Keep in mind that we have no pre-evolutions for this design--this may be helpful when thinking about names that fit this Pokemon's flavor!

-----

CAP 29 So Far

-----

If you are inspired by the winning art design and have come up with a good and unique name you'd like the CAP to be known by, please submit your idea here and we will put it up for a vote against all other users' ideas. Final submissions must conform to the submission rules, so please read them carefully. Breaking the posting rules can also result in disqualification.

RULES:

Legal name submissions must meet the following standards
  • Names must start with a capital letter.
  • Names cannot be longer than 12 letters.
  • Names can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 1-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Period (.)
    • Colon (:)
    • Space
  • No more than two capital letters can be included in the name, and capital letters cannot be consecutive.
  • A maximum of two non-letters can be included in the name, and a maximum of one non-letter of each type can be included (ie. You can't have two numbers, or two apostrophes, but you could have one number and one apostrophe)

Names will not be slated if they are:
  • completely unrelated to the design
  • the name of an existing Pokemon
  • silly (puns are fine)
  • based primarily on memes
  • meant to inflame, intimidate, or cause controversy

WIPs
Work In Progress (WIP) Names can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Names can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with lists of Names. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP names by posting them repeatedly, or making minor spelling changes of a letter or two. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all names by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Final Submissions
Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person. Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

Name Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread announcing that final submissions are open. Any Final Submission posted prior to the Moderator announcement post will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that there is some time for discussion and that all submitters have equal opportunity to post Final Submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Please make a new post after the CAP moderator announcement for Final Submissions. Do not edit a previous post prior to the announcement to make it a Final Submission. All posts prior to the announcement post will be ignored for purposes of making the Name Poll.

Final submissions must provide one sentence (25 words maximum) explaining the etymology of the name.

Final submissions must provide a common English pronunciation. The common pronunciation can be made in whatever format you feel best conveys the pronunciation to most English speakers. (You may optionally also provide an IPA pronunciation. For information about IPA and processing words into IPA read this guide: IPA For English. There are also numerous phonetic translation tools online that can help.)

Format
Name Final Submissions must be posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • The Name submission in bold.
  • A blank line
  • A one line description of the etymology of the name or why it is appropriate for our Pokemon. (25 words maximum)
  • A blank line
  • "Pronounced: <common English pronunciation>"
  • "IPA: <IPA pronunciation>" (optional)
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:
Final Submission

Syclant

A combination of "Icicle" + "Ant".

Pronounced: "SICKLE-ant"
IPA: sɪkəlænt

This name was originally submitted by Lawman on the very first CAP project. It is simple, elegant, and easy to pronounce (even if you are pronouncing it wrong), which is why it was chosen as the official name for CAP1!

Meowseum

A combination of meow and museum. This mon has so much regality that I think something that ties it into a museum works well. It's not just art, but the showcasing of art.

Pronounced "ME-ow-see-um"

WIP

Outlion

A combination of outline, out, and lion. The painting mane it has literally outlines the drawing. "Out" also implies that its a lone wolf, which helps with the moody Dark-type aura it's got going on.

Pronounced "OWT-lie-on"

Masterpuss

Masterpiece + puss ( A way of saying cat, aka puss in boots)

Everyone in this thread must prepare themselves, some of us have spent the last week theorising names. I personally don't have the creativity of others but I feel like Masterpuss can be a solid contender due to its simplicity and funnyness, open to any feedback.

WIP (1/3)

Manticolor

A combination of manticore (a mythological beast with the body of a lion and the tail of a snake, often depicted as having extremely potent venom, which matched CAP29’s design very well) and color.

Pronounced man-tih-CUH-lurr

WIP (2/3)

Acrylicore

Similarly to the last name, this name is a combination of manticore and acrylic, a type of paint that is one of the most common media in painting.

Pronounced uh-KRILL-ih-korr

WIP (3/3)

Guernicore

A portmanteau of Guernica (arguably one of Pablo Picasso’s most famous works; Gravity Monkey cited the works of Picasso as an inspiration for the design, so I ran with that) and manticore.

Pronounced GARE-nuh-korr

A combination of Purr and Surrealism( Art with unnatural or irrational imagery meant to stimulate thought, perfect for an odd design that's meant to use calm mind)

WIP (2/3)

Pawcasso

Pronounced: Pah-CAH-soe
A combination of Paw in Picasso (a leading artist in Cubism, one of CAP 29's design's inspirations)

WIP (3/3)

Picarnivas

Pronounced: PEE-cahr-NEE-vahs
A mix of Picasso, carnivore, and canvas.

Illustregis

"illustration" + "regis" (Latin for "kingly"), and it sounds like "illustrious" (although the stress is off)

Pronounced: "ih-luh-STRAY-jis"
IPA: ɪləstɹeɪdʒɪs

Names for legendaries and mythicals tend to be less punny and have more "weight", so I went with a name with this feel to it. This name emphasizes the lion as "noble" and as the "king of beasts".

Raigazo

"Raion" (Japanese for lion) + "Gazo" (Japanese for image)

Pronounced: RY-gah-zo

IPA: raɪgazo

Kinda based off Raikou, which is a combination of the Japanese words for lion and lightning.

Temperador

Tempera (a type of painting that's been used since the ancient egypt)+Temperamental (moody in spanish, but its mostly used for people that gets easily angered)+Emperador (emperor in spanish).

Pronounced: Tehm-PEH-rah-DOHR

Lots of legendary pokemon have names that mix various languages, so i figured it would be nice to use the same logic on this name, using two words in spanish (mainly because its my main language), i believe it makes for a somewhat intimating yet elegant name.

WIP

Maneframe

from "mane" (the long fur around a male lion's neck and shoulders) and "frame" (as in the portrait frame that is around this CAP's neck and shoulders).

Pronounced "Mayn-fraym"
IPA: meɪnfreɪm

WIP

Pictocore

Picto + Manticore

“Picto” as a prefix means “to paint,” and this lion has always stricken me as a Manticore type creature.

I’ll elaborate more in the morning but wanted to get this in here ASAP.

Tempurra

Purr + Tempera (A type of paint)

Pronounced: "Tem-Purr-A"

Just wanted to go with a pretty simple name for now, although I very likely will end up changing it to something a bit more complex, conisdering how we are going to be treating this mon as a legendary.

English translation of 王立ぢ: a phonetic pun combining of Ōritsu 王立 (royal) and Suji 筋 (muscle), in reference to its regal lion appearance and massive upper body muscles

A combination of Dorian Grey and leo. It's also a localization of ドレオグレイ, as all mythicals retain their Japanese names in English.

Abstracat

From "abstract art" + "cat".

Pronounced: AB-struh-cat

WIP (2/3)

Kaigado

From "kaiga" (絵画) + " gadō" (画道), both Japanese for traditional Japanese painting. Also includes a pun of "ō" (王の), meaning king, similar to Abomasnow's Japanese name "Yukinoh". Given that we're aiming for a sort of legendary/mythical, trying to make a universal name was the aim of this Japanese-rooted idea.

Pronounced: Keye-GAH-doh

Ablion

Abstract/Prefix Ab + Lion, and Abura (油) + Lion (ライオン)

Pronounced: "AB-ly-ohn"

WIP (2/3)

Aberion

Abstract/Aberration + Lion, and Abura (油) + Lion (ライオン)

Pronounced: "a-BUH-ry-ohn"

The vast majority of Legendary Pokemon and 100% of Mythics are given the same name in both languages. I tried to copy that with my name here, making a name that works differently in both English and Japanese, but also works in both. Just need to narrow down the spelling of it.

For the name itself: Abstract is an art that spawned from Cubism. Abura is Japanese for oil. For the first spelling, Ab is a prefix such as in "Abnormal" or "Abstract". For the second, Aberration means it deviates from the normal. Overall, its a blend of art, oil, and non-normalcy (Since it is technically not a Lion, but a Chimera)

WIP

Artleo

Pronounced: "art-LEE-oh"

I think I'll go to the Talonflame school of naming things and see how that works out. A simple combination of art + leo.

Lionart

Also going to the Talonflame school of naming things. Just slapping together lion and art, in addition to sounding like "lionheart".

Pronounced: "LY-on-art"
