Bird with knife :)

Main inspiration is the bearded vulture, who are a vulture species that eat bones, as well as some butcher inspo via the cleaver/knife, also a bit of corvid inspo due to it being a bird of prey that uses tools, in this case a knife, and caveman imagery, with tools made of bones, a collection of bones, and a body with colors reminiscing of a caveman's pelt

Further refinement of the banker vulture griffon concept. I think I'm happy with everything except the tail, though I'm thinking of tweaking some of the colors some more for visual interest. I'll probably deal with that when I clean up the lineart but I can do with a few suggestions on what to end of the tail with that wouldn't seem forced, along with general feedback on how to keep this bad boy from being too cluttered and overdesigned (which I already feel it might be a tad, that's just me tho lol).

I guess I’m gonna color this one, which I mean if I mess up it’s really gonna suck since there’s no Undo button for paper and pencil.

It’s got a kind of lumbering gait since it should be too heavy to properly fly, but it’s decent at soaring for great distances due to the surface area of its wings and tail feathers (which are curled since I ran out of paper).

Pivoting to an alternate design, a Jacana “Tank” with its many multiple creepy legs and tank treads patterns.

I call this design Hellbird:

Hellbird-41.jpg

This is meant to be an evil demon lord, with a skull head and a scar where its heart has been cut out. Kinda dark I guess, but then again, that's our typing lol :D Like summoned demons, it grants your desires, but at the cost of stealing your soul (Opportunist)
My main design inspiration was demons and occult beings like Baphomet, etc, but I also incorporated vampire vibes, trying to lean a little more towards Nosferatu-type vampires where I could.

This design is close to final, but I'm gonna experiment with red eyes and see how i like it. For now, I like the cold and soulless eyes it has currently, but I might like evil red eyes better. We'll see.
I'll try to put some supporting material together, and I'll definitely be doing a progression animation, because this design has changed MASSIVELY from start to finish.

just a very normal scarecrow, nothin to see here

So smth I like abt the Dark type is that yea, while it is generally the Asshole type, mechanically Dark types are all abt trickery and fightin dirty. That's smth I wanna work with my design, a bunch of individually weak crows dressing up as smth far scarier (to them at least) and gangin up on their opponents. Seeing as Beak Blast is a non-contact physical move with inconsistent depictions, I decided to go with the concept of birds that become projectiles. Also evoking the imagery of colonial bird nests and burlap things stuffed with creepy crawlies like Oogie Boogie. Thanks to Ender, Grav, Pip, Sun and Yaheg for feedback and support so far.

Also wanna take the opportunity (har har) to show off some supporting doodles and developmental sketches. My og concept was a puppet scarecrow controlled by a crow shadow but that felt way too Ghost so ya. Later I tried workin with a gun leg which is funny but awkward so also ya.

A dreamcatcher, or rather, a nightmare catcher. It caught so many nightmares that it became a dark type...
I had this simple idea for my submission, but I wasn't sure if it'd be enough, especially given Beak Blast. I did try to give it more bird-like traits, and I was even settling on an owl-like design below that I was fond of:
CAP37_FinalSketchy_1280v1.png

This last version was made after I scrapped the puffin missile design idea, and I was almost gonna go with this until a couple of people on Discord told me how much they liked the dreamcatcher compared to the owl, which surprised me. Had a back and forth about it because I worried about Beak Blast, and decided to just wing it anyway since people liked it so much. So I scrapped the owl and went back to the dreamcatcher, toned down the bird elements and went the Sigilyph route. If Sigilyph can be part flying, then so can a dreamcatcher :blobuwu:

There's some remnants of the owl in there with how the spikes are positioned if you squint at least. I will miss that top knot though...
The eye pattern was actually based off of a dreamcatcher with the same pattern, but I can't seem to find it now. Much as I wanted to make it complex, most patterns are flower-like, which didn't feel fitting for a dark type.
I think the other hardest part was deciding how to do the (tail) feathers and wings. Solved that issue with the wings by referencing Sigilyph, but wasn't sure on the feathers because a lot of the time they looked too blocky or cloth-like. After awhile I did figure out that making them rounder and more drop-shaped fixed this issue (along with shortening 2 of them), and even accidentally added the middle black line to make them even more like feathers. Colors are simple, I just borrowed them from Murkrow lol

A doodle of how it uses Beak Blast; the spikes, pattern, and even eye heat up and glow brightly before it unleashes the blast.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT

The Stat Spread Poll is up, which means Stats will be decided in a couple of days, most likely. Normally, the Art Submission deadline is 48 hours after Stats are decided. The mods have discussed it and we will likely be extending the Art deadline a bit, to give artists plenty of time to complete their submissions. Right now, it is tentatively looking like the Art Submission Deadline will be sometime Tuesday, April 21st, US time.

We have not set the exact deadline yet, but just wanted to give all artists a heads up about how things look right now. We will give an official 48 hour announcement when the actual deadline is set.

We also plan to review the thread sometime on Monday for potential disqualifications and try to notify artists to give them time to fix their submissions. If artists wait till the last minute to make final submissions, you are on your own. If you want more timely feedback on the legality of your submission ahead of time, feel free to join the discussion on the CAP Discord and there are many experienced and knowledgeable CAP artists there that will help you. Be aware that the pre-check by CAP moderators is simply a courtesy to help artists, because we don't ever like to see art submissions DQ'ed. But ultimately it is the sole responsibility of the artists to ensure their final submissions are legal according to the rules posted in the OP of this thread.

More of my funky solar eclipse bird! Has gotten a pretty major design overhaul, and supporting material for how it uses Beak Blast! + it without its wings folded.

A foul fowl, fuming at the fact that it failed to fully fledge into a ferocious fire-breathing dragon. One might even call it an Angry Bird...

For this design I wanted to make it VERY clear why this creature would learn the move Beak Blast. It IS the basis for the whole thing, after all, and learnsets should have to make at least some amount of sense. The body and colors overall are meant to evoke a bomb with a lit fuse, just to sell the idea a little more. Think explosive T. rex.

The supporting material includes a transparent version, as well as a PROFESSIONAL, HIGH QUALITY visualization of how it uses Beak Blast.
