Project Counter That Threat! [Week 6: Doduo]

approved by macle

Counter That Threat!

The goal of Counter That Threat is to find and discuss the best counter for some of the biggest threats in the metagame. A Pokemon will be selected each week, and you will then be able to submit one counter for that Pokemon. Please include a set along with a description that explains why you chose that set and how it effectively counters the current week's threat. After some time, a voting period will begin in which you can vote for the Pokemon that you believe is the best counter.

Rules:
  • You may not reserve a Pokemon to post later.
  • You may only nominate one Pokemon and make one vote per week.
  • You may not submit a Pokemon that has already been nominated in the same week.
  • You may not vote for your own nomination.
  • Avoid gimmicks and unviable Pokemon. A good counter has utility outside of countering the given threat.

Week 1's threat is Berry Juice Mudbray:

Mudbray @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Stamina
EVs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 156 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Rock Slide
- Close Combat

With great coverage, a great ability, and a great Attack stat, Mudbray has become a large threat in the metagame that can be difficult to deal with.
The voting period will begin at some point on Saturday. You may now post :]

Well, my answer for it is...

Koffing @ Eviolite
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 196 HP / 76 Def / 236 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Bomb
- Fire Blast
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Being Ground-inmune thanks to Levitate, and having such good defensive stats and a great defensive typing, makes Koffing a great counter of Mudbray, being 3HKO of the neutral coverage of the aforementioned. If Koffing is close to be fainted, it can recover itself completely with Rest and hitting with special moves is a great point for it, as Stamina only raises the Defense.

Pumpkaboo-Super @ Eviolite
Ability: Frisk
Level: 5
EVs: 204 HP / 196 Def / 4 SpA / 76 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Will-O-Wisp
- Fire Blast
- Synthesis

Resists its ground moves, heavy slam does only about 32-40% and is immune to close combat. It is a good mon to counter mudbray and also handles most grass types which are paired with mudbray with this moveset.
crit heavy slam does 48-60% + normal heavy slam does 32-40% so you have a quite good chance to survive.
At last giga drain 3hkoes mudbray[Berry Juice] and increasing its hp.

Bronzor @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 64 HP / 4 Atk / 228 Def / 4 SpA / 148 SpD / 12 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Recycle
- Psychic
- Heavy Slam

Yeah... Bronzor is immune to Earhquake, resists Rock Slide and Heavy Slam, and is not weak to Close Combat. It also has reliable recovery thanks to Recycle + Berry Juice (Bray can't Knock Off). Some calcs:
Mudbray Earthquake vs. Levitate Bronzor: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
196+ Atk Mudbray Heavy Slam (40 BP) vs. 64 HP / 228+ Def Bronzor: 2-2 (8.6 - 8.6%) -- possibly the worst move ever
196+ Atk Mudbray Rock Slide vs. 64 HP / 228+ Def Bronzor: 3-4 (13 - 17.3%) -- possible 6HKO
196+ Atk Mudbray Close Combat vs. 64 HP / 228+ Def Bronzor: 10-12 (43.4 - 52.1%) -- 6.6% chance to 2HKO

4 SpA Bronzor Psychic vs. 116 HP / 0 SpD Mudbray: 7-10 (28 - 40%) -- 98.9% chance to 3HKO
After one Close Combat:
4 SpA Bronzor Psychic vs. -1 116 HP / 0 SpD Mudbray: 12-15 (48 - 60%) -- 90.2% chance to 2HKO

So yeah, Bronzor doesn't take any damage from Mudbray, can heal back up with Recycle + Juice, sets op SR for free, and 2HKOes if Mudbray decides to use its best move against Bronzor

Time for the best counter

Skiddo @ Eviolite

Heavy slam does max of 38%. You bulk up and milk drink. You set up and this thing is surprisingly bulky. I've had a new liking to skiddo and it's an overall ok mon. Definitely has a cool niche

Slowpoke @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 116 SpA / 116 SpD
Bold Nature
- Slack Off
- Scald
- Psychic
- Thunder Wave / Fire Blast / Calm Mind

Slowpoke is physically bulky af so it doesn't mind any of Mudbray's moves and the most threatening move Mudbray has against it is Earthquake, which 3HKOes it but Slowpoke can 2HKO Mudbray with Scald, and Slack Off at any time tanking Mudbray entirely. As for the other moves, they 4HKO Slowpoke or less, also Stamina doesn't matter because Scald is a special move.
196+ Atk Mudbray Earthquake vs. 116 HP / 156+ Def Eviolite Slowpoke: 9-12 (33.3 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Mudbray @ Eviolite
Ability: Stamina
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 200 Def / 76 SpA / 76 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Mud Bomb
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Special Mudbray counters Mudbray. Click Rest after the first EQ, then once Stamina boosts start building up, the opposing Mudbray can't touch you outside of crits.

Mudbray may think its safe from all physical attackers. Mudbray might think it is a check to all rock types. Mudbray might think it can live its donkey life in peace.

Mudbray is wrong.

Level: 5
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 204 Atk / 76 SpD / 212 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang

The Scenario:
In comes Mudbray. Its donkey tail wags menacingly up and down as it threatens to boost its defenses to levels that your team cannot deal with. Your opponent scans your party and sees that it appears you have no way to deal with his ground-type ass. He grins. "gg" he types into the chat bar, confident in his soon-to-come victory.

But you know something he doesn't. Quickly you switch in your trusty Tyrunt, which lives any of Mudbray's attacks due to Sturdy. Your opponent merely chuckles. "That physical Dragon-type cannot possibly damage my Mudbray!" he thinks. He assumes you are sacrificing your Tyrunt to the power of his mighty ass. He is still convinced he has won.

Then, the temperature drops below 0.

In a single second, the tides of the battle turn. In a single turn, Tyrunt unleashes a devestation that will haunt future generations of Ground-type donkeys to come. That's right: Tyrunt unleashes S U B Z E R O S L A M M E R.

Your opponent weeps in consternation as their Mudbray falls off the screen, defeated. "Mudbray fainted!" his screen reads. This time, it is you smugly typing "gg" into your chat bar. This time, it is you who knows that you have won. Subzero slammer has claimed another victim.

This mon may look absolutly shit at first glance (kinda is but ive enjoyed it) but it actually has many uses. One of them is absolutly wrecking mudbray.

196+ Atk Mudbray Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 196 HP / 196 Def Duskull: 10-12 (47.6 - 57.1%) -- 80.9% chance to 2HKO

That is the most mudbray can do to this MONSTER. After eating one of these Duskull gets recovery and then presses willo. Duskull can get a free switch on mudbray when it uses cc or eq as well. Duskull also supports your team very well. It can memento to help sweepers and it can burn things. If shit gets really bad then you can destiny bond and kill either mudbray if you are low or any other mon on the opps team.

We should have banned duskull instead of missy wtf.

Zen Headbutt is for Fighting switch-ins and the 2 Poison types, while Giga Drain is obv for Mudbray and other ground/rock types. Rock Slide is for random Flying type switch-ins, while Leech Seed and Spike are generally just good options. EVs gives great mixed bulk, while still offering solid attack stats (Semi-solid at least).
