Corsola Thread

Corsola

This Pokemon has been placed in UU in previous generations, primarily because even though it has an awesome movepool, it doesn't have much in the way of stats. This hasn't changed much in DP, except that its movepool has gotten even better.

Type: Water/Rock

This is supposed to be a tankish Pokemon, but it's got 2x weaks against electric, fighting, and ground, all of which are very common, as well as a 4x weak against grass, which isn't as common. On the plus side, it has a 2x resist against normal, ice, poison, and flying, as well as a 4x resist against fire.

Stats: 55 HP/55 Atk/85 Def/65 SAtk/85 SDef/35 Spd/380 total

Traits:
Hustle (Drop accuracy by 20% to increase damage by 50%)
Natural Cure (Corsola heals all status conditions when it switches out)

Physical Movepool (STAB in bold):
Earthquake
Explosion
Frustration/Return
Icicle Spear (breeding)
Natural Gift
Rock Blast
Secret Power
Spike Cannon
Stone Edge

It doesn't even get waterfall. ;_;

Special Movepool:
Ancientpower
Blizzard
Earth Power
Hidden Power
Ice Beam
Power Gem
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Surf

This is kind of better. It even learns Psychic. IT LEARNS PSYCHIC.

PSYCHIC CORAL GO! :D

Support Movepool:
Amnesia (breeding)
Aqua Ring
Barrier (breeding)
Calm Mind
Hail/Rain Dance/Sandstorm/Sunny Day
Ingrain (breeding)
Light Screen/Reflect
Lucky Chant
Mirror Coat
Recover
Refresh
Rest
Rock Polish
Safeguard
Sleep Talk
Stealth Rock
Substitute
Toxic

This would be totally sweet if Corsola had, say, 10 moveslots.

Movesets:

Stallwhore
Corsola @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP/128 Def/128 SDef
Natural Cure
-Amnesia
-Barrier
-Ingrain
-Toxic

This set is legal, as you get all the breeding moves from Cradily.

Ingrain first, to keep from being phazed, and then amnesia and barrier up while throwing out toxics. If you're worried about status, choose Aqua Ring or Recover instead so you can switch out and trigger Natural Cure. In any case, watch out for hazers and CH-hackers.

CM Hustle Abuser
Corsola @ Leftovers
EVs: 128 HP/128 Def/252 SAtk
Nature: Modest (+SAtk, -Atk)
Hustle
-Calm Mind
-Power Gem/Ancientpower
-Surf
-Recover/Earth Power/Ice Beam/Explosion

This makes you into a CMer. Water/Rock has surprisingly good type coverage, only being resisted by Breloom, Dialga, Empleon, and Poliwrath. Choose the last move based on who you hate the most.

I haven't done the calculations, but it looks like Corsola could actually do some decent damage with a couple of CMs under its belt. Of course, you have to watch out for the 80% accuracy. Also remember you're not just slow but damn slow, and it'll be hard for you to get all the CMs up.

Pseudopasser
Corsola @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP/128 Def/128 SDef
Natural Cure
-Light Screen
-Recover
-Reflect
-Surf

It can pass both reflect and light screen in the same set. Recover is for those hits you inevitably take, and Surf is for if you're stuck with it as your last Pokemon.

Comments: Dear Gods. Why does there seem to be an inverse relationship between movepool depth and stat power? On the one hand, we've got things like Qwilfish and Corsola, which have all sorts of nifty moves but no power, and on the other side, things like Arcanine and Gyarados, which have godlike stats but not enough moves to fill them out. Anyways, the stat total, movepool, and traits seem to place it solidly in the UU category.

Why the hell didn't this thing get a D/P evolution? It looks like it'd be perfect for it.

Corsola in DP will be where Corsola is in RSE. In the All-Star range. The All-Star Useless Pokes, that is. Sad but true. Its stats are just too pathetic.

This is a really well-made discussion thread, nice work.

I'll be honest, I completely forgot Corsola existed until I saw this thread. It's just too forgettable...

You have two main options with this thing in UU, really: abuse Hustle, and pseudopass. It has pretty nice defenses and a normal resist, which allows it to do the latter fairly well on physical attackers. The fact that it doesn't even get fucking waterfall makes the second option a bit harder. I'm pretty sure Hustle only applies to physical attacks by the way, so your Hustle abuser set really doesn't.

For what it's worth you can Natual Rest (Rest with Natural Cure), but it does learn Recover.

This thing has an amazing movepool, but it also has the 4 moveslot syndrome+crap stat syndrome.

I suppose in the fifth gen, they'll give all the 2 stage bugs and crap like Corsola, Pachirisu, Qwilfish, Sableye, Mawile and maybe even Octillery, evolutions.

If GF is smart they'll give Pachirisu an electric/flying type evolution. flying squirrels > all!

Sorry for bumping, but I just thought of a novelty set:

Corsola @Focus Sash / Life Orb
Trait: Hustle
Nature: Modest
EVs: 56 HP / 252 SAtk / 200 Spd
~Rock Polish
~Surf
~Ice Beam
~Earth Power / Hidden Power [Grass]

Novelty sweeping set. Rock Polish, and this thing becomes as fast as Relicanth does with a Rock Polish as well. Could work in UU, but if you want OU then you must use Focus Sash

I was under the impression that Hustle boosted move power by 50%. So, I don't think it matters whether the move is physical or special.

In R/S/E it only applied to physical moves (hence CB Hustle Aerial Ace Delibird). I don't think we have any reason to believe it changed.

I'm not saying that there's no way Hustle could have changed, but if they changed Hustle because of the game mechanics, wouldn't they have also changed Guts and Marvel Scale?
