros and cons of each use of Aromatherapy, so it rarely hurts me). Thunder Wave is to help slow down enemies since my team isn’t the fastest Pokémon in the game. Finally, since Chansey has bad Special Attack and even worse physical Attack, she has Seismic Toss to hit foes.
Puck (Sylveon) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Heal Bell
- Hyper Voice
Newcomer - This is one of the two new Pokémon for this team. Sylveon is replacing Vaporeon has my Wish user and doubles as a full Cleric since it also has Heal Bell. Like with Chansey, I have to be careful when I heal my team of status due to Gliscor’s Poison Heal, but I’ve gotten good at not using it when I shouldn’t. Protect is for scouting and healing ( Leftovers and/or Wish) of course and Pixilate Hyper Voice is very good.
Since I have Aromatherapy on Chansey, I’m considering replacing Heal Bell with Psyshock, allowing it hit more things, but I would rather wait and see some of your opinions on the matter.
Broseiden (Slowbro) (M) @ Slowbronite
Ability: Oblivious
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Psyshock
- Scald
Newcomer - Behold the God of the Brocean! Mega Slowbro is a much needed change as now I can hit more things specially and it is a good physical wall that can take the things Gliscor can’t and just alleviates the burden from it as well. Broseiden is a standard Mega Slowbro that sets up with Calm Mind, Rests off damage and status (though with two users of Heal Bell/Aromatherapy, I could easily change it to Slack Off. Again, I wouldn’t mind hearing some opinions), and has a pseudo-mixed attacker with STAB Psyshock and Scald (which furthers my immense physical bulk if I get the burn chance).
Wow, Excadrill is the only one who isn't pink or purple. This greatly amuses me.
The team’s overall goal is to just take hits while I launch my own attacks, with Sylveon and Chansey healing their teammates. This fits my personal playstyle which enjoys switching and doesn’t work well with fragile Pokémon. Also, I tend to enjoy it when my opponents can’t seem to knock anything out. The defense type combination works fairly well, with the only total weakness being Ice, since I have two weaknesses (Gliscor and Goodra) but only one resist (Mega Slowbro). This isn't too bad since there are very few physical Ice attacks in OU, so Chansey and Sylveon's special bulk compensates.
I’ve done a few test matches and the team seems to be working well. And if I turn out to be wrong, well, I will still have Scizor and Vaporeon in reserve.
My normal restrictions apply in that it needs to be easy to make on a Generation VI game card, especially Y and Alpha Sapphire, and no legendaries.
Again, thank all of you for your time and suggestions.
