Substitute works well with Focus Blast as it gives extra protection should you miss with it. It also protects you from pseudo-status such as Taunt.

What. This sentence is really confusing me, how exactly does Substitute protect you from Taunt? Perhaps you meant from status such as Paralysis or Burn?
