Core Analysis Workshop

Pokemon teams rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. Cores of pokemon are units within teams that are built specifically to take advantage of these synergies between pokemon. Many teams are built around such cores. The premise of this thread is to analyze cores by discussing threats to them and then potential partners. Hopefully this exercise helps you with your teambuilding process.

Procedure:

2 Pokemon cores

1. I will post a core comprised of 2 pokemon.

2. For the first 3 days after that post, posters will have the chance to post threats to the core.

3. After the the first 3 days are up, posters will nominate potential partners to the core, keeping in mind the threats previously posted. This will last for 4 days.

4. When the week is up, I will choose the top 3 partners to the core and put them in the OP. This is a subjective procedure so I will most likely consult other players – but not ones who made nominations in the thread. Please don’t be insulted if your nomination doesn’t make the OP. I will probably add in a Hall of Fame if this thread goes on for long enough.

3 Pokemon cores

1. I will post a core comprised of 3 pokemon.

2. For half the week, posters will have a chance to post threats to that core.

3. After the time period is up, I will choose the top threats to the core and put them into the OP. We will not discuss partners for 3 mon cores.

Rules:

1. Please follow up your reservations in a timely fashion. I will allow 3 hours after a reservation to make the post. After the 3 hours is up, if you have not made your post then someone else may reserve that pokemon.

2. When the threats nominations period ends, I will no longer accept threats and will only be accepting partners to the core.

3. Please post only pokemon that are viable in RU. This means they should be listed on the viability rankings thread.

4. Each poster may only nominate one partner to a core. I would prefer you only post one threat as well but if many threats have been posted since your first post I may allow you to post a second threat.

5. When posting either a threat or a partner, explain yourself. Calcs are not necessary but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. Be descriptive so that other posters and I can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. Also please list a full set of the pokemon including its item, full moveset, EV spread, and nature.

6. When nominating partners, please post one moveset and EV spread. I'd prefer you didn't use slashes much just because this should be treated as a teambuilding exercise. Obviously I will be more lenient regarding slashes on threats.

7. Please be respectful to others :)

Clarifications Regarding Threats & Partners:

A threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. A threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. Of course, the biggest threats counter both members.

When nominating partners, you are allowed to make suggested changes to the current sets of the members of the core.

None for now!

Medicham @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt
- Trick
- Thunder Punch

Scarf Medicham out speeds Durant and Mega Glalie though it can't switch in unless on a predicted ice shard once it is in these just die to this.

Here are some Calcs if you actually need some for this:

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 235-277 (91.4 - 107.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rocks

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Glalie: 620-732 (205.9 - 243.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

eren

je suis d'ailleurs

Delphox is a huge threat to this, specifically the Choice Scarf set. It is able to outspeed and KO both Durant and Glalie with either Flamethrower or Fire Blast : ).

Emboar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Reckless
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Wild Charge
- Toxic/Sleep Talk

I don't know if scarf emboar is still really common but it outspeeds and kills both mons. Also because the durant isn't sashed it causes many of problems for the core as a whole with overlapping fire type weaknesses. It also doesn't fear Glalie's ice shard as it resists it and can take it with ease.
252 Atk Emboar Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 684-808 (266.1 - 314.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Emboar Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Glalie: 452-534 (150.1 - 177.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO '
There isnt really a reason not to spam flare blitz on the core.
(I hope I did this right)

Sneasel @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Ice Shard
- Knock Off
- Low Kick
- Icicle Crash

A pretty big threat to the core in question given that durant cant switch into it cause knock off, even with min rolls, will 2hko durant after stealth rock damage. It resists ice shard and low kick safely OHKO mega glalie. Cant switch into any of them though but it is a pain for both.

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Low Kick (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Glalie: 328-387 (108.9 - 128.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 152-179 (59.1 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Knock Off (65 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 101-121 (39.2 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Jolteon @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Signal Beam / Whatever
- Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Water / Hidden Power Grass
- Volt Switch

Jolteon's great speed tier makes it very annoying for this core, as it out speeds and OHKO's both after stealth rocks. Jolteon can not switch in on either but once it comes in having a switch in to this would be very helpful.
252 SpA Life Orb Jolteon Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Mega Glalie: 230-270 (76.4 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Jolteon Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Durant: 304-359 (118.2 - 139.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Mega Glalie Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Jolteon: 93-111 (34.3 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

First of all, I want to highlight that for partners, I would like to see posters further exemplifying good discussion by stating the purpose of the core, the type of environment/teams it is most effective in, and then post what partners can be useful, in terms of both offensive and defensive synergy.

Now to move on to my own threat post:

Gurdurr @ Eviolite
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 36 Def / 16 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off

With Durant and Mega Glalie being physically orientated, Gurdurr is able to take on the threat the core possesses due to its decent physical bulk coupled with Eviolite. Not only does it serve the purpose of checking the said core, it also allows for late-game sweeping with easy access to recovery in the form of Drain Punch and a set-up move in the form of Bulk Up. Guts further supports such a capability by turning statuses from a liability to a benefit, enabling Gurdurr to net certain crucial damage rolls or kills.

252 Atk Hustle Durant Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 127-151 (33.9 - 40.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
204+ Atk Gurdurr Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 102-120 (39.6 - 46.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 Atk Hustle Durant Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 190-225 (50.8 - 60.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 204+ Atk Gurdurr Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 153-180 (59.5 - 70%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Refrigerate Mega Glalie Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 177-208 (47.3 - 55.6%) -- 75.4% chance to 2HKO
204+ Atk Gurdurr Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Glalie: 270-318 (89.7 - 105.6%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
204+ Atk Gurdurr Mach Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Glalie: 144-170 (47.8 - 56.4%) -- 84.8% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Refrigerate Mega Glalie Double-Edge vs. +1 252 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 118-139 (31.5 - 37.1%) -- 81.3% chance to 3HKO

Taking Rhyperior.

Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Atk / 232 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Rock Blast
- Roar / Megahorn / Protect

Rhyperior is an excellent partner to the posted core as it can switch into the Fire type Pokemon that threaten this core. It can also provide valuable Stealth Rock support for both Pokemon in order for them to do their job much easier.

Linda (Fletchinder)
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 152 HP / 252 Atk / 80 Def / 24 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Acrobatics
- Taunt
- Roost
- Swords Dance

So after looking over the threats to this core I noticed a large portion of them are Fighting- Types or frail mons that can't really take a hit. So after like a few seconds I also notices this core can have some problems with Scrafty or opposing Durants since the core is not very fast also needed some priority so the first mon that came to me that can't check all these mons is non other then Fletchinder the jpg. Bird.

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Emboar: 384-452 (106.3 - 125.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Medicham: 342-404 (131 - 154.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 206-246 (55 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO ( set up on this )

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Scrafty: 240-284 (88.5 - 104.7%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

+2 252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Jolteon: 202-238 (74.5 - 87.8%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 217-256 (86.4 - 101.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 244-288 (94.9 - 112%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Delphox: 351-414 (120.6 - 142.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

So yeah as you can see Fletch makes an amazing partner for this core

Tyrantrum @ Choice Band
Ability: Rock head
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Head smash
- Outrage
- Superpower
- Earthquake

One of the better partners, it can take hits from fire type mons due to its quad resist and is able to retaliate with Head smash, a very spammable move. With this though, I suggest running Durant equipped with a choice scarf, being able to outspeed Sneasel which can be seen in n

Ohkoes everything

I pretty sure linda has a fun time with this core if I am not mistaken gets some nice priority acro but unfortunatly cant get the OHKO on swagilyph a minor inconvenience as Ice Shard+Psyshock kill but none the less this core is shaken up by Linda as it comes in on two of the mons and give it alot of trouble because you have to sack a mon to Knock it out. Its not incredibly dismantling (unless its at +2) but the core has to play around it cautiously.

Calcs:
252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Emboar: 380-450 (105.2 - 124.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 217-256 (86.4 - 101.9%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO Guaranteed after rocks.

252+ Atk Fletchinder Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Sigilyph: 162-192 (56.6 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Rhyperior @ Lum Berry (/Life Orb)
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch / Megahorn
- Rock Polish

Rock Polish Rhyperior Rhyperior sets up on Sigiyph and Emboar locked into everything but superpower safely. From there, it can proceed to KO every member of the core. If you are desperate you can even set up on Sneasel, as two maxrolls from icicle+shard still leave you with a little more than 20%. Setting up on Emboars superpower is also possible, as sneasel will still not be able to revenge with ice shard.
So yeah you can set up on everything if you feel like it and plow through this core afterwards.

vs. Emboar:
252 Atk Rhyperior Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Emboar: 488-576 (135.1 - 159.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Emboar Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 226-267 (60.9 - 71.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

vs. Sneasel
252 Atk Rhyperior Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 277-327 (110.3 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 175-207 (47.1 - 55.7%) -- 20.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 82-99 (22.1 - 26.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

vs. Sigilyph
252 Atk Rhyperior Stone Edge vs. 200 HP / 4 Def Sigilyph: 414-488 (123.5 - 145.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Granbull @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Play Rough
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
- Heal Bell

Granbull's Fairy-typing coupled with Intimidate make it a big threat to this core. Granbull also has Play Rough to take care of Tyrantrum and Medicham.

-1 252 Atk Pure Power Medicham Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 93-109 (24.2 - 28.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
8 Atk Granbull Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Medicham: 288-342 (110.3 - 131%) -- guaranteed OHKO

-1 252 Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 135-159 (35.2 - 41.5%) -- 77.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 202-238 (52.7 - 62.1%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
8 Atk Granbull Play Rough vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tyrantrum: 198-234 (64.7 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Durant @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- X-Scissor
- Superpower
- Baton Pass

It can switch into Medicham pretty well if it doesn't use High Jump Kick and can take Outrages and Earthquakes from Tyrantrum (although it can live a Head Smash if there are no rocks up), while outspeeding and OHKOing both Pokemon (if it doesn't miss :P)

252 Atk Tyrantrum Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 94-111 (36.5 - 43.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Tyrantrum Outrage vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 84-99 (32.6 - 38.5%) -- 99.1% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 211-249 (82.1 - 96.8%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 315-372 (122.5 - 144.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Tyrantrum Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 141-166 (54.8 - 64.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 Atk Tyrantrum Outrage vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 126-149 (49 - 57.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 235-277 (91.4 - 107.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham Zen Headbutt vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Durant: 72-85 (28 - 33%) -- 94.2% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Hustle Durant Iron Head vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tyrantrum: 330-390 (107.8 - 127.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO (it also does the same damage with Superpower if that's relevant)
252+ Atk Hustle Durant Iron Head vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Medicham: 241-285 (91.9 - 108.7%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Tangrowth @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 132 HP / 252 SpA / 124 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb
- Leaf Storm
- Focus Blast

It cant switch directly into any of the members in this core but thanks to its natural physical bulk it can easily take on both of these 2 mons in a 1v1 situation, and switch out to recover most of the damage. Leaf storm destroys both members of this core.

Against tangrowth:

252 Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 132 HP / 0 Def Tangrowth: 193-228 (51.6 - 60.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 132 HP / 0 Def Tangrowth: 214-253 (57.2 - 67.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Just calcing the strongest attack

What tangrowth does back:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tangrowth Leaf Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Medicham: 394-465 (150.9 - 178.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tangrowth Leaf Storm vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tyrantrum: 475-561 (155.2 - 183.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mega Audino.

Audino @ Audinite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Dazzling Gleam

Mega Audino is insanely bulky and has an extremely solid typing, which makes it a threat to this core. Tyrantrum can't do much, and can't even OHKO at +2, while Dazzling Gleam is an easy 2HKO. Meanwhile, Medicham can't break past it either with HJK, which is only a 3HKO, while Dazzling Gleam once again 2HKO's.

252+ Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 157-186 (38.2 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+1 252+ Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 235-277 (57.3 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 313-369 (76.3 - 90%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Tyrantrum Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 70-83 (17 - 20.2%) -- possible 5HKO

0 SpA Mega Audino Dazzling Gleam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tyrantrum: 218-260 (71.2 - 84.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 99-117 (24.1 - 28.5%) -- 96.6% chance to 4HKO

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 159-187 (38.7 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Reserving Escavalier.

Escavalier @ Choice Band
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Megahorn
- Iron Head
- Pursuit
- Knock Off

Escavalier is an excellent partnr for the blue squad for a number of reasons. Medicham can make use of Baton Pass to get Escavalier in unscathed in order to eliminate all fairies with a STAB Iron Head. Escavalier also has no problems breaking down physical walls, most notably Quagsire while also removing their only form of recovery in Leftovers with a powerful Knock Off.
