Ubers Deoxys-D

Overview
########

Deoxys-D's stellar defenses, decent Speed, and access to excellent auxiliary moves in Recover and Taunt grant it a niche as one of the premier Spikes users in the Ubers metagame. In addition, its typing allows it to check both Mewtwo and Deoxys-A, two of the biggest threats in the tier. Conversely, this typing leaves it very vulnerable to common Dark-, Ghost-, and Bug-type moves, which will still inflict severe damage on Deoxys-D due to its mediocre HP stat. Moreover, the newly buffed Defog makes Deoxys-D's job even more difficult, as the entry hazards it lays can now be removed much more easily than in previous generations. Nevertheless, Deoxys-D remains an effective supporter, provided that its desirable traits are taken full advantage of.

Spikes
########
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Taunt / Toxic
move 4: Knock Off / Night Shade
ability: Pressure
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
nature: Careful / Calm

Moves
========

Spikes is the main reason to use Deoxys-D. With its impressive defenses, it's often able to set up multiple layers before switching out, as well as come in multiple times throughout a match to use the move. Recover makes this significantly easier, and it can render Deoxys-D incredibly difficult to take down in general. Taunt allows Deoxys-D to safely set up Spikes against nearly any defensive Pokemon by protecting it from hindrances such as status moves. It also stops opposing entry hazard users from doing their job and can be used on predicted switches to faster Taunt or Defog users that don't force Deoxys-D out, such as Thundurus, Mewtwo, and support Arceus formes. However, Toxic can be used in its place in order to place a timer on bulky Pokemon that lack the means to cure status, and Deoxys-D is a great Toxic staller thanks to Recover. Knock Off is the preferred move for the final slot due to its overall utility and ability to OHKO Deoxys-A, though Night Shade can be used instead if Mega Mewtwo X is of greater concern. Both moves will manage a 4HKO on Mega Mewtwo Y.

Set Details
========

A specially defensive EV spread is chosen over a physically defensive one due to the abundance of special attacks in the Ubers environment. If Taunt is used, Speed investment is viable in order to outspeed and Taunt Landorus-T and other Pokemon with base 90 Speed.

Usage Tips
========

Deoxys-D has two main goals in any given match: setting up Spikes and countering opposing Psychic-types. Thus, if a Mewtwo or Deoxys-A is not present on your opponent's team, Deoxys-D should be switched in whenever possible to threaten to get Spikes up. If either of the two is present, however, Deoxys-D should be carefully conserved until the foe's moveset is scouted; it needs most of its health intact in order to safely switch in against Mewtwo with Shadow Ball or Deoxys-A packing Knock Off or Dark Pulse.

Aside from this, Taunt or Toxic should be used on predicted switches to Defog users. Landing a Toxic will usually prove effective for the remainder of the match, as most Defog users cannot cure themselves of status problems without cleric support. It is worth noting that Deoxys-D can stall out low PP moves, such as Sacred Fire and Spacial Rend, with the combination of Pressure and Recover. Taunt and Toxic both complement this strategy nicely.

Team Options
========

Deoxys-D's primary role is to set up Spikes. As such, Pokemon that can assist it in keeping Spikes up make excellent teammates. Mega Gengar is particularly adept at this—not only can it spinblock, but it's capable of trapping, Taunting, and KOing the opponent's Defog user. Dark Arceus, Yveltal, and Darkrai can take Ghost- and Dark-type moves for Deoxys-D, and Darkrai in particular can outspeed and Taunt support Arceus formes before they can use Defog. Fairy-types resist Bug- and Dark-type moves, and sweepers such as Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Fairy Arceus appreciate Deoxys-D's Spikes support. Thundurus has access to the useful combination of Prankster and Taunt and can use Volt Switch to bring Deoxys-D in safely. Finally, Sticky Web or paralysis support works wonders for Deoxys-D, allowing it to outpace and Taunt opposing Defog Arceus formes.

Lead
########
name: Lead
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Spikes
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Thunder Wave
ability: Pressure
item: Mental Herb
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
nature: Calm

Moves
========

When used in a dedicated lead role, Deoxys-D can afford to drop Recover in favor of Stealth Rock; its bulk alone can often guarantee that it sets up Stealth Rock and at least one layer of Spikes. With the combination of Taunt, Thunder Wave, and Mental Herb, Deoxys-D is able to safely set up entry hazards against any Taunt or Defog user that lacks Magic Coat. Taunt is also useful for foiling opposing entry hazard setters, while Thunder Wave can turn Pokemon that rely on their Speed into dead weight.

Set Details
========

The listed EVs and nature minimize residual damage and make Deoxys-D as bulky as possible on the special side, allowing it to survive many powerful and/or super effective attacks such as Choice Scarf Kyogre's Water Spout and offensive Yveltal's Dark Pulse. A Mental Herb allows Deoxys-D to block Taunt and retaliate with a Thunder Wave followed by its own Taunt.

Usage Tips
========

As previously mentioned, the combination of Taunt, Thunder Wave, and Mental Herb is key to this set's success. If the opponent leads with a Taunt user, simply use Thunder Wave as the Mental Herb activates and use Taunt on the following turn. Hazards can then be set up freely. In the case of Pokemon with Prankster, use Taunt instead of Thunder Wave. Additionally, this variant of Deoxys-D should not be left in against Magic Coat users, as they wall it completely. If the opponent does not lead with a Taunt or Defog user, however, Deoxys-D should usually start with either Taunt or Thunder Wave and then proceed to set up entry hazards.

Team Options
========

This variant of Deoxys-D aims to set up as many entry hazards as it can before fainting, so its best teammates are Pokemon that can ensure they stay up. This makes fast Taunt users, particularly those that can outspeed Arceus, mandatory teammates. Darkrai, Mewtwo, and Thundurus are notable examples, though slower Taunt users such as Yveltal can also work if the opponent's Defog user is Taunted on the switch or is slowed by paralysis. Yveltal also poses a major threat to Defog Giratina-O. Mega Gengar is arguably the best teammate for lead Deoxys-D, as once it is Mega-Evolved, it can outspeed, Taunt, and trap support Arceus formes with Shadow Tag, while also being able to spinblock. Additionally, other spinblockers such as Ghost Arceus, Aegislash, and the Giratina formes are useful teammates as well.

Other Options
########

Many other move options are available to Deoxys-D, though it is hard-pressed to find room for them. Magic Coat can bounce status moves and Taunt back to the opponent. Counter and Mirror Coat are each capable of securing a surprise KO. Reflect and Light Screen can be used, but Deoxys-D is better off supporting its team with Spikes. Psycho Boost can surprise Mega Gengar in particular and has a small chance to OHKO it.

Other item choices are also viable. Red Card often allows Deoxys-D to guarantee multiple layers of Spikes or phaze out a boosting sweeper. Shed Shell can be used to escape from Shadow Tag users, but Deoxys-D has methods of dealing with them directly.

Checks & Counters
########

**Faster Taunt Users**: These include Gengar, Darkrai, Yveltal, Deoxys-S, and Thundurus. The first three are also capable of hitting Deoxys-D with a super effective STAB move. However, every Taunt user needs to be wary of Magic Coat or Mental Herb.

**Mega Gengar**: Though it qualifies as a Taunt user, Mega Gengar is particularly troublesome for Deoxys-D as it can easily trap and eliminate it if running Shadow Ball. Even without Shadow Ball, it can pick off a weakened Deoxys-D with Sludge Wave.

**Genesect**: Genesect can inflict massive damage on Deoxys-D with a +1 U-turn and pivot out to something that can finish the job.

**Scizor**: Scizor threatens Deoxys-D with U-turn and can use Defog to clear the field of entry hazards.

**Giratina-O**: Giratina-O can remove Deoxys-D's hazards with Defog, and mixed variants can KO it with Shadow Ball. However, is severely crippled by Toxic.

**Ghost Arceus**: Ghost Arceus can threaten to set up, use Defog, or outright KO Deoxys-D with a Ghost-type move.

**Dark Arceus**: Calm Mind + Refresh Dark Arceus does not fear any of Deoxys-D's moves and can threaten it with a super effective Judgment.

**Tyranitar**: Tyranitar easily defeats Deoxys-D with its super effective Payback, though it is incapable of reliably Pursuit trapping Deoxys-D due to Recover.

**Powerful Wallbreakers**: Deoxys-D is bulky, but it cannot take extremely powerful attacks, such as Choice Specs Kyogre's Water Spout.

**Magic Coat and Magic Bounce**: Magic Coat users, particularly those that are not weak to Knock Off, can safely reflect hazards, status moves, and Taunt back at Deoxys-D. Similarly, Pokemon with Magic Bounce completely shut down Deoxys-D's attempts at setting up hazards, though they are very rare in Ubers. However, Espeon and Xatu dislike Knock Off.

**Toxic**: Toxic removes any stalling capability that Deoxys-D has, provided that it lacks cleric support.

Overview
########

  • Great defenses, bad HP, good ability
  • Recover
  • Typing that lets it check/counter Mewtwo and Deoxys-A
  • Spikes and Stealth Rock
  • Has a pretty fast Taunt for a defensive Pokemon (and is not completely shut down by fast Taunt users itself, if it can Taunt them on the switch)
  • Dark/Ghost moves are everywhere in Ubers
  • Hazards can easily be removed with Defog
  • Bulky, but still OHKOed by things like Specs Kyogre's Water Spout
  • Severe 4MSS

Spikes
########
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Taunt / Toxic
move 4: Knock Off / Night Shade
ability: Pressure
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
nature: Careful / Calm

Moves
========

  • Spikes is the reason to use Deoxys-D
  • Recover is Recover
  • Taunt lets you stop things like SR Dialga, Giratina, Heatran, pretty much any defensive Pokemon. It can also be used on the switch against opposing Taunt users that don't force Deoxys-D out (Thundurus, Deoxys-S, Mewtwo) and Defog Arceus
  • Toxic puts a timer on bulky switch-ins, Deoxys-D is a great Toxic staller with Recover
  • Knock Off has great utility overall and OHKOes Deoxys-A
  • Night Shade is chosen over Seismic Toss because it's more important for Deoxys-D to be able to damage the Ghost-types in Ubers than the Normal-types. It's better than Knock Off against Mega Mewtwo X

Set Details
========

  • A specially defensive spread is the way to go in Ubers
  • You can run some Speed EVs to outspeed and Taunt other base 90s

Usage Tips
========

  • Get up Spikes
  • Taunt other walls, as well as Defog users and other Taunt users on the switch
  • Toxic stall things with Recover
  • PP stalling is often a viable option thanks to Pressure

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that appreciate Spikes damage
  • Fast Taunt users to stop Defog
  • Spinblockers
  • Pokemon that can take Ghost/Dark/Bug Attacks (so notably Fairy- and Dark-types)

Other Options
########

  • Stealth Rock
  • Magic Coat
  • Thunder Wave
  • Seismic Toss
  • Counter
  • Mirror Coat
  • Reflect
  • Light Screen
  • Mental Herb
  • Red Card for dedicated hazards + to phaze out +2 Xerneas
  • That set Fireburn posted about

Checks & Counters
########

  • Faster Taunt users, many of which (Gengar, Yveltal, Darkrai) can hit Deoxys-D with super effective STAB moves
  • Genesect
  • Ghost Arceus
  • Dark Arceus
  • Powerful wallbreakers
  • Toxic

No Mental Herb in OO :(

Also I think SR should get a moves mention but nothing bigger.

Mention that Thundy and Sableye hard-troll it cuz Taunt is a pansy manly move.

Also, maybe try saying how Deo-D plays slightly differently depending on Taunt/Toxic in terms of lead or hazard stacker (i.e. Taunt smashing other hazard leads except Deo-S or Toxic being a better opportunity to set up hazards on Defoggers)

Two cents on the table.

Consider testing a suicide lead set of SR/Spikes/Taunt/Thunder Wave @ Mental Herb with max HP, enough speed for defensive Yveltal, and rest in SDef. Basically works like Deo-S except bulkier and more effective at shutting down Taunters and Defoggers with Thunder Wave, Taunt, and Mental Herb. It's also marginally more useful than Deo-S midgame since it can take a hit to TWave something if needed. The biggest advantage of using Deo-D is bulk (so not being able to shut it down with priority, doesn't need sash, TWave + Taunt trolls Defog Arceus hard), and its only OHKOed outright by stuff like Specs Kyogre Water Spout.

Just an idea since I've seen it used fairly effectively.

Why doesn't Unnerve affect the herbs :(
As far as checks and counters though, Specs Ogre 1HKOes this thing, I know from experience :(, probably deserves a special mention in CC since I think it is the only special attacker that does (if not the only attacker).
252 SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Deoxys-D in Rain: 313-370 (102.9 - 121.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If anything, I hope me getting destroyed saved you some calcing time at any rate

Is it time to have fun with the damage calculator? :)

252+ SpA Life Orb Dark Aura Yveltal Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Deoxys-D: 260-307 (85.5 - 100.9%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO (almost)

+2 252+ SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Deoxys-D: 237-279 (77.9 - 91.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (wow)

also, i think this analysis needs more magic coat, i really do. all the things you can bounce back - Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, Stealth Rock, Spikes, Taunt... if you think about it, if you REALLY REALLY don't want SR on your side you can Magic Coat it until you die, which gives you a chance to kill/pressure/force out the SR user. also, Magic Coat completely screws up Deoxys-S, as it can't hurt you with anything at all (this is Ubers, no stupid LO Dark Pulse rubbish here), and you can counter-taunt it, get it to set up SR/Spikes for you, or simply just prevent it from doing its job in the first few turns and then set up your own SR/whatever later (Deoxys-Defense tends to survive more than Deoxys-Speed does). Also, Agility/Taunt/Toxic/Recover is fun as you can Agility on the switch to, say, MMY, Taunt it first then Toxic it and click Recover forever. More of a throwback to DPP or even ADV tho really :P

Man, those are some cool calcs! Magic Coat would be very great if you decide to use Deo-D as more of a lead, and makes Thundy and Sableye leads super butthurt. Methinks TWave should be up in a Moves section mention b/c Deo-D can at least take a hit, para a non-Ground or non-Electric type threat (Ogre, Xern, etc.), and Recover the next turn. It very useful imo even when compared to Taunt/Toxic.

I've tested the set Fireburn posted and I think it (as a whole) is actually worthy of being on the analysis, at least as an OO mention. I'll wait for more opinions, though.

OO that set for now. Mention that Magic Coat allows it to check Mewtwo that attempt to Taunt it, but it can backfire if it Calm minds.

Mention a spread with significant speed creep (like 60 speed or so) for massive speed creep over fellow base 90's such as Groudon in Set Details, if for no other reason than to add content to that section. The speed is really nice with Taunt!

Mention Arceus-Ghost, Darkrai, and Arceus-Dark in Checks & Counters.

QC 2/3

I'll talk to QC later about that set and if we like it then you can always add it in later. For now keep it in OO.

Mega Gengar deserves its own section in Checks & Counters. It completely destroys Deoxys-D if it packs Shadow Ball, and even if it doesn't it can pick off weakened Deoxys-D. Speaking of which, I'd mention Psycho Boost in OO to surprise Mega Gengar, as well as hit stuff like Landorus-T kind of hard. It struggles against Mewtwo, however.

Expand on usage tips a little bit more. Mention that there is nothing wrong with spamming Toxic if you anticipate a Defog user not named Skarmory or Steel Arceus to come in. Deoxys-D matches up well with most Defog users, barring stuff like Ghost Arceus.

This looks good, I'll stamp after QC talks about the set!

In set details, mention an alternative spread that packs enough speed to outrun defensive Yveltal (you need to reach like 236 or something, I forget exactly how much).
Never mind.

Recover makes this significantly easier, and in general can render make Deoxys-D incredibly difficult to take down in general. However, Toxic can be used in its place in order to place a timer on bulky Pokemon that lack the means to cure status;, and Deoxys-D is a great Toxic staller thanks to Recover. Knock Off is the preferred option in move for the final slot due to its overall utility and ability to OHKO Deoxys-A, though Night Shade can be used instead if Mega Mewtwo X is of greater concern. Both moves will manage a 4HKO on Mega Mewtwo Y.

A specially defensive EV spread is chosen over a physically defensive spread one due to the abundance of special attacks in the Ubers environment. If Taunt is used, Speed investment is viable in order to outspeed and Taunt Landorus-T and other Pokemon with base 90 Speed.

Usage Tips
========

Deoxys-D has two main goals in any given match: setting up Spikes and countering opposing Psychic-types. Thus, if a Mewtwo or Deoxys-A is not present on your opponent's team, Deoxys-D should be switched in whenever possible and to threaten to get Spikes up.

========

Fairy-types resist Bug- and Dark-types Dark-type moves, and sweepers such as Geomancy Xerneas and Calm Mind Fairy Arceus appreciate Deoxys-D's Spikes support. Thundurus has access to the useful combination of Prankster and Taunt, and can use Volt Switch to bring Deoxys-D in safely. Finally, Sticky Web or paralysis support works wonders for Deoxys-D, allowing it to outpace and Taunt opposing Defog Arceus formes.

evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

Moves
========

When used in a dedicated lead role, Deoxys-D can afford to drop Recover in favor of Stealth Rock; its bulk alone can often guarantee that it sets up Stealth Rock and at least one layer of Spikes. With the combination of Taunt, Thunder Wave, and a Mental Herb, Deoxys-D is able to safely set up entry hazards against any Taunt or Defog user that lacks Magic Coat. Taunt is also useful for foiling opposing entry hazard setters, while Thunder Wave can turn Pokemon that rely on their Speed into dead weight.

Set Details
========

The listed EVs and nature make Deoxys-D as bulky as possible on the special side, allowing it to survive many powerful and/or super effective attacks such as Choice Scarf Kyogre's Water Spout and offensive Yveltal's Dark Pulse. A Mental Herb allows Deoxys-D to block Taunt and retaliate with a Thunder Wave followed by its own Taunt.

Usage Tips
========

As previously mentioned, the combination of Taunt, Thunder Wave, and Mental Herb is key to this set's success. If the opponent leads with a Taunt user, simply use Thunder Wave as the Mental Herb activates and then use Taunt on the following turn.

========

This variant of Deoxys-D aims to set up as many entry hazards as it can before fainting, so its best teammates are Pokemon that can ensure they stay up. This makes fast Taunt users, particularly those that can outspeed Arceus, mandatory teammates. Darkrai, Mewtwo, and Thundurus are notable examples, though slower Taunt users such as Yveltal can also work if the opponent's Defog user is Taunted on the switch or is slowed by paralysis or Sticky Web. Yveltal also poses a major threat to Defog Giratina-O. Mega Gengar is arguably the best teammate for lead Deoxys-D;, as once it is Mega-Evolved, it can outspeed, Taunt, and trap support Arceus formes with Shadow Tag, and it is also capable of spinblocking while also being able to spinblock. On that note, Additionally, other spinblockers such as Ghost Arceus and the Giratina formes are useful teammates as well.

**Genesect**: Genesect can inflict massive damage on Deoxys-D with a +1 U-turn and pivot out into to something that can finish the job.

**Giratina-O**: Giratina-O can remove Deoxys-D's hazards with Defog, and mixed variants can KO it with Shadow Ball. It However, is severely crippled by Toxic, however.

**Ghost Arceus**: Ghost Arceus threatens can threaten to set up, use Defog, or outright KO Deoxys-D with a Ghost-type move.

**Dark Arceus**: Calm Mind + Refresh Dark Arceus does not fear any of Deoxys-D's moves and threatens can threaten it with a super effective Judgment.

**Tyranitar**: Tyranitar easily defeats Deoxys-D with its super effective Payback, though it is incapable of reliably Pursuit trapping Deoxys-D due to Recover.

**Powerful Wallbreakers**: Deoxys-D is bulky, but it cannot take extremely strong powerful (totally subjective change but it sounds way cooler) attacks, such as Choice Specs Kyogre's Water Spout.

However, Espeon and Xatu dislike Knock Off, however.

**Toxic**: Toxic removes any stalling capability that Deoxys-D has, provided that it lacks cleric support.
Overview
