DPP Player in a BW World

Hey everyone,

I used to play back in DPP meta and was active on the forums and in the CAP but forgot my old account name. Every now and then I get a big craving for some Pokemon and start playing again. I usually like to make my teams by seeing what's popular and picking some good counters to that. Typically I run bulky-offence as a result and this team is no exception. Let's have a look!

Updated Team:

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SpD/252 Spe
Nature: Modest (+SAtk -Atk)

Move Set:
Fire Blast
Earth Power
HP Grass
Stealth Rock

Purpose: Bri's Heatran build has so far been a solid option. Heatran works as a good lead, able to handle many threats and get out Rocks with ease. The coverage and power are welcome on my team as Heatran can dent most things. HP Ice is missing but I feel with Mamoswine and Starmie packing Ice options, HP Grass is great for at least denting Water types. My one issue so far is that Heatran is not designed to make it passed the mid game since I need to switch him in so much to sponge attacks and if any threat is around late game, I am down my main Steel type. That being said, Heatran does his job very well.

Scizor @ Leftovers
Trait: Technician
EVs: 248 HP/96 Atk/164 SpD
Nature: Adamant (+Atk -SAtk)

Move Set:
Swords Dance
U-Turn
Bullet Punch
Roost

Purpose: Scizor has a few roles on my team: revenge killer, scout, late game cleaner. What I like about Bri's Scizor is the flexibility it brings. It covers many threats with Bullet Punch but doesn't have to commit to a sweep thanks to U-Turn. The bulk and Roost let Scizor switch in to a few attacks and entry hazards and not care. The downside is that outside of BP, I am forced to switch with U-Turn. That being said, Scizor has won me a few games and I like the niche he fills.

639.gif

Terrakion @ Choice Band
Trait: Justified
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/ 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe -SAtk)

Move Set:
Close Combat
Stone Edge
X-Scissor
Quick Attack

Purpose: Terrakion is my main physical damage dealer. He's a great mid-game wall breaker and late game sweeper thanks to his speed. Not much can counter him directly while he can simply overwhelm many top threats like Ferrothorn, Dragonite, Rotom-W, and Heatran. The main counters to him, ie: users of Mach Punch and Bullet Punch, are handled well by the rest of my team, letting Terrakion sweep more often than not.

381.gif

Latios
@ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/ 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe -Atk)

Move Set:
Draco Meteor
Surf
HP Fire
Roost

Purpose:
Latios is my special-side wall breaker. His typing works well with my team, especially Heatran, and his damage + coverage takes out many strong threats such as Ferrothorn, Breloom, Dragonite, Salamence, Poilitoad, Rotom-W, etc. Together with Mamoswine, Latios forms my offensive core though Latios can often survive to late game with Roost to clean up with his great speed.

473.gif

Mamoswine
@ Life Orb
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/ 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe -SAtk)

Move Set:
Earthquake
Ice Shard
Icicle Spear
Stone Edge

Purpose:
Mamoswine is my physical wall-breaker designed to take over the mid game. I use Icicle Spear simply for Substitute abusers while Ice Shard is essential for any late game cleaning I might need, though I don't expect him to survive that long. Mamoswine's main appeal for this role is his typing and STAB moves. Having that electric immunity and BoltBeam resist is fantastic and ground + ice coverage are essential offensively.

121.gif

Starmie
@ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SpD/252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe -Atk)

Move Set:
Surf
Thunderbolt
Ice Beam
Rapid Spin

Purpose:
Since my team relies more on defensive typing synergy to survive, I need to be able to switch a lot which is why Starmie is so useful. It's secondary function as a strong special attacker, with essential coverage moves, and as a speedy cleaner work well with my team to round it out.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Trait: Flame Body
EVs: 252 HP/4 SAtk/ 252 SpD
Nature: Calm (+SpD -Atk)

Move Set:
Lava Plume
Stealth Rock
Roar
Toxic

Purpose: I love Heatran a lot as he's very flexible. I typically use him as a lead since he's pretty safe and can reliably get Stealth Rocks in. Mid game, he functions as a good pivot with Latios and I find having Roar essential to keeping some stat-boosters from taking control due to his bulk and typing. Toxic is generally useful for tougher walls or stall fights. Heatran is my main counter for Scizor, Ferrothorn, and a good check for a lot of big threats.

593.gif

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP/216 Def/ 44 Spe
Nature: Bold (+Def -Atk)

Move Set:
Taunt
Will-O-Wisp
Scald
Recover

Purpose: Jellicent functions as my main physical check for things like Scizor, and general Fighting types as well a good stopper for things like Heatran and Politoad. Taunt keeps walls in check and Burn sources can cripple some switch-ins and support my team. Together with Heatran he forms my defensive core but also works in tandem with Latios, Mamoswine and Terrakion, letting them focus on a lot of the damage.

My main strategy is to use fast, natural powerful attackers with good offensive and defensive coverage to wear down opponents and not allow them much safe counter play. The choices in Pokemon are ones which allow me multiple options to counter the most common OU threats. The momentum I get is from being able to switch in good counters that can hit their response switch-ins hard making it easier to eventually win out in the end. I have many options to sweep late-game but still a reliable offensive and defensive core to carry the mid-game.

A couple of issues I'm having are against heavy stall teams since I lack PHazing and Taunt as well as some teams that run faster, hyper-offense, especially hard hitting CSers with coverage (Terrakion is the prime candidate here). I'm thinking of Bulky DD Gyarados or Taunt Gliscor to help a bit with that, as well as add another Ground immunity but I don't know who to replace.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any feedback you have :D

Hey. Cool team.

Problems
:

  • 579.png
    Psychic-types in general.

Psychic Types are very troublesome to your team. Your main "check", Heatran, is nailed by a timely Focus Blast or Surf from Specs Latios. Because of this, Gengar seems troublesome as well. Shadow Ball and Focus Blast hit your whole team supereffectively and you only have Starmie to revenge kill it. Mamoswine can 2HKO your whole team with Earthquake and its Ice STAB if it gets a free switch-in. Mamoswine is problematic for most teams, but in this case you only have one Pokemon that can reliably revenge kill it. In this case, Starmie. Lastly, Terrakion is an issue. In your case you have two ways to revenge kill it; however, both are OHKO'd by a Banded Stone Edge so this isn't reliable, and a another check would be appreciated. Dugtrio sun is problematic as well since your only sun check is Heatran, and when it is trapped by opposing Dugtrio you lose to opposing Venusaur and Volcarona.

Solutions:

Gemini%27s_Scizor.gif

Scizor @ Leftovers | Technician
Adamant | 248 HP / 96 Atk / 164 SpD
Swords Dance | U-turn | Bullet Punch | Roost

485.gif

Heatran @ Air Balloon | Flash Fire
Timid | 252 SpA | 4 SpD | 252 Spe | 0 Atk | 30 Def
Stealth Rock | Fire Blast | Hidden Power Ice | Earth Power

Scizor solves most of your teams problems. With a Specially Defensive Set with Roost, Scizor is a fantastic counter to Gengar, Reuniclus, CM Lati@s, etc. and can maintain momentum with U-turn. It is also a great check to Terrakion and Mamoswine with its strong Bullet Punch boosted by its ability Technician. Swords Dance and U-turn may seem like they are redundant, but in reality you'll be spamming U-turn early game while end-game you will spam Bullet Punch after a Swords Dance. I've found it to be very effective. While looking through your team to see what to replace, Jellicent seems like it serves the most redundant role. You already have two Keldeo checks in Latios and Starmie while Heatran stops opposing Scizor rather easily. You have two water-resists and a 3rd isn't necessary, so I don't think you need one. This Scizor can set-up on Banded Scizor locked into Superpower, so that is not a problem. With this change, opposing Scizor and Heatran become more problematic due to the fact you have no Jellicent. Additionally, Heatran does not need a Specially Defensive spread due to Scizor having one to check opposing Psychic-types and Lati@s. Because of this, I recommend an Air Balloon offensive Heatran. With Earth Power it can beat and switch into opposing Heatran while the speed investment insures you always outspeed opposing non-Scarf Scizor. Lastly, this gives you a secondary Dragon-check if Mamoswine dies. Also, if you can maintain your Air Balloon versus Sun teams with Dugtrio, then they won't have such an easy time against your team.

Good luck.

Hey, thanks for the great feedback. I do agree that Jellicent seems to be doing the least for my team right now so I am pretty open to trying out your ideas. I'll let you know how they work out. Thanks again!

So far so good. I think Scizor is much more effective than Jellicent. One consideration I am having is HP Grass over Ice on Heatran as it adds some good coverage missing on my team. Pokemon it hits pretty hard include Politoed and Jellicent both of whom Heatran outspeeds and can revenge kill if necessary.

With Bri's changes, this team looks fairly solid to me. The only things I would consider are running psyshock > hp fire on your Latios, since the pokemon psyshock hits like Keldeo and Terrakion in sand are more important for Latios to hit, especially when you already have a Heatran to deal with the pokemon hp fire would hit much better than Latios. Besides that, the only other thing that I would point out is the lack of a scarfer on your team, which is unusual for offensive teams nowadays and I find that they are somewhat of a necessity on offensive teams. I don't have the time to test the team yet, but when I do I'll edit my post if I feel like the team needs a scarfer.

Psyshock is an interesting choice. I find having the HP Fire really helpful for hitting many popular steels looking to sponge a DM, specifically Scizor and Ferrothorn but also Forretress. While I do have Heatran, the insurance to catch some switch in off guard is really useful. I'll try Psyshock though.

As for the scarfer, I have been considering Scarf Terrakion and then putting a Band onto Scizor or Mamoswine but I find the priority I have (three instances of it) and the natural speed (+ speed on Latios, Starmie, Terrakion) really helps.
