Background: Back in the days of Gen. IV, there were some CAP Pokemon that were finalized without a full set of Pokedex entries:
  • Arghonaut
  • Kitsunoh
  • Cyclohm
  • Colossoil
  • Krilowatt
  • Voodoom (only has one)
During CAP updates, we ran the process for giving Arghonaut a set of Gen. IV Pokedex entries here. We still have to give the remaining Gen. IV CAP Pokemon Pokedex entries, which will lay the foundation for giving their pre-evolutions Pokedex entries!

In this thread, we will be giving CAP 9, Colossoil, a set of Gen. IV Pokedex entries. Here is Colossoil's Final Product thread, for reference.

These Pokedex entries must be written in the format of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. This means that the word and character limits must match those from those games, and Pokemon names must be in all capital letters. Otherwise, we will be using modern Pokedex Submission rules.

You will have one week (168 hours) to make your final submissions!

-----

Legal Pokedex submissions must meet the following standards:
  • Species Names cannot be over 11 characters.
  • Pokedex Entries must have flawless grammar. Smogon has a Grammar & Prose team that will help identify mistakes.
  • Pokedex Entries cannot be longer than 23 words and cannot be over 109 characters.
  • Pokedex Entries can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 0-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Double quote (")
    • Period (.)
    • Exclamation point (!)
    • Comma (,)
    • Colon (:)
    • Semi-colon (;)
    • Space
Work In Progress (WIP) Pokedex Entries can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Pokedex Entries can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with multiple Pokedex Entries. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP Pokedex Entries by posting them repeatedly, or making minor wording changes. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all Pokedex Entries by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person.

Pokedex entries Final Submissions must posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • "<Pokémon Name>, the <Species Name> Pokémon", with the Pokemon name and the Species Name in bold
  • A blank line
  • The Diamond Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Diamond" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Pearl Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Pearl" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Platinum Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Platinum" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:

Final Submission

Kricketune
, the Cricket Pokémon

Diamond: It crosses its knifelike arms in front of its chest when it cries. It can compose melodies ad lib.

Pearl: It signals its emotions with its melodies. Scientists are studying these melodic patterns.

Platinum: There is a village that hosts a contest based on the amazingly variable cries of this Pokémon.

Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

WIP

Colossoil,
the Sand Whale Pokémon

Diamond: Its eyes are covered with a thin, clear sheet. Stray sand particles bounce off of this sheet like rubber.

Pearl: Male COLOSSOIL engage in vicious battles over territory, which leave them heavily scarred.

Platinum: Despite the fact that it lives on land, it has many genetic similarities with WAILORD.

Colossoil,
the Drill Whale Pokémon

Diamond: COLOSSOIL is highly territorial and attacks any living creature in their territory.

Pearl: Despite their large size, COLOSSOIL likes to sneak up on their enemy and attack them from underneath.

Platinum: Many underground desert tunnels were made by COLOSSOIL which on average are 2 miles long in every direction.

WIP

Colossoil
, the Land Whale Pokémon

Diamond: A COLOSSOIL will challenge anything that enters its territory. Attacks bounce off its tough, blubbery body.

Pearl: It has moved to harder earth after evolution. The large drill on its nose lets it dig with surprising speed.

Platinum: COLOSSOIL have been observed returning to the sands where they were born to raise their young.

EDIT: Forgot the scars are male-specific. Changed Diamond entry to reference Rebound instead. Open to feedback about whether Colossoil's body can actually be described as "blubbery".

Colossoil,
the EarthBoring Pokémon

Diamond: Sports players model their movements around COLOSSOIL’s evasive yet aggressive battling style.

Pearl: COLOSSOIL’s tough looks and demeanor command attention from even the most powerful Pokémon.

Platinum: COLOSSOIL’s hide is so tough that weaker attacks will bounce right off of it, often back to the aggressor.

Colossoil
, the Tectonic Pokémon

Diamond: Colonies of DIGLETT and DUGTRIO often take refuge in tunnels left behind by traveling COLOSSOIL.

Pearl: COLOSSOIL fights dirty; it collapses the ground below its enemies to make them more prone to its tactics.

Platinum: It took architects years to perfect a building design that can withstand earthquakes caused by COLOSSOIL.

Colossoil
, the Drill Whale Pokémon

Diamond: It stalks its prey by sensing vibrations from their footsteps, then bursts out of the ground to ambush them.

Pearl: Male COLOSSOIL defend their pod from threats, and are often heavily wounded in the process.

Platinum: The drill it uses to dig through the ground is harder than diamonds and can pierce any type of armor.

I couldn't think of a good way to incorporate the "Stop the Secondary" concept.

Colossoil,
the Land Whale Pokémon.

Diamond: COLOSSOIL are often used by miners to dig deep into the ground for rare Heart Scales and Spheres.

Pearl: COLOSSOIL create complex tunnel networks under the ground. Half of the tunnels in mountains are dug by them.

Platinum: If a COLOSSOIL starts tunneling under a building, the foundation becomes weakened and it collapses.

Explanation: Remember spheres from The Underground in gen 4? Those useless things that really didn't matter, but we all tried to get the biggest ones anyways? The Diamond entry tries to play off of that.

WIP

Colossoil
, the Groundbreak Pokémon

Diamond: Attempts to domesticate this Pokémon for farms ended in failure after it was found to enjoy digging up crops.

Pearl: While caked in mud for protection, it drills into prey from underground and swallows them whole.

Platinum: Its body adapted to extreme pressure, forming a streamlined shape that lets it swim through earth like water.

WIP

Colossoil,
the Drill Whale Pokémon.

Diamond: Known as the "scourge of the sands", it bores its prey with its drill before finishing it off with its claws.

Pearl: Its skin is so thick that projectiles bounce right off. It can swim through sand at speeds up to 65 mph.

Platinum: It has a brutal demeanor. Territorial disputes between COLOSSOIL are known to cause earthquakes and cave-ins.

Final Submission

Colossoil
, the Cachalot Pokémon

Diamond: COLOSSOIL were once dismissed as mirages. Their formal discovery caused a huge stir; even charges of fraud!

Pearl: In an ancient land, conical rocks were used as money. Archaeologists identified them as COLOSSOIL drill tips.

Platinum: COLOSSOIL pods harass desert caravans for sport. Some make tributes or decoys to distract the pod and escape.

Okay, so let's go over these real quick. First and foremost... what the heck is a cachalot? It's a sperm whale, which Colossoil most resembles insofar as it resembles a whale at all.

The Diamond entry is sort of a shout-out to the humble platypus, which was considered to be too ridiculous to be real for some time. I like the idea that some Pokemon were considered too ridiculous and small-minded "champions of science" dismissed them. Shows how the world we see in the games had a long road leading up to it.

The Pearl entry was completely redone from the initial WIP. I had tried to transition from the old one, but it ended up being a new thing entirely. I like that it focuses on how these Pokemon and their cast-offs interact with and shape the human world, even indirectly.

The Platinum entry is just me emphasizing Colossoil's Dark sub-typing. People can try to be charitable and diplomatic about it, but at the end of the day, this thing is a bastard and has the typing to back that up. I also loved the notion of desert caravans preparing tributes to/decoys for these massive sand whales to get across the desert safely.

WIP

Colossoil
, the Land Whale Pokémon

Diamond: COLOSSOIL likes to chase prey from under the ground, tiring them out before emerging to swallow them whole.

Pearl: The scars found on male COLOSSOIL are revered by its kind, as they are often gained through brutal battles.

Platinum: Due to its drill being able to carve through metal, COLOSSOIL is often used to demolish large buildings.

WIP

Colossoil
, the Drill Whale Pokémon

Diamond: Its drills are also powerful sensory organs. It can detect its prey from a mile below the surface.

Pearl: COLOSSOIL is notorious for its brutality. What isn't torn apart by its drills is crushed to bits in its jaws.

Platinum: Males engage in intense battles with each other for territory. The more scars COLOSSOIL has, the older it is.

Colossoil,
the Drill Whale Pokémon

Diamond: COLOSSOIL are known for being tough fighters, that's how it got all of its scars!

Pearl: A COLOSSOIL that is drilling underground can move at an average of 30 mph.

Platinum: The drills on COLOSSOIL are actually its bones that grew out of its body so it can dig faster than most pokémon.

Colossoil,
the Drill Pokémon

Diamond: It spends its whole life underground. It only surfaces once every ten years for more air.

Pearl: Don't think that COLOSSOIL's fearsome looks are only for show. It will destroy anything in its way.

Platinum: COLOSSOIL cause massive earthquakes when they battle underground. Not even ONIX are safe!
