Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 80 HP / 176 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
Gengar's terrible defensive stats are compensated by its good defensive typing and useful ability, which give it immunity to key moves like Rapid Spin, Close Combat, and Earthquake. Will-O-Wisp lets it spread burns and allows it to get past Pokemon like specially defensive Jirachi and Skarmory, defensive Bronzong and Zapdos, and turn the tide against physical attackers like offensive Swampert, Swords Dance Scizor, and Trick Room Bronzong. Knock Off permanently cripples foes by removing their items, which is especially helpful against Clefable and other defensive Pokemon. Shadow Ball and Focus Blast provide perfect coverage and let it offensively threaten anything with at least neutral damage. Because of its ability to remove Leftovers and apply burns, capitalizing on residual damage is the best way to use this set. Sandstorm, entry hazards, and Protect or Substitute users pair well with Knock Off. Jirachi is a notable partner, as it becomes a nightmare to deal with once foes like Heatran, Clefable, and Zapdos lose their Leftovers, thanks to its ability to flinch them down with Iron Head. Gengar's Ghost typing can also prevent Starmie from using Rapid Spin, so entry hazard setters like Skarmory and Roserade are perfect partners.
