What's up gang :sphearical:

We don't currently have a mafia game in the queue (if you wanna host post a thread in Game Proposals!!! You don't need to have finished designing the game or anything, just a concept is fine and we can work on it together :] ) but we do have some potentially interested hosts so I'm sort of hosting this to fill the gap? IK this won't be every mafia player's cup of tea so sorry about that -- my work's semi-seasonal and July and August (and slightly September) are the months where my shifts are long asf so I'm not really in a place to host filler mafia myself during this period.

ANYWAY here was the last music league that Oddish introduced to the site if you want a refresher on how it works, but to steal their content:

- Music league requires Spotify to play. This is not up to me, unfortunately. But to be clear, you should be able to play without a Spotify account as the playlist of music will be generated in the web player. You just need to be willing to listen to it using Spotify!
- I'm giving y'all X days to submit and Y days to vote, though if anyone needs an extension feel free to ask. We will work out what deadlines each group wants as we go
- I'm capping the amount of players at 12, because once we start going over that point, I find it harder to finish playlists lol <--- I expect/hope we might be able to get 2 smaller games going alongside each other, but will depend on signup numbers
- You are capable of seeing the standings of each song (including your own) after you vote. If you intend to discuss any of the songs, try to keep things vague for the people who have not yet voted. For example, instead of saying something like "wow I can't believe twist of fate is in first place" say "I didn't upvote first place" or something.
- Music league will inform you if a specific artist or song has already been submitted. While there's no rules against submitting the same artist multiple times in one round or game I would advise against it. And definitely do NOT submit a song that was already submitted previously in a later round.
- When submitting, you can write up a comment justify your song choice or just tell us anything you think we should know about it. This isn't necessary, but is highly recommended, since people knowing what your thought process was behind a specific song choice can help you gain more upvotes.
- You can also leave comments while voting. Once again, not necessarily, but highly recommended so that people understand how you felt about their song. Also, comments just make the game far more fun, frankly.
- Speaking of, I haven't decided yet, so I'll leave this one up to you guys...should we have downvotes on for this game? I have no preference either way. Downvotes make things more competitive (and more messy lol, though messy can be fun), while no downvotes keep things more on the casual side. Think about which vibe you'd prefer.

--------------

So what makes this a Communist Music League? Well, I haven't made any categories for the music league. That's your job! When you sign up, in a rare departure from the standard Circus of process where you just type "in", you need to fill out this form:

Code:
[B]Category:
Downvotes:[/B] Yes/No
[B]Phase length:[/B] x days submit; y days score/judge

We'll work out how best to do groups after, probably running concurrent games with people with suitable preferences, based on the answers.

The last music league was 48 hours to judge but we had a few extensions and it did feel a bit heavy on workload -- I think probably judging phases should be at least 72, but if you prefer 48 maybe others do too and you can run a higher effort game! Extensions will still be possible regardless of the overall phase length of the game

We've got a Music League section in the discord btw! If you're not sure on what to include as the category you might like to discuss it in the music league section here, or you can just post and if it seems way too narrow or something I'll ping you in there = )

Category: It’s not about money…it’s about sending a message.
Category description: submit a song that has a political or social agenda it is supporting. Grading should consider both how good the song is and how persuasive it is (roughly 50/50). You MUST explain the agenda you believe your submission is in support of to be eligible for points.
Downvotes: hard no. I like these in theory but in practice I don’t want people to be trying to strategically target songs they think were submitted by those in the upper positions of the standings.
Phase length: 2 days submit, 5 days listen + vote. 7 days total per phase.

why's everyone giving more days to submit btw. Submitting is what you can do ahead of time cos the cats will all be known when the music league starts. Judging/voting is what's work intensive :eeveehide:

Category: your mom (songs that make you think of your mom)
Downvotes: Yes
Phase length: 36 hours submit; 72 hours score/judge

i agree with celever,, you don't need a week to come up with a song. in fact, you can come up with a song while the grading is happening. if you put 5 days, you're still going to end up with people waiting until day 5 to ask for an extension. set the sub time low, expect no-subs a couple of times, move on

I would be down to play but I'm lowkey highkey too impatient for week-long rounds and frankly don't think we don't need longer than 2/2 max, even for voting. I mean you could easily make the argument that playing mafia is "work-intensive" too and phases in those never seem to last longer than 3 days max from what I remember/have seen. People seemed to do fine with 2/2 last game and while there were some extensions I don't think there were enough to warrant having longer phases in general. And even if we did do longer phases, shub is right, there will always be people who still just take all the time that they have been given for submitting and voting/might skip a round entirely entirely

I mean I agree with that but if we have to give out extensions every round like it happened last time I'd rather have a longer submission/vote phase

I personally dont think about what to submit in advance though so it takes time to search for one sometimes. Also judging takes like 1 session of sitting down and deciding

+1. I am in on 2/2 and will be low prio/sub for anything over that

category: festival finale

ok with the playerlist / player size we've got, what would make the most sense is one 16 player music league (splitting into 8/8 would be too small really). this does increase the workload of the game as we're gonna have to judge 15 songs; 48 hour judging phases would be rough if we were having trouble meeting that expectation with 11 songs last time.

to balance player preferences on timelines the best, would be 48/72 or 24/72 phases. The 48/48 lobby group is enough of a minority that we can't force 48 hour judging phases on everyone else; the longer than 3 days to judge lobby group is also enough of a minority that we can't force the people who want shorter deadlines on everyone else, so centrism wins I guess??

Of course, if we do 24/72 it's the same total time as the 48/48 crowd wanted, just arguably balanced better because submitting the song really doesn't take time

Like react to this post for 48/72 phases, Love react for 24/72 phases

Having downvotes is a decently clean majority, as only 4 people voted not to have them. I'm a 5th vote, but 5/16 still isn't really enough

If you no longer want to play with either of these phase lengths post out, too, but hopefully that won't happen as these both seem like ~fine compromises
