Tournament DCL II - Format Discussion

1. I strongly echo hackers thoughts on the flex slot. I think this is a terrible idea and there is no way to balance it. In particular, I agree with the first two points he made and refer to the discontent of the DPL player base this season in having the flex slots week-to-week. Complaints often mentioned the later time for prep and unnecessary delays, especially for Australian players who would only get their match ups Monday night or Tuesday morning. I think the only way to fairly include the flex slot is to have the tier known beforehand, whether it be USUM/ORAS/SS Natdex.

2. I like the FA changes, there definitely seemed to be too little last season. On a similiar topic of discussion, I think that 3 teams minimum for each gen should be the way moving forward. 2 teams each gen seems to result in the same boring cores because teams are afraid to take risks and ruin their drafts. I would be interested to see if this would foster more creativity in drafting moving forward.

3. Having not experienced retains I'm not sure about them. I will say that dynasties would have to be part of the system in some way. I'm not sure about the carry-over in terms of captain cores from last DCL but it would be unfair if some cores were more advantaged than others simply because they were able to retain players from previous seasons whereas new cores were unable to benefit in the same way. Maybe this is system to introduce in later seasons when the captain cores and franchises get more established.
Oh I 100% 2nd 3 teams per gen yeah. 2 is super ass especially if that tier is forced to use both teams a week. Which I guess you can use the arguement of it makes drafting more important but still allows for more creativity as kynan said which is always good for spectating the games at least

Flex Slot for Game 8: I think the idea of a cycling flex slot is something cool and could keep the weeks more fresh and add intrigue. I believe this should be a locked in slot at the beginning of the season though and not something decided by captains each week. Something revealed before auction preferably so that captains know how they want to auction beforehand and not be blindsided by new info after.

Dynasty: I have mixed feelings on this but I believe it all comes down to how it is ran. Some of the coolest teams in team tours are the ones that build up history through competing in multiple seasons/multiple tours such as TOE or WIG so in that respect I think that would be pretty nice. However, I think naming and logo rights should belong to the captains and not the tour itself, sort of like an intellectual property idea. I think if the captains who came up with the name want to retire the name instead of passing it down to another captain core for another season, it should be their right to do so.
I also don't want captain core decisions coming down to whoever has the rights to the name of a previous champion core. Captain pairs should always be decided on who the best pairs are, not who has the team name of a previous champion. If those two overlap (which I am assuming most of the time they will) then great.

Retainers: I am vehemently opposed to this idea. Every season the captains cores should be entering the auction on somewhat equal footing, allowing retainers not only minimizes the important skill of auctioning but also leaves new teams at a disadvantage who would be randomly assigned a retainer instead of having their pick of someone who carried their team the previous season.

I pretty much agree with all of this. However with just like how kcric said I feel the only way to balance the flex slot is if the tier is known prior so the actual auction isn’t sabotaged by managers not realising that they should have actually drafted more support for a tier. As someone who in DPL had half a team of Australians, managing with time constraints going into these weeks half the time was really frustrating having an entire day wasted waiting for a tier to be picked. it’s also not fair for managers to be like “now I need to draft an extra sub for each tier” so I would probably only limit the flex slots to ORAS and USUM.

Hello there. As mentioned in the last post, we have a poll now to determine the 8th slot in DCL. We will be using this poll to determine people's preferences for the final slot, which will inform the mod team's decision. In other words, we reserve the right to make a choice in a specific direction if the poll's results are super close, or if there is a large gap between "qualified responses" and the general response.

Flex slot means, over the course of the seven week regular season, there will be two ORAS, two SM, two SS, and one VGC week - aka, the 678vgc876 that has been brought up in this thread. Though, the actual order may be adjusted and announced prior to the randomization of which teams play who each week and the player auction.
edit: At request of the mod team for clarity's sake: if Flex slot wins, it will be 678vgc876 as has been discussed.

Qualified responses are folks who have accomplished a high placement in one of our individual tournaments or participated in one of our major team tournaments. Other responses will not be disregarded, but it is important for us to know what this group wants, as we believe that they in general have a higher-than-average likelihood of participating in DCL II.

This is a ranked choice poll. Your first selection is the one you want the most, your second selection the one you want second most, and so on.

THIS POLL CLOSES SUNDAY NIGHT AT 11:59 GMT-4

Just so we're all on the same page format wise for some of the set in stone formats that the nitty gritty could be worked out: SV's Tera system will be Tera Preview with 2 captains totaling 25 points or less. USUM will have 2 Z-Captains per draft. VGC will be Regulation F with Tera Preview. Once manager signups go up, this isn't open for further changing, so if you've got a bone to pick with something here, do so.

Hiya!! As tiering has gone on, this has changed somewhat - tiering for SV is now basing their structure off of a Tera Tax system, enhancing the 2 captains and 25 point limit we had. Now, Pokemon don't cost five points more than they should just because they're potentially an option for Tera, and instead cost as they are actually valued, with potentially an additional cost if you want them as a Tera Captain. Same as it was before, where you have 2 Captains and they can't be more than 25 points combined, but now a Tera Captain Ogerpon can cost differently from one that isn't a Tera Captain.

This is equivalent to the first time a wifi league tried free tera with preview (5 months ago)

Good morning! Thanks so much to everyone who took the time both to respond to this thread and to vote on the poll.

After tallying up the votes, the eighth slot will be a flex slot, with over half the first-choice votes from both the poll in totality and among top placers in our circuit tournaments.

The slot will have a predetermined rotation for the regular season between ORAS, USUM, SS, and VGC, and during playoffs, the higher seed will choose the tier for the flex slot.

Thanks again, hope everyone is looking forward to the tournament!

Just for clarification, in the case of playoffs, would the flex slot choices still be limited to one of ORAS, USUM, SS, and VGC, or would the higher seed be able to add another SV slot in the flex slot tier?

Instead of the higher seed getting to pick the flex game format, how about the team that can show off a player flexing the biggest muscles, gets to pick?

As it stands currently, the mod team are not intending to push legacies or allow retains for DCL II. This isn't to say that managerial duos can't return or folks can inherit identities they have a connection to, but there won't be any mechanism in place to encourage or enforce that. Additionally, there will be no retains at all, though we will again have the manager self-buy system we had for DCL I. These two points, retains and legacies, are still somewhat up in the air, so if folks would like to push further in a direction on this, there are still open ears.

Other things, like the "one more draft" thing or the Tera tiering / FA / other notes are all things we intend to implement or are already underway with. There is some flexibility here, but these things are functionally set in stone barring something significant changing.

And obviously, until the thread is locked, new things related to DCL II's format can be brought up as desired. Closing in on the manager signups, at which point this thread will be closed and barring unforeseen circumstances all should be set format-wise.
