Carbink/ Tyranitar is the best :)

What's up all? I'm Thundershock1234 and I'm new on the scene for VCG. Hope you enjoy reading my team! Carbink's one of my all time favourite pokemon and all great teams revolve around your fave.
Team building process:
703.png
- I decided to start with Carbink
703.png
images
- Tyranitar has Sand Stream, which boosts the defense of Rock type pokemon like Carbink, which is essential for my Carbink to survive turn 1 and set up Trick Room
703.png
images
663.png
- If I was going for the Trick Room idea then I would need a fast, priority abuser for when Trick Room wasn't set up so I went for Talonflame.
703.png
images
663.png
625.png
- Bisharp is a good Trick Room abuser and is also an amazing pokemon for doubles so I decided to use him.

625.png
579.png
- I thought I would need another Trick Room user just in case Carbink fainted so here is Reuniclus (possibly the worlds best Trick Room user). Carbink/ Reuniclus lead is interesting because the opponent doesn't know which pokemon will set up Trick Room.

- I needed another wall for my team so Amoonguss was my choice. It has access to rage powder and can tank hits while Reuniclus or Carbink set up trick room.
More Detailed Coverage:

carbink.png

Carbink Leftovers
Sturdy - Calm nature - 252 HP/ 252 sp. def / 4 def
- Trick Room
- Rock Slide
- Protect
- Safeguard
Carbink, In my opinion, is one of the best Trick Room users around. Why? Because it has access to Sturdy, so it can survive a hit and set up. Once all that fun stuff is done it can go on to Rock Slide the opponent and hopefully get some flinches (as it will outspeed everyone). Safeguard is for predicting status moves and Protect is pretty much mandatory for doubles.

248.png

Tyranitar @ Sitrus Berry
Sand Stream - Calm nature - 252 HP/ 252 def / 4 atk
- Protect
- Substitute
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
Tyranitar is a pretty defensive pokemon, as well as boasting a high attack stat. The only bad thing about it is it's low speed. However, Trick Room can put an end to that problem. It has Sand Stream, which boosts the defense of itself as well as Carbink. Also, In Trick Room, it can set up Substitutes before anything can attack it or set up status on it.
talonflame.gif

Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Gale Wings - Adamant nature - 252 atk / 252 spd / 4 HP
- Protect
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Roost
Speed EV's in Trick Room? Don't worry folks, there is a reasonable explanation for this. The speed EV's are for when Trick Room isn't set up so it can outspeed all other Priority users. When outside of Trick Room, Talonflame can Brave Bird and 2HKO Meowstick, who is commonly seen in VGC (252+ Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Meowstic: 237-279 (67.3 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). Talonflame under trick room is still pretty powerful also. It can't outspeed Meowstick however, it can outspeed all other pokemon when using Brave Bird or Roost.

625.png

Bisharp @ Black Glasses
Defiant - Brave - 252 HP / 252 atk / 4 def
- Protect
- Sucker Punch
- Night Slash
- Iron Head
Bisharp is seen a lot in VGC these days. It has good speed for a steel type and a huge attack. However, under Trick Room, Bisharp become oneof the fastest powerhouses in game. It also has Defiant for those charm Meowstick and Defoggers. This set is pretty much Bisharp's bread and butter VGC set. Sucker Punch for priority, Night Slash and Iron Head for coverage and Protect for, well protecting.

reuniclus.gif

Reuniclus @ Life Orb
Magic Guard - Quiet - 172 HP/ 28 def/ 252 sp. atk / 56 sp. def
- Trick Room
- Focus Blast
- Psychic
- Protect
Reuniclus is my other Trick Room user. It has good defenses and high sp. attack however, a low speed that can be fixed by Trick Room. Once Trick Room is set up it can go on to sweep with it gigantic sp. attack, however, it must be cautious for Mega Mawile and Bisharp, who will attempt to lure in Reuniclus with sucker punch.

591.png

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Regenerator - Calm - 252 HP/ 252 sp. def / 4 def
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Rage Powder
- Spore
This is my only pokemon without Protect however, it has fantastic recovery abilities that means it doesn't mind taking a few hits. Giga Drain is it's first form of recovery. Next Black Sludge and then Regenerator. It has Spore to put the opponent to sleep and Rage Powder for my Carbink or Reuniclus to set up Trick Room. Finally it has Sludge Bomb for those pesky fairy types.

So how is my team? I'm new to VGC and am really keen to start playing so please reply soon!

Your team is strange. Are you trying to use a semi-trick room or a full trick room? If you are using a full trick room I recommend to you change tour talonflame for another pokemon more slow. If you are using a full trick room, I recommend to you use another pokemon more fast. Semi-trick rooms works very well in my opinion.

Hey, thundershock1234! Glad to see people are starting to get into VGC and the Doubles metagame in general! Please don't be offended when I give you advice, just trying to help out a new VGC player. :] This rate is going to be quite lengthy, so I will split it into two parts; I will post the second half tomorrow, but I hope you will take account the advice I'll give you right now.

The very first thing I notice about your team is that you don't even carry a Mega-Pokémon, which could be an extremely huge disadvantage to you as every single competitive Pokémon team I've seen has utilitzed the power of a Mega-Evolution. Seeing that Tyranitar is a member of your team, I highly recommend giving him a Tyranitarite > Sitrus Berry so that he can be a very bulky and powerful Mega-Tyranitar, boasting an impressive 100 / 150 / 120 defensive bulk with a sky-high base 164 Attack stat. Mega-Tyranitar can also be easily implemented into a Trick Room team, thanks to his fairly low base 71 Speed stat.

Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 192 Atk / 180 HP / 4 SDef / 132 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Crunch
- Rock Slide
- Brick Break
- Protect
The EVs invested in HP and Defense allow Mega-Tyranitar to never be 2HKOed from an Earthquake from Jolly Garchomp, while also allowing him to survive an Iron Head from Adamant Mega-Mawile 93.7% of the time. Heck, if you ever come across a guy using Ray Rizzo's (Three-time VGC World Champion) Mega-Mawile with an EV spread of 252 HP / 52 Atk / 4 Def / 180 SDef / 20 Spd with a Careful nature, you can still survive a Play Rough from her 89% of the time. STAB Crunch deals significant damage to anyone who doesn't resist it, especially Ghost-types (Mega-Gengar and Max HP Chandelure OHKOed 100% of the time) and Psychic-types (Max HP Reuniclus OHKOed 68.8% of the time). Rock Slide is a great spread move that provides great coverage against Ice, Flying, and Fire-types, OHKOing Talonflame and Mega-Charizard-Y 100% of the time and OHKOing Max HP Mega-Abomasnow 50% of the time. Brick Break is for opposing Tyranitars and can even deal with Bisharp by itself, surviving an Iron Head from LO Bisharp all the time. Protect is obvious for scouting and disrupting double targeting. I really love the Tyranitar + Amoonguss combo because Amoonguss can redirect incoming Fighting, Fairy, or Steel-type moves and resist it, allowing Tyranitar to take care of that certain threat while Amoonguss is taking the hits.

I'll be honest; Carbink isn't the most viable Pokémon to use in VGC 2014, given that it has an unfortunate 4X weakness to Steel-types. But since it is your favorite Pokémon, I'll try my best to maximize its potential in the VGC metagame. Carbink is pretty much Taunt bait, as it is an obvious Trick Room setter and/or support Pokémon for your team. Therefore, I recommend a Mental Herb > Leftovers so that you will be cured in the situation you get Taunted, almost guaranteeing a Trick Room setup when paired with its Sturdy ability. I'd also like to point out that Carbink doesn't really need all the defensive EV investment due to the fact it already has an outstanding 50 / 150 /150 bulk; you should just invest max HP into it. I suggest making Carbink more offensive, as this metagame is pretty fast-paced and offense usually prevails over defense in VGC. With that said, Carbink should have an EV spread of 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 Def with a Quiet (+SAtk, -Spd) nature; the given EV spread maximizes his offensive potential and bolsters his overall bulk, while the Quiet nature maximizes its speed advantage in Trick Room. STAB Dazzling Gleam should be used over Safeguard, providing you coverage against Dark, Fighting, and Dragon-types. Max SAtk Carbink OHKOs 4 HP Hydreigon (100% of the time) and Max HP Scrafty with 4 SDef EVs (25% of the time); two fairly common Pokémon in VGC 2014. Power Gem > Rock Slide for coverage against Ice, Flying, and Fire-types, notably Talonflame and Mega-Charizard-Y. Although Tyranitar provides you with solid Rock-type coverage, it would be useful to have an extra Pokémon with the same kind of coverage in the situation Tyranitar is taken out. Besides, Max SAtk Carbink OHKOs Talonflame and Mega-Charizard-Y 100% of the time, two notable threats in the VGC metagame. Make sure you have 0 Speed IVs for all the members of your team (besides Talonflame) to maximize the speed potential of your Pokémon in Trick Room.

Phew, that was really lengthy. But I'm not finished yet, I'll post the second half tomorrow. Hope I helped! :D

Thanks so much! I was actually using M Tyranitar before you posted and forgot to change and I agree with that. Just wondering though if you meant Brick break > Low kick since Tyranitar cannot learn Low Kick. I also agree with the offensive Carbink. I really love the damage that it does to teams. Thanks so much and I'm sorry my team has so many flaws since I've never played VGC before. I'm more an OU person but I want to give VGC a try XD

All right, sorry for the delay, but here's the second part of the rate!

Let's continue with Talonflame; I would usually prefer a Life Orb on him, but your team already possesses an LO Reuniclus. Although the Sharp Beak provides Talonflame with a 1.2x attack boost for STAB Brave Bird, I prefer Expert Belt > Sharp Beak due to the fact both STABs have the potential of getting an extra 1.2x attack boost when the moves are super-effective against the target. It should be fairly easy to gain the Expert Belt boost, as STAB Brave Bird has coverage against Grass, Fighting, and Bug-types, while STAB Flare Blitz has coverage against Steel and Ice-types. Also, Roost isn't a viable option on Talonflame due to the fact he is pretty frail with a measly 78 / 71 / 69 bulk; I suggest you use Quick Guard > Roost to shield yourself from incoming priority moves, notably against Mach Punch, and even Fake Out. Quick Guard can assist Carbink or Reuniclus in setting up Trick Room for protection against an incoming Fake Out from Mega-Kangaskhan or Scrafty, while protecting Bisharp from a threatening Mach Punch.

As for Reuniclus, I would run Shadow Ball > Protect for coverage against Ghost-types and opposing Psychic-types, specifically Chandelure, and Meowstic-M. Here are some calcs against those two common VGC Pokémon:

252+ SpA Life Orb Reuniclus Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Chandelure: 138-164 (82.6 - 98.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Reuniclus Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Chandelure: 140-166 (102.9 - 122%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Reuniclus Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Meowstic: 104-125 (57.4 - 69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Amoonguss won't really inflict a significant amount of damage against Fairy-types with Sludge Bomb, seeing that he's not meant to be offensively oriented but rather a support utility on this team. Protect > Sludge Bomb so that you have the ability to scout your opponent, while shielding yourself from potentially devastating attacks that can take out Amoonguss easily. I also recommend that Amoonguss carry an EV spread of 236 HP / 108 Def / 164 SDef with a Sassy (+SDef, -Spd) nature to survive an Overheat from Rotom-Heat and to increase his all around defensive bulk for continued Rage Powder support as long as possible. The Sassy nature bolsters Amoonguss's Special Defense while lowering his Speed for maximum speed advantage in Trick Room. This EV spread allows Amoonguss to take numerous hits, and a Sitrus Berry should be used over Black Sludge so that he can recover a good amount of HP (25%) while redirecting multiple attacks with Rage Powder, thus increasing his overall survivability for prolonged support.

Finally finished rating this team. :] Good luck! Hope you'll have success with this team going forward. :D

Thanks so much for the rate! I'm so sorry there was so much wrong with this team and that it took a long time for you to do and I really appreciate it. I pretty much agree with all the above and it's really boosted my ratings on showdown. Anyways Thanks again! XD

Anytime! :] And your team wasn't that bad, it was mainly the movesets that needed to be improved. Hope you do well with this team!

Just realized that Carbink gets a guaranteed 2HKO not 1HKO against Hydreigon with Dazzling Gleam since it does less in doubles because it targets two opponents

Hi just to quickly say if you need the 1HKO against Hydreigon and Scrafty you can use Moonblast over Dazzling Gleam. Using Moonblast on Carbink is a solid 2HKO (60.8 - 72%) to Garchomp as opposed to a 3HKO (38.5 - 45.8%) with Dazzling Gleam. Similarly, it is a guaranteed 2HKO on 252 HP Malamar (63.8 - 75.5%) as opposed to a 3HKO (40.4 - 47.8%) with Dazzling Gleam.
