Viability Rankings
Tier One:

Pokemon that dominate a large portion of the metagame for their typing. They are either quite powerful or offer great team support, and can fit on almost any team. You can't really go wrong by using these Pokemon.
Tier Two:
Pokemon that are generally strong and can easily be placed on a variety of teams, but don't have the same level of prowess as the threats in Tier 1.
Tier Three:
Pokemon that are generally strong, but less powerful than those in Tier 2 or Pokemon that require a decent amount of support or a specific team style to function well, but are defining pieces to said archetypes.
Tier Four:
This tier contains either Pokemon that have broad applications on a variety of teams, but are simply less effective than those in higher tiers, or are only particularly useful for certain team styles.

Sort of felt relevant, so I am reposting ND Doubles Monotype teams down below.

ND DOUBLES MONOTYPE SAMPLE TEAMS

The purpose of this post is to give new players an easy access to teams and compete in roomtours. There are couple of things to note, though. Not all types are equally viable. Some monotype teams have plenty of tools in which will help them succeed in a Doubles metagame. Some are not as fortunate. Also, ND Monotype Doubles is not an official smogon metagame, so you will have to use the code provided below to enforce the rules for a roomtour. As more games are played, teams may come off or be added to the list. If you would like to contribute to the list, please message me through Discord (although you may do so on Smogon as well). Without further ado ~

  1. /tour new gen9nationaldexdoubles, elimination
  2. /tour rules same type clause, terastal clause
  3. /tour autostart 15
  4. /tour name [Gen 9] National Dex Monotype Doubles

Sadly, I'm out of the tour. I still like monotype doubles and will stick around to contribute to the metagame. I worked on several teams, some of which may look similar but may function differently. Ping me whenever I'm around PS or Discord. I'm dying for some games.

Early metagame thoughts:

In monotype, not all types are equally viable. Some types have the advantage of field effects such as Weather or Terrain. As far as I'm concerned, field effect extending items aren't much of a concern. Setters such as Pincurchin and Ninetales would most likely use an item to remove themselves from the field so that 1) a more offensive mon can wreck havoc and 2) have more chances to set the weather in case of a terrain / weather war. Some types may also have better support whether that be through Fake Out, Redirection, or Speed Control. Note that I don't see the support moves ever being banned. Rather, I think the mon that is too good of a support is the one that should be banned.

Now, lets talk about what is actually already banned and should be banned asap. I noticed that we have already banned Sand Veil and Snow Cloak. I can only assume that this was done so due to the Evasion Abilities Clause, or the current council wanted to create a more competitively "fair" metagame. I'm leaning more towards the former, but if it is the latter, then we might as well remove all the "luck-based" items (King's Rock, Razor Fang, Bright Powder, Focus Band, and Quick Claw) that some of the other monotype metagames have already done. As a mainly Doubles player, I must admit that this route does seem absurd to me.

In the case of mons to ban, I think Urshifu should be banned immediately. First off, Urshifu is by definition a mon that breaks the fundamentals of doubles metagames. If you want to use Protect or switch out to another mon, then think again. Unfortunately, not every team can have a Bolt or one of these Grass types (Ogerpon-W, Amoonguss, or Sinistcha). What about Flutter Mane? It has been banned in SV Doubles and is very controversial in ND Doubles. In a neutral matchup, it can easily do enough damage to basically determine the outcome of a match. In my opinion, the metagame will have to revolve around Flutter Mane. It has perfect coverage, amazing stats, and versatile sets.

Finally, we come down to Expanding Force and Coaching. You may think the current metagame's best psychic terrain abusers would need some kind of speed advantage to spam expanding force. However, I can imagine that in a neutral matchup (not against steel or dark), you could just switch out Indeedee-F via Eject button and have two very fast mons (Ex. Iron Crown w/ Booster Energy + Sash Deoxys / Scarf mon) spamming expanding force at the same time. Unless you have Wide Guard, winning that matchup could be very difficult. I am leaning towards banning expanding force. In concerns to coaching, I don't think it warrants any action at the moment. Majority of the types seem to have a good mix of physical and special attackers. In my experience, all mons that abused coaching way too well actually got themselves banned, so I say ban the abusers instead of the move itself.

Post-MOMPL Teamdump

Figured I'd post the teams I built this tour, as we are likely to see some tiering changes coming in the near future after survey results come out. I had a massive pricetag this tour and I was not very happy with my record, but that's just monotype sometimes.

:roaring moon: :kingambit: :grimmsnarl: :chi yu: :ting lu: :chien pao:
Decided to go with dark for week 1, coming into the tour I thought it was going to be the most broken typing but I was very wrong. Despite Dark having all the tools it needs to be good, and a lot of top meta threats, it's very difficult to make a cohesive 6. Unfortunately loaded into rain webs water, which meant half of my team was useless and my only real way to break was kingambit which didn't turn out too well.

:grimmsnarl: :tinkaton: :flutter mane: :azumarill: :iron valiant: :diancie:
After week 1, I kinda figured out that Fairy balance is like the most broken archetype in the format so decided to build it out. Nothing too crazy on this build, earth power diancie is for the steel and ghost matchup because this team struggles heavily with Gholdengo.

:ninetales-alola: :tinkaton: :flutter mane: :diancie: :clefairy: :primarina:
Fairy version 2 for semis TB, unfortunately loaded into steel which was the one type I did not want to see. CM prim has the ability do win that matchup, but unfortunately I got max 3 turn slept and crit so didn't end up working out. I really liked this variant though, and I think it's a solid team.

:indeedee-f: :iron crown: :hatterene: :gallade: :mew: :bronzong:
Probably my favorite team of the tour, IDBP heatproof zong is a really good tool on psychic because you fry the dark matchup, and you also patch up psychic's weakness to fire which is an extremely difficult matchup because it gets overwhelmed by chi yu.

:ninetales-alola: :chien-pao: :kyurem: :iron bundle: :cetitan: :baxcalibur:
Was feeling really unmotivated in the builder so went with ice one of the weeks, team is like okay and not optimized. I don't think ice is very good.

I'll also post some of my doubles teams from the tour, I think this tier is pretty fun and I enjoyed playing it but it's more subjected to random matchup losses that happened quite a lot this tournament compared to other mono tiers.

:sneasler: :scrafty: :iron hands: :urshifu-rapid-strike: :keldeo: :zapdos-galar:
Week 1 I brought this team, still probably my favorite team I built this whole tour, unfortunately it loses to what everyone found were the top types later in the tour, but the gimmick is really cool imo, didn't quite work out in the game though, I didn't expect the scarf chi-yu which just ruined my sweep plans.
:Hatterene: :Whimsicott: :Enamorus: :Diancie: :Primarina: :Flutter Mane:
Through some testing week 2 I kinda figured Fairy was just the most broken type in the tier, Flutter Mane should probably be banned, and I almost wish I just loaded Fairy every week tbh. This version has enam who kinda sucks but helps band-aid the steel mu but it's probably more worth to accept that as an auto-loss and pray your opponent doesn't bring it because steel sucks against the majority of the other types.
:Flutter Mane: :Gholdengo: :Sinistcha: :Basculegion-F: :Drifblim: :Dragapult:
This is a sick team I was going to bring week 3, unfortunately it performed very bad in testing but the idea is suicide lead drifblim leading into a sweep attempt with FM/Ghold, along with imprison sinistcha for trick room teams.
:Mew: :Indeedee_F: :Iron Crown: :Gallade: :Latios: :Armarouge:
This is the actual team that I brought which led to my favorite game of the tournament. There were a few super cool games that happened, and unfortunately a decent amount of unwinnable matchup stomps. I tried bringing a variant of this team with mixed speed and Hatt and Rabsca week 5 which did well in tests, but got obliterated by ada Gouger.

There are a few other cool teams I built that I never ended up bringing:
:Florges: :Flutter Mane: :Whimsicott: :Enamorus: :Tinkaton: :Primarina:
This is a more offensive take on a fairy team, Specs flutter mane with a speed boost with helping hand support seemed pretty good to me.
:Tyranitar: :Diancie: :Glimmora: :Ogerpon-Cornerstone: :Arcanine-Hisui: :Probopass:
I actually think outside of the main 5 all of the other pokemon to me looked like frauds who don't actually help with any other matchups, they're just kin of win-more but Probopass can do some funny stuff. Unlike normal monotype, Rock is actually a decently viable type.
:Rillaboom: :Ogerpon-Cornerstone: :Amoonguss: :Whimsicott: :Meowscarada: :Torterra:
One of Grass's few advantages is it actually has a decent matchup into Fairy, and I'd say is not horrible other than just a general lack of power that, like most types, means it loses to around half of the existing types.

Shoutout qtfox for helping me test throughout the tournament, unfortunate that you couldn't win your doubles game but I might've very well gone 0-X without someone solid to test with. Also shoutout the Mono Doubles council, the resources here helped me a lot with teambuilding and just getting acclimated to the tier. Hope to see some more tournaments of some sort with this tier!
