Moves

Calm Mind allows Magearna to break past Tangrowth, Toxapex, and, in conjunction with Pain Split, Chansey, all of which it would otherwise struggle against. Pain Split allows Magearna to get some health back when it's low on HP and damage whatever is in front of it. Fleur Cannon with Fairium Z allows Magearna to annihilate bulky threats like Tangrowth, Chansey, and Ferrothorn when boosted enough. Thunderbolt is the best coverage move Magearna can use, as it hits Toxapex and Celesteela super effectively as well as Heatran for neutral damage.

Set Details
========

248 HP EVs and 8 Special Defense EVs allow Magearna to survive two Focus Blasts from Mega Alakazam after Stealth Rock. While not always optimal, Magearna can use 96 Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature to allow it to OHKO specially defensive Tapu Bulu with +1 Twinkle Tackle. With this spread, the rest of the EVs go into Defense to allow Magearna to more easily take Ground-type moves from Pokemon like Landorus-T and Zygarde, as well as attacks from Mega Medicham and +2 Hawlucha. Alternatively, Special Defense EVs can be used to sponge attacks from Mega Alakazam, Tornadus-T, and Tapu Lele more easily. Shuca Berry is an alternative option that allows Magearna to effectively lure and remove Ground-types such as Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Choice Band Zygarde at the cost of some of its offensive potential. Leftovers is another option to improve Magearna's longevity and allow it to more reliably check Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Mega Alakazam.

Usage Tips
========

This Magearna set works really well against defensive teams, as it can break through typical checks such as Chansey, Toxapex, and Gastrodon when boosted and can easily get multiple opportunities in a game to wallbreak thanks to Magearna's typing and the longevity Pain Split gives it. Magearna will usually find it impossible to sweep early- or mid-game against offensive teams, so in this matchup, it's usually best to use Magearna's fantastic defensive typing to sponge hits from threats like Mega Alakazam, Tapu Bulu, and Tornadus-T. Also, Twinkle Tackle hits incredibly hard even unboosted, which can allow Magearna to heavily damage or KO common switch-ins like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Excadrill. Be careful of using Calm Mind when the opponent has a threat that can outspeed and heavily damage or OHKO Magearna. These threats include Landorus-T, Garchomp, Volcarona, and Heatran, among others. Volcarona can even use Magearna as setup fodder. Pain Split is best used to keep Magearna healthy, and with consistent use you can usually keep it at fairly high HP throughout a game. Magearna can damage typical switch-ins like Chansey and Heatran and recover health against them if played smartly. When low on health, Magearna can usually find a way to gain some health back to put it in range of surviving an attack.

Team Options
========

Pokemon like Zygarde, Gliscor, and Rotom-W can check Heatran well while also pressuring Landorus-T, which are two of Magearna's most common checks. Threats like Mega Tyranitar and Mega Mawile that can heavily pressure Ground-types are appreciated, since Magearna can't really sweep with one of them still active. Entry hazard setters like Ash-Greninja, Landorus-T, and Mega Diancie can really help with wearing down Heatran, which Magearna can struggle to break through. Mega Diancie is a particularly good partner, since it can wear down opposing Steel-types. Entry hazards can also help put Toxapex, opposing Magearna, and Ferrothorn into range of boosted Thunderbolt and Twinkle Tackle. Magearna hates Spikes and Stealth Rock, since they put it in range of moves like Landorus-T and Garchomp's Earthquake and Modest Heatran's Magma Storm. Defoggers like Gliscor and Rotom-W can check certain Landorus-T sets as well as Heatran, while Defog Tornadus-T helps wear down Heatran. Even though Magearna can take attacks from Zygarde and Landorus-T, it's generally not advised to do so. Thus, Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth can at least switch into them and sponge hits. Tapu Bulu also summons Grassy Terrain, which weakens Earthquake and also gives Magearna another source of recovery. They also take some of the pressure off Magearna by being able to switch into Ash-Greninja and, in Tapu Bulu's case, Mega Alakazam, as this variant of Magearna struggles to switch into these threats consistently.

  • I’d like to see a bullet on Calm Mind. Might be rather intuitive to us, but I’m not sure if i experienced players will grasp on the role it fulfills. By the way, make Calm Mind the first move and call the set Calm Mind + Pain Split.
  • Pain Split allows Magearna to get some health back when it's low on HP and simultaneously damage whatever is in front of it. Mention an example or two. Especially Chansey.
  • Fleur Cannon with Fairium Z allows Magearna to annihilate bulky threats like Tangrowth, Chansey, and Ferrothorn when boosted enough.
  • Again, isn’t quite clear to newer players why Thunderbolt is the preffered coverage option. Please give it a bullet too!

Set Details

  • 248 HP EVs and 8 Special Defense EVs allow Magearna to survive two Focus Blasts from Mega Alakazam after Stealth Rock.
  • 96 Special Attack EVs hit a jump point and allow Magearna to OHKO specially defensive Tapu Bulu at +1 with Twinkle Tackle. With this spread, the rest of the EVs go into Defense to allow Magearna to more easily take Ground-types moves from Pokemon like Landorus-T and Zygarde. Make it a bit more clear this is an alternative spread. Also mention how this lets Magearna stomach a hit from Mega Medicham and +2 Hawlucha if need be.
  • Shuca Berry can be used to survive Ground-type moves from Pokemon such as Landorus-T, Excadrill, and Choice Band Zygarde, which can be really nice to pick up a KO but also means Magearna must sacrifice a lot of its nuking power.
  • Leftovers is another option to improve Magearna's longevity, and it also allows Magearna to more reliably check Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Mega Alakazam.

  • Pain Split is best used when Magearna is on sub-40% health and there is an opportunity to recover health against a high-health foe on the opponent's team. Magearna can damage and recover health against typical switch-ins like Chansey and Heatran if played smartly, and, in general, when low on health, can usually find a way to gain some health back to put it in range of surviving an attack.

  • Entry hazard setters like Ash-Greninja, Landorus-T, and Mega Diancie can really help with wearing down Heatran, which Magearna can struggle to break through. Mega Diancie is a particularly good partner since it can wear down opposing Steel-types. Entry hazards can also help put Toxapex, opposing Magearna, and Ferrothorn into range of boosted Thunderbolt and Twinkle Tackle respectively.
  • Despite having Pain Split, Magearna hates Spikes and Stealth Rock since they put it in range of moves like Landorus-T and Garchomp's Earthquake and Modest Heatran's Magma Storm. Gliscor and Rotom-W can check certain Landorus-T sets as well as Heatran, while Tornadus-T helps wear down Heatran. Tornadus-T also provides Defog support.
  • Even though Magearna can take attacks from Zygarde and Landorus-T it's generally not advised to do so. Thus, Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth can at least switch into them and sponge hits. Mention how they also provide a switch-in to Ash-Greninja and possibly even Mega Alakazam on Tapu Bulu’s case, as without an Assault Vest, Magearna loses a lot of its defensive value.

Specify that it needs CM in conjunction with Split to break past Chansey since it can't really break past it with CM alone.
Shuca Berry can be used to survive Ground-type moves from Pokemon such as Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Choice Band Zygarde, which can be really nice to pick up a KO but also means Magearna must sacrifice a lot of its nuking power.
take out "which can be really nice to pick up a KO" since that's already implied and edit the rest of the sentence to not say nuking since GP hates that. Something like this:
  • Shuca Berry can be used to allow Magearna to lure Ground-types such as Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Choice Band Zygarde at the cost of its offensive potential.
Pain Split is best used when Magearna is on sub-40% health and there is an opportunity to recover health against a high-health foe on the opponent's team.
This isn't necessarily true since there's a lot of situational instances where u wanna use it at fairly high health right before taking a hit, just make this more general to say it should be used to keep gear healthy.
Thus, Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth can at least switch into them and sponge hits.
also mention how bulus terrain weakens eq for gear

Great analysis, most of this was kinda nitpicky/more wording stuff rather than actual changes needed, let's get this off to GP
