Double Battle Metagame.

So, I was playing PBR online last night and was totally raped by a crazy, ingenious team.
It was an all normal-type team with a Smeargle, two Purugly, and three others that I can't think of. From what I saw, the entire team was running only three different moves: Detect, Assist, and Explosion. Smeargle (who I assumed was up to no good so I attacked first) used Detect and its partner used Assist, which ended up being a STAB'd Explosion. It destroyed my leads. And then the next Pokemon the opponent sent out used the same tactic. I was in disbelief when it was over...I never saw it coming...

Two of my YouTube videos demonstrating the team this guy is talking about. As a note, that first link is one of the greatest pokemon battles ever recorded.

I'm pretty sure the reason this team works is probably because the Normal-types are all Choice Scarf with Assist as their sole move, so they'll always pick one of Smeargle's moves.

I'd be so scared using that team, since a single Ghost type would screw things up for me.

I'm reworking my old Trick Room team, which probably means I'll just be changing up how the leads work; I was using a Lickilicky/Dusknoir combo that I read about in this very thread, just because I really like Lickilicky. When it worked, it was great, but it was a struggle if the other guy was able to stop Dusknoir, which happens a lot.

Currently, Lickilicky does all the offensive heavy lifting, while Dusknoir provides support. If I use Clefable, that might switch around, or at least be more evenly distributed between the two partners. A Helping Hand Shadow Sneak could punch holes in all those other ghosts people use, and Follow Me is always good to have.

Plus, the other big problem with the team is that all four members are physical pokemon, so some special attackers could help a bit.

Desperatly need advice on how good this team is?

Bronzong @ Occa
Sassy
252 hp/100 def/100 Sp.def/58 att.
~Trick Room
~Gyro ball
~Explosion
~Reflect/Light Screen/imprison

Hariyama @ Toxic Orb
Brave
252 att/128 def/130 sp.def
~Fake out
~Rock Slide
~Facade
~Close Combat

Dusknoir @ Leftovers
Brave
No idea??
~Protect
~Shadow Sneak
~Wow
~Pain Split

Metagross @ Life Orb
252 hp/252 att/6 def
~Bullet punch
~Earthquake
~Explosion
~Meter Mash/Protect/Iron head

Basic strat is to get TR down, switch in noir while zong goes boom. Then send in metagorss and go boom while noir picks of any sashers with shadow sneak.
Or zong provides support while hariyama sweeps.
I really think there are many ways to use this team and would like suggestions and comments?

You are too reliant on Explosion, a good Politoed would take you down.
A STAB Close Combat kos politoed!
But your probably right,Maybe noir can burn him and just stall from there?
I dont know if he will be that much of a problem!

if dusknoir isn't setting up trick room or pysching up boosts, he is very weak, you want to be doing as much damage as possible for your limited trick room turns

I think that's the thing that I hate about Trick Room. I would love to use it, but turns are wasted on Protect/Detect opponents. Unless, of course, you had a Dusknoir with Imprison and Protect. :p
But that takes up a lot of room that could be used for more potent moves.

I just wish it was easier to get Helping Hand on Dusknoir.

Also, my original team also was really Explosion-centric, which I solved by giving Lickilicky Power Whip. It worked for Quagsire, who I saw much more of than Politoed, but I don't know if you'd be able to do the same thing, as the closest thing you have is Grass Knot on Bronzong, which is only a 60 power move against Politoed, who has very good HP and Special Defense.

'Double HAX'

Togekiss @ Choice Scarf
Modest
4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spe
-Air Slash
-Aura Sphere
-Fire Blast
-Hidden Power Ice / Grass Knot

Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Adamant
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
-Iron Head
-Trick
-Body Slam / U-Turn / Ice Punch / Zen Headbutt
-Zen Headbutt / U-Turn / Ice Punch / Body Slam

Hax your opponent to death.Works better if you have paralysis support beforehand.Annoys people to death with the wonderful hax ability of Rachi and Kiss.

For Togekiss,Air Slash is obviously the hax move, while the others are for more coverage.Aura Sphere helps you against Rock and Steel- types who resist.Fire Blast helps against Ice- types.Hidden Power Ice,meanwhile, helps you with Salamence,Flygon,Dragonite or other dragons, but Grass Knot helps you against Swampert.

For Jirachi,Iron Head is obviously the hax move, while the others are just filler, since Iron Head decimates everything, excluding Empoleon and Heatran, and Trick cripples SubPetaya Empoleon, when it Agilities, crippling it for the rest of the match.Of course,it helps against Blissey too.The last two moves really depend on the type of coverage your team needs. You can alter the four moves I suggested, because they give the most coverage.Other good options include Fire Punch(the only one I can think of).

Double SubSeed

Shaymin @ Leftovers/Big Root
Bold
4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
-Substitute
-Leech Seed
-Air Slash
-Protect

Celebi @ Leftovers/Big Root
Bold
4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
-Substitute
-Leech Seed
-Hidden Power Fire / Hidden Power Electric
-Recover / Protect

Double Subseed.Really annoys the hell out of people who have no patience.
And how does this set work about?Very simple, though works better if you had made the opponent's pokemon sleep beforehand. On Turn one,you simply Substitute and act accordingly afterwards.
Leech Seed on a non-grass type,or Air Slash on a grass type with Shaymin. The other two moves explain themselves.
As for Celebi,Sub + Leech Seed are obvious.Third slot,is abit hard to choose.HP Fire helps you with Scizor and the Grass types, and HP Electric helps you with Gyarados.Feel free to alter the EVs to suit your needs,e.g. OHKOing Scizor.Last slot really depends on whether you want Celebi to survive longer,or scout with Protect.

Psych Up

Clefable @ Toxic Orb
Magic Gaurd(FIXED ABILITY)
Bold
252 HP / 252 Def / 4SDef or 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
-Cosmic Power
-Belly Drum / Follow Me
-Facade
-Softboiled

Slowbro/King @ Leftovers
Bold/Careful/Impish/Calm(Careful and Calm for King,Bold and Impish for Bro)
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef or 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef or 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
-Toxic
-Psych Up
-Slack Off
-Aqua Tail/Zen Headbutt/Ice Punch/Earthquake/Body Slam/Return

This duo allows you to use Slowbro/King to stall with their excellent defense in UU.The moveset is really self-explanatory.
Clefable setsup, while Bro/King Psych Ups and annoys with Toxic + Slack Off.This works like SubRoost Articuno and StallRein, but better. The last move is up to your choice,if you use physical,or the special options of these moves if you use special. If you use Belly Drum on Clefable, those options are probably the ones you should go with, though Earthquake is the best.It helps you handle poison and steel types who resist Toxic, though Weezing still walls you.

How to get 300-1000 Attack on any pokemon in 1 turn:

Medicham
Pure Power
Focus Sash / Leftovers
128 Def / 128 SpD / 252 Hp

Protect
Seismic Toss
Recover / Detect
Helping Hand / Light Screen / Fake Out

Medicham's job is just to survive the first turn.

Pick a pokemon which learns Skill Swap. On the first turn, swap with Medicham. The pokemon that gains this skill gets 2x their attack stat.

<Notable Pokemon That Learns Skill Swap with Max Nature'd Attack>
Allakhazam - 218 x 2 = 436 Attack
Azelf - 383 x 2 = 700~ Attack
Banette - 361 x 2 = 650~ Attack
Blissey - 130 x 2 = 260 Attack
Bronzong - 304 x 2 = 608 Attack
Butterfree - 207 x 2 = 414 Attack
Celebi - 328 x 2 = 650~ Attack
Deoxys - 438 x 2 = 900~ Attack
Deoxys-A - 504 x 2 = 1008 Attack
Deoxys-D - 262 x 2 = 500~ Attack
Deoxys-S - 317 x 2 = 600~ Attack
Drifblim - 284 x 2 = 600~ Attack
Dusknoir - 328 x 2 = 650 Attack
Exeguttor - 317 x 2 = 600~ Attack
Jirachi - 328 x 2 = 650~ Attack
Gallade - 383 x 2 = 800~ Attack

I was going to list them all, but the basic idea is to take a pokemon and either give its mediocre attack power a significant boost, or to take a pokemon heavy in attack power and make it insanely destructive. Medicham becomes a useless support pokemon, but if you can get a Deoxys with 1000 normal attack power... you could extreme speed everything into oblivion. A Butterfree with 400 attack power is pretty scary. Give em' a life orb and some speed and you can make almost any pokemon a physical sweeper.

I've tested this with Gallade and it works, you can skill swap an ally and it will function perfectly. I haven't tried skill swapping with Medicham protecting, however, so you may want to replace that skill with Fake Out or Helping Hand if he doesn't already have that. Protect / Detect are excellent for stalling though.

I haven't tested this, but you could also switch Medicham out after Skill Swapping, then you could Skill Swap AGAIN and give a pokemon that can't learn Skill Swap Pure Power (like Tyranitar or Aerodactyl), it would take longer to set up, but could be even more devastating.

*After consulting with my brother I suppose I'll have to test this again. Although I did test Medicham/Gallade it was a while ago, I still do believe you can skill swap an ally, but I'll test it again to make sure.

Torkoal
Leftovers
White Smoke
252 Def / 200 Hp / 52 SpD
Amnesia
Sleep Talk / Rapid Spin / Stealth Rock
Rest
Lava Plume

You could drop the EV in SpD for some SpA or Hp however it's imperative that Torkoal survive a few turns with his base SpD stat.

Combined with:
A Pokemon that learns Flash Fire such as:

Heatran
Flash Fire
Choice Scarf / Life Orb
4 Hp / 252 SpA / 252 Speed

Earth Power
Heat Wave
Explosion
HP Ice / Fire Blast

The idea here is for Torkoal to Lava Plume with a Flash Fire pokemon out. It will hit both opposing pokemon and your ally, giving them 50% more power to fire attacks. Pretty basic, so it works with any build. Heatran is the standard CS Heatran except I reccomend having Fire Blast AND Heat Wave because while Heatwave is preferable in doubles, Fire Blast with its added power could OHKO things that Heatwave will not. You're going for fire attacks anyway, the other moves are just for double weaknesses.

Pokemon with good speed base are probably better with this strategy, such as Rapidash (who can Hypnosis) or Arcanine or Hounddoom (who can Nasty Plot). If you're going to use this stat, I'd recommend trying a fire monotype team for doubles – discovering that Lava Plume hits your ally inspired me to do just that.

This same strategy has been done with Toxicroak (Water Absorb and Surf) but it can also be replicated with Volt Absorb (Discharge from Zapdos or a utility pokemon like Electrode who has low SpA – the purpose of Discharge and Lava Plume is not to deal damage, but to heal the sweeper pokemon 25% hp each turn while burning/paralyzing the opponent [Discharge/Lava Plume have high chances of Paralyze/Burn]) and Electavire's Motor Ability [which gives him +1 Speed when hit by lightning].

Bronzong
Levitate
252 Hp / 80 Def / 92 SpD / 86 Attack

Trick Room
Safeguard
Swagger
Gyro Ball / Explosion / Hypnosis

+

Marowak
Rock Head / Lightning Rod
Thick Club
252 Hp / 252 Attack / 4 Def

Earthquake
Fire Punch
Swords Dance / Double Edge
Thunder Punch / Rock Slide

There are two ways to play this: Safeguard on the first turn (to prevent sleep), then Trick Room, then Safeguard, then Swagger Marowak (he will not be confused because of Safeguard) or you can Trick Room, then Safeguard, then Swagger Marowak. Basically, it makes Bronzong into a utility stat raiser, ideal for a trick room team. You don't have to waste precious turns swords dancing! Though you can, swiftly raising your attack and flinching with rockslide or double OHKO'ing with Earthquake.

You can Skill Swap an ally. However, Skill Swapping either Pure Power or Huge Power only gives a x1.5 boost. Thus, all your Math is wrong. Physical Alakazam is stupid. The only pokemon this is worthwhile for is Gallade.

If you have Torkoal and Heatran out, won't a turn 1 Earthquake KO both of them? Toxicroak+Surf and Jolteon/Electivire+Discharge are OK though.

*cough*no pokemon to prevent Taunt*cough*. Otherwise, good strategy, and I've seen it before in the Seattle VGC 2009.

You can Skill Swap an ally. However, Skill Swapping either Pure Power or Huge Power only gives a x1.5 boost. Thus, all your Math is wrong. Physical Alakazam is stupid. The only pokemon this is worthwhile for is Gallade.

Thanks for the clarification.

And is it stupid? I mean, yes Allakhazam is a SpAttacker, but he does have a decent physical move pool if I recall.

However if the stat gain is only 1.5 then it's not very practical for 'zam. And from a Uber's perspective, I'd say Deoxys is worth it, though it might be a little bit of overkill.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.5x boost is wrong, it still gives a 2x boost, that said it still doesn't seem like a very worthwhile strategy as you could use a Pokemon with swords dance to achieve essentially the same effect without having to neuter your medicham.

Hmm, I suppose you're right. Though, for the record, not all of those pokemon can learn swords dance, plus it can work in conjunction with a swords dance (though if you really are able to get 3 swords dance off and a skill swap you basically won anyway, the other player isn't even trying). But I guess the idea isn't so ingenious after all.

I'm thinking of SRing for one of those XD Electabuzzesessess...? Yeah. I want one as a Follow Me poke for a quirky RD team.

Electavire (sash)
??? Nature
Best IVs I can SR for before getting bored
Follow Me/Ice Punch/Rock Slide (ha why not! XD)/and either Thunder Punch or Thunder.

Vire uses FM to re-direct FOs, and Tnts, and Dragon Pulses while Kingdra RDs and then sweeps. Also, if he lives I can switch him out for maybe Vaporeon and then switch him back in if I suspect an electric attack (it is a water team) to get the speed boost.

Again, I'm just trying to be different. I don't know that Vire is better than Ludicollo, but I have been using a Crobat on a SD team and I have had several noobs try to FO my Crobat while Crobat takes it and then Taunts their Kingdra. Just feel like trying something different.

My question is....which is better, Thunder or Thunder Punch? Thunder has 100% accuracy in the rain and a 30% chance to paralyze, but Thunder Punch uses his already higher Atack stat, so I'm sure it will do more actual damage, though either gets STAB. Which is better, 30% chance for paralysis, or using the Atack rather than the SAtk stat? Remember, I'm just trying to shy away from the Bog Standard Ludicollo.

Thanks! ^.6

Just a crazy Idea I had today. It's just in nugget form, but it sounds fun to try. How would this fare as a lead combo? I really want to try it just for fun! :D

Max Spd Mr Mime, Filter (Sash)
Teeter Dance, Psychic, Helping Hand, Protect

Max Spd Smeargle, Own Tempo, (Scarf)
DV, whatever, whatever, Explosion...

Basically I was just bringing up the idea of a scarfed DV+Teeter Dance Lead to double hax your opponent in the 1st turn. Metalkid's says Smeargle can get up to 139 spd and with a scarf that puts him at 208 which beats crobat/aero. A timid Mr. Mime can get up to 156 too. While that's not technically "blindingly fast" it beats a lot of stuff.

2 status pokemon might tend to make your team too frail overall possibly. And faking out, or Mach Punching the Smearlgle would be obvious.

Just a silly/fun thought. What do y'all think?

A combo of me:

Magmortar
Fire Punch / Flare Blitz
Rock Slide / Cross Chop
Follow Me
Rest

Cherrim
Sunny Day
Worry Seed
Helping Hand
SolarBeam / Protect

A combo I just saw in the PBR game today:

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Jolly (should be)
252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 Def
-Dark Void
-Substitute
-Teeter Dance
-Baton Pass

and..

Wobuffet(it isn't uber there,sad): @ Leftovers
Random Nature,should be Bold/Impish/Calm/Careful
Standard Wobbufet set
-Charm
-Encore
-Mirror Coat
-Counter

He used it like this:

-Smeargle Dark Voids the opponent turn 1(surviving due to the Focus Sash),
-He Teeter Dance the next turn if possible;
-He sets up a Substitute,
-and Baton Pass, whilst Wobuffet Charms all the opponents to drop their attack to -6,
-encoring any stat up moves(I used Dragon Dance once with my Mence),
-and Mirror Coating any Special moves / Countering any physical moves.

Another nice, effective combo I have seen:

Medicham @ Life Orb
Adamant,should be.
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SDef <-- this is what I will use,since Bulk Up adds Defense.
-Bulk Up
-Brick Break
-Recover ( he ran Recover, but I will run Psycho Cut for more coverage )
-Thunder Punch

Togekiss @ Leftovers
Random,most likely Bold.
Standard MOST Physically bulked up Togekiss
-Follow Me
-Roost
-Thunder Wave
-Air Slash

He uses Medicham to boost up its already high 460+ attack with Bulk Up + Follow Me.He paralyzes after Cham reaches about +3 Attack and Defense and he sweeps and healing in the process. His Cham OHKOed by Bold Nature,252 HP 252 Def Dragonite(meant to be Defensive) at 75% with Thunder Punch after some specific boosts(I guess +4 or +5 or so).He keeps repeating till Togekiss dies. His next two pokemon were the simple ExplosionGhost combination(CBAzelf and Gengar, since his Azelf could deal >70% to my Metagross with Explosion).

Another nice combo I have seen..

Lopunny @ Life Orb
Klutz
standard
standard
-Switcheroo
-Healing Wish
-Encore
-Return

Snorlax @ Sitrus Berry
Adamant MOST PROBABLY
EVs to ensure that his Lax got healed after one Belly Drum + SR + two layers of Spikes(That was what I set up).
x amount of HP EVs / 252 Atk / rem into Def
-Belly Drum
-Earthquake
-Ice Punch
-Return

He sets up a Belly Drum with Snorlax while I set up my SR + Spikes. Then his Lopunny passes the LO over and his Sitrus activates.I guess he ran the moves for perfect coverage + STAB and I lost hands down 4-0 to him.I had Metagross,Foretress,Salamence and Mewtwo, who all got OHKOed by a +6 EQ and Ice Punch.Amazingly,I did some damage calculations, and it showed that Snorlax's Life Orbed moves does:

252hp/252 def +def nature METAGROSS:

1400 Atk vs 394 Def & 364 HP (102 Base Power): 252 - 297 (69.23% - 81.59%) with Return,

1400 Atk vs 394 Def & 364 HP (100 Base Power): 662 - 780 (181.87% - 214.29%)with Earthquake,

1400 Atk vs 394 Def & 364 HP (75 Base Power): 124 - 146 (34.07% - 40.11%) with Ice Punch,

I DONT RUN EXPLOSION ON MY GROSS BTW ( SADLY I SHOULD HAVE ) ! I run HP Fire / Bullet Punch / SR / Psychic . Yes MixGross.

252hp / 252 def +def natureSalamence:

+6-1 attack Ice Punch : 1225 Atk vs 394 Def & 284 HP (75 Base Power): 868 - 1024 (305.63% - 360.56%)

+6-1 attack Return : 1225 Atk vs 394 Def & 284 HP (102 Base Power): 442 - 522 (155.63% - 183.80%)

252 hp / 252 def +def nature Forretress:

+6 Attack Earthquake : 1400 Atk vs 416 Def & 354 HP (100 Base Power): 313 - 369 (88.42% - 104.24%),but I run 252 hp / 4 def / 252 sdef :(,so it is a straight OHKO.

The other two dont OHKO though.

252def/252hp +Def natureMewtwo:

+6 Atk EQ : 1400 Atk vs 306 Def & 416 HP (100 Base Power): 425 - 501 (102.16% - 120.43%)

+6 Atk Return :1400 Atk vs 306 Def & 416 HP (102 Base Power): 652 - 768 (156.73% - 184.62%)

Ice Punch does lesser than EQ,obviously not OHKOing.

Machamp would ruun this set better, try him!

Hey guys, I was thinking about legends. so I threw this set together, keep in mind its not perfect, so it'll really need some good points, but for the most part I think it could do pretty well.

Kyogre @ Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest
EV's: 252 SpA / 252 Spd(?) / 6 HP(?) <- Probably needs better EV's.
~ Water Spout
~ Thunder
~ Hydro Pump
~ Ice Beam

- Well the Kyogre set is pretty simple, Water Spout and Choice Scarf allow for a quick strike and hopefully a double KO.

Blissey @ Chesto Berry
Nature: Bold
EV's: 252 HP / 156 SpD / 100 SpA
Ability: Serene Grace
~ Aromatherapy
~ Helping Hand
~ Thunder
~ Protect(?)

Blissey would provide excellent use for the Special Sweepers and against Darkrai, for example, if you opponent sent out Darkria, chances are there's going to be a Dark Void, so Blissey can wake up and use Aromatherapy to cure Kyogre if it also gets put to sleep. Helping Hand is there to help give Kyogre that boost that it doesn't get from Life Orb or Specs. Thunder is there for Rain and Paralyze (Serene Grace helps too). And the final move is where I didn't really know where to go with it, so a move suggestion would be perfect!

Others in the team:

I didn't really know who else to put in though. The team strongly focus' on the first two working well together. Something to help Blissey's weaknesses would be nice, but again, I don't know where to focus on, maybe Metagross would work, I haven't got that far!

But please comment on what I have posted on the team, and please try to help me make it better!
