Round hasn't finished but for the sake of adding some flavor to the thread I want to first note the amount of times we have seen Slowbro thus far in the round, which even though it isn't that many, it still feels abnormal. To me it has been quite a pleasant surprise as I've always considered Slowbro to be quite a decent glue for teams that require that physical sponge.

We have mostly seen the combination which is a team that has existed since ancient times when Amoonguss was ran over Celebi on that slot. It honestly feels like a cool countermeasure for the wave of Conkeldurr HO teams we're seeing recently as Slowbro very much manages to cockblock 4/6 in Conk, Dragonite, Jirachi and Chomp, whereas Volc and Starmie can be dealt with using Tyranitar and Terrakion.

I have personally used this team before to good success (it's what I spammed in BWLT to qualify mostly) so I can vouch for its prowess. Terrakion sand in general is so damn strong, and very little wants to switch into it. I, however, acknowledge that the spikes match-up can get a bit tricky given that the team is very grounded and spinning with exca tends to be a hurdle more than anything.

This team also doesn't like to face rain and it has quite a hard time dealing with the likes of Tentacruel and some variants of Keldeo as they force Celebi into a recovery position. It is possible to run the Amoonguss variant in this day and age, but I haven't been a fan of it for a while, and it also worsens your match-up into defensive landorus.

Interested in seeing more developments.

I feel like Amoong makes the Landorus match-up better since it's not weak to u-turn, but it makes the rain match-up worse because you lose your only scald absorb vs Scalding Politoed and Tentacruel, and a burned Amoong can't beat Specs Keld. The Tenta rain match-up with the celebi version is generally fine, but Starmie in Rain can force some awkward turns (Celebi can eat hits in a pinch, but it's luck prone and if you lose Celebi you probably lose the game).

I like that team a lot and have used it in many tour sets this year: my only loss with it is vs HP Bug Keld which is . . . yeah . . .

I'm generally a fan of Slowbro. It feels so bad to use it against Rotom, but it is a good hard answer to a lot of physicals. The main one is Conk, but it manages to stuff things like Mamo and Terrak while being solid against Chomp and Dnite as well.

Slowbro is a perfectly adequate bulky water option but I think we shouldn't overhype it. Big discussion on discord the last couple of days about it being approximately as good if not better than Rotom-W on Terrakion teams and I feel like that is very premature.

Its for sure good against Conkeldurr but there is certainly a trade-off there against the wider metagame and adds weaknesses to Spikes / opposing Rotom-W / etc. Your own Rotom-W does a looooot of the heavy lifting into opposing Skarmory teams, and without it you either need to brute force with SD Excadrill or hope the opponent stays in on a Tyranitar Fire Blast. I have seen Tyranitar Excadrill Terrakion Landorus +2 get dogwalked by a competently played, basic Spikes Skarmory more times than I can count and Slowbro doubles down that weakness even further.

A little talked about downside of both Slowtwins is being Pursuit trappable and how that throws inconsistency into the mix, especially given many Slowbro teams don't have anything else to lure and chip Tyranitar. Simply: its a massive ask for Slowbro to beat Landorus-T / Excadrill + Pursuit Tyranitar. Yes, it helps that Tyranitar tends to run less attack now, but Slowbro does frequently get into headache Crunch vs Pursuit situations vs the #2 most used mon in the game in a way that is pretty risk free for the Tyranitar user. Look at the team above: there is nothing else there an opponent would need to keep their Tyranitar healthy for, so you can just rip it off a Landorus-T U-turn every time and at minimum force the Slowbro low, if not remove it outright with minimal chip:

Set selection is rough as well - Slowbro really wants 2 items and 6 moves. Both Leftovers and Rocky Helmet feel essential - when you run Helmet it is unironically easier to Pursuit trap because U-turn + Rocks + Sand chip gets you into Tyranitar range more quickly, but without Helmet you're a pretty mid answer to the physicals. Slack Off and Scald are a given, and then you want Ice Beam or TWave for Dragonite, and Psychic and Flamethrower both have upsides. You can never truly fit everything you want and every Slowbro set is left feeling lacking. Thunder Wave gets dropped pretty frequently for more coverage but then you can't touch Alakazam, Reuniclus etc.

Its a fine mon and its kinda impossible for Tyranitar / GroundFlyer / Excadrill / Terrakion + 2 water resists to ever be bad - theres 1000 viable combinations within that framework. It can be Rotom-W, Slowbro, Keldeo, Celebi, Amoonguss, Tangrowth, Breloom, and probably others. I think Rotom-W is, and probably always will be, the premier Water-type for the archtype simply due to Levitate and pivot moves being huge consistency boosters alongside Terrakion and spin Excadrill, but the Slowbro variants are certainly having a moment - lets see if it continues

Slowbro is one of my favorite pokemon but I also find it very awkward to fit on teams. Like Peng said, if you get the 4 right moves for your match-up then he can go to work, but depending on what you dropped you struggle against the things you were supposed to check.
I find Cresselia to have more utility overall even though it also has the 4 move-syndrome, you can check pretty much the same things but are less weak to spikes and can actually beat Ttar 1-1 with the helmet while still being able to check the big dragons

I'm happy with how the first round concluded. I'm amazed at the amounts of originality that were witnessed during this round, which is a pleasant surprise given there were a lot of assumptions about BW being solved. I can only hope players will keep on exploring the metagame for newer trends to arise.

This does not surprise me at all, as this is probably the order of viability in which I would place these teams. The most surprising outlier for me would be the presence of Scizor, which has seen a surprisingly big usage.

Sand Spikes remains as dominant as it has ever been, and people have also used the hell out of Conkeldurr offense, probably one of the most popular teams in the last year.

However, as predictable as a statistic as this was, there were some other surprises that I got from the first round. I'd like to point out some interesting builds I've noticed in the first round instead of stirring the pot with data we already know.

It was used in this match-up. Honestly speaking, this is probably the best pairing that this kind of sun could wish. Monai was at a great disadvantage from the very first turn given his team doesn't have the offensive prowess to overpower Cresselia, Volcarona and Chansey (Alakazam lacked Psyshock). Setting up hazards was also a hurdle given Xatu blocked both setters.

However, one thing a team of this caliber demonstrates is how scary some threats like Cresselia and Volcarona can be under sun if other weathers aren't there to put them on a leash.

Reyscarface's application of it was very interesting. In this build, Ninetales features a Fire Spin set meant to trap Politoed. What I particularly liked about this game was the clever pivotting that allowed Rey to regain his footing in this match given that he had no water resist. That early Fire Spin miss was detrimental.

Real FV13 delighted us with a very unique take in sun, which certainly exudes an air of Sand Spikes team. Still, although unorthodox, the team looks quite solid at first glance.

Next up there were some interesting characters popping up.


It was used 7 times this round, which, in the grand scheme of things, isn't that much, but it's a surprising number for sure.
We have mostly seen it in the aforementioned sun teams. However, the most interesting application of it was Finchinator's with a Final Gambit set, which gave him a quite nice early advantage in that game.


It was only used once, but the way it was wielded was very interesting. In Ussewa's match against Hiro, Umbreon had a crucial role in employing its bulk to pivot, Baton Pass and allow free entry to some of the threats in the team, which was very cool to see.

The big 6 remain the most used team of the round. However, we see some interesting developments as regards the other teams:

Tentacruel rain usage has skyrocketted surprisingly in a time where it was considered to go on a decline. I mean, rain as a whole is seeing a lot more usage and effectiveness which, for someone who has experienced this tier for many years, is a very normal development.

We're also seeing that Conk offense is seeing a lot of usage with the particularity that it's the Kyurem Black version of it that's triumphing over the Volcarona versions. I personally think that Kyurem Black provides a better edge vs Rain matchups, but you do sacrifice a crucial Latios abuser. It is, however, quite interesting to see these versions being used more.

The most interesting development:



Our beloved slug has been the talk of the moment. Variants of GastroMag have been on the rise, probably as a response to physical offense usage, which these kind of teams tend to prey on.

It is also interesting to note that Gastrodon had seen a decline in its use over Seismitoad previously given that the frog does provide chances of role compression within your team. However, now the slug has regained the community's love, so it will be interesting to see how these kind of teams develop.

Sun had a similar usage as last round, with a 60% winrate just like last time. To me this indicates that confidence in this style isn't really there, but it can be quite effective when given the best conditions.

Cool analysis posho, but I'm worried that we might be over playing Gastro's rise as it collectively only has about 4% usage (comparable to Forretress and breloom), though I think the gastro mag teams definitely have their place. Personally I was surprised to see Garchomp with such substantial usage. It's fallen out of the top 10 consideration for most good players on paper, but is maintaining >20% usage for now. Could be worth considering that it's seen so much more usage than Terrakion which is currently being gassed in vrs?

I think Garchomp's usage shouldn't be surprising personally. It never has a flashy performance in games necessarily unless it's like Scarf vs HO or is against a very slow team with tepid answers, but he is one of the biggest reasons you can't sit on your ass when it comes to speed tiers on your team, and SR SD on HO almost always gets something done. He also tends to soft but nuanced defensive utility especially on HO.

While maybe not as much as Dragonite, I'd argue Chomp is always good on HO and should be considered: we've seen a fair number of Lando on HO as well which has its interesting properties of course (not dragon-weak so sp.def lets you eat a hit from latios, uturn, fight resist and ground immune), but Chomp is almost strictly better than Terrak on HO as an SR lead imo. The volt immune seems small but is oddly annoying to Rotom and Thundurus, and it's more of an immediate threat than Terrak typically by threatening to rip a +2 Outrage very early and force in a latios on teams lacking a keld or terrak (which can be abused with a free Uturn on Jirachi or outright removing Latios with Scizor).

On non-HO, chomp also has a place: being SR-resistant and having just flexible enough of a movepool means it's sometimes seen with magic guard partners like Zam or Reun and forgoing spin either with SD 3 Atks or Mixed to force the issue against spikers. Scarf on Sands with concrete skarmory plans can be solid too.

I don't think putting Chomp as a top 10 mon in the tier is that insane personally: he's like Starmie and Jirachi (but to a smaller degree) in that he really sneaks his way onto teams sometimes. Putting him below Terrak is pretty wild to me, if anything.

This round has felt notably more conservative in its approach, probably given the fact that we're close to reaching the middle point of this tournament Swiss and people strive to bring the best teams possible.

Big 6 remains on the throne like every round. One thing to note is that rain seems to have taken a bit of a backseat. People have opted for more bulky-ish sands this round with a sudden surge of Monai's psy-spam team. Sand + Magic Guard + Spikes remains as dominant as it has ever been, and people, including less experienced players, have picked up on that fact.

I'm also happy to note, and I know I meme a lot about this, but I like that Slowbro teams have been seeing a lot more use. The specific combination above is the team in which it finds itself the most.

I think in general, and I want to add Gastrodon into the conversation, although these bulky waters remain not as popular as their tier mates in the higher ranks, they're still highly effective in that they are a clear response to the surge of weatherless hyper offense. In all three rounds those type of teams stand out in that weathered crowd.

This was an interesting way to start off these series. Both teams weatherless, and Raiza was carrying a pretty unorthodox team, which matched up well against Fakes' weatherless hyper offense.

What I found peculiar about g2 is that both players reversed their standard team use. Fakes is clearly using a more creative team with double lati + clef, which is a combination you do not see every day. This match was pretty intense to watch live. Definitely an insane tug-o'-war between Clefable and Rotom-Wash.

And finally g3. This was just as intense as the last one. Both players carry pretty standard teams with one or two outliers (SPDef Rocks tran or Recover TR Reuni). It came down to the wire, though I have to admit that the ending of it was pretty sad. Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to watch this live.

Definitely one of the highlights of the round. These two long-standing players have been around for more than a decade. They both hail from the same Spanish community and have A LOT of history together both as comrades and adversaries on the Pokemon field. Their background and history on this site makes this a very exciting match to watch!

Although lopsided under the general perspective, Sammy is no slouch and he has had decent scores in seasonals. These two players have already faced each other in ROAPL, once during regular season and then in the finals, with one win for each player. Now, in BW Mastermind, they seek to settle the score. Will the underdog SammyCe be able to prove he's got what it takes to beat a very established player in Monai?

This to me is a very exciting match to witness as someone who has been playing BW actively since 2014-2015, since these two players have been around for quite a long time and participated in a multitude of BW tournaments, including SPL. Funnily enough, both Evuelf and sugarhigh have been to the BW CUP finals stage and they both fell short against GaryTheGengar and SoulWind respectively. Very interested to see what teams they will bring!

This isn't exactly your veteran vs veteran clash, but there's a certain excitement to this match in that they are relatively newer faces in the BW scene. Both very good players with decent results to boot who still have a lot to prove certainly. They've made it this far into the 3-0 pool, so we'll see who will stumble and who will keep their consistency in what seems to be a very stacked pool of players.

Another very anticipated match in that these two made it quite high up in the tournament power rankings. There isn't much to be said other than these two have a long history of very consistence showings in tournaments. Fakes has won many side-tournaments whereas Star won two invitationals already. In terms of results and skill both of these players are packed and I'm fairly certain this is THE highlight of this round.

This week I have been a bit more busy, so I wasn't able to pay close attention to matches that happened during weekdays, but some of the series were very entretaining to watch. I've said it already, but I'm very happy with how this tournament is turning out.

To me, the biggest shock comes in the big 6 finally being dethroned. Hyper offense takes the round by storm, while rain comes back into the radar, which feels like much different to last round where people seemed more conservative in their approach.

The biggest surprise of this tournament probably still remains the surge in usage of Dababy Gastro Magnezone stalls which are really hard to break unless you have some dedicated threats such as LO Alakazam or HP Grass Keldeo.

Other than this, the metagame has remained unmoved for the most part. Early rounds saw players testing the waters with interesting concepts, but naturally people will lean toward safer builds as we approach the later stages of this tournament.

A lot of very interesting match-ups this round. What I adore mostly about this round is the fact that we're seeing a lot of old players who main other older gens this late into the tournament. We're seeing a mix of new BW players, old gen players and already established mainers duking it out in this tournament, all with their unique approaches to the metagame.

Sadly, this round doesn't contain any super highlight as the top ranked players aren't matched against one another. I dare say though that the 3-1 pool looks absolutely stacked. I'm pretty sure we're going to get some insane match-up next round with the 4-1's
