Battle Spot Diggersby

BSS Circuit Co-host
[SET]
name: Focus Sash
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Quick Attack
move 3: Thunder Punch / Fire Punch
move 4: Rock Tomb / Swords Dance
item: Focus Sash
ability: Huge Power
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Diggersby equipped with a Focus Sash serves as an effective lead and revenge killer, dealing massive damage with Huge Power-boosted STAB attacks and coverage options.

* Quick Attack is used to revenge kill opposing Focus Sash or very weakened Pokemon.

* Thunder Punch allows Diggersby to revenge kill Gyarados in particular and is also useful coverage against the likes of Togekiss and Corviknight.

* Alternatively, Fire Punch helps Diggersby beat a variety of Steel-types, most notably Ferrothorn and Durant.

* Rock Tomb helps Diggersby slow down Max Airstream threats such as Togekiss and beat Focus Sash Cinderace by outspeeding its Sucker Punch with Quick Attack.

* Swords Dance can be opted for to boost its stats on predicted switches or in order to secure an OHKO against slower Pokemon. This has the added benefit of boosting Quick Attack to help further chip incoming Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Dynamax Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Bounce
move 3: Thunder Punch / Fire Punch
move 4: Giga Impact / Swords Dance
item: Life Orb / Lum Berry
ability: Huge Power
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Diggersby can serve as an effective Dynamax sweeper due to its immense immediate damage output and access to Speed manipulation via Max Airstream and Max Strike.

* When Dynamaxed, Bounce allows Diggersby to boost its Speed through Max Airstream, outspeeding positive Speed nature Dragapult following one boost if using a Jolly spread.

* Thunder Punch is Diggersby's way of dealing with Flying-types, in particular Corviknight, that can otherwise wall it. When Dynamaxed, Max Lightning also allows Diggersby to OHKO Dynamaxed Gyarados and beat bulky Water-types.

* Fire Punch can be opted in place of Thunder Punch, still being effective against Corviknight and additionally allowing Diggersby to OHKO Ferrothorn with Max Flare.

* Giga Impact can be used to provide an immense 150 Base Power Max Strike and is Diggersby's hardest-hitting attack.

* Life Orb is used to maximize power while Dynamaxed. Normal Gem is the item of choice instead when team compositions already have a Life Orb attacker, such as Diggersby's common partner, Mimikyu.

* Swords Dance can be used to boost Diggersby's Attack to astronomically high levels when matched up against passive foes, particularly those that try to beat Lum Berry Diggersby with status-inducing moves.

EV Spreads
==========

252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe with a Jolly nature: This is the spread of choice for Life Orb sweeper sets, sacrificing bulk investment to hit as hard and fast as possible.

116 HP / 252 Atk / 28 Def / 4 SpD / 108 Spe with an Adamant nature: This is the spread of choice for Lum Berry sets so Diggersby can outspeed up to positive-natured base 100 Speed Pokemon after a Max Airstream boost and unboosted Dragapult after two Max Airstreams.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: U-turn
move 3: Thunder Punch / Bounce
move 4: Body Slam / Bounce / Foul Play
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Huge Power
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Choice Scarf allows Diggersby to outspeed unboosted Dragapult without any boosts, helping it scout and serve as a potent revenge killer.

* U-turn lets Diggersby break Focus Sash and Disguise and to switch to more favorable matchups.

* Thunder Punch helps Diggersby beat Flying-types, like Gyarados and Togekiss.

* Bounce can be used to stall out Dynamax turns and also has the added bonus of boosting Speed while using Max Airstream. After Dynamax ends, Diggersby becomes faster than most Choice Scarf users at +1 Speed.

* Body Slam is an alternative STAB choice, dealing heavy neutral damage.

* Foul Play is potent at revenge killing Pokemon with boosted Attack, such as Belly Drum Snorlax, many Dragapult spreads, and Mimikyu at +2 Attack.

General Team Options
=================

Diggersby pairs well with Ghost-types due to the reciprocal immunities they receive from each other. It also appreciates the support of checks to bulky Water-types, which can give Diggersby trouble, particularly if not using Dynamax or Thunder Punch.

* Ghost-types: :mimikyu: :dragapult: :aegislash:

* Checks to Bulky Water-types: :ferrothorn: :dracozolt: :rotom-mow: :rotom-wash:

I would like to advocate for Foul Play as at least a mention on the Choice Scarf set.

I concede that targeting Dragapult with the move is not as strong of an argument since WispHex, DDance, LO are the more popular sets lately and you can no longer win the 1v1 (even if they Dynamax). It still is a great revenge kill / insurance option vs. sweepers that people tend to keep in the back like Mimikyu and BD Snorlax in addition to being a better revenge kill option vs Dragapult since sometimes you are just unable to get the chip damage necessary to guarantee that Earthquake can KO.

In the midgame, it gives you a way to capitalize on a predicted Max Phantasm from Dragapult or Mimikyu. Of course there are caveats here as well Mimikyu needs to have +2 for Foul Play to do more than Earthquake and Dragapult needs to not have an Airstream under its belt for you to win the exchange. You do live an unboosted Max Wyrmwind from Dragapult as well and Earthquake will not nab a 2HKO.

Finally, this is also not a great argument but most of the Nouthuca teams using Scarf Diggersby also favor Foul Play. Ultimately the move is pretty situational and ideally you never have to click moves 3 and 4 on the Scarf set.

I would probably also clarify that LO Fire Punch is not a guaranteed KO vs Ferrothorn.

Foul play added. I also realize with my Dynamax set I wasnt clear, but what I meant to say was that Max Flare was to be OHKOing Ferrothorn, not Fire Punch itself. Made it more clear now.

I think Normal Gem needs to be added to the Dynamax set and Giga Impact given more of an emphasis. Other than that this looks fine to me:

QC 1/2

Added a mention of normal gem to the Dynamax set for comps that already have a LO user, and made Giga Impact the move of choice over SD, pairing that with Life Orb and SD with Lum Berry.

My life still isn't "great" by any means at the moment, but its about time I start being productive again, so here's the final QC Check!

[SET]

move 3: Thunder Punch / Fire Punch
move 4: Rock Tomb / Swords Dance
item: Focus Sash

[SET COMMENTS]

* Diggersby equipped with a Focus Sash serves as an effective lead and revenge killer, dealing massive damage with Huge Power boosted STAB attacks and coverage options.

* Quick Attack is used to revenge kill opposing Focus Sash or very weakened Pokemon.

* Thunder Punch allows Diggersby to revenge kill Gyarados in particular, and is also useful coverage against the likes of Togekiss and Corviknight.

* Rock Tomb helps Diggersby slow down Max Airstream threats such as Togekiss, and also allows Diggersby to outspeed Cinderace Sucker Punch with Quick Attack. While it's sorta implied, I think it's worth mentioning that Rock Tomb + Quick Attack is going to KO Cinderace almost 100% of the time unless it Dynamaxes. Could maybe say that it gives it a favorable lead match-up vs Cinderace.

* Swords Dance can be opted for to boost its stats on predicted switch-outs or in order to secure a OHKO against slower Pokemon. This has the added benefit of boosting Quick Attack to help further chip incoming Pokemon.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Diggersby can serve as an effective Dynamax sweeper, due to its immense immediate damage output and access to Speed manipulation via Max Airstream and Max Strike.

* Bounce when Dynamaxed allows Diggersby to boost its speed through Max Airstream, outspeeding positive Speed nature Dragapult following one boost if using a maximum Speed spread. Very nitpicky, but I'd say "maximum speed with Jolly", just so no one uses Adamant and expects to outspeed :P

* Thunder Punch is Diggersby's way of dealing with Flying-types, in particular Corviknight, who can otherwise wall Diggersby. When Dynamaxed, Max Lightning also allows Diggersby to OHKO Dynamax Gyarados and beat bulky Water-types.

* Fire Punch can be opted in place of Thunder Punch, still being effective against Corviknight, and additionally allows Diggersby to OHKO Ferrothorn with Max Flare.

* Giga Impact can be used in place of Swords Dance to provide an immense 150 BP Max Strike, and is Diggersby's hardest hitting attack. Normal Gem can be used when team compositions already have a Life Orb attacker, such as its common partner, Mimikyu.

* Swords Dance can be used to boost Diggersby's Attack to astronomically high levels when matched up against passive foes, particularly those that try to beat Lum Berry Diggersby with status moves.
