Countdown to XY: A Nostalgia Thread

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?

You can answer one or both. Activity seems to be dropping, let's try to fix that! :)

Electric Shock Showdown. First time Ash really REALLY gets his ass handed to him. And the first time he actually thinks about how to win the match (with a little help from a certain Brock).

I also loved the "different style" Gyms in Orange Islands and then the Sinnoh League where Ash actually uses his brain and battles exceptionally well. In terms of movies, Probably one of the earlier ones is my favourite, but I haven't watched any for a loooooong time haha.

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
During my first playthrought? Yeah, It was okay. When I'm playing a new generation I do like to only use the new pokémon, but during later playthrought I didn't like it at all and found myself transferring over old pokémon just to have them in my team. I'm glad XY will have old pokémon, and I hope the regional pokedex is huuuge! :D

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
The episode with

"15 - Battle Aboard the St. Anne" and "16. Pokémon Shipwreck" are probably the ones I remember the most. Thought those episode were very exciting when I was a little kid, and I loved Magikarp..

Day 17: It's a tossup between The Spell of the Unown, Destiny Deoxys, and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew for my favorite movies. Favorite episode is a lot harder to pick because I can't remember a lot of them. The episode Charizard starts to listen to Ash (you know, when he got frozen and Ash nursed him to health by the bonfire) is probably my favorite one. I also really like all the episodes when he goes back to Pallet Town and visits his old friends at Oak's lab.

Day 17: The Battle Finale of Legend. I always love it when the bad guy actually achieves their goal for a bit, but then they're shut down by the good guys.

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?
In CM2 (France's equivalent of fifth grade), in a rural town, we heard about Pokémon by the guy who introduced the TCG in the school. It soon replaced marbles in our playground.
The following year, a classmate showed me how to play a ROM of Pokémon Blue. My parents didn't want consoles inside the house. I bought a book guide but I doubt it was official, there were type mistakes in it.
One year of lamentations later, I received a translucent purple GameBoy Color for my birthday. Pokémon Gold came out a few weeks later, I remember vividly visiting my grandparents on that day and the time I spent in my room trying to catch every Pokémon in every road, and the surprise when evening came! Suddenly I backtracked to catch all of the night Pokémon. I cherished that version immensely.

Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
I had to wait until a shiny Glameow in Pearl to find my first non-Gyarados shiny.

Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
In Blue, I caught all but the version exclusives and the Link evolutions since I played on the computer (I hated those evolutionary families, because I thought they were all so cool and I couldn't train them). During Gold I didn't know anyone who had Silver, and later I ceased to care about filling the Pokédex.

Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
Tortank! My starter on my Blue rom. Oh but I had level 110+ Golduck and Golbat due to the glitch off the east coast of Cinnabar Island.

Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
Stantler and Mantine from my Gold days, they were my core with my Meganium. Poor Meganium was so useless against the E4… But I doubt Stantler and Mantine helped much, and now I wonder what powerhouse did I use to get through it?

Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
Once we heard the rumored existence of Marill, I thought it was related to Pikachu.

Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
Simply playing on the console for the first time since HeartGold. I skipped Gen V due to college, not wanting to buy another DS after it broke, and a disinterest in the starters. Actually, liking the starters again and the early Pokémon from what I can guess.
Above all, and the reason why I finally registered here in anticipation: rekindling with competitive gameplay.

Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
See question 10. Also, never using TMs that were unreplaceable.

Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
Johto, for the Mediterranean climate.

Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
More letters! To Pokémon's names, trainer name (so I can actually name it after myself), move and types names even. In French, spelling is awfully bastardized because of the character limitations: "Electrik" instead of "Électrique"? I never used an Electric-type Pokémon in a playthrough because of that. Grammar quirks!

Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
HGSS PokéWalker.

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
The Gold ones would probably trigger the most memories but I can't remember any out of my head.

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
I played Colosseum. I missed the tall grass, there wasn't the same element of surprise. The universe and the battle graphics won me over though, I stopped playing Sapphire for a while.

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
Yes. Well. So much time that could have been better employed! So many neurons deployed to remember all the names… Twice! French and English! Oh, the waste!

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
PokéBall seals? My other Pokémon enjoyed making entrances at least as glamorous as my shiny Purugly.

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
No, I disliked so many elements of the Pokémon design in that generation. The majority I don't even want to catch. There is no value in replaying because I would only want to use the same few I find palatable.

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
The baby Stantler one.

the one with either this, or
.

I know Ash can't ever get too good, but these episodes are just MMPH. I'm leaning towards the former. It's just a better example of straight-up fighting, while the latter has nostalgia going for it.

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
No. Similar to what a lot of other people, Pokémon has been a constant presence in my life since Red and Blue even though my interest has come and gone. Pokémon websites were the first thing I went on when my family got our first computer and from there I discovered forums which have sucked up hours of my life. One of the first forums I registered at sparked my interest in writing for fun which has since become a big thing for me (actually, that account still exists and turned 10 years old in June, although I haven't logged in for a couple of years). I wouldn't trade those memories for anything- and that's not counting memories from playing the games themselves! Whether the wait until I got Blue and my GBC at Christmas or finally, finally catching that damned Entei in Silver, no game will ever come close to beating those memories.

Actually, if I did lose all memory of Pokémon, I'm not sure if I'd even start playing it again. While the designs themselves still appeal, there's so much stuff to learn that I think I'd just find it too overwhelming.

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
Pokémon following you, even though I did go back to using the bike all the time. I loved the little sprites and having the shiny variations was a really nice touch.

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?

Loved it. Even with the more obvious 'replacements' of older Pokémon, it still felt fresh to me. I switched my team around so much during White before settling on my final six (I think the Oshawott line was the only thing that stayed constant throughout the game). I was a little disappointed once I opened up the post-game routes and older generations became available; it just felt like it was going back to the same old thing.

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
Spell of the Unown is my favourite movie. I saw it at the cinema with my little brother after he'd mainly lost interest in Pokémon and he said it was really good at the end as well. I can't remember if this was before or after I'd caught Entei in my Silver game but I had a soft spot for him anyway and I liked the story and the whole concept. The Misty vs Molly theme remains one of my favourite battle tracks.

I haven't watched the anime for years and the episodes have all merged into one. I would say either the Murkrow or Sneasel episodes, but writing about the Unown movie made me remember the Unown episode where they go into Larvitar's mind/memories. I remember that being a little weird and having really nice music so I guess I'll go with that (looking it up, episode name is Address Unown!).

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would it be?

As always, please explain why. No one word posts! Also yes, today is your opportunity to be whiny as much as you want. :)

Ooh, a good question.

This isn't so much a Pokemon that I hate as it is a Pokemon that most genwunners and other people who are more removed from the Pokemon fandom hate. It would definitely have to be Vanilluxe (its entire evolution line, if the question can extend to that). This is the Pokemon from Gen V that gets so much crap and is cited as "evidence" that Pokemon is now bad and that all of the designers are out of ideas. There are others, but I think this is absolutely the Pokemon that is most used as an example when people want to say that Pokemon is just getting worse. I'll actually admit I used to be one of those people, before I became a little more open minded about Pokemon.

Am I a bit of a small person for caring what other people think? I guess, but I think it's worth it, really. Honestly, I do think it is a bad design, but I am willing to overlook it because of all the other great designs of this generation that I didn't allow myself to see because I was so focused on that one. Maybe if it's gone, people will be quicker to notice how most of the new Pokemon of Generation V were actually pretty good.

I have to say, I really see no point for Chimecho. It's exceedingly rare (in Gen 3 at least, not sure about other Gens), has mediocre stats, is outclassed by other Psychic types, and is overall a huge disappointment. Now, the same can be said for Dunsparce, but at least he can Paraflinch (though not as well as Togekiss and Jirachi). Luvdisc is another useless Pokémon that's worse than Chimecho, but at least they have Heart Scales, which somewhat redeems them. What exactly does Chimecho have? Nothing that's either useful or not outclassed by something else. I tried using Chimecho in a few playthroughs, and I was disappointed every time. I also fail to see why it even got a pre-evo in the first place. If anyone out here actually likes Chimecho, then I offer my sincerest apologies if my rant offended you. Hopefully XY will give Chimecho new life, or it will forever be one of the most pointless Pokémon ever. On the bright side, Unown is more pathetic.

I would erase nothing. Simply put, the only things that I would bother to erase are things that would be too detrimental to the franchise if they were gone (I'm looking at you, Pikachu), or too important to the competitive metagame.

Good question here.
I'd just say zubat/tentacool/etc. but there would be something else taking their place.
khaozz13 made a good point with Chimecho, he's even worse then other bad pokemon: I mean, at least the likes of Unown, Farfetch'd, Luvdisc etc. are used to make puns and silly things, while Chimecho is just useless (and Chingling too, why does this thing exist?).
To say something different, I'd pick Phione. Not only he's competitively irrelevant with bad stats and a almost pure water movepool, but he seems to exist just to break the "rule" that legendaries can't breed, and I hate this thing.

Day 18: I would probably agree with Chimecho, OR the Garbador line. Chimecho looks cute, but is useless otherwise. Garbador however, doesn't even have that benefit. While I love its use Lore wise, (recycling and shit), it has a terrible movepool for its stats, looks terrible, and has terrible abilities. Just my 2 cents.

There are more than a few I can think of, but I think the top spot has to go to Kingdra. It's a really ugly evolution of a pokemon that I thought was cute (Seadra), and in general I'm already prejudiced against most competitive water and dragon types, as I dislike the share of the metagame which they rule. The first time I saw Kingdra in GSC, it was a sprite and I'd never seen its concept art. I was playing in Japanese. I thought it was some horribly crackbaby dragon... then I found out it was the trashy evolution of one of my favorite water-types? What is this nonsense?

Swift Swim only intensified my hatred. I would nuke Kingdra from existence. Give me half a chance and Garchomp and Hydreigon would also be gone (both look like a 13-year-old had a joygasm in the middle of a combination armory-aquarium - they're so "trying too hard") as would Excadrill (you turned that cutie-pie mole into what? And it looks so stupid!) and Tyranitar (grudge for it being the first of many, many unnecessary autoweathers, and it looks stupid.)

On different criteria, I would nuke Finneon and Lumineon before Chimecho; Chimecho at least did something different and is nice for flavor, what the hell do "yet more useless fish" do?

I have to agree on excadrill there. Terrible design.

Before I answer this day's question, I'd like to say that I was happy to see how many people liked Destiny Deoxys!

To answer the question, though:
Luvdisc. This is a mercy killing.

Gulpin and Swalot. I'd say, out of all Pokémon, these have got to be among my least favorite. IMO, both of them are somewhat revolting (perhaps that's not the right word?), but Gulpin is revolting-in-a-cute-way, if you understand what I'm trying to say? All-in-all, they don't have really appealing designs, and I'd even dare to say that they have mediocre designs, at best. Even Garbodor is more bearable. I've never liked them. >:(

A close second would be Torkoal. Now that I think about it, I'm quite dissatisfied with many of the Gen 3 designs, and the potential they could've had. Torkoal is especially evidence of this: no pre-evos, no evolutions, just a fiery turtle in limbo...

The Pokemon I would erase from existence would have to be Froslass. Why? It has ended my streak in the Battle Subway many, many times with such things as Snow Cloak, Double Team spamming, and Destiny Bond. It has caused more than a few ragequits, and when I tried using it myself, it sucked. Maybe I was using it wrong; maybe I'm still countering it wrong; but whatever the reason, I wish it didn't exist.

(Although I will say it has a pretty cool design.)

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would it be?

This is actually difficult in that there are SO MANY i would nuke, even though I love Pokemon in general. My first instinct was to say the Bidoof line, because I hate the stupid look on their faces, and I REALLY hate the fact that they are everywhere in the 4th gen games. EVERYWHERE. It would be fine if they only appeared in one area and nothing else, but NOOOOOO.

However, I have to revise my answer to the Patrat line. This is because it has all the problems the Bidoof line has, but it is also a rip-off of the Bidoof line. I mean, come on, it's bad enough that they made such stupid normal rodents ONCE, let alone TWICE. Plus, those eyes stare directly into your soul.

Prior to gen 4, the Normal rodents were actually kinda cute or at least interesting; now, they are incredibly ugly and annoying. In fact, I really just want to nuke both those lines and be done with it. Please? Honorable mentions of Pokemon who should not exist go to: Mime Jr. and Chingling. Oh and Swoobat's line. They just HAD to replace Zubat with something even more ugly and annoying, didn't they?!

EDIT @ above: butbutbut... Liepard is sooo cute ;_;

How can you not love that face?!?!??!

Bidoof, because it has a terrible design, terrible stats, is just your typical filler Pokémon and it's only useful as a semi decent HM slave.

Day 12: music. The upbeat radio station in GSC Johto was my jam, I'm pretty sure it was the same music as the slots? I used to always turn my radio on as I travelled around, couldn't get enough.
Also the Black & White tv theme makes me emotional.

Day 13: I really enjoyed XD despite its limitations. It was the first time I'd used a Houndoom and Eeveelution during a play through and it taught me a lot about Double Battles.

Day 14: If I took a blue pill for Pokemon I'd pretty much have nothing to live for.

Day 15: Bringing back RSE style contests would be cool. Also having the menu on the touch screen was the best in HGSS.

Day 16: I loved starting fresh, I wish that was happening in XY as well. It really made Unova feel like the other side of the world.

Day 17: My favourite episode is probably either the one where James has enlarged breasts or the first one with Shellos in it (I'd never realised how adorable Shellos was). Of the movies, definitely the first.

Day 18: I feel like I don't have the right to play Arceus and go around smiting 'mon...

11 days, 20 hours to go. If they do a midnight release I'm probably going to cry. This is unbelievably exciting.
