This is my first competitive team on Smogon and Shoddy. I started with the thought of a Dragonite. I wanted to try it out as a lead since I’ve heard good things about it. I decided to use this set:
Dragonite @ Life Orb
252 Atk, 252 SpA, 4 Spe
Quiet
-Draco Meteor
-Fire Blast
-Extremespeed
-Earthquake
Draco Meteor OHKOs almost any lead in the game. EQ and Fire Blast are used for steels and specially based leads. Extremespeed allows this set to shine, as it doesn’t really have to worry about Focus Sashes. With the combination of these moves, DDnite is guaranteed to take out at least one pokemon with a few exceptions like Swampert and Focus Sash Mamoswine.
Then I needed a Stealth Rocker. Swampert is very skilled at setting up rocks and shutting down the offense. So I went with this set.
Swampert @ Leftovers
252 HP/4 Atk/252 Def
Relaxed
-Stealth Rock
-Earthquake
-Ice Beam
-Roar
Stealth Rock on the first turn. Then depending on the pokemon, either attack or roar it out. This also adds support against steel-trapping Magnezone as it absorbs Thunderbolt, is resistant to HP fire, and can roar any substitutes out.
As Swampert is an important part of the team, I needed a way to protect him. I chose a steel, Jirachi, as it resists Stealth Rock and Grass, Swampert’s only weakness.
Jirachi @ Leftovers
240 HP/160 Def/76 SpD/32 Spe
Impish
-Wish
-U turn
-Thunder Wave
-Iron Head
It takes most hits Swampert cannot, and hits the grass types back for super effective damage. Thunder Wave further helps to cripple choice scarves. 5/6 of my pokemon cannot recover outside of leftovers, so I also needed some wish support. Jirachi adds this to the team. Wish also works well since the 4 of the 5 pokemon needing wish support are resistant to stealth rock.
Then, I needed a good counter to Mixape and Heatran, and Latias provides good resistance to both.
Latias @ Life Orb
4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
Timid
-Draco Meteor
-Surf
-Thunderbolt
-Recover
Latias easily counters all forms of Mixape and Heatran. Given the fact that these 2 pokemon troubled me the most, I decided to switch Azelf out for Latias. Also, Surf and Thunderbolt have good coverage.
One of the most annoying pokemon (and one of the most used) is Scizor. I hate Scizor with a passion, so I usually dedicate a spot in teams to a steel-trapper
Magnezone @ Leftovers
40 Atk/252 SpA/216 Spe
Naive
-Substitute
-Hidden Power Fire
-Thunderbolt
-Explosion
Magnezone comes in on most steel types and wrecks everything steel with thunderbolt and HP Fire. When it is low on health, it goes out with a boom.
Stealth Rock is an important part of this team. Because of this, I needed a Spin-blocker to help me out. Rotom-A is a very good option.
Rotom-H@ Choice Scarf
200 HP/56 SpA/252 Spe
Timid
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow ball
-Overheat
-Trick
I chose the Heat Rotom for Overheat’s coverage along with Thunderbolt and Shadow ball. Trick takes out things that wall me. Scarf allows me to outspeed things that would normally outspeed me.
Overall Team thoughts: This is a bulky, offensive team that initially punches holes in leads and any switch-ins. Mid-game centers around eliminating steels and using roar to build up Stealth Rock damage or spin-blocking with Rotom. Late-game is focused around setting up a sweep with either Magnezone if it’s alive or Latias.
Possible Changes: Switch Heat Rotom out for Grass Rotom. This allows for more coverage, as I already have a counter for steels. Also, Togekiss can be switched out for a mix-sweeper because the team is more specially based. Tyranitar could also be used as most of the team is sand-friendly, and Sandstorm would add even more passive damage.
Whats your opinion?
Edits in Bold
Edit 1: Changed Magnezone to Choice Scarf. Changed Togekiss to Life Orb Azelf.
Edit 2: Changed LO Azelf to LO Latias. Switched Magnezone back to Substitute set. Gave Jirachi Iron Head. Changed Toastom to Scarfed Set.
