Cosmic power stored power or calm mind moonblast?

honestly it completely depends on your preference. they both have their pros and cons. if you're going to use stored power, make sure to have minimize.

I like CM Moonblast cause it allows clef to function throughout the game even when you dont have it set up to sweep right away. You can still batter things down like Dragonite with Moonblast if ever need be. I personally dont like the stored power sets just because they're so dedicated to only sweeping and have no immediate power.

The calm mind set with moon blast is also my favorite. I have Thunder Wave in there and it really helps against faster threats like Gengar, Alakazam, and Aerodactyl.

Maybe...though I'm not sure. Plus Stone Edge is more like an 80% chance to OHKO Zam cause of accuracy. Ice Fang also has quite a nit of use outside of Dugtrio, granted it won't OHKO many of its targets, several of which can OHKO back, but still. Nidoking/Queen, DNite(think it's a harder hit than Rock Slide. At the very least five more accuracy,) Golem, Rhydon, Venusaur, ummm...I think that's about it. So less use than the other moves, but not useless. And if I were to get rid of it I think I'd like Aqua a Tail for the 4x SE on Golem and Rhydon, higher damage on Nidos, and still KOing Dugtrio(well, 90% of the time.)

My question was more about Chansey, since the set I'm using isn't working. I think Chansey itself is ok, but the moves aren't. Maybe I could replace Counter w/ Seismic Toss and Aromatherapy w/ Swagger. Or I could add Taunt somewhere. Is Healing Wish a good move for it?

Is Stored Power/ Minimize/ Calm Mind/ Moonlight a good set for Clefable? Mine is Unaware with max physical bulk. I think I should maybe get rid of Calm Mind.

This is kinda fun.

You realise that Aero gets Earthquake, which hits all those things (apart from Dragonite, who you can still hit with Rock Slide / Stone Edge), right? Aero also gets Aerial Ace which hits the Grass-types harder thanks to STAB. Ice Fang literally only hits Dugtrio, so I don't think it's worth the moveslot.

Also get rid of Counter on Chansey please... If you aren't gonna use Toxic for damage then use Seismic Toss.

And yeah that's the Clef set I've been using and it's fantastic after you KO the opp's Tentacruel.

Not sure if making a thread for this is allowed here, so I'll make a Role Compendium for Kanto Classic :]

I can add on to the lists as we go on. I'm trying to avoid adding on Pokemon that simply are unviable and outclassed in certain roles such as "Agility Parasect" or w/e, so not all the users in Gen 1 will be listed.

I would add a section for Bulk Up users in the set-up sweeper category. Yeah, most of them are pretty slow, but we can use Trick Room, eh?

Out of curiosity, what does your team look like at the moment?

Also, because I'm a noob at this stuff, what order should I use the moves on the Clefable set you mentioned (Stored Power, Minimize, Calm Mind, Moonlight)? And what EVs/nature?

_______________________________________________________________________

Anyone got set suggestions for Aerodactyl/Alakazam/Nidoking?

Want to start making a team and use PS for the first time in preparation for the actual competition, just not too sure where to start with the team (besides Clefable, lol).

Would adamant or jolly dnite be good here? So far team is ARCANINE,Slowbro, and I'll train up a tentacruel? What nature and move set for him I was thinking calm with rapid spin and haze for sure. Then I'll need two more pokes

Hello michaelhale91 and welcome to smogon! Since youre new here I'm guessing you don't know about pokemon showdown. It is basically a simulator which let's you battle mons online. So before breeding for a team most of us practice there and after we are satisfied with our teams we breed for them on cart. This saves a ton of time and effort so I recommend you try it out immediately. As for Dragonite, jolly is better Imo because it let's you outspeed jolteon and aerodactyl after a dragon dance which is huge as they are both threats to Dragonite as the former carries hidden power ice and the latter has a stab stone edge.

Pretty much this. Jolly also lets you either speed tie opposing Jolly Dragonite or flat out outspeed Adamant variants.

That being said, Adamant is still not a bad option if you're looking for more power. Adamant Iron Head is capable of a guaranteed 2HKO vs phys def Clefable after Stealth Rock:

252+ Atk Dragonite Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 90-108 (44.5 - 53.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Dragonite Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 82-98 (40.5 - 48.5%) -- 66.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Yeah I did a few battles in showdown I feel I need a ice move my first battle a dragonite with drago tail and thunder wave stomped me!! I'll probably need a rock type because I went with Persian and gengar and that didn't work too well for that battle but that team did very well the 2nd battle. Hmmm and tentacruel I need a decent spread and move set idk I feel I need some ice moves for zapdos or rocks or something

So I'm still messing around and looking for two mons to fill my roster. I've experimented and I'm sticking with the following 4:

Persian- fastest fake out in the west
Jolteon- speedy special glass cannon (been my favorite mon of all time since RBY days)
Tentacruel- antisweeper/ anticlefable/ spinner
Clefable- CM/ moonblast/ twave set

Thinking about aerodactyl for SR/ Taunt/ Roar shenanigans. And can't decide on a 6th mon to save my life.

Aerodacty would definitely be good, though Roar would be a horrible idea on it. Lots of people use Alakazam, other things you see a lot are Chansey, Alakazam, Dragonite, and Gyarados. Any of those could be your sixth, though Gyara gives you a bit of an electric weakness despite having Jolteon.

Dugtrio
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Memento
- Fissure

Loving Dugtrio at the moment as a way to trap and stop nearly everything that stops Clefable apart from Weezing. Memento is to stop things that come in and try to set up on Dugtrio like Dragonite and Fissure is a way to kill Machamp.

Alright so Aerodactyl has found a place in my heart. I want to run Zam but have never used him before. Nature? Spread? I imagine Magic Guard and then I was thinking Sub/ Encore/ Disable/ Psyshock

Timid I think, max Spe and SpA. I run Psychic and Calm Mind over Disable and Encore, but it's probably fine either way.

I only got around to making a team when the ladder was first put up, and it pretty much just took advantage of Clefable hype before people started running Tentacruel a lot, so it's pretty outdated now but I went for about 10-0 to start out. I jumped on yesterday and had trouble with it now that everyone has clued on to the antics lol.

It was mini-CM Clef / Magneton / mixedking / disruptor Zam / CM Slowbro / Snorlax

I think it served as a good starting point, and I have a few cool ideas to fix it up so I don't lose to Tentacruel so hard!

I would usually use Minimize first with Clef as not much can 2HKO it, then stall for a miss with Moonlight before trying to Calm Mind. If the opp doesn't have any threatening physical hitters then go for a CM first if you want. Then it's just a matter of racking up the boosts before going on a Stored Power sweep. You can't just mindlessly send in Clef and hax your way to victory though, bringing it in on a paralysed foe or against a special attacker like Starmie etc really helps ease the set up.

Pardon the long post.
I know this took a while to produce, but...what exactly...are we supposed to do with this list of Pokemon? Surely, none of them in their current forms are viable for competitive play.

If you want "perfect" Pokemon, you have to IV breed. There are plenty of tutorials on how to breed for 5 IV Pokemon with good natures. We can't necessarily build a team for you. You'll have to do that on your own. Reference the Role Compendium I made in page 4 of this thread. That should help you in choosing viable Pokemon for your team.

OHKO moves are great in this format. If you havent tried them yet i'd recommend giving them a shot. Great way to deal with clefable and other tough to break down walls. Pretty decent option on some predicted switches as well. This meta can be pretty passive at times so you can manage to get a good number of tries to hit. And theres some pretty viable mons that get ohko moves like snorlax, rhydon, articuno. Snorlax and Rhydon mostly use them as a backup option while Articuno can potentially use it as its main weapon with a subroost set. So yeah, if you find your teams often losing to clef or stall, try out some OHKO moves.

Pardon the long post.

Please don't go looking for just random Pokemon you caught during your playthrough that are eligible. I hate to say it but if you are serious about competing then you need to learn how to breed for good IVs and at the very least the correct natures! Every other person you fight online does it so by not doing it you're putting yourself at a massive disadvantage. There are guides literally all over Smogon that will help you so I won't link any here. For starters though, check out my Helpful Links thread, get yourself a Ditto from one of the links there, find the Destiny Knot and Everstone in-game, and breed yourself some competitive Pokemon!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me. Just don't clog this thread with enquiries though n_n

Some of those that I listed (the lv 1 ones) are ones that I bred. Most I've beaten in a team are 3 Pokemon. With the best I have.

Thanks for the offer.

Nothing really. It was just a general thing.

I've IV bred before. But it is a hassle. Best I've gotten via a 6 iv Ditto I have is 3 iv stuff for the most part.

Thanks.

The biggest thing that I've learned from the matches I've had so far is that, very simply, a team needs to be built to overcome Clefable. I tried a number of different things, but the two I'm currently running with on my team are Chansey, Calm with 146 EVs in SpDef, which guarantees a minimum three hits from a +6 Clefable's Moonblast, and also a Specially Defensive Arcanine that can resist Moonblast and roar away an evasion boosted Clefable. For my own Clefable (because every team needs one, right?) I find that Unaware is definitely the preferred ability, as there's a lot of setup sweeping popular in the evolving meta so far. Haven't played a ton of games or anything (18-3 atm), but I'm definitely having some fun with the old Gen 1 crew.

Edit: Something I just realized, too, but Body Slam never misses Minimized targets. Snorlax crushes those Clefables, too.
