In recent years, I had begun looking more at the lowlands than I was towards scandinavia. I was concerned with France having more armies than me, and with his proximity to the group of supply centers in the Balkans, France would have a faster path to 14~ SC than I would even if the italy/russia alliance disintegrated. My plan was to land 3 armies in the lowlands (stp build, berlin build, and convoy norway down when i was finished) and then see if i was in a position to stab. It would have been very nice to solo win, but it was harder for me when Italy didn't hold up vs france nearly as long as I thought they would be able to.

I think this early draw robbed France of a chance to work with Russia and attempt to solo win without me. I wonder if that was ever a plan that crossed your mind Aura Guardian ?

I saw mostly that Russia would crack and wasn't sure if I could crack Italy in time. I knew to watch out for a stab from England - especially now that we were winning, but when apricity was reluctant to disband HEL to let me get another army, that was a red flag, offset by plans to do the ENG bounce (these were both conversations from this year, not sent yet). The catch was how to defend without sacrificing my attack, and I'm glad that Italy appeared to be cracking in time for me to present a credible defense.

Though I really expected the stab to be with fleets, not armies.

As for a solo win: not yet; I felt that cracking the Russia/Italy alliance was too important. I probably would have thought about it in a couple years, once Italy was firmly dealt with.

Also, this wouldn't have gone nearly so well without the NMRs from Germany; we probably could have killed Germany, but the alliance would have gotten too strong for us to even stalemate.

True re Germany. I played pretty defensively when Germany was NMRing so I don’t feel like I would have lost anything major. But of course it allowed Austria to grab centers and force disbands which made our job easier

my thinking as to why I accepted the tie was that Russia would always pose some sort of resistance in Moscow and beyond. Whereas once Italy starts floundering, I think the Balkans follow quite quickly and I just don’t have armies to get there. So I didn’t think that I would be able to win solo and that in a few years you would get too strong for me to stab
