Contact Lens

This is Doomsday, and this is a thread about contact lens. Yesterday I was given the opportunity to use contacts instead of my usual glasses, and I gladly said yes; it is of my opinion that I look much better without glasses.
Well, I was pretty fucking tense to be honest. It's not everyday that you get someone else stuffing a piece of glass in your eye. because of that, the doctor couldn't put it in and I decided to go back there in two weeks.

Well, my dilemma being, should I use contacts or glasses? After thinking for a bit, this was what I got from both;
Glasses make me look worse than without them(lol this sentence is dumb);
however, I don't have to fucking touch my eye to see better like four times a day.
Contacts make me look good! Although, I don't know if I will be able to put them on and take them off like four times a day.

So, does anyone here use contact lens? Has anyone here ever used them? please psot your experience and suggestions.

Contact lenses rock, period. I've been using them for the past three years now, and apart from in the beginning, I don't have any problems with them.

When you start wearing them you can't keep them in all day, because your eyes aren't used to it and they will get dry and hurt like hell (one of my eyes went all red after leaving them in until night time). Nowadays I keep them in from morning to night, about sixteen hours, with no problem. If you nod off for a while with contact lenses still on it still fucking hurts to take them out though, because somehow they stick to your eye and refuse to come out until your eyes are red with trying. So never fall asleep unless you can help it (but I did sleep all night once and they came out just fine the next morning).

I would strongly suggest using daily disposables over monthly lenses, though. I've heard a lot of funny shit happen with the latter, like people getting infections and even losing their eyesight, but that only happens when you go to strange foreign countries where your body can't cope with the different types of bacteria there. So on holiday, I'd say stick to glasses unless you're using bottled water to clean yourself with (even tap water has things like amoebas in them). I was told to wash my hands and dry them with paper towels before putting on lenses but several times I've been in a rush and didn't even bother with washing, with no problems (always wash with monthly lenses though). And if you do using monthlies ALWAYS wash with the solution provided, and never tap water, because of the amoebas and stuff in the water.

Contact lenses are perfectly fine to use provided you take the proper precautions, despite what some people think.

I've worn contacts almost everyday for the last 15 years.
The whole "putting something in your eye" thing is no big deal after about a week.
There are contacts now that you can just put in & leave in for a month (most people actually keep them in much longer than that though).
So if it's that bad for you it only has to about a twice a year thing.

IMO, glasses are a huge liability. They are always finding a way of sliding down, or pinching, or getting smashed against your face. You consciously or unconsciously have to dick with them about 100 times a day; while contacts are just part of your body once they're in.

This is me and contacts in a nutshell lol. I'd worn glasses since I was 2-3 and then started contacts when I was 15.

I started off with the 'daylies', until I realised how expensive they worked out to be, and how uncomfortable they were, but only relative to other lenses.

I was wearing them from, say 7am until 11pm and my eyes would get sore about 4 in the afternoon (you are only supposed to wear these ones for 10 hours) and my optician was going on about horror stories about people that wear them for too long and blood vessels grow across their eyes etc.

Partly because of this, and party due to the cost, I decided to go for 'monthlies'. I did pay a little bit more though (still much cheaper than daylies) for the 'permeable' ones, that basically let oxygen in, and let you wear them for as long as you wanted with no ill effects.

From the first day of wearing them I loved them, and compared to the previous ones (that I still preferred to glasses) I felt like nothing was in my eye. All that for a little bit of cleaning with solution and dumping in a pot every night is well worth it imo.

tl;dr ¬_¬

My brother is trying some new thing called OK lenses. Basically they're contacts, but you don't wear them during the day, you wear em at night, and it helps you see during the day. Pretty cool IMO, but also extremely expensive.

This is so true. It also sucks when you fall asleep with your glasses on, and you wake up with them all fucked up. It also sucks that when it's raining, you have to keep cleaning them. That's probably what I dislike the most about glasses, I can't believe I forgot to mention that.

So, what kind of contacts are there? Based from what you've said, there are daily ones that you have to change each day and monthly ones that you change like once a month? Some more detail would be appreciated.

I wear daily disposable contacts. They are very nice because you don't need to worry about cleaning or losing them. In addition, you can ask for a very high water content. I fairly regularly go for a week or two without taking a contact out (including nighttime) and my eyes are fine because of the high water content in the contacts.

I recommend.

EDIT: for those of you who swim a lot like me, high water content contacts fall out easier. Sucks. The fact that each daily disposable is worth only like 50c makes it ok though.

It kinda sounds like the doctor tried to give you gas permeable lenses... My eye doctor told me a story and I always thought they were just chunks of crap.

You want soft contact lenses.
I have contacts that last for two weeks, then i "should" switch to a new pair, but I don't. I never sleep in my contacts, my eye doctor told me you shouldn't, even if the contacts say you can, because they just hurt or whatever. And if you get used to taking 'em out and putting 'em in, you get really fast.

Theres contacts that should last for a month, a day, and like two weeks. I like the two weeks ones, then I just wear 'em for a little while longer because I take them out at night.

Just make sure that when you take them out, you put them in the case with new solution every day. There are "no rub" varieties of solution, so you don't really have to wash 'em with the stuff or anything. I only wash them if they hurt when I put them in - usually because theres a small piece of fuzz I didn't get off.

Overall, Contacts are pwn. I hate my new glasses, so I almost always wear contacts and they never really hurt, unless I put them in at like early and leave them in 'til like 4AM, and only then are they slightly uncomfortable.
I've never had them hurt, unless I had fuzz on the contact. (Like a small fuzz thing from a towel when I dry my hands.) But then, you can just rinse 'em and they're good.

i've had contacts for probably...2 months now? I remember the doctor said sometimes your eyeball is too curved or something and then you can't wear them at all, if he couldn't get them in maybe that's your case ;(

and they aren't glass anyway, they are like 90% water and a little piece of plastic, the first time they didn't hurt to go in, it just felt like something was stuck in your eye and you couldn't get it out which was kinda weird but they worked.

i've had shitloads of problems with the disinfecting stuff, that stuff BURNS your eyes man, seriously, it hurts, so I have to disinfect them overnight, THEN rinse them with saline, and then put them in, which is annoying ;d

but otherwise they are great, I only wore glasses for seeing long distances before, but now that I wear contacts all the time I see great anywhere.

yes there are daily ones, which are apparently more annoying, I'm using the monthly ones and i've had no problems except with the apparent bleach they put in the disinfectant.

and as long as you disinfect them you won't have problems, you won't lose your eyesight or anything ._. that likely would only happen if you rinsed them in dirty water over time or something iono

If youre like me and only need to wear them occasionally (like reading or something) theyre not really worth it imo. I couldnt get the hang of them, and werent really worth the discomfort they brought me. However if you wear em all the time, contacts are a great idea if you can get used to them.

No, I was just really tense and I kept closing my eye instintively. I'm a pussy ;-(

No, I have to use glasses all the time.

I am in the exact same boat as doomsday. The difference is I only want to wear the contacts when I go out, so in this case since i would only be going out on friday/weekends, would you reccomend daily ones?

Hm... I think the +Quote button is broken...

Anyway, I'd go with two week lenses or whatever. Daily just seems like a pain having to get out a new pair and everything.
You actually might find you wear them more often. I was only really planning on wearing mine during school, then taking them out after, but I keep them in all day. The only days I don't wear 'em are weekends where I stay home.

I have absolutely no problems with the contacts that I have right now; I switch them out every 2 weeks. This thread actually reminds me I need to throw away my old ones today! (I am wearing my glasses right now because I dont feel like putting my contacts in considering I got up at like 11:30)

I wear contacts, but keep glasses in my car in case I'm too lazy to put the contacts in and I have to drive somewhere when it's dark out.

Get contacts, I think they're much better than glasses for all the mentioned reasons. I've gotten so good at putting them in that I do it with one hand, takes me about 15-20 seconds to put both in.

I wear glasses and have no problem with them. However, I have had the desire to try contact lenses. I got a few dailies in 2005. I still have half the box left. I could not get them in. I kept poking my eye (I could see in the mirror the contact on my damn eye) but it would not stick. It might have been the brand but because of it I now have a grudge with contacts.

I wear glasses now. I had contact lenses for a brief period but had a lot of grief puttin them in every morning and, for me, it just wasn't worth the hassle.

@jackal and anyone else: you can still get monthly ones, you don't have to wear them every day if you don't want to, but you might find yourself doing it anyway just because its nice to see perfect rather than well enough ;d

I found myself laughing at whoever said you need daily disposable ones. If you are responsible enough to wash your hands when dealing with your contacts and clean out the case and do everything you're supposed to do, monthly contacts will not give you a problem at all. There is no difference other than the fact you use one kind longer than the other. I've had contacts for at least 7 years, always been the monthly disposable ones, and I have never had any problems. Hell I usually use them for like 2 months before changing to a new set.

Contacts are great. The adjusting period doesn't last very long and you get really comfortable with touching your eyes really fast. I used to hate touching my eyes and such and I still to this day can not watch a scene in a movie where someone gets their eye gouged or something but contacts are a breeze. You'll have issues getting them in and even more issues removing them when you start off but you'll adjust with a little practice. Trust me it's worth it.. I absolutely hate wearing glasses now because contacts are so much nicer.

I've worn the old school daily dispoables: they're pretty wasteful if you ask me.

There's also a kind that you just pop in, and leave in for like a month.

But right in between these two is a kind of lense that you take out at night, and dispose of after about 2-3 weeks.
These are much cheaper than the monthlys, and if take good care of your lenses you can wear them for up to 6 months with no problems at all; making them cheaper than the dailys.

I only have to go to the eye place like every 3rd or 4th year, because a year's supply is actually a 3 year stockpile.

I agree with this part. I'm wearing mine for almost 4 years now, and I can go out whole nights while wearing them. Wearing them during the night is not good for your eyes in the long run though.

I had the same "i dont want to touch my friggin eye" problem in the beginning aswell. you'll get over it pretty quickly! and its totally worth it! now i put them in in no time (2 mins or so) and taking them out is even quicker. just be strong in the beginning you'll love contacts!!

edit: though, especially in the beginning, it is wise to wear your glasses sometimes when you can. this way you will not make your eyes "tired".

I dont have a problem with touching my eye. The contact lens just wont stick. I mean I poked my eye sixty times and the contact still would not stick to it.

^look directly into a mirror with the other eye or stare directly at something and don't move until it goes in, that usually works

Your fingers have to be semi-dry usually. If they're too wet the adhesion of the moisture on your finger and the contact will keep it on your finger obviously.

Another tactic you can employ is the second you touch the contact to your eye, immediately look off to one side. It'll help it catch and stay there.
