[OVERVIEW]

Butterfree is the only Pokemon in RBY to both have access to the coveted "Double Powder" combination and an immunity to Earthquake. This lets it come in on Earthquakes from the likes of Golem and Sleep Powder. After fulfilling its primary role of sleep, Butterfree can theoretically apply pressure with Stun Spore and Psychic.

However, Butterfree finds extremely stiff competition in Venomoth and Exeggcute. The former outspeeds Nidoking and Pinsir and Speed ties tier-king Mr. Mime. The latter has more defensive utility as a check to Electrode, Venomoth, and Mr. Mime. Additionally, Butterfree's offensive presence is lackluster due to its lack of STAB moves as well as mediocre offensive stats. It also has a bad defensive typing, with crippling weaknesses to common Fire-, Electric-, Ice-, and especially Rock-type attacks, notably being OHKOed by Moltres’s Fire Blast. This limits Butterfree’s utility greatly, rendering it generally useless after it puts something to sleep.

[SET]
name: Double Powder
move 1: Sleep Powder
move 2: Stun Spore
move 3: Psychic
move 4: Psywave

[SET COMMENTS]

Crippling foes with Sleep Powder is Butterfree's primary reason to be used. Stun Spore pairs with Sleep Powder well, allowing Butterfree to threaten status even after inflicting sleep, and it is one of the most reliable ways to spread paralysis, as it hits the Ground-types that would normally render Thunder Wave ineffective. Psychic pressures slower Poison-type Pokemon such as a paralyzed Nidoking and Venomoth. Psywave is Butterfree’s strongest neutral attack against Psychic-types and specially bulky Pokemon like Mr. Mime, Drowzee, Abra, and Moltres. However, it is a wildly inconsistent move due to its awful accuracy of 79.03%, as well as its varying damage output.

Butterfree’s small movepool leaves few other options. Mega Drain is its strongest option versus Rock-types such as Golem and Kabutops. However, it is generally not worth it in most matchups. Toxic makes it less vulnerable to Wrappers such as Dragonair and Pinsir. Hyper Beam is Butterfree's strongest physical attack, allowing it to deal decent damage to opposing Psychic-types more consistently than Psywave.

Butterfree can function as a sleep lead or mid-game utility Pokemon with Sleep Powder, putting something that it can take a hit from, such as Seadra, to sleep. After inflicting status, Butterfree is relegated to absorbing status as fodder. It struggles against Fire-types such as Charizard, Moltres, and Rapidash, meaning that Water- and Rock-types are exceptional teammates. Blastoise and Golem are great examples, taking both Fire- and Rock-type moves with ease. Nidoking is another good partner, as it can take out the aforementioned Fire- as well as Rock-type Pokemon with Rock Slide and Earthquake, and it’s able to check Electrode due to its Ground typing.

When looking at Butterfree, one immediately draws comparison to Venomoth. They have access to both Sleep Powder and Stun Spore, as well as Psychic-type coverage. However, Venomoth nearly always has the upper edge, due to its higher Speed tier letting it outspeed targets that Butterfree is unable to, such as Nidoking, Kabutops, and Kingler. Butterfree’s damage output is somewhat underwhelming, meaning that Butterfree generally finds it hard to make any progress after putting something to sleep. It’s typing is also very abusable, making it weak to Fire-, Electric-, and especially Rock-types. This also makes it weak to one of the most common moves in Blizzard.

Despite these flaws, Butterfree does have a minor niche over Venomoth due to its Flying-type. This lets it be immune to Ground-types instead of being weak to them, as well as taking neutral damage against Psychic-types. However, this is not enough to make Butterfree worthwhile, and it should generally not be a first consideration for most teams, as Venomoth nearly always does better at its role.
This structure is a bit problematic. Butterfree is its own Pokemon; thus, you should first focus on what Butterfree is. This is partly why we're scheduling a Partial Rewrite on the UU analysis, as these types of comparisons often force another analysis to be "mandatory reading". By doing this structure, you've lost your reader hook, directed them somewhere else (which they have to read if they still insist on using Butterfree), and left out the meat. Just because it has heavy competition and is arguably outclassed does not mean we shouldn't do our due diligence of explaining how the Pokemon works and establishing its identity. You're not inherently wrong for taking this route, as discussion on a Pokemon like Butterfree, Venusaur, Moltres, etc frequently ends up being this way, but it also belies what we aim to do when analysing a Pokemon when these talking points are used in C&C.

For an example of why this can be problematic, look at this QC I left on UU Moltres where we had to restructure at least half of the analysis to be about Moltres itself. No disrespect to Volk, as he was similarly misguided at the time and cleaned it up after; it's a great analysis now. It's just a good example of why I'm ranting so much here.

The best time to introduce a "this is outclassed" comparison is after you have already explained the Pokemon itself. Here's a rough structure that I would personally recommend;
  • Butterfree is a Ground-immune sleeper (the only one in the game, in fact) that has access to Psychic, Mega Drain, and Stun Spore. This forms its identity as a Pokemon: it wants to switch in on something like Golem's Earthquake and get uncontested sleep off. It then wants to mix up the opponent with a Psychic / Stun Spore 50:50.
  • However, it also has mediocre Speed and Special, which means that once it's done its job, it's often death fodder and doesn't really do much.
  • This leads to it being in heavy competition with Venomoth for the role, as it outspeeds Nidoking, ties Mr. Mime, and has better Special. This is when you can begin explaining why we go to Venomoth first.
This way, you let the reader interested in the Pokemon not get buzzkilled immediately while getting information on the Pokemon's use in the tier. Then they eventually face the music of "this is kinda outclassed bro" and can then choose to read on or move on. It's just a more effective structure for what we aim to do. This is especially important when Venomoth and Butterfree do have big differences.

Sorry to tear into this so much, but it's good to learn about this now rather than when this has already hit QC.

Butterfree holds a unique niche as a dual powder user that is immune to Ground-type moves. Butterfree is the only Pokemon in RBY to have access to both the coveted "Double Powder" combination as well as an immunity to Earthquake. (Nothing wrong with your sentence, just making it sell the mon more and sound more enthusiastic. Feel free to hmu on Discord if there's a problem.) This lets it come in on Ground-type moves from the likes of Golem for a|nearly uncontested sleep or paralysis. (Not truly uncontested since the moves can miss, or they can switch in a status'd mon and Butterfree cant really threaten status'd Pokemon) After this, Butterfree can put pressure on the opponent through means of access to Stun Spore and Psychic, allowing it to gain a sense of unpredictability. After this, Butterfree can further apply pressure through means of access to Stun Spore and Psychic, allowing it to potentially pose a threat even after fulfilling its primary role of spreading Sleep. (I wouldn't call Butterfree "unpredictable" ever, its a very linear mon that does the same shit every time. I also think this sentence helps to stop people from using Sleep then just sacking the mon, that happens on ladder all the time.)

However, Butterfree finds extremely stiff competition with Venomoth and Exeggcute. The former has a higher Speed tier, outspeeding foes that Butterfree is unable to, such as like Nidoking and Pinsir, as well as letting it speed-tying speed tie tier-king Mr. Mime. This Speed difference is incredibly important, as it also means Venomoth can shut down Butterfree as well. (While Venomoth does outspeed Butterfree, Venomoth doesn't really want to waste its Sleep on Butterfree and Butters can threaten back with Psychic and Stun Spore.) The latter has more defensive utility, and more use mid-game as a check to Electrode, Venomoth, and Mr. Mime. Additionally, Butterfree’s power is lackluster, due to both of its STABs hitting off of its awful Attack stat, and it’s Special stat being decent at most. Additionally, Butterfree's offensive presence is lackluster, due to its lack of STAB moves as well as mediocre offensive stats. (Butterfree does not have a single STAB move in its movepool. Yeah.) It also has a bad defensive typing, with a crippling weakness to common Fire-, Electric-, Ice-, and especially Rock-type coverage. This limits Butterfree’s utility greatly, as it is generally useless after it puts something to sleep. Overall, Butterfree faces far too much competition in its role, and is generally not recommended for use on most conventional RBY NU teams. (Doesn't feel needed, fluff.)

Sleep Powder is Butterfree's primary reason to be used, allowing Butterfree to cripple opposing foes with potentially fatal (reword to something else or remove, this wording implies the status is a KO, including paralysis) status. Stun Spore is one of the most reliable ways to spread paralysis, as it hits the Ground-types that would normally block paralysis from Thunder Wave users render Thunder Wave ineffective. (less words, better description) The existence of Sleep Clause also means that Stun Spore pairs with Sleep Powder well, allowing Butterfree to threaten status even after already inflicting sleep. (I don't like this sentence but I also don't know how to fix it, I think you could possibly merge it into the previous sentence with "Stun Spore pairs well with Sleep Powder and is one of the..., consider doing that) Psychic allows Butterfree to pressure slower Poison-type Pokemon such as a paralyzed Nidoking and Venomoth. Psywave is Butterfree’s strongest neutral attack against Psychic-types and specially bulky Pokemon like Mr. Mime, Drowzee, Abra, and Moltres. (you can argue Ninetales but Psychic does hit the 60s with enough consistency to prefer it) However, it is a wildly inconsistent move due to its awful accuracy of 79.03%, as well as wildly inconsistent varying damage output.

(I don't know how much of an impact its Speed really has, it doesn't even outrun Kingler. They're big targets, but in my experience it absorbs a special hit before landing sleep; eg. Seadra can't 2HKO with Surf) After inflicting status, Butterfree is able to be sacked is largely status fodder, preventing further progress from the opponent's status move users. letting it absorb opponent’s status in the process. Butterfree struggles against Fire-types such as Charizard, Moltres, and Rapidash, meaning that Water- and Rock-types are exceptional teammates.

Butterfree’s small movepool leaves few other options. Mega Drain is Butterfree’s strongest option versus Rock-types such as Golem and Kabutops. However, it is generally not worth it in most matchups. Toxic allows Butterfree to be less vulnerable to partial trapping users such as Dragonair and Pinsir. Hyper Beam is Butterfree's strongest physical attack, allowing it to deal decent damage to opposing Psychic-types like Mr. Mime more consistently than Psywave., notably

Butterfree can function as a sleep lead or mid-game utility Pokemon, putting the opponent’s lead to sleep with Sleep Powder, as well as a more mid-game oriented sleep user, putting something slower than it, such as Clefable, to sleep. (spacing) Blastoise and Golem make for a great partners because of this, due thanks (more definitively positive wording, these are amazing mons) to their ability to take Fire- and Rock-type moves with ease. Nidoking is another good partner, as it can take out the aforementioned Fire- and Rock-type Pokemon with Rock Slide and Earthquake, as well as being able to check Electrode due to its Ground-type.

[OVERVIEW]

Butterfree is the only Pokemon in RBY to have access to both the coveted "Double Powder" combination as well as an immunity to Earthquake. This lets it come in on Ground-type moves from the likes of Golem for nearly uncontested sleep and use Sleep Powder. After this, Butterfree can further apply pressure through means of access to with Stun Spore and Psychic, allowing it to potentially pose a threat threaten the opposing team even after fulfilling its primary role of spreading Sleep putting one foe to sleep (given the sleep clause, you can't really spread sleep. also, status terms are never capitalized).

However, Butterfree finds extremely stiff competition with Venomoth and Exeggcute. The former has a higher Speed tier, outspeeding foes that Butterfree is unable to like outspeeds Nidoking and Pinsir, as well as letting it (remove comma) and Speed ties tier-king the king of the tier: (I'm not too familiar with RBY NU, so if 'tier-king' is a commonly used term, then you can keep it) Mr. Mime. The latter has more defensive utility as a check to Electrode, Venomoth, and Mr. Mime. Additionally, Butterfree's offensive presence is lackluster (remove comma) due to its lack of strong STAB moves as well as its mediocre offensive stats. (remove extra period) It also has a bad defensive typing, with a crippling weakness to common Fire-, Electric-, Ice-, and especially (If the example was a Rock-type attack, I would keep the especially, but since it's a Fire-type attack, I would delete it) Rock-type attacks, notably being OHKOed by Moltres’s Fire Blast. This limits Butterfree’s utility greatly, as it is generally useless after it puts something to sleep. (could you maybe reword this? You say above that Butterfree has uses outside of sleeping, and the set itself is even called double powder because it has that use outside of sleep. Saying it's useless after sleep sort of goes against the rest of the analysis)
